@Bard, from what I saw you missed quite a lot with your Maggotkin abilities. Enemy units get disease tokens not only from 6's to hit, but also from being within 3" of a Maggotkin unit at the end of EVERY movement phase and combat phase. So when Mr Beard charged his whole army into your units, you could have been racking up a lot more disease tokens each player turn, and thus greatly increased your damage output. Also you should cast Gift of Disease every turn to put more disease tokens on your enemy because they do stack. Finally you could have deployed another Feculant Gnarlmaw thanks to Horticulus Slimex's ability, which would have given you 3 trees to generate contagion points each turn instead of just 2. I love my Maggotkin army and the recent battletome is by far the most flavorful and fun one I have played in many years, but the drawback is the amount of bookkeeping is a lot to keep track of. Which even that is very fitting, since Grandfather Nurgle loves his talies and record keeping.
Wasn't he also 4+ on wards for the wheel?

I'd be really interested in a video where the whole team get together and share their reflections on the similarities/differences between 40k and AoS. How has the process of learning been? How do you find AoS? Are you enjoying yourselves? What are the relative strengths/weaknesses of each system?
I absolutely love the AOS nurgle minis. Good to see you guys playing. A note for Beard on the Varanguard; in my experience, you either go all in with them or leave them home. Relentless Killers is great, but you really want a big unit to get the most out of them for that one big charge per game. EDIT: I think the camera person should be called the chaos familiar for what it's worth.

This here is a most excellent fantastical start to my day! Just got off work and will not be going back for at least 2 weeks due to a much needed knee surgery finally happening monday; and not only am I greeted by an awesome Sigmar batrep from you lovely fellows, but you are running my army, the Maggotkin of Nurgle! Wow that was quite a long winded sentence!
These two are a freaking joy to watch. Keep up the Sigmar goodness.
Id suggest running Knights of the Empty Throne from the Wrath off the Everchosen supplement if you want to run a Varanguard focussed list ⚔️
Definitely worth using Knights of the Empty Throne, especially with the mark of tzeentch
Im not an expert and might be wrong but:
1. When the chaos warriors/knights take mortal wounds you can try to ignore them because of the runeshield and then do the undivided ward roll of +6. Since the shields don't give a ward save, just says it gives the possibility to ignore them on +5.
2. The doom knights can't be equiped with an ensorcelled weapon, since the other members of the squad have lances. The only option to change the weapon from them is the flail, and then you have to choose ensorcelled or lances. If you want your doomknight with ensorcelled you must give all the unit that equipment and choose not to give a cursed flail to the doom knight.
EDIT 3. When beasts of nurgle retreat you can put disease point to enemy units close to them.

Just so you know Beard the marauders can change one of their charge dice to a 6 and get +1 if they have a drummer. They can also charge in the turn they are brought in via the Ravagers trait. You can use this to make them sneakily charge a unit from behind and tie them up as early as Turn 1 or help out a dwindling unit later on too.
Disease points are also given to enemy units within 3" at the end of the movement phase and the end of the combat phase.
Fantastic Aos content, really hoping everyone gets behind this and it continues. Amazingly painted armies, the Nurgle is another level. Great work to the painter.
Surprising how interesting you guys through sheer presentation can make a battle where the two lines meet and just grind it out. Cudos. Any lesser production would have had me turn off by now but you guys make it compelling.
Vey nice to see you guys doing more Age of Sigmar. I discovered you all with the first battlereport of Stormcast Eternals vs Slaves to Darkness. It looked like you guys were and are having a blast, I love the energy and enthusiasm!
Some input on your question regarding Varanguard and other units, Beard:
Varanguard are at the moment one of the few sources of dmg in Slaves to Darkness (we'll see what the new book brings in december), so they are a very nice pick. Also without Archaon.
Varanguard are great with the mark of Tzeentch so you get to reroll saves of 1 and give them a 2+ save (with some bonusses to save like Mystic Shield, All Out Defense or Oracular Visions). They also get TWO 5+ spell ignores (they do stack, in contrast of ward saves).
I prefer them with Deamonforged Blades for the mortal wounds, it's nice against high armour enemies and has the most dmg output compared to the other options (Nurgle is kinda rough though, with their 5+ ward on everyone). The Spears are not worth it at the moment and Ensorcelled Weapons are good in Sixth Circle in Host of the Everchosen subfaction (because they get +1 dmg on the charge, you want as many attacks as you can get).
When played with Archaon in Host of the Everchosen you can get 2 units of 3 as battleline (bigger units are not really worth it as you won't have enough units to get on objectives. Archaon and 6 Varanguard is 3/4th of a 2k army, you can't afford to have that be only 2 units). Otherwise just get 1 or maybe 2 units of 3 if you have the points. As others pointed out, you can run a unit of Varanguard as your general in the Knight of the Empty Throne subfaction from Wrath of the Everchosen (you can find it in the app under 'expansions'). In this case, a unit of 6 is always preferred (a general with 30 wounds on a 3+ save is insane).
The Chaos Knights look like they should do dmg, but sadly they just don't. Just as you say at the end, after the first impact with the lances on the charge they do almost nothing anymore. The chariots do sort of the same (with the mortal wounds on the charge), but are way cheaper. See what works best for you.
Regarding Chaos Warriors, I rather play them in a unit of 20 instead of two units of 10. As they have a +1 to their save with 10 or more models, they lose that bonus after taking 12 wounds instead of only 2. In that case I'd play them with Chaos Halberds because of the 2" reach. These have a worse weapon profile but because you are likely to roll almost double the dice I feel like that is worth it. Just drown your opponent in save rolls, they will roll enough 1's to eventually die.
I've noted some mistakes I noticed during the game below (As I'm a Slaves to Darkness player myself I know that army better then Maggotkin of Nurgle, so apologies if I make it seem like Beard is the only one making mistakes). This is not to be a rules lawyer but to help you guys out. We all make plenty of mistakes so don't worry about it, but it might help the learning process. If you had fun you did a good job.
9:30, 54:06 Oracaular Visions got faq'ed to be +1 to save, not rerolling saves (this is one of the reasons I prefer to check the app, as the older battletomes have had many faqs and are thus no longer a reliable source for the current correct rules).
20:28 In Age of Sigmar you don't need to declare who you are charging. So in this case just roll the charge for the Chaos Knights and see where you want them to go with the distance you rolled.
27:49, 36:52, 55:01 The Doomknight must have the same weapon as the unit (in this case a Cursed Lance) OR he can have the Cursed Flail (the special leader weapon). He can not have an Enscorcelled Weapon if the rest of the unit is armed with Cursed Lances (or vice versa). He still gets an additional attack though.
34:15 The (in this case Undivided) Aura of Chaos has a range of 12". So if the Varanguard are not WHOLLY within 12" of the general, they would not benefit from the 6+ ward (this might be played correctly, it's just hard to see in these shots). The other hero does also have the 12" Aura of Chaos, but only the first effect (in the case of Undivided it's battleshock immunity).
39:40 The Beast of Nurgle had a hit roll of 6, that's one Disease Point on the Chaos Chariot.
44:12, 58:25 At the end of THE combat phase (and therefore every combat phase), add 1 Disease Point to every enemy unit within 3" of any Maggotkin of Nurgle unit.
44:31, 1:00:05 Rolling for the Disease Points is at the start of the battleshock phase. It might force out some more (difficult) battleshock rolls on the opponent. So remember to do this first! In this case, as a Chaos Knight died they had lost 2 models this turn an thus needed to make a battleshock roll (with a bravery of 7, 1 knight could flee on a roll of 6). Before the Disease Points dmg the battleshock roll would've been redundant as they could not fail the roll.
45:29 Beard I noticed you removed one Chaos Knight in the middle of the unit (the one that just died from Disease). Keep unit coherency of 1" in mind! It looks like the unit is no longer coherent here, therefore forcing you to remove more models until it is coherent again. In this case it would have been better to remove a model from to side so the remaining models would all be within 1" of each other.
48:25 At the end of the movement phase (and therefore every movement phase), add 1 Disease Point to every enemy unit within 3" of any Maggotkin of Nurgle unit.
49:39 Don't forget the Monstrous Rampage at the end of the charge phase.
1:03:52 The reinforcements from the Rally the Tribes command ability can come onto any of the board edges, not necessarily your own (as long as they remain more then 9" away from enemy units). It could be tactical to have them come in from the side to be in the thick of it faster or in the enemy backline to steal an unguarded objective.
1:04:07 The Chaos Lord on Karkadrak does D3 mortal wounds on impact to every enemy unit within 1" after a successful charge, on a 2+. You remembered it later so it's all good. Because he can impact multiple units, it can be good to charge him in such a way that he ends within 1" of two or more units to do potentially d3 mortal wounds to all of them. Also, if he kills an enemy model with his hexed battleaxe, he heals d3 wounds at the end of the combat phase. Therefore it is good to do these attacks when you think it might be enough to kill a model. If not, do some of the other attacks first so soften the target up a bit (from the sword and the Karkadrak).
1:20:14 Heroic Recovery is faq'ed to always be a d3, even when the 2d6 roll matches the bravery characteristic of the hero (instead of 1).

You should check out Conquest: Last Argument of Kings. It is a fantastic game that fills the Warhammer Fantasy hole nicely. And since you like dwarves, they have a really cool Dwarven faction called the Dweghom.
You should check out Warhammer Fantasy Battles 6th edition, for some reason the books didn't get destroyed after they discontinued the game and you can still play it!

At 1:20:00, heroic recovery has been changed so that if you match or are under your bravery charteristic you get to heal d3 damage.
By far the BEST battle report of any channel I have seen thus far! The beautiful studio, amazingly painted armies, and the comical banter make a magnificent combination for entertainment. Not to mention I play both armies 😊. I thank you both!

I'm sure someone has already covered it but straight of the bat in the first hero phase, there shouldn't ever be no heroic actions you can always try heroic leadership and generate an extra CP. There's no reason never to do this if nothing else is more pertinent, a free extra CP for that hero to use.

I may have missed it, but rememeber that you both get Heroic Actions in each Hero Phase. Also, you can attempt to dispel the Endless Spell in the enemy's Hero Phase!

also cavalry arnt for fighting blocks of infantry, theyre for running round the back and doing nasty things to artillery and bowmen.

Knights of the Empty Throne OR Host of the Everchosen with Big Daddy Archaon. Varanguard are my favorite unit in this game behind the Lord on Karkadrak

Bard your save rolls were absolutely nuts and you need to STAHP.
Start taking your chaos warriors with halberts it will give them a lot more staying power as they can fight in 2 ranks. Also if you take big monsters or daemon princes’ go with despoilers. Belekor is a great pic as he messes with your opponent by trapping a unit till your next hero phase and is a 2 cast wizard. If you take verangaurd take them in either empty throne or along side arcaon in host of the ever chosen. It will make them practically immortal if you play it right. If you take a regular daemon prince go with khorne as it can make your opponent fail charge roles. And last but not least is don’t be afraid to Miss mash marks being uniform can be ok but if you want un predictability especially in ravagers go with multiple marks and bounce your leader around.
Got on demand for this shit, great batrep and beautiful armies and board. Your professional format is just the best keep the AoS games coming!

Great batrep. Sad to see the Maggokin lose. An aside, if you have a unit in combat with a Maggotkin unit at the start of the turn, even if that unit gets no 6's to hit, the minimum disease that unit would have at the end of the turn is 3.
Varanguard usually run Ensorcelled Weapons if they are in Host of the Everchosen, as the 6th circle gives them +1 damage on their high number of attacks. Otherwise the Daemonforged Blades is the go to. Usually running a big block of six to stack of all your buffs on is the way to go from there. Mark of Tzeentch + rerolls from the warshrine or the chaos sorc lord on foot just making them extremely reliable and hard to kill.

Love the AOS content, missed watching you guys when I got out of 40k. Few mistakes here and there but you guys are learning and putting out great content while doing so. Keep it up
100% think you should run Knights of the Empty throne at some point which makes the Varanguard a hero unit. With a unit of Varanguard as your general with Command Trait- Inescapable Doom stopping retreats within 3" of them and the artifact Grasping Plate to allow them to fight and pile in 6" in thr combat phase. Very nice mechanic there for them
Also running Maggotkin of Nurgle I'd always deepstrike the nurglings in enemy deployment zone to start getting you contagion pts from their zone to help with summoning and potentially threaten backfield objectives
Why do I feel like listening to Judge Rinder when Bard reads out his army list?
I cannot wait for you guys to get the third edition StD tome as that will really help define the army. As always, got to recommend we get some death factions on the table. There simply are no true death factions in 40k that are unchaos aligned so seeing the zombies ghosts and ghouls roaming the table is always something that's unique to the fantasy side.

For the Chaos Knights, do people think its worth trading the leaders lance for the flail, or having him keep his lance?
I like either "Endless Spell" or "Incarnate" for the camera person (Incarnates are like spirits of a mortal realm given life, iirc) :)
AoS is awesome, but coming from 40k, it will take some time to get a grip on all the tiny differences and avoid assumptions :D

Varanguard if they aren't with the Host or the knights of the empty throne are best used imo as a dangerous anvil rather then attacking. they can be hard to get through and their movement can get them where you need to put a blocking unit in a single turn

I wish 40K was as clean of a game as AOS, in that I wish weapons just had a hit wound and AP stat the way Sigmar works. I think it would be better for gameplay in 40K and it would speed up casual play and make it more fun
