  • AHM Rivarossi Mikado and Heavy Pacific rebuild. Time to clean and and prepare the motors. I use ZEP Solvent Degreaser for cleaning and Marvel Air Tool Oil for lube on the phosphor bronze bearings. This motor is a good motor and only needs just a little extra care to perform excellent.

For me, the Rivarossi motor is fair, but the main fault of contention lies within it's wheels. High flanges and rubber tires are not favorable at all for me. I waiting to see how you address this though. Good work so far. Oh, as an alternative to a motor cleaner, I often use automotive brake cleaner which also comes in an aerosol spray can w/ tube. It is very effective but I suspect that it may be more toxic than your Zep product, so gloves and proper eye wear should also be used in conjunction with it just to be on the safe side.

I have yet to use brake cleaner on train parts, but I do have and should give it a try to see what it can do

For motor cleaner, can I use CRC 2-26 Multi-Purpose Precision Lubricant? The spec says "Plastic safe lubricant, penetrant and corrosion inhibitor that helps prevent electrical malfunctions caused by water penetration, humidity, condensation or corrosion. Restores resistance values and helps stop current leakage."

I think that works pretty good and if it's available local then it's even better. I don't know of anything that it would wreck. I'd test it on an old Athearn motor first because you could watch the result while testing and if it works on that, should work on everything.

Older RR locos have the square motor? Can we use the same way to clean it? also if the motor is already rusted, do you need anything else to clean it? I assume the spray gets into the commutator and will clean itself.

you can use exactly the same way and the square motor is very good if it is still intact. I've got those ML-4000 that had 2 different kinds of that motor and these tiny bearings wear spilling out. If you can get at the rust with some Evaporust on a qtip you can get rid of it. Otherwise the ZEP stuff does a very good job!

I have a round RR motor that lost a spring to the brush, anyway to fabricate it?

you can buy a set of power tool replacement brushes with springs and then twist the spring tighter until you get your size and just cut it to length. those brush sets are very cheap at most hardware stores.

Wonderful video! Please protect yourself and don't spray on your fingers. What about CRC electronic cleaner? Will that work.

sometimes I use that and it works OK, but usually I clean by hand!
