Despite Nick's well-intentioned attempts to keep Kevin on the agenda, Kevin's "redirects," brilliant mind, and deep experience shine through. Very informative and inspiring....
we use SRT for everything, exclusively, with Rope Runner as the center point device. Super easy, efficient and safe. Why anyone coming in would choose DRT / MRT or knots and hitches for that matter I do not understand. We have handed complete newbies our SRT set up and they are off and running. No isolating limbs, betting the farm on one limb. redirects around the canopy, spreading the load, easy to change the high tie in point, etc etc. Kevin may or may not be the very best presenter but everyday we thank him for the best device out there, the Rope runner rocks !
Im new at climbing with all bull set aside what is my easiest safest way to climb with the zigzap and rope wrench... ?... timlehnen@yahoo.com. Thanks,,,,,
Thanks so much Kevin Bingham for all the years you have added to my time in the canopies. Without a doubt in my mind you helped me be where I am today.
Kevin is a beast! A founding father! Dude would work circles around me! That being said he seemed very nervous for this video! I think nick put him on the spot lol!! Great info but Kevin said "uhhh" about 1,000 times!
I've seen this a few times but kevin Bingham is the fing man of course Thompson with the unicender but this man elevated the game and is truly a inspiration 👏
I can recommend PETZL RIG descender. I've used it in our fire department and for work. And I've even witnessed people being rescued by those descenders who were doing snow work on the roof. What happened was that they fell off the roof, hanging by their ropes, but they had pulled the rope weirdly so they didn't have enough rope left to safely descend on the ground.
1:08:24 that's the first time during a training that I've heard someone make that point & stick by it! 👍👏 people talk about rigging & lifting & putting really heavy weights on trees relying on fiber compression strength & no one bats an eye! talk about SRT & basal anchors & people loose there minds 😝
Thank you Kevin and Treestuff. The technique of using a sling and biner to advance a base tie is a fantastic idea that I never thought of. It's a great crossover skill from rock climbing.
55:00 the point of NOT using base anchor is safety. Basically, not having to worry about another end of rope is a positive when using a pole saw etc out on the tips of branches -or especially if you forget where the anchor end of rope is(when rope runs up on outside of canopy 1:07) - (with sun in your eyes) (thick canopy Blue gum Eucalyptus etc). When your are concentrating on pruning properly it can be easy to forget or miss the position of the base anchor -end of rope. One day I was in a 100 foot tall Blue Gum with very thick foliage and very wide crown (No central leader). Early morning sun in face. The base anchor end went up and along the "outside" of the thick canopy like at 1:07. (not through center of tree) I mis-judged where the base anchor rope was and was going fast with a pole saw. I could have got lazy and just used a chainsaw but I believe in proper reduction cuts... Anyway, I snagged the rope with pole saw and down I went. - I did catch myself and luckily I was tied in with lanyard.! Lesson was --reset line to go through the center of the tree where you can see it! Or see 1:01 (great safety back up ) Or tie in at top so you don't have to worry about the other end !
this is defiantly for advanced climbers, not for nubes like me, I don't have a clue about most of the stuff they are talking about! I had no idea so much went into climbing a rope.
1:23:20 Can someone list the equipment were use here? He went so effortlessly. Amazing! I want to climb our backyard tree like this and I don’t have any idea of the materials used.
Great video. I'm watching now and really enjoying it and learning a lot. I'm DRT now and it's what I learned from the beginning, but I'm wanting to try SRT for sure. I hate isolating and the friction on DRT. Thanks Treestuff and Kevin.
Thank you so much for this, and the many informative videos you upload! When Kevin talks about the 3:1 system at 26:50 , it looks like it interferes with the functionality of the Rope Runner a bit. He says "With the Rope Runner, you want to watch..." but doesn't end up finishing the sentence. Any idea what the warning was going to be? I'm a huge fan of the Runner...I just want to be aware of all potential limitations. I have an idea of what he was going to say, but I don't want to assume...
Just noticed that he connected his lanyard directly to the tether loop at the back end of the RW instead of the base by the carabiner. Does this give an advantage? Is this an 'approved' connection or is it a carry-over from the time of the box wrench? It seems to help with the vertical body position. Any comments?
Hi Keven, I would like to thank you for sharing the skills of your trade. From the beginning of your presentation I could not leave your show, absorbing as much as I could. A lot was missed because of the lack of detail shown because of little zoom in by the camera operator. As a logger/timber cutter I have supplemented my income with doing tree work on the side. I have always been curious about incorporating rock climbing technique into tree work. Until now my searching for expertise in this art, has left me clueless. The majority of my technique has been with the double rope canopy anchor with a good groundman. After watching you with the latest climbing gear I feel like a cave man. I can't wait to update my gear and apply these improvements. If you could link me to some literature in detail in the use and application of this tech, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you ! Be safe! You have a beautiful family. Mark Lake Quinault, Washington
Lots of good thing to talk about but, Very disjointed feels like it was done on the fly, Also putting down groundys saying wouldn’t trust them to tie & untie your ground anchors “train them! Who the hell is going to be the one rescuing you!” 😡 maybe have a clear structure of what kit/skill is being demonstrated in what order, should only have one person doing the instruction or share doing separate parts, then wouldn’t need to keep talking over each other which makes it confusing to follow, kills the flow & demonstrating the techniques clearly, video could probably have been done in about 30mins.
Those are two good options for climbing devices, but they're just one element of a complete climbing setup. It's also important to have proper training!
Yes you can. A munter with a hms binner or even a oval binner. If you have a 8 descender it works well also. Actually you can use it under or above your friction hitch - as soon as you release the hitch your weight will be transfered to the munter/8descender.
After 30 yrs of climbing the old fashioned way, no fancy bag of nick nacks, at 63, can pull myself up pretty fast with upper body and thrusting, just a simple climbing knot, still prob be up in the tree working way before someone gets out all the gadgets, and sets em up.
Been climbing for forty years we had it tough . With all this cool gear it looks easy Helmet communication , fantastic chippers the first ones made me deaf we hated them , one handed saws . Rightly so it's a hard job .
it's nice to see these videos, but its hard to keep information clear because of the delay. it could be tweaked on editing if it's not a live on youtube.. would help alot !
Bahaha I bought 1 thing from tree stuff and it got to my house like a month and a half later lol. Nvr again will I buy from them. I order from Amazon from now on and it takes them like 5 days at most.
Ok so all the clips and gear is cool but what about doing these techniques with straight knots and one clip ? And lanyards . Most of that equipment is expensive as hell. Hell a good rope alone for a cheap ones like 2bills
a little disjointed and some unfinished lines of thought.... but all in all a great overview and a wealth of information... thanks a lot for doing this!
Footlocking.. Wrong on so many levels... I thought this technique went out an age ago. seems to have had a resurgence in the 2020 climbing scene for some strange reason.

You can tell Kevin was being very patient with ol’ nick lol 😂
Absolutely. I descend with the hitch when blocking down wood on spar work

Awesome, Kevin and Nick. Great to see the historical reconstruction of the technique. Many thanks.

Just bought a wrench and my buddy at work is gonna help me start to learn srt
Party on kevin Bingham
Alex Sotnyk you’ll not regret learning. It’s a lot faster method.

Awesome , Helpful . . . . . THANKS !!!!
Freaking pioneer. Love that dude.

Great educational video, and thank you for you work and inspiration
Really nice job... and back flip!
Should rename Video history of SRT
Great video.
Thanks!

Great catch! I believe he's referring to this: www.treestuff.com/content/pdf/Rope%20Runner%20Classic/Rope%20Runner%20Classic%20Redirect%20Notice.pdf
How big is the rope for SRT with assender systems? What is the chances of mechanichal falure?
i have been using a jetpack for years but now im goin to SRT!!!

Any where I can find more info on the joey tree redirect?
Excellent video
What the best length and diameter backup rope choose for footlocking technique?

SRT= Spliff Really Tops!!!

The guy with the Mike is distracting me he keeps interrupting the climber and I can't hear him!
when triming small dead branshes or pruning instead of so much redirecting why are not pole saws used no some of the difficult to reach limbs???
Is the zig zag and roperunner my best way to climb a tree safely?..
Those are two good options for climbing devices, but they're just one element of a complete climbing setup. It's also important to have proper training!
What advantage(s) does the Quickie have over just using a carabiner?
Its shorter, doesn't derate when used in a choking fashion.
no chance of side loading
@@seanmccool1041 yep, don't want to side load a good steel one.
It's just me or audio is offset?
Shooot casi se saca los ojos 👀 ese man y aún usando casco 😳😳😳😳

„Just so you know foot locking is not all that easy...not everyone is as tall...and fit...and handsome as Kevin...you’ll never be as good as Kevin.“
it's actually easy though
Can't you put a munter behind the climbing system on SRT and safely descend without burning your hitch cord?
Yes you can. A munter with a hms binner or even a oval binner. If you have a 8 descender it works well also.
Actually you can use it under or above your friction hitch - as soon as you release the hitch your weight will be transfered to the munter/8descender.
“You got a ladder at Walgreens?” LMFAO
What’s the hot pink rope? Anybody know?
This videos may say not suitable for training but I learned from you tube how to climb srt, so they're pretty much training videos😁
us too.
When you weigh 250lbs as I do it is very dangerous to use a prusik without rope wrench....trust me
After 30 yrs of climbing the old fashioned way, no fancy bag of nick nacks, at 63, can pull myself up pretty fast with upper body and thrusting, just a simple climbing knot, still prob be up in the tree working way before someone gets out all the gadgets, and sets em up.
Kevin changed the way tens of thousands of climbers work every day, can't dispute that!
@@user-ku2qb1pq7e Yep ,seen a lot of them.
Cheers lads
Damn Nick. Let Kevin talk
Been climbing for forty years we had it tough . With all this cool gear it looks easy Helmet communication , fantastic chippers the first ones made me deaf we hated them , one handed saws . Rightly so it's a hard job .
Ahh, the old chuck and duck. Used one like 20 yrs ago.
it's nice to see these videos, but its hard to keep information clear because of the delay. it could be tweaked on editing if it's not a live on youtube.. would help alot !
This is one of our oldest videos, our production has improved a lot!
Thanks,
Why are you pushing ceu’s nick.?
Thank you
this video will be available enytime
Good information
why does kevin have a quickie on his lanyard????
He answers that at 1:31:50!
You do have to be lite and have great strength to weight ratio to use SRT.
I'm fat 😳
Cant wait to try flips up in the tree and freak people out LOL
Thank you sirs
Akimbo is the bomb srt or drt
Bahaha I bought 1 thing from tree stuff and it got to my house like a month and a half later lol. Nvr again will I buy from them. I order from Amazon from now on and it takes them like 5 days at most.
Oh no! Sorry you had a bad experience!
why he dont use proper carabiner to hook up through the knot to avoid accidental fall off the pin
So we just not goin to talk about that close call with that branch almost stabbing him in the eyeball 😳. 45:10
😲 That's what safety glasses are for!! 😎
ffs the bloke in the orange hat just needs to let Kevin get on with it and stop interrupting.
Made the video un-enjoyable
Jesus I wish he would shut tf up
See
Ok so all the clips and gear is cool but what about doing these techniques with straight knots and one clip ? And lanyards .

Hell a good rope alone for a cheap ones like 2bills
The climber is right I used the prussit all the time.
What’s the deal with both of them claiming to have invented the rope wrench?
Kevin invented the Rope Wrench.
Wow!
some people were not born with Mic skill, the microphone should be somewhere near the mouth hahahah. awesome video tho
What pants is Kevin wearing .???can't ever find anything light like that for deathly summer heat
Completely confusing me and I already know how to ascend and descend srt and drt an can't even understand
a little disjointed and some unfinished lines of thought.... but all in all a great overview and a wealth of information... thanks a lot for doing this!
Cherrylltree bought treestuff
Sorry didn't know this vid was that old
La primera vez que le presto atención en los 4 años que lo vengo pasando por alto... para darme cuenta que no dice una mierda
unfortunately you would probably have to hire a crane to lift it up out of the backyard and up over the house and into the front yard if possible
I don't think Kevin wanted to do the backflip.
I get the whole safety thing but cmon dudes you don't have to wear helmets doing this
They must be liberals or san francisco climbers..
Crane the skid out of the back yard
I cannot see how you can double the weight by using a different anchor point makes no sense
Ratio 2:1 as the anchor is at ground level and the rope goes over a limb adding a leverage point.
video is way out of sync with the audio
Lmao shhh Nick, with your knock-off petzl helmet
I know the best way to fix his loader. It’s called “Andrew Camarata”.
Footlocking.. Wrong on so many levels... I thought this technique went out an age ago. seems to have had a resurgence in the 2020 climbing scene for some strange reason.
I climbed today for the first time it wooped me. I need better gear for sure
This was very hard to watch!
Lol I live in big thicket lol
Nearly had an eye out and law suit on their hands moment. Just cut the pointy stick please.
So many broken sentences. It was really hard to listen. Unfortunately.
