Cav is a true Mr. July, he does turn it on at the Tour. And I could see the peloton, if conditions are right, gifting him a stage as an epic send-off salute, especially with his new status as a knight or something. But no gifts from Wout if he is on form. Or maybe, who knows, it is sport and entertainment and showbiz and big deals on wheels. it'll be fun to see, either way, not that he has to win another stage and maybe that's the poetry, the Knight in a tie with the King. 😀
Eric Heiden sweeping every speedskating event (500m, 1000m, 1500m, 5000m & 10,000m) at the 1980 Olympics, is the greatest sporting feat for a sporting event ever, and will never be matched. It would be like a track athlete winning the 100m, 200m, 400m, 1500m & 5000m at the same olympics
@@MariaScreamapova Agree 100%. I always felt he was slighted the recognition he deserved because of the "'miracle on ice" was in the same Olympics. Besides being a member of the 7-11 team, Eric won the U.S pro road cycling championship in 1985.
Don’t forget Beth Heiden. Also a world-class speed skater and cyclist. Olympic bronze and triple World’s gold medalist in speed skating and won the 1980 World Championship Road Race. Won it. Decent genetics in that family, eh? 😅
Not one single elite sprinter has or will ever have a period of winning World Tour races or stages the way Cav has. Those early wins at Columbia, HTC and even with SKY in the teams first TDF win in 2012 and he is still winning stages of World Tour events in 2024 as he did in the Tour of Hungary just weeks ago. Other elite sprinters have had a dominant period of maybe 2 or 3 years Cav is still winning after 15/16 years. When you take into account he lost 4 years of his peak to illness and shocking bad luck with crashes his winning record would have been ridiculous and his TDF stage wins would have been close to the 50 mark instead of 35!
I think Cavendish chances are high as long as ge stays up. Not many riders i dont think will dare go 50 50 with cav when it comes to shoulder barging and lane discipline in final 100 metres . If another top sprint rider drops out he definitely got a chance
The low hert rate rides I have problems with on my own because there's always someplace I start to push. What I've found to work is ride with someone who's fitness isn't as good as yours! I'm 51(in ok shape) & have been playing tour guide for a 70 year old coworker.
On the subject of Zone 2 training: it would be great if you could do another program about Zone 2 training for over 50’s (you’ll both be there sooner than you think! :) ...Even with an average nominal max heart rate of 170bpm (220bpm minus 50), it can be extremely difficult to stay under 119bpm (70% of max), even on a totally flat ride. I’m an ex pro triathlete, who rides around 200km / week. Yet now at 55 years old, I struggle to keep my heart rate in what is apparently my Zone 2 under 115bpm! (70% of 165bpm) on any ride! I can hold 30km/hr on the flat at 130bpm, but at 115bpm, I’m riding at 15km/hr! It strikes me that the Zone 2 equation must change for over 50’s compared with riders at their peak in their 20’s and 30’s (which has been the focus of most Zone 2 data). ...Is there any evidence that the 70% of max hr rule for Zone 2 training goes out the window over 50? Surely Zone2 training at 115bpm (or under 130bpm in general) actually becomes ineffectual. We old fella’s reach our max hr fast on any hill (because our max becomes naturally low as we age) we accept that. But knowing how to hold steady at say 80% of max hr is the secret to continuing to cycle with any dignity in a bunch doing 30km/hr. ...Zone 2 for a 55 year old, even riding on my own, at just 115bpm is almost not riding at all! …genuinely looking forward to your thoughts. Cheers
Call me a hater but I don’t think he will get the win. The pro peloton is getting faster and faster each year which will take a toll on older legs leading up to the sprint. Secondarily, as you mentioned the sprinter field is a bit limited BUT the guys that are there are stronger than MC. I feel sprint craftiness can only go so far when up against young testosterone and aggression. Lastly, I just don’t want him to take the record from EM - who got his TDF stage victories in literally every classification.

Eric Heiden, who rode for 7-Eleven, was a pretty good speed skater.

Always worth reminding everyone Cav has the record.
Now beaten it
The Cav came through, he is a beast.
Cav is the only reason why I will be watching sprint stages at TdF. Ok, at least final 10 km 😂😂😂😂

Chances are low, but sprints are chaotic and he is good at the chaos, so the chances are not zero.
Chances of Cavendish winning 1 or more stages: 37%

Nothing is more embarrassing than revisiting two week old predictions.

I believe if the team shelter him from wind, give him a quality lead out and position he will take 2 or 3 stages!
