very well done, and thank you. ive been climbing big trees here in northern california for 31 years, age 72.... and i am still climbing/working them...... i watch all you different teachers every day,,, just starting to add SRT to my thing....lol.....better late than never....... one of the comments here mentioned them getting the ring in their throw ball stuck sometimes.... i have too..... but not anymore..... i tape the ring shut with electric tape or a 2 inch piece of bicycle inner tube slipped over the ring with just enough room to tie my slipped anchor hitch...... ive subscribed to your channel because you are a easy going good teacher....... thanks again.....roy mendo

Excellent 👍 I'm 43 been climbing for a long time finally got an srt set up, man what a difference. Haven't used it much up in the canopy but it's great for ascending.
The biggest benefit is ascending. Many people switch to drt once in the tree :)

I have a treemotion S Light saddle and love it. I climb for fun and have dropped several thousand on gear and ropes over the years. I couldn't agree with you more. I mostly climb daily as an arborist in a work setting (wish I had more time to do recreational), but it's my medicine too!
This is an awesome video my man. Very nicely presented. I've been climbing SRT for a while now, but I always learn something new. The little things that make so much difference. Like the stopper not while prepping the Rope Wrench to keep the Hitch Hiker pulley from sliding down. That one is golden (like, why didn't I think of that).

I use canopy anchor most of the time. I use an Alpine Butterfly and a quickie to cinch my tie in, and when I'm ready to come down, I just send a tail long enough to touch the ground and I can pull my anchor out of the tree and retrieve my rope. Good tips in here though!

I’ve done tree work in the past, just ladder, climbing and chainsaw. Not one piece of rope! 😱
Now in my late 40’s I have a want to climb up trees again, but doing it THE RIGHT WAY! I’m having trouble understanding all those damm knots 🤦🏻♂️
BTW I like to do tree work for just fun, the adrenaline rush I used to get back in the days was comparable to flying on my motorcycle.

I'll give you a few knots to master that will get you through 90 percent of being an arborist.
Bowline
Running bowline
Slip knot
Clove hitch
Prussic knot/ blakes hitch
VT knot
You can get by with ease. Also some are useful in general life

Thanks cron. I try and be as clear as I can. Videos can teach you the basics but getting out there and climbing a tree in a non work environment is essential for progression.
Try and go with someone more experienced if possible.
If you go on your own or with someone with limited experience just take it easy and don't get cocky.

24:27 you can also use a ringloop or Prussik loop with a karbine, take the end of the rope, and use it as a pulley system

@@TPOTTS_TREES You are welcome. Something nobody seems to show, that might be a good video, is when to say no. Two days ago, I was asked to remove a dead tree. A tall oak, taller than the living trees around it. recently dead. twigs still bendable...well, I rigged SRT, climbed the tree to study it and make a plan for the next day when I would have a ground man. I am glad I did. The tree was unsafe to rig from. Being taller than the other trees, I would have to rig from the stem of this tree. What I found was a vertical split running up from about mid tree. I could see right through the tree. I am guessing a lightning strike had split it. Tree is beside a studio with a slate roof. I carefully came down and thought about it overnight and in the morning, I went there and retrieved my climbing line and my rigging line. I declined the job. I explained to my customer that I was uncomfortable with the split that runs up the tree, That split would open and close with the wind. He called a big tree company and they will come have a look. I am just one man. So, it would be helpful to folks learning to do arbor work, to know there is no shame in saying no. : ) George.

Glad I watched this. I have a lot of questions on how to tighten your rope when you walk the thin limbs and the rope is (partially) holding your weight. What I saw, you basically pull yourself on the rope with one hand and then remove slack with the other hand. Looks so easy but I'm sure it is not :)
Glad it helped. Yes on a srt system it's harder to return in from limb walks as you don't have a 2:1 system like Drt. You're pulling your full body weight back in and tightening with the other hand so some people struggle if they are a bit heavier

I've been doing tree work for 7 years now. Always been drt. Have a job with 4 large oaks to prune and didn't want to be humping up all of them drt so I got a srt set up.
This was super helpful just for seeing you move around. I've used srt for access a few times but never worked in it, it's gonna take some getting used to walking back in from a limb walk and not having the pulley advantage of drt but the energy saving of access will be well worth it

What a great video of climbing and redirecting around a tree. I'm a rec climber and this is something I'm still trying to learn. Thanks for sharing this info with us. stay safe! the only thing I'd say is that from experience keeping loops at the end of throw lines for some reason I often times manage to get them stuck in even the smallest broken branches and then not able to retrieve it. I use an anchor hitch to lessen this problem as I undo the hitch, remove the throwball, and pull the climbing rope with half hitches. sometimes even the metal ring of the throw-ball catches on something along the way just to make your life miserable. 😄🙃
Yes! They are even a blessing or a curse. Some days they are in first time, other days... Well you can't alway be lucky ;).

Great Video! You showed us all the basic moves! Loved the part where you explain not to put too much force on the limbs out toward the end when you are coming back - which would be very easy to do! How you must pay attention to keeping slack out of your rope and even keeping up with how much weight your main rope is holding of your weight! When I go from one limb to another it doesn't look like what you showed there :) it's a lot more creeping around and clunky your transition was very smooth as you glided down to the next limb! Clearly very experienced! Well done!

Great techniques and thanks for the upload! Just be extra careful not to fumble your line when unclipping/redirecting, you can become stranded up there on just a lanyard.
Yes, perhaps quickly tying the tail of your line to your belt with a slip knot may be a good idea. Thanks for the concern and positive words
If you ever unclip your lifeline you hold onto it like your life depends on it lol. And when redirecting you're just passing it around a union and clipping straight back in immediately.
@@verteup Yes, to be honest it was a mistake on my part to demonstrate unclipping like that.
I normally work on two lines as I work in the UK so I unclip one line at a time so I always have 1 even if I drop 1.

@@TPOTTS_TREES I would do it just like you did in the video. I live in the US I very rarely double tie in on a bridge we use our lanyard on hip d rings and main device on our bridge. Great intro srt vid honestly.
Glad to some teaching. Always wonder why so many videos of arborists getting killed e.g. cutting palmtrees.
Climbers in the UK are considered quite safe due to mandatory industry specific training required to work. Other countries especially America to my knowledge don't really have this causing people to give tree work a go when they aren't necessarily fully trained causing avoidable deaths/accidents.
Arboriculture is dangerous enough even with fully trained guys on site. Most of tree work deaths that are recorded aren't "Arborists" although I'm sure there are the unlucky few

There was a bit of a skip through steps at 12:35 when you fed your climbing system through. Are you able to elaborate on that? Thanks!
Apologies, I thought I was filming but the go pro crashed at that step.
At 20:15 I show a similar example.
Once you reach your top anchor point, strop into the tree with your lanyard. Then disconnect your climbing line from your bridge. After that, place your system through the next crotch above your head, then simply connect the system back onto your bridge. You then should be able to advance higher up to your new anchor point above your head. Continue these steps untill you have your SRT line in the desired final location.Then feed the tail of the line in the direction you want to go. You're then ready to start climbing around the tree.
If it's a long accent to the top of the tree I sometimes will get a groundsmen to untie the base tie and I'll turn the srt system into a drt system and advance the rest of the way up in a traditional manor then either stay drt or turn it back into a srt system once at the top with a retrievable canopy anchor.
In the UK you need to climb on 2 lines when working so on a average day I'll shoot as high as I can with my srt line. Climb to that. Then advance higher with my zigzag. Then set my srt line at the very top by placing the system through a crotch like seen in the video.

Really enjoyed that cheers. I’ve only been climbing for 6 months - currently using two ropes on DRT and looking to change one of them over to SRT so really useful mate :)
Definitely recommend doing that.
So srt options incase you want some advice.
Rope wrench and hitch climber set up.
Rope runner pro.
Akimbo.
Zigzag with chicane.
cheapest option would be the rope rench works great, tried and tested, new rope wrench just came out so you can adjust friction setting. However if you already have a zig zag then a chicane wouldn't be a bad shout.
I've used the akimbo a little and I liked it but it's expensive.
I haven't used rope runner but heard its good but looks a bit bulky for me.
Stay safe, first year of climbing can be dangerous but as long as you listen to your gut you'll be ok. Find a good teacher
Thanks for the response - I work for a firm with 20 or so climbers so I get input from each of them as we rotate in teams of two or three and try to pick the best habits from each of them :) I’ve had a go with the rope runner pro it’s an amazing piece of kit but I’m not spending that amount of money after already spending about 4 grand kitting myself out in the last 12 months haha. I currently use two hitch climbers so will probably go with a rope wrench to start with. Keep the vids coming :)

Great video mate you could of redirected of the tip to safely limb walk back down 😉
Also if your way out on a steep branch you can use your tail to control your swing back to your anchor could even use a munter hitch with your tail if you have a really steep angle
Great idea with the munter hitch. Only last week I was explaining the importance of a munter hitch to a colleague for self rescue in case your system breaks or fails.

Many examples have been given of how to walk safely on a limb, .and not walking on top of the limb but hanging on your rope at a 45 degree angle opposite the limb
I do notice that the distance between the rope wrench and the prussic cord is small, could this not cause problems where the rope wrench presses the prusic down when you hit a limb?

The rope wrench set up is pretty bullet proof as long as you replace your cord as it gets worn. I've never had an issue like you've mentioned, however I find it useful when going on limb walks to actually collapse the rope wrench onto the hitch with my hand so that it runs down the rope really smooth

Everything looks great what you doing I really love it but I didn’t see. How do you repeal can you make a video to explain and show? How did you descent from up down thank you
In tree work we use a friction device. Either a mechanical device or a friction cord which suspends the climber on the rope. You can tend the knot/ device to descend down the rope at your desired speed.

Yeah the end of the rope is more predictable on srt but if you do a few re directs it may no longer reach the ground without realising. You don't want to wish you put one in as you're falling down to earth lol

Yo I rate the video but I have a problem with you removing your only life line and posting it through a redirect is there a better way?
Yes you can climb through the crotch and drop down that way. To be honest it's a habit I developed as I normally climb on two ropes. I can pass one system through at a time while remaining safe as I'm tied in on my other system.

You can sit, on a 5 gallon bucket while you watch the rest of the guys lying on ground or sitting unfortunately at lunch time.. or waiting for the foreman to finish his speech... it’s a step, it holds gear like files, screnches and wedges. Don’t put a lot in it because you’ll need to throw it out to access the line.
Cubes wear the points out ALL THE TIME the metal pokes through. They’re expensive and mail order. Bags fall over and worse collapse inward making flaking aggravating as AUTOCORRECT
Put your gear over to the side, pull out your bag already tied to the line, throw it or shoot it idc over your target, walk over untie the bag, tie your line on, and pull it back in the bucket. You’re welcome.
