Changing the button layout of the GameCube controller doesn't make it a GameCube controller anymore. That's what makes the controllers so special; at least to me.
Ye plus the triggers changing the triggers also ruins it except the addition of another shoulder button to balance it out even if it does the same as the other z
Exactly. As others have said, adding a left Z button would be nice, plus I’d personally like to see an improvement to the right stick (just make it identical to the left stick), but those two improvements would make it perfect for me without sacrificing what’s great about the controller
@@VastDivide I have one myself unfortunately they changed the triggers to not be analog triggers I got it for smash and sunshine but since no analog triggers sunshine doesent have its proper classic control scheme like it would if you used a original one with a adapter works fine for sunshine
It seems the only things this has in common with a GC controller are the colour scheme and octogonal stick holes. Its less a revised version and more just “inspired by.”
I do like how the x and y buttons are closer together so you can short hop with just one thumb in between both buttons, rather than using the whole side of your thumb.
Honestly I wish Smash Ultimate just had a dedicated short hop button, so you could do something like regular jump on Y, short hop on X. It's not like they're hard to do, they could at least make it more comfortable.
Such a shame, would love a slight update with the best of both worlds for Smash, even just to think about eventually phasing out the Gamecube. Thanks for the insights!
That new one looks pretty nice. As someone that grew up with the GC controller but decided to adopt the new Pro Controller, I’ve really come to love it. It’s so sleek and perfect, the only downside was getting rid of old muscle memory I built up from years of Smash, but after that it’s been smooth sailings for me.
So I came back to re-watch this... and for those of you who don't know, Retro Fighters is basically doing a full-on better version of this with the BattlerGC, as well as a version meant for 2D games in the BladeGC. Much better button layout imo, basically using the original GameCube button layout with some additions for modern console / PC compatibility. Only problem is that it won't be releasing until late summer 2022 according to their website. I am super hyped though because I pre-ordered it after not being able to find an adapter for my GameCube controllers to use on Switch or PC for months, and it looks like a really good controller and doesn't have the macro button this one does.
I bought this controller a couple months ago and have a pretty different take on it that maybe qualifies as “niche”. I was on a pro controller and liked the button layout more than the gc one since I play Link and do a lot of bomb stuff (played on gc before that but always found it clunky tbh). So obviously I use it for smash and got it bc of the SH macro, which I think is great for consistency. Something underrated though, is the button travel distance, which let’s you do some interesting flick movements, think rang>fh fair or dthrow>fh nair>nair trap. Bc of how shallow the buttons are, it feels pretty nice to just swipe for some of those inputs. It takes getting used to but I think it’s worthwhile depending on use case! Also the octagonal gates on a pro-style shape is a must, I also swapped out the face plate on my regular procontroller for that reason.
Had to pause the video to comment after that ad, but these really are getting better and better every time I love that they let you just do whatever you want with them
In my opinion, Retro Fighters should have made an Xbox 360-style PS2 controller, even if they have to re-purpose the Duelist. The Defender and BladeGC are good options for playing 2D games, side scrollers, Tony Hawk games and Katamari (Switch only) on Switch and GameCube respectively, but an Xbox 360-style PS2 controller is badly needed, especially when they have some shooters like GITS: Stand Alone Complex, Quake III Revolution, Killzone and Unreal Tournament.

Yeah, but it's only GameCube. It's a neat thing, and if its quality matches what I saw in tearing down the Duelist, then it's great quality. For wireless GameCube play, WaveBird is where it's at. Hopefully they do the Battler and Blade as Bluetooth controllers.

This would've been better if the buttons were rotated clockwise so that A was in the middle, like on the OG GC controller. It has some good ideas like gated joysticks and resized A B buttons but the unaltered procon layout makes it a hard pass.
What a GameCube controller redesign needs: addition of a ZL button (or would that just be an L button?), a select/minus button to go with the start/plus button it already has, clickable thumb and c-sticks, a better d-pad for 2D games, and for the Switch specifically, a home and snapshot button. What a GameCube redesign does not need: changing the thumbstick/c-stick positions, and ESPECIALLY, the face button positions and sizes. Those face buttons are what makes a GC controller so good for Smash in the first place.
I’d say the face buttons would depend on if the redesign was tailored to just Smash, or for using it for any game. If it’s just for Smash, sure, keep the original buttons, but I’ve personally dabbled with trying various other Gamecube games with controllers that have the ‘diamond’ layout, and... it’s more consistent than you would think.
Focusing on just the title for a moment, I would redesign it specifically in a small handful of ways: (1) That d-pad sucks; it's too stiff and small. Make it similar to the d-pad on the Retro Fighters Blade GCN or the PowerA GCN controller made for the Switch. (2) Both analogue sticks made the same size (especially if Prime 1 and 2 were updated with the option for twin stick controls; same with Prime 3 if that was possible). Also made clickable. (3) Singular start/select button replaced with home button, snapshot button, plus button, and minus button (no turbo button due to that seen as cheating in fighting game tournaments). (4) Singular Z-button upgraded to two Z-buttons. Both the Z-buttons and shoulder buttons made wider and less curved like on the PDP wire GCN controller for Switch. (5) The two vaguely shaped peanut like things on the controller would be fused fully into the main body. (6) Options for wired version with 10-foot cable (until the Smash Bros revision controller for WiiU, the cable was generally only 8ft), Bluetooth, and 2.4ghz.
I actually like this controller. It's nice though to hear some contrast to my initial thoughts. I've been able to compare this to a stock pro controller, a Power A wireless gamecube controllers, and I even modded another pro controller much like you did (adding buttons of varying height to emulate the gamecube layout). Of all these controllers, the Duelist hits the mark. Yes, I'm that niche audience (budding Palutena main without enough enough practice). And it is very satisfying being able to pull off short hops on command. I first learned about it over on Kevin Kenson's channel 2 weeks ago and back then the Duelist was nothing more than a "cancelled" kickstarter project that somehow got in the hands of some online retailers. It's good to see Retro Fighters actually selling the Duelist on their store. But still, I do kinda wish RetroFighters filled us in on the progress of the Duelist instead of going dark For 15 months...
Call me weird, but I prefer playing Smash Brothers and other fighting games on my Switch with the Retro-Bit Genesis Controller (Wired) minus Street Fighter and FighterZ which I got an Arcade Stick for.
i think the best "redesign" of the gamecube controller is the "WiiVision" made by Shark Mods, it basically puts the X button on the left because of space reasons. I would buy one of this kind if existed.
Honestly, I wish Nintendo would re-release the Wavebird, give it a new life. I've always wanted one and maybe someday I will, but they're certainly not cheap.
4:39 As the Duelist is a Switch-only controller as far as I am concerned, Retro Fighters made another redesigned GameCube controller in time for the system's 20th anniversary. It's the BladeGC, and it's a GameCube-style controller with symmetrical control sticks and a +Control Pad being given the primary position. The BladeGC is said to work with the GameCube and the Nintendo Switch, so i definitely recommend it for Game Boy Player, side scrollers, Tony Hawk games and Katamari Damacy Re-Roll.
all they had to do was literally keep the face button layout akin to the GameCube with a larger a button and the others orbiting it, and just use that new Pro-controller esque shell that's more ergonomic, with notches for the sticks and it's the best of both worlds. baffles me how they got most of the design so right, and then just went AWOL on the face buttons
"Okay, now that we have perfected every aspect of this controller, let's completely change the face button layout. I'm sure GameCube fans will love that!"
Does Nintendo have a patent on the GC button layout, like they had a patent on the D-pad for how long? Because that's the only reason I can think of why some company would not use the exact same button layout that everyone has been used to for all their GC games for the last 20 years.
Don’t think so. There are other 3rd party ‘Gamecube style’ controllers that still use the exact buttons of an official GC controller. Including Retro Fighters’ own upcoming BladeGC controller. My guess behind the layout on this design is still emphasising ‘A’ as the most important button but elevating the importance of the other buttons too. In Super Mario Strikers for example, you could fake/cancel a shot, but you had to press Y whilst holding B. It was a really awkward stretch on the traditional GC face button layout, but seems like it would be much more intuitive with the Duelist layout.
I love my wireless PowerA white Princess Zelda Switch controller. It doesn’t have rumble or amiibo functionality, but it has TWO programmable buttons, and a slick metallic blue d-pad that is the right amount of firm and clicky.
He included Northern Ireland as part of the little UK map and that’s made me so happy! Often times people just sort of forget about it. I’m 10 times more likely to get Magic Spoon (now that they deliver to the UK!) than that controller, but I like that he gave it a fair review as he always does with these things.
I remember being amazed by how comfortable this controller is back when I got my GameCube. It was a massive step up from the N64 controller and even compared to the PS1 controller, it felt really modern and ergonomic (which is ironic, considering that today's controllers are all influenced by the DS1). However, after being mainly a Mouse + Keyboard player for over a decade I didn't really experience the how much more comfortable controllers have become. I bought a PS5 controller a year ago (mainly for VR, but also for other games) and after comparing it to the GameCube controller, I was surprised how unergonomic it was compared to modern controllers. The weird thing about the GC controller is that if feels good if you hold it as intended, but only then. The GC controller makes it hard to hold it any other way because every other way feels wrong. It kinda locks your hands into a certain position.
They're actually working on an improved Gamecube Controller called the BladeGC, where the thumb sticks are the same size and the button placements are in the right spots.
here's a fun fact: in the metroid prime games, you fire a super missile by holding a and pressing y. this is a button combination that is virtually impossible to do comfortably on every controller *except* for ones with the original gamecube layout. this controller in particular looks like that move is basically impossible.
The only thing I would change with the classic GameCube controller design is being able to make the triggers be super shallow like the pro controller since some newer platform fighters don’t use analog presses. Other than that, the original design is still my favorite controller to this day!
Hall effect triggers allow for GameCube's variable inputs as well as changing the travel distance. Eventually someday maybe we'll get them in GameCube replicas.
IMO, I think the GameCube controller’s face buttons make the most sense for all platforms. The A button being the most used is also the biggest, which makes sense to me. The other buttons could probably be reshaped or placed elsewhere for easier convenience. I do wish the handles were a bit bigger. But it would be nice to see a pro controller and gc controller make a baby for a better controller.
REALLY HOPING the BladeGC controller they have cooking nails it. Honestly a challenge to find a successor to the WaveBird as far as wireless goes. All they really need to do is make the wavebird easily rechargeable but they've certainly gone all in on the design straying pretty far from the original. We shall see! Wireless controllers have been just so much better overall for my setup making it so I don't have to kneel to the cord and my placement of consoles.
A set of rechargeable AA's like Eneloops of Fujitsu's. Rechargeable, better for the environment than lithium ions and rechargeable everything, not just a Wavebird!
If they left the button layout as it was for GameCube... Because that's kinda half the reason to use a game cube controller, loose the silly macro button and had a quality boost this could have been a super solid and interesting choice for controller. It's a shame because there's a real need for GC alternatives that are good but their just isn't much available.
The original Gamecube controller is still my favorite and the most comfortable while still making me feel like I have a firm grip on it and it won't slip out of my hands. I also really like the analog triggers and wish newer systems kept that (like Wii U and Switch controllers). That redesign is pointless, I'd rather just use my Pro controller with HD rumble and motion controls at that point.
I think the PDP Fight Pad Pro is probably the best retail evolution/iteration of GameCube controllers. I've been using that thing constantly for Smash.
Yep! This comment section is prove that we need a proper GameCube controller replica with better handles. Duelist is so close! Fools for changing the face buttons.
Personally I think PowerA were on the right lines with their GameCube style switch controller. Give us that left bumper, clickable sticks and a substantial d-pad. But also give us a c stick which isn't a nipple, maybe some motion controls, Xbox style triggers with the click at the end maintained and made to not feel like rubbish. The GameCube controller's ergonomics are fine, it just needs more functionality
There is value in redoing, not (massively) redesigning, the GameCube controller. If only just for improved quality control and perhaps the possibility to remap buttons. In terms of layout, yes, keep it as it is, but maybe add another Z-trigger on the left for those who perhaps prefer it. Maybe improve the feel of some of the buttons (the Z trigger is kinda squishy). Maybe just add DI/wavedash/firefox notches for Smash enthusiasts, since those are always gonna be the biggest market for it. I suppose that's the big thing here. Smash, be it Ultimate, Melee or even Project M (still being played in secret in hotel rooms of major events in the form of Project+) is the main reason GameCube controllers (be it home-modded, or commercial ones like the GoomWave) are still relevant. And releasing a controller in THAT market, in 2021, you have to be mindful of what you're releasing. A market that has a thriving scene of modded controllers, box style digital controllers and even standardized software mods (UFC), will demand things from a new GameCube controller that you won't necessarily see in other controller markets.
GameCube's quality is spot on. As is Retro Fighters', based on what I saw in my Duelist teardown video. Bigger handles is the main thing that I want. There are so many GameCube replicas with Bluetooth, but only two that I've seen with better handles, and neither of them are really that good.
my gripe with this controller is that the x and y buttons are not laid out like the gamecube controller, which is one of the main things I want kept from the gamecube controller layout. I use y for grab, so not having it at just the right spot feels off.
In my opinion, I think the Duelist is fine if you're switching between Smash and CTR Nitro Fueled back-to-back. You not only have the GameCube aesthetics for Smash, but also retains the ABXY face button layout from the original SNES/Wii/Wii U/Switch pads for playing games that relied on it like Tony Hawk 1+2 or CTR Nitro Fueled. Also, when the Duelist was announced, I was thinking to myself "Can't Retro Fighters redesign the PlayStation 2 analog controller somehow?" I was wanting an Xbox 360-style PS2 controller for the longest time since there are no controllers in the market that do that. The Defender was announced, but I was bummed out that the stick and directional button layout didn't match that of the Nintendo Switch or Xbox 360 controllers. I hope one day Retro Fighters makes the Duelist PS2 compatible once the Defender receiver for PS one and PS2 comes out. After I made my Kickstarter pledges for the upcoming Defender controller, I found out that the Defender will be PS3 and Nintendo Switch compatible. As a result there's also another solution for playing Katamari Damacy comfortably other than 8BitDo's N30 Pro and SN30 Pro (Plus, too) offerings.
Controller looks ok i think i will just stick to my Original Gamecube Controller with a 8Bitdo G Bros. Wireless Adapter for Nintendo Switch (Highly Recommend)
To think, all they needed to do was keep the button layout. If it had the big a in the center and all that, then it would be much better. Nintendo may have a patent on that design though.
Right!? Nintendo does not have a patent on it, which is super weird given that it's Nintendo. Many many many controllers use the GameCube layout. I have a few. I should probably upload videos of the rest of them. Doyoky's GameCube JoyCons are like... really damn good.
The reason for the buttons being layed out with different sizes and shapes is because you should know which buttons to push by touch. It made for a natural game play for first timers. That's why when EA did the lord of the rings film adaptations for consoles, they handed the GameCube version to the actors, and even the older non gamers went at it and where able to get into the game due to the controller setup being so natural to use.
For me, what the GameCube controller needs is just for Nintendo to release a new one in the pro controller shape with the additional buttons for the Switch and keep the front layout the same.
Only OG’s remember when Bob said he didn’t need a GameCube controller for smash and his pro con was fine. How times have changed

all they had to do was literally keep the face button layout akin to the GameCube with a larger a button and the others orbiting it, and just use that new Pro-controller esque shell that's more ergonomic, with notches for the sticks and it's the best of both worlds. baffles me how they got most of the design so right, and then just went AWOL on the face buttons
"Okay, now that we have perfected every aspect of this controller, let's completely change the face button layout. I'm sure GameCube fans will love that!"
omg the editing in this video is flawless, that commercial for the cerial was mwah (chef's kiss)
I want a gamecube controller design that's exactly like the one we know and love but with L1, L3, and R3 buttons.
Also a better d-pad.
They do not have a patent on the face buttons.
I had high hopes for this one, but why put the A button all the way over on the right??
I bought this controller and after getting adjusted to it, it’s my favorite controller now
I thought that was weird too, but then again that's how it is on the SNES / DS / WiiU / Switch.
Bob gets a new studio and immediately starts throwing cereal everywhere 🤣🤣
This controller is a discrace for adding a help button
Wow! Bob has a Magic Spoon ad just a little bit after I ran out of my last order of Magic Spoon! What perfect timing!
here's a fun fact: in the metroid prime games, you fire a super missile by holding a and pressing y. this is a button combination that is virtually impossible to do comfortably on every controller *except* for ones with the original gamecube layout. this controller in particular looks like that move is basically impossible.
Ah, yes. They modernized the fantastic Gamecube front button layout by making it look like a fucking Sega Genesis controller. Great job, guys.
Their development team missed the mark.
That was one of the best ads I've ever seen
Also the controller was pretty cool too I guess
I can see this being good for more casual RPGs, where you're mostly selecting from a menu, you might like that big A button
Hahahahaha that commercial was so funnyy
My sister was sitting by me and was like "This looks really good I like want it"😂
IMO, I think the GameCube controller’s face buttons make the most sense for all platforms. The A button being the most used is also the biggest, which makes sense to me. The other buttons could probably be reshaped or placed elsewhere for easier convenience. I do wish the handles were a bit bigger. But it would be nice to see a pro controller and gc controller make a baby for a better controller.
Now you're just making too much sense.
I would love to be in the room when Bob explains to his roommate why there are Froot Loops all over every surface in every room.
Vampires
im still finding them
The GameCube controller obviously doesn't really need a redesign, but I'd like to see a modernized version with a left bumper and a select button.
Just make the button layout the same. That layout is legendary for any game. You can roll to any other button from A. They're all accessible.
Yep. Pretty simple.
I honestly didn’t notice the GameCube controller only had one shoulder button until I owned an Xbox 360 and wanted to play some of my GameCube stuff
The problem is I don't think it can be used in competitive tournaments bc it has turbo functionality
I gotta give props to the quality of that cereal ad lol made me chuckle
Best ads in the RUclips game, PERIOD. Come for the ads, stay for the content.
So glad I still have my silver GameCube controller from way back then
And the GameCube
Although play some games on Wii for the 16:9 aspect
I'm with ya.
If they left the button layout as it was for GameCube... Because that's kinda half the reason to use a game cube controller, loose the silly macro button and had a quality boost this could have been a super solid and interesting choice for controller. It's a shame because there's a real need for GC alternatives that are good but their just isn't much available.
Yep!
The O.G wavebird is still my go to controller. I dont think there will ever be a controller that will replace it
The closest to it is the Blade GCN, though they still need to provide a second variant that swaps the d-pad and left analogue stick.
Exlene
The original Gamecube controller is still my favorite and the most comfortable while still making me feel like I have a firm grip on it and it won't slip out of my hands. I also really like the analog triggers and wish newer systems kept that (like Wii U and Switch controllers). That redesign is pointless, I'd rather just use my Pro controller with HD rumble and motion controls at that point.
I think the PDP Fight Pad Pro is probably the best retail evolution/iteration of GameCube controllers. I've been using that thing constantly for Smash.
I wouldn't mind a GameCube controller scaled up a little bit. It fit in my hands better when I was younger.
Yep! This comment section is prove that we need a proper GameCube controller replica with better handles. Duelist is so close! Fools for changing the face buttons.
Retrofighters has a new one called BladeGC. It looks similar to an SN30pro+/PlayStation controller with GameCube face buttons.
PowerA's gets knocked too much. It's a good enough controller.
Bob, you can also short hop by pressing both of the jump buttons at the same time.
Yo, that ad slapped so hard 🤣 10/10 would recommend
8:04 as an incineroar main, it has given me issues with my B-reversed up specials but its more of a thing ive had to get used to than a deal breaker.
my gripe with this controller is that the x and y buttons are not laid out like the gamecube controller, which is one of the main things I want kept from the gamecube controller layout. I use y for grab, so not having it at just the right spot feels off.
Start of the video was like a trailer for a movie, John Wick: Cereal Killer
That weird V row of buttons looks ridiculous.
the change in height of the Y Button alone makes it a no go for me because the way the I short-hop relies on that
I am in agreement.
3:38 eye eye captain slapped that like button until it breaks
Off topic, but can we just appreciate the editing for that AD 😂
Bob bout to be kidnapped by Fruit Loops to become their next factory.
That ad was more interesting than yet another controller review, ngl. You got my like.
The best way to upgrade the GameCube controller is to add the one missing button, all we need is that bumper
Legend has it that Wulff is still forcing burn in on the switch oled haha
As Picasso once said (paraphrasing) "you should rather steal than take inspiration"
I stopped doing my chores just to watch the commercial. Bob, your filmmaking has come so far
If they shuffled the three X Yand S buttons it would be so much better! Just put he S button where the Y button is and shift X and Y up.
Retro fighters actually have a new and seemingly better GameCube controller redesign coming out soon, the pre-orders are already sold out though
Why, I'm using the wave bird for as long as it exists.
Have you ever been offered to make an ad for tv? Because your ad game is damn strong
as a connoisseur of gcc's i can say that it does need some tweaking but not to that extent
You can tap Y and X at the same time for a small jump in Smash Bros Ultimate as well
The reason for the buttons being layed out with different sizes and shapes is because you should know which buttons to push by touch. It made for a natural game play for first timers. That's why when EA did the lord of the rings film adaptations for consoles, they handed the GameCube version to the actors, and even the older non gamers went at it and where able to get into the game due to the controller setup being so natural to use.
You can shorthop also by pressing two different jump buttons at the same time.
For me, what the GameCube controller needs is just for Nintendo to release a new one in the pro controller shape with the additional buttons for the Switch and keep the front layout the same.
Also have a better d-pad (it's literally the worst d-pad Nintendo ever made) and upgrade the singular Z-button into two Z-buttons.
I would pay a hundred dollars for a modern GameCube controller from Nintendo.
