The fact that one has to try and listen to ping differences to detect a fake is really telling of the fact that the legit Dupont is overpriced and not worth the asking price. Seriously $30 vs $600 and it isn't immediately obvious? Wow.
ST Dupont lighters are usually: silver, gold or palladium. They are made of precious metals. Also, brand means a lot. People don't just buy Rolex because they are really good watches, they buy them because they are Rolexes. You could buy a Swiss made watch for much cheaper just like how you could buy a lighter for much cheaper. Products like this are designed for people who appreciate luxury items and are willing to spend the money for a quality product.

You don't need to get "Fake" lighters to get the same experience either, I couldn't care less what stamping is on the bottom. If you're just looking for lighters with the best fit and finish the "Fakes" are usually one of the better choices, though I have seen some original brands that seem to be a step up without pushing the false branding.
To save money on refills do what I did and buy a brass screw in adapter so that you can use dunhill or Colin to butane. Buy a can and refill for a year super cheap. St dupont butane cartridges are a ripoff. Their flints are fine and are reasonably priced.
They're marketed towards higher salary people who don't necessarily care about spending money. . 200-300k+ a year. I think it would be a great idea for them to create a non precious metal version towards the middle class priced around $100-$200 dollars
Most people that get the replicas are usually trying to show off, that's for sure. Some people like myself opt for the fake one because of the love for the design and feeling. When a factory in china can make the same lighter with nearly the same materials and quality, that shows a lot about how insane the price of the real one is The real lighters are obviously aimed towards a certain kind of people, so I don't think these replicas being in circulation will put a damper on their sales.
I don't agree with the if they can make it the same cheaper it's better argument since the company that is stealing hasn't had to develop the product. Without protection in these matters there will only be incentive to steal others ideas and make it cheaper.. Oh yeah, that happened already...

I think one of the HUGE differences between the real and the fake is going to be how thick the gold layer is on the lighter. A real ST Dupont (and I have several) can be carried in your pocket along side your keys or change. It will get dinged and pick up scratches but it takes YEARS of hard core use to wear through the gold. I would imagine the Chinese knock offs will wear through quickly. I love the PING too though! I've heard people say the same thing about the ping but I have seen a lot of demo videos and the ping is not the same pitch on different line 2 lighters. So I do not think that is a reliable way to tell the difference. The best way would be a materials test but outside of that the rounded edges and the serial number stamp seem to be the most reliable things to look at. I think it is something like cuban cigars. There are many good quality fake bands these days but it has to do with looking at multiple features and having experience. I just purchased my first line 2 today in palladium and plan to continue to use my fake outside of special occasions. I cannot afford to scuff up a $2000cad lighter. I want it to be in mint condition when I eventually pass it down to my kids or grandkids. Cheers!
For what it’s worth, you are comparing two different models. They are both ligne2 diamond head but have slightly different designs to the part where the Dupont logo is so the counterfeit is probably even better than you think
The ping says nothing if your buying second hand. I have 2 Dupont lighters A slim one ( actually womans model ) and the Chine red laqure. However I have had them for many years ...both of them the ping is now very dull. Of course if I got it serviced it would have the original sound back. The serial numbers are a tell, 4FK I believe is common fake. The original serial number should not be in one line and some numbers maybe fainter or hit harder in to the lighter. This because the serial numbers are hand stamped. The serial numbers are also sometimes hard too see on the lighter. As for the fakes it very bold. Wonderful lighter you got there. Love your MontBlanc skywalker pen too. :D
I hate to disagree, much less support fake products, but with the prices S.T. Dupont are charging now the idea of buying one is just ridiculous. In 2019 $400 is your starting price, for a lighter. I know, I know, after I've worked my way up the economic ladder for a decade it won't seem like as much, but good grief. The really weird thing is companies like Bic don't do more to emulate them. I am almost totally satisfied with my collection of Bics 99% of the time, but sometimes I just want something with an adjustable flame and that doesn't heat up so fast. Given that the S.T. Dupont fakes cost the same as any other decent lighter, why not just get the lighter that mimics a highly coveted classic design?
Seriously though, if I could get a brass shell with flint and striker that would just hold disposable Bic cartridges I would use that any day and all day over anything else, even a genuine S.T. Dupont. Bics don't lose fuel, I have dozens of them all over the place, they always just work. Bic has accomplished something that no other lighter ever has and if they could just wrap that up in a premium package the world would never look anywhere else.

I wanted to check out this video because I was curious about the serial number. I noticed a lot of Dupont lighters for sale on eBay with that same serial number. The one you see right there at (7:23) 4FK12JS. I have seen sellers selling 4 lighters with all that same number. I would say if you see that number on the lighter you are buy it is probably a fake. I have tried to find information on that, but have not seen much. I have noticed though that the real ones all have different numbers.....Then he mentions it a second later. He says 4PK. that looks more like an "F" to me. I think it's 4 "F" K as in "F" for fake...right ?

They're definitely nice lighters but the price is an easy pass for me. I smoke cigars regularly and with all the use my lighters get I'd prefer to purchase a Xikar for $60-100 and have piece of mind because it is guaranteed for life and will be repaired or replaced, NO QUESTIONS ASKED. They may not be elegant as Duponts but they definitely have some really cool sleek looking ones.

Both are solid brass. There are videos of the dupont factory starting with brass bars. Genuine ones are cut a little thinner and plated heavier with whatever precious metal is to be used.

Not sure what you are saying, but I think that a beginner may be fooled if someone told them that the fake was a real dupont. A true collector should be able to tell by a few give aways. I would not buy one off of eBay and pretend that its real. There are a few unscroupulous sellers on eBay that have pictures of obvious fakes and they are selling them for $600.

You can use most flints, but you need a special adapter to use normal butane

You can repair them. Tools are sold to open them up and all you do is replace the seals and you're done.
The question is. Stills working? If it does, there's no reason to get a original one.
The real ones only have a 2 year warranty. Fake ones just need to replace the o ring seals and are ready to roll.

Take the scales if you want to buy one. The original weighs exactly 110 grams. Chinese replicas weigh 130-140 grams.

The Gatsby or line 2 has the loudest ping. They are also the most faked model. Don't but one online unless you are absolutely certain it is real.

Not sure what you are saying, but I think that a beginner may be fooled if someone told them that the fake was a real dupont. A true collector should be able to tell by a few give aways. I would not buy one off of eBay and pretend that its real. There are a few unscroupulous sellers on eBay that have pictures of obvious fakes and they are selling them for $600.

Hi there, I just brought a fake on Mercari I didn’t know it was fake until I really looked at it. Has the fake serial number and the fill cap is not painted. I’m trying to get my money back but it’s not looking to good for me. I will know more in the next couple of days. Mercari thinks I’m laying.

I got one, it’s the Sleeping Mermaid and collaboration with Oda- it was a bit over 2K but I am a HUGE One Piece fan- putting it lightly, so it was a fine investment for me, but it was an investment.

For the fake one, the box says stylo plume which means a pen in French. So, that’s wrong right off the bat.
Actually you should strike it using your index finger.. not thumb. And you need to reverse it first.

I don’t know, I immediately realized the real one from the fake. I think when you get a feel (and an eye) for quality, you can tell. This has happened to me with other goods as well.
But yes, if it weren’t side by side it would be far more difficult to tell. Perhaps I’d even think it’s a real DuPont...
