Frame by Frame Animation inside of After Effects!

  • In this After Effects Tutorial, I'll show you how to animate frame by frame inside of After Effects.
    Usually you would do stuff like that in Rough Animator, Photoshop or Procreate.
    But there’s a simple trick, that makes it much easier
    First of all, we add an adjustment layer and "Posterize Time" because frame by frame animation is usually done with 12 fps.
    Next we add a new shape with a simple ellipse. We set a path keyframe and move the shape...
    The problem in After Effects is, you can’t really see your last step. You’re basically blind.
    You could go back and forth, but that’s really annoying.
    The solution: CC Wide time!
    CC Wide time looks one step back and blends it into the current frame. Awesome right?
    That makes frame by frame animation in After Effects easy.
    We animate the drop. And really helpful is... We see the last step.
    After animating the main shape, we need to add some more detail shapes, like splashes.
    Finally we glam the drop up and add two layer styles. Bevel and emboss and inner shadow.
    So I guess, CC Wide time isn’t a perfect solution - as After Effects isn’t specially made for frame by frame animation, but it should be alright for some easy and simple shapes.
    I use it quite a lot.

    I've always been intimidated by frame by frame and cel animation. Using CC Wide Time for onion skinning is a great tip! Thanks. When pasting the layer styles, I could be tempted to copy with property links in case you want to change them later. Great tutorial and I'm glad to see your channel is growing quite quickly! Seems like only a month ago you had just hit 1k subs.

      That’s actually a great tip to copy with property links! Thx very much!
      Cell / frame by frame animation takes a lot of practice, patience and time... I really like the look of it, that’s why I started doing small scenes in After Effects recently.
      Yeah! It’s really exciting to see the channel growing... It started as a personal challenge to put myself out there, upload some videos and see what’s going to happen... I’ll keep making them, it’s a lot of fun:)

    This is very good to know. For me, it's hard to beat the personality of frame-by-frame because computer generated tweens and effects lack soul. It's like a drum machine vs. a drummer.

    • @ManueldoesMotion
      @ManueldoesMotion  3 года назад +1

      That's exactly how I see it. Handmade animation just feels so much better.

    • @Frick8375
      @Frick8375 3 года назад

      I’m gonna have to disagree with this. I think frame by frame animation is really nice and all but if done correctly, tweening can look just as fluid and soulful. It’s just my opinion but honestly I appreciate both forms of animation equally !

    thank you so much for this. my problem is when i want to select my path points i accidently select background layers... in order to not select background layers i have lock every other layers... but i see that u dont even lock them out but still can select points so easily. how is that?

    • @ManueldoesMotion
      @ManueldoesMotion  3 года назад

      Hi! You’re very welcome! It happens to me as well;-)
      Important is that you select the mask before clicking on the points. And as soon as you click somewhere else, the mask is deselected and you have to select it again before you’re able to select the points again.
      It’s actually a good way to lock some layers if you don’t need them. Makes things easier to handle.

    Hello! I have a problem following your tutorial, when I move the drop it doesn´t add a new key frame automatically and the when I go backwards in the timeline, the drop stays in the same position it only changes the shape form, I don´t know why!

    • @ManueldoesMotion
      @ManueldoesMotion  3 года назад +3

      Hi! Maybe you changed the position of the whole layer by accident, instead of moving the path itself. That happens sometimes...

    • @ManueldoesMotion

      Thanks! You mean the "toggle hold keyframe"... You use it if you don't want any change happening until the next keyframe. It basically freezes the value until the next keyframe.

    Thanks for the tutorial! I have an issue with my points: After few frame animating, when I click and drag any of the point by mouse or pen, they jump in the middle of nowhere out of the screen. I can select them and move them by keyboard and nothing weird happens but not with mouse. Do you have any idea what is wrong? I have also disabled an kind of snapping although this shouldn't be any issue as for the first few frames I do not have any problem even with snapping enabled. Thanks

    • @ManueldoesMotion
      @ManueldoesMotion  2 года назад

      Hi! You're very welcome. It might be that you accidentally select the layer itself and move it instead of the points. At least that's what happens to me...;)

  • @bryanschumacker5417
    @bryanschumacker5417 5 месяцев назад

    Something really weird happens with this when you add posterize time. My comp is at 24 fps and when I add posterize time to the adjustment layer, the entire path is like delayed when you look at each keyframe. So when I look at my second keyframe, the shape still looks like how it did on the very first keyframe. I am on AE '23. Why is that?

    • @ManueldoesMotion
      @ManueldoesMotion  5 месяцев назад

      That’s exactly what the effect is supposed to do. When you reduce the frame rate to 12 fps for example, objects move every second frame, no matter where your keyframes are.

    Hi, I was wondering...
    You see I already drew my frames in a separate drawing software. I extracted the frames and wanted to compile them into a video. Can I insert those frames (which is in a png format.) into AE and edit them like shown?
    I tried normal video editing software but they’ve shown to be a pain with frame by frame 😅
    Thank you in advance

    • @ManueldoesMotion
      @ManueldoesMotion  3 года назад +1

      Hi! You can of course import them as a png sequence into After Effects and add effects and layer styles to them.
      Generally you could of course add masks to your png sequence and animate them.
      What you probably can't do is edit the content of the shapes that you created in the other software. because they are "baked" pixels and not converted into editable masks or shapes when you import them.

  • @charlieorsomething
    @charlieorsomething 3 года назад +1

    Why do you make the animation 24fps to then add an effect to make it 12fps? Why not just make the composition 12fps?

    • @ManueldoesMotion
      @ManueldoesMotion  3 года назад +1

      Good question! I usually choose the frame rate in which the comp is rendered out in the end. I think that’s much easier than having a comp with 12 fps which then needs to be rendered out in a different frame rate. But it is possible though.
