I expected more, I felt maybe the rear light with the rubber aero seat post mount was holding his aero gains back a bit too much, spend the 10 quid for the rail mount IMO. Few adjustments on the bike he nails it next time.

I met David a few years ago in Girona and did a couple of rides in a group he was leading. No surprise he was (still) fast, but what I really noticed was how _well_ he handled the bike. Cornering on rails, casual parallel bunny hops up and down curbs, live mobile phone streaming on insta…. all just so easy. I guess the word is ‘panache’. It was a side of cycling that doesn’t get much air time, and was great fun to watch.

Aah, this takes me back! To Ashford Wheelers in the mid 80s when I did a few tens on my steel Reynolds 531c tubed Woodrup. A beautiful bike running ultra skinny tubs. My fastest time was 26.02. Nothing to set the world on fire but satisfying enough for me as an amateur. Our fastest rider back then was Neil Pucknell who regularly did 19 minutes something. He was the only one on a purpose made TT bike. Early low profile with a smaller wheel at the front. He had a massive single chainwheel at least 60 tooth with a 5 gear freewheel! I'm still fairly local to the course which was on the A20 between Ashford and Hythe in Kent where we congregated at the legendary blue and white cafe. I often do part of it now as part of a bigger ride on my carbon Giant Defy. David should be a regular on GCN. His natural, warm and intelligent presenting style is engaging. Bloody impressive time too!

Loved the video. I too stated my love of cycle sport at a local 10mile time trial. These are fantastic events and the absolute backbone of grass roots sport. Nice to see a heart felt and honest video from David and wonderful to highlight the club cycling events.

Really enjoyed this, thanks guys. I once said in front of an older club coach, Cycling is like a DRUG, he was astounded that I mentioned the word, haha, but what I meant was ,the more you do, the more you want,Dave certainly seems to still perform "drug free" like his best. I am nearly 76, and still love the bike, slower maybe, but what the hell. Thanks GCN, keep up the good work.

Very sad to hear that many ex pro cyclists don't even want to ride a bike at the end of their careers😢
As an ex club Time Trialist, maybe I need dust of my old TT bike and do the same.

A lovely film! As an older rider who is still keen on speed and performance it’s great to see the difference a former pro gets out of the gear, but the essential ingredient is dedication. I’ve been following DMs journey back and he’s got his form very quickly. Inspiring stuff.

OK, now I've watched this. 370w is phenomenal! My maximum FTP has reached 315w during my peak, and that murdered me! I'm now down to a respectable 295w. (I'm only a lowly amateur cyclist!)

It's amazing what genetics can do. When I was younger I could never run at more than 4:30/km for long periods no matter how hard I trained and there was one guy in my home village that would turn up to races, untrained and could consistently do sub 30min 10 kms. With Dave seems to be similar. 370W is probably my 10-15 secs power no matter how hard I train and Dave does 370W for 20min probably with very little training. Good on you Dave for turning things around. My mate from running when I was a kid, never turned things around and ended up succumbing to cirrosis from too much drinking...

I loved this. I've followed a few TDF stages while on holiday over the years and remember seeing David at the Annecy TT in 2009. The speed was insane. And 370 watts at 47 is pretty f mega. I felt quite nostalgic seeing him back on the bike. This could be a great series. Contador tackles the Tourmalet again and so on.

I really enjoyed this, it was great to see,,,, and at 58 and returning back to TT’s after 20 odd years,,,, tech, it’s fantastic.
I was at a recent open TT and the really nice young man was there, Alex, winning the event and very approachable, so on talking to him threw him a challenge.
A young Alex on a road bike v the ‘older’ David on his mega bike,,,, he said YES 🥳 if GCN would allow he would be up for the challenge.
All you young and old RUclips fans, let’s get behind this, it would be a great challenge for both 🤞
