  • Tesla's hyped Model 3 is finally here and we have a full review: roadshow.co/xxBbNs
    We're finally getting a chance to try out the 2018 Tesla Model 3, the long-awaited solution to Tesla's biggest problem: It sells cars that most people can't afford. The Model 3 is thus poised to shift Tesla down from hallowed, aspirational startup to legitimate, skeptic-free corporate success.
    That's a lot to demand from a single, $35,000 car. While my first impressions behind the wheel of the Model 3 made it clear the car was going to be good, there's one problem already: The car you're looking at actually costs $56,500. That mean it's no longer a competitor of the $37,495 Chevrolet Bolt EV and instead has been elevated up into the range of a nicely equipped BMW 3 Series -- or even a base 530e.
    Spoiler alert: it's great, but it isn't perfect.

    I cannot understand the argument that you need to be in an area with superchargers, most people's commute is nowhere near 300+ or even 200+ miles, so you just need to charge the car at home at night and for lots of people they can even only charge the car every other day or even once a week on the weekend, so that argument is not valid for 95% of the people.

    • @deathab0ve
      @deathab0ve 6 лет назад +11

      Shuriken that argument doesn't work for LA or NYC. Where are large portion of the population is. Land lords wont just give you a parking spot with a connector. So they are the ones who NEED a network. Everyone else is fine.

      For a 1.5 star mid south Manhattan apartment is currently $4,915 in monthly rent for 1 bedroom. For west south Manhattan you are looking at $4K. Cheapest I could find and it is really shitty and far from the center is $2,995 a month.

    Why do you need to live "not far from superchargers"? You actually never charge at superchargers unless you travel far from your home.

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 6 лет назад +4

      Correct. Most EV drivers charge at home overnight and have a full tank in the morning. Street parking, apartments, offices, will eventually have millions of charging locations. All that's really needed is electricity.

    • @JZainbear
      @JZainbear 6 лет назад +1

      What happens if you need to drive cross country and the nearest supercharger is 350 miles away? There are places like that.

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 6 лет назад +4

      Most Superchargers are about 100 miles apart on the major highways. Yes there are some gaps, but most of the major highways are covered. Tesla is adding Superchargers nearly every day. Other fast charger networks are also being built out now, and Tesla can use some of the other fast charger networks too, for example CHademo.

      That would be less than 6 cents per kWh. Where do you live that electricity rates are so low?
      Keep in mind that electricity prices vary quite a bit from location to location. The bottom line is... the battery in a LR Model 3 is about 78kWh and provides 310miles of EPA range (334 before Tesla's voluntary reduction). The battery in a P85D is larger at about 81kWh, and provides 253 miles of EPA range (at least 57 miles less than the 3). The larger battery in the P85D will always cost more to charge while providing quite a bit less range.

    A car that updates itself over the air, has broken the range conundrum, sits on your drive at the recommended 90% state of charge and it’s like leaving every day with almost a full tank. Has advanced safety systems that will get better and better and rated in crash tests one if the safest. Until you’ve experienced it’s older bigger brother on a drive like London - Northern Italy and back 2000 miles all in and the car handling 90% auto pilot of the motorway network flawless through five countries then come back and say what you think. The M.D. 3 will be just as great👏👏👏 as such a lower price point. The taxis M.D. S in Finland doing 400,000km without issue and 6% degradation when absolutely hammering the charging everyday for two years through two harsh winters says it all about the battery packs bulletproof build.

    I have a Model 3 long range all wheel drive and it is by far the best vehicle I have ever driven! It is several levels of magnitude better than any other car i have ever been in. It has exceeded my expectations and even surprised me on several fronts. For example I had a false belief that it might be inconvenient to charge a car instead of stopping and getting gas at a "convenience" store. It is the opposite. It's so easy, saves me time, keeps me from spilling stinking, toxic gasoline on my clothes and hands and I am taking money away from an industry that is pushing it's costs off on the health care industry. I installed a solar array before I purchased the car and also installed a 240 volt outlet. It is so much easier and literally takes 5 seconds for 98 percent of my charges. The super charging network is also very good and the V3 super charger is going to once again change everything forever!!!

    And quite a few things have changed through software now in 2019. You can adjust the follow distance on the right steering wheel scroll button and also cruise speed. You don’t have to go into the screen.

      You should be looking at the road, not a dashboard. The Speedometer in a Model 3 is highly visible. That's about the only instrument most people look at often. Tesla Adaptve Cruise Control can read and use the speed limits automatically too.

    • @J11s1
      @J11s1 6 лет назад

      Thats exactly why it should have a heads up display.... and if since you mentioned keeping eyes on the road having the Tesla 3 speed down and off to the right is even farther to look away from the road then if it had a regular dash, so you basically just proved why the model 3 speedometer is in the worst possible position lmao

    Per other owners, the wiper control screen pops up automatically when you use the stalk to activate mist wipe, so he shouldn't have had to dig through screens to get to it. Maybe he was in a situation where that doesn't happen / is overridden for some reason (phone call he mentioned?) or this car needs a software update?

    • @shethjones4494

      There is an automatic rain sensor that turns on the wipers. If you want a quick swipe, push the button on the left stalk. I've been driving the car in Seattle and haven't needed to use the touch screen to customize the wiper yet.

    • @christopherm.6094
      @christopherm.6094 6 лет назад

      Sheth Jones Agreed to an extent. But also keep in mind it is believed that the true reason Tesla did away with virtually all manual controls was in preparation for the future autonomous Tesla ride sharing service (I.e., so controls can be locked away from the riders and controlled by the car only or you remotely).

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 6 лет назад

      Yes, and many other functions are being automated using artificial intelligence (neural networks) such as the wipers. Manual controls won't be used most of the time, due to automation. These are being rolled out in over the air software updates. Voice commands too.

  • @JZainbear
    @JZainbear 6 лет назад +6

    Perfect review. Real autopilot is at least 5 years out. For 60K I'll wait for version 2. Workable auto pilot, HUD and better control scheme needed. Surfing through menus while driving ain't cool.

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 6 лет назад

      Voice commands are coming to most controls on Teslas. And the steering wheel scroll wheels will probably get more functions. So many of the functions are increasingly automated in Teslas by using artificial intelligence in such as windshield wipers, headlights, etc., that you really don't need to use many manual controls. This is simply a misunderstanding based on the early software release. Coming software releases automate more and allow voice control.

    • @JZainbear
      @JZainbear 6 лет назад +2

      I understands this . Coming software releases? Thats a lot of faith for 60K. Will you get your money back if it is not fixed properly with software update? These are critical safety issues. Even the best voice recognition does not work 100% of the time. How many times has siri givin us fits. Put a crying baby in the mix and lets see how it works. Voice controls have it limitations. Can you imagine having to tell all your passengers to be quiet so that you can turn on the wipers. All questions that have yet to be answered. I'll wait for version 2.

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 6 лет назад

      You don't need to use voice commands to turn on the wipers. They're already *fully automated using neural networks* on Model 3 today. Google's voice recognition very likely already outperforms humans. 500,000+ people think Model 3 is more than good enough to get. I'm one of them. The future software releases will continue to improve the car.
      BTW Tesla doesn't really make version 2 of cars. They continually improve them. Model S went through many major revisions over time. Even an early Model S is still an excellent car. The newer ones are even better.

    • @JZainbear
      @JZainbear 6 лет назад

      Good point on version 2. Its a good car. All I'm saying is there are poor design decisions and perhaps cost cutting that need to be addressed. Voice input has limitations (not just for wipers). There are key functions that should be immediately accessible to the driver, and not voice activated. Car needs more tactile controls and a HUD. Sure 500,000 is great but that does not mean that these items cannot be improved or that the buyers will be happy with these compromises a year later. Enjoy your car, you'll like it. Ill just have to wait.

      Jon Marshall - Gaming & Tech :
      True, but as Elon has said over and over and over and over again, they superchargers aren't meant for daily use. They are there for long trips. You're supposed to charge the car at home while it's parked to ease the cost of fuel.

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 6 лет назад +1

      Correct. Most EV drivers charge at home overnight and have a "full tank" in the morning. They don't use public chargers except for very long road trips. Charging locations wll be deployed by the millions in coming years for street parking, offices, apartments, etc. Anyone with a garage at home can charge at home.
      Most people in the US an EU drive fewer than 40 miles / 60 km per day, which can be easily met with even a 100 mile EV charged a couple times a week. EVs are highly practical already. Most people simply don't know it. EVs cost 1/3 as much to operate as fossil cars.

    • @jjoncm1
      @jjoncm1 6 лет назад +1

      well of course, I was talking about road trips or driving across state, all other companies can not even come close to the network that Tesla currently has. That's what I was saying. Of course daily use will be out of garage.

    So much of this is misconception. The first being people with buttons on the dash never look down to find said buttons--a lot of people seem to believe this but if you actually watch people driving most actually look for the button. The second is that you use the buttons less than you think. His example is the following distance for the adaptive cruise control. Most drivers have a preference or comfort zone they like. You try a few different settings to see what you like and then it stays there. Each driver has a profile tied to their key. Most of the settings in the dispaly are for fine tuning or seldom used.

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 6 лет назад +7

      Correct. Most controls in a car get very little actual use. The ones that get used somewhat often, like heating and cooling have permanent locations on the Tesla touchscreens.
      Tesla is automating more of the functions every day, like fully automatic windshield wipers, automatic headlights, etc., leading up to eventual full self driving.

    • @the1anonymouse

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 6 лет назад +2

      Model 3 has fully automated windshield wipers, probably using a neural network to see the water. You don't need to adjust the wipers.
      Tesla has traffic aware cruise control that uses radar, sonars, multiple cameras and artificial intelligence reading speed limit signs, etc., to adjust to the local traffic. It's all fully automatic. You can also manually set a speed, a difference from the speed limit, and following distance. The latter is speed sensitive. Teslas have very capable fully automatic cruise control. You can however adjust it. The speed adjustments for the cruise control are three buttons on the touch screen right next to the speedometer at the upper corner of the screen very near the driver's hand on the steering wheel: faster, slower, and use the speed limit. It's intuitive, quick and easy to use.
      Most people don't adjust the following distance very often. It's possible that will be added to the thumb wheels on the steering wheel, along with speed adjustment, in an over the air software update. Voice commands could also be used.

    • @jdstarek
      @jdstarek 6 лет назад +6

      100% wrong. US consumers spend about $1,500/year on gasoline. And a comparable car such as a Civic SI, Accord Sport, Subaru WRX, or Golf GTI can be bought for less than half (about $20,000-$24,000). With all the fed/state credits you'll pay around 50K for this car, plus the cost of charging and service. The cars I just mentioned would cost about 1/2, plus $6,00-$8,000 over four years (gasoline, maintenance, service). All this means that after 4 years of ownership you would spend about $15,000 more for the Tesla.

      The Tesla owners I've seen post data seems to show the cost of operation is about 50% that of an equivalent new car. That's not enough if a savings for the problems it brings...
      And Mass market cars nobody cares about the performance side.. they want range and reliability and low cost of operations.
      Can buy a nicely equipped NEW Prius with the safety options for $26k MSRP.
      Or even smarter buy a used Prius for $5-10k.
      I realize they are not the same class car... But that's the point.
      Tesla claims to be now selling a mass market affordable car... Except it's NOT... Either of those things..
      And if the quality control is not better than the model S,. They are going to be in trouble.
      I love EV's and all the new tech, but the financial part if this does not make sense.. your not SAVING money, your spending $50k when you could spend $25k. You will.never save $25k in expenses, unless you keep the car 20 years.. and nobody does that.

    • @micmag2375
      @micmag2375 6 лет назад +4

      saleenr6 I think he was talking about the ride comfort, Teslas have a very stiff suspension which makes them handle well but you must always comprise comfort for handling and vice versa. Safety is also a factor as Tesla cars have very little body roll due to stiff suspension, more like a sports sedan rather than a luxury sedan so you must compare to an amg or m3 suspension rather than a stock 330i or whatever

    • @saleenr6
      @saleenr6 6 лет назад +6

      Mic Mag fully understand, but he made a direct comparison saying Bmw is better in all aspects. I have 3 series 5 series and m3. The Tesla is more comfortable than the 5 because it’s more smooth and better sport handling than the m3, up until track usage. So for the average joe, it’s better in both departments vs bmw

    • @Stormking106
      @Stormking106 6 лет назад +3

      Sorry but thats simply not true... i also drove both and if your 3 and 5 series is not from the 90s it is definitly way more comfortable. The steering is more direct and you get a way better feeling of the ride. I like the Model 3, but for this price, it is still not as good as its competitors. Still expensive, i think the next generation of the Model 3 will be a serious attacker on the „old“ brands.

    • @saleenr6
      @saleenr6 6 лет назад +8

      Julius Maximus I have 2011 e90 3 series 2012 f10 5series and 2009 e92 m3. And I race tony karts for many years. What your not factoring In is that yes maybe the suspension is better set up in the bmw but the over all feel of the model 3 is much smother, leading to more comfortable steer. No revs, no engine, no transmission! Everything is one linear movement making the handling imo best out of them. Now if you really want to say, the back of a Mercedes s class is more comfortable fine,

    • @micmag2375
      @micmag2375 6 лет назад +3

      saleenr6 yes if you just look at the physics, the model 3 is better, the motors are low in the axles and the battery which weighs probably 400kg is low mounted in the floor, the shell of the car is aluminum. All these factors make the model 3 a much better handling car than the e90 bmw or newer coupe which weighs about the same or a little more than the tesla. The BMW has a large engine mounted high in the front of the vehicle as we've seen for over 100 years, steel shell, no weight in the floor apart from the 60 litres of toxic and explosive fuel and a few other bits and pieces. Some people confuse ride with handling. Tesla ride is a little bumpy but it will save your life and go around a track better than a standard BMW 3 series

    In fact it is not a step backward for the dashboard. Do not forget that this car is upgrade-able and Tesla does not make a car without thinking about it. The purpose is that the car will be completely voice interfaced so no need to touch anything.

    • @arispelius600
      @arispelius600 6 лет назад

      STEPHANE Jore that is only true once the software is pushed to the cars. Until then the controls on the screen are a problem. This might seem odd to you but a lot of consumers expect a product to work when they buy it, not at an unspecified time in the future. This reminds me of video games being launched with game breaking bugs that have to be patched after launch.

Most people will never need to use superchargers, (except on a big road trip) and most functions like following distance can be changed with the steering wheel buttons, voice control etc. Unlike any other car, this will all continue to evolve and improve with continuous (free) updates.

  • @orion789
    @orion789 6 лет назад +6

    Lol. On this issue of a sparse interior. I find it baffling that people are missing the obvious message being sent by the design of these cars. Yes, voice commands in the near future will replace the need for the physical switches, but that's still not the point. Just a cheap workaround/convenience. But all the little indicators such as the fact of where the info is displayed, the more specific way you must delve into the system to adjust drivers positions, etc., are subtly hinting at a more pertinent fact. This car is more cutting edge than we realize.
    The real message here is the car isn't designed for human drivers. Not in the long run. We k ow this academically, but I'll take it one step further. The car is the first stage design to actively deter human driving. It's meant to be 'more' convenient to be a passenger than a driver. It's meant to encourage reliance on its automated systems, because this car is meant to foster not just the revolutionary move to electrification, but the even more controversial move to driverless transport.
    Make no mistake. This is the car of the future. And in that future, you're more likely to be a passenger. Driver-assistance aids therefore become deprioritized.

    • @NhatHuyNg
      @NhatHuyNg 6 лет назад

      and how long until that 'future' happens? Do you mean this car's buyers are now paying for the value what they're gonna only use in the next few years? Then why dont simply wait?

    • @Awarenesspm
      @Awarenesspm 6 лет назад

      thats debatable, most of the software packages are purchaseable after you bought the car as an upgrade, and the extended battery needs depends on what you use the car for and how well suited your locale is to the range. The premium package is also added flair which you may or may not want. Same goes for the 2 engine variant. Its just that the first cars coming out of the factory are of 1 type, which makes logical sense as they increase their production rate and introduce the other variants into the other production lines.

    The review is a bit confusing "so close to perfect" but the UI has issues, have to use the single UI for too many things - distraction magnet, 'voice commands - it's coming, AP2 still lags behind AP1 - improvements are coming, rear heated seats (paid for) not enabled, hood alignment (left to right) looks off, $57K. The title of the review does not appear to match the reality of what the consumer is being offered today. Seems like the 'so close to perfect' verdict is premature especially when we have no long-term reliability / quality data - a Tesla challenge to-date
    YT is now awash with folks posting tons of Tesla content but I find it hard to believe one can be unbiased when there is something to be gained (Tesla gifts or a free car) via the Tesla referral code process. To-date Consumer Reports and Edmunds are some of the few reviewers who may not have a conflict of interest in what they report in their long-terms reviews of the Model 3.

      Tesla does not have a strong reputation for meeting functionality delivery dates
      January 2017 - Autopilot - 'Now, Musk has projected that the "Hardware 2.0" cars may surpass the older generation of "Hardware 1.0" vehicles and be "fully self-driving" in 3 to 6 months.' The date has come and gone.
      The rear heated seats people have paid for still are not operational. This notion of taking peoples money for standard functionality and not providing it seems unethical (especially when Elon has his head in the stars about Mars journeys). Software updates notwithstanding.
