Probably needs to be taken apart cleaned and double check that all the rods and pins are adjusted properly. Also some motors that old and worn will run slower one direction and faster in the other because it's never run in reverse its common in steam trains

I put a white towel or a white cloth under my trains and rolling stock so if I drop a screw or spring it will not bounce off the work area.

Great work, I was thinking of making a video of striping and rebuilding a Rivarossi big boy, no need now lol.
I’ve got a few big boys, I have one that has rubber/plastic tubes that work as a drive shaft from the motor, they are slipping now, do you have any ideas how to replace them with a better alternative ?

Don't forget it's Italian made, so al threads are metric. the bolt in the smokebox of the locomotive holding the bell assy, is a 3 mm socket wrench.
