    From your crafty Chemical Engineer - denatured alcohol is ethanol (think vodka) with chemicals in it to taste bad and make you vomit so you can’t drink it and get around the alcohol taxes. Yes it burns but so does isopropyl alcohol, so it has the same flammability risks. And so does gamsol. Gamsol, also known as odorless mineral spirits, is distilled from gasoline. All these solvents need to be carefully stored and used in a well ventilated area. Also an N95 or cloth mask wont stop these vapors from getting in your lung. You need a special respirator that has cartridges that absorb the special chemical you are dealing with, so always use with good ventilation. And Sandy - I love all your videos!

      This is what I found when I looked up the ingredients for Ranger blending solution. Since you're a chemical engineer I wanted to get your thoughts on it. I don't plan to try it, but I have seen posts were people added glycerin to alcohol to make a homemade blending solution, and I wondered what you thought about the two things.
      When I looked up the ingredients For Ranger blending solution, it had ethanol which folks have said is the same as denatured alcohol but then it had a semi colon rather than a comma, glycol ethers would you can buy, and isopropanol which appears to be the same as isopropyl alcohol. Of course we don't know the percentages, but I found that interesting.

      I took a year of inorganic and a year of organic chemisry, not exactly a chemical engineer, but.... I remember one of my profs saying that chemicals with pH of 2.5 typically have serious warning labels, but that is the pH of Pepsi! Anyway, my point is, I think many of the chemicals we use around the house (high concentration alcohols, etc) are probably treated more nonchalantly at home than they would be in a lab. Go figure.

    Justin case your curious sterno is denatured alcohol in a jellied form. It’s not dangerous but it is flammable.

  • @amyraefox

    Heads up to beginners that the N 95 style mask pictured does not filter out organic vapors, which is why a respirator mask is recommended for working with alcohol inks in not great ventilated areas. The cloth masks and and 95 style masks filter out particulates, but not organic vapors as those produced by evaporating ISO- these won’t protect you from alcohol at all. Thanks for taking the time to do this comparison video for us!

    Denatured alcohol is a different type of alcohol (ethanol vs. Isopropyl), which is why it evaporated so quickly. Thanks for taking all the time to wait for the alcohol to dry, and keeping this very scientific. As I majored in biology in college, I for o r, REALLY appreciated fhis

    When I was a studio photographer we used denatured alcohol to clean the inside of the camera in the area that we would put the film. I do think as someone else mentioned that an actual respirator is a good idea for a lot of Crafters. Definitely if you get into working with resin. But depending on how much you use any types of alcohol where your breathing the fumes they're cheap and certainly can't hurt better safe than sorry. If you only do a little bit of it now and then yeah that's not necessary, but if you do a lot it's not a bad thing to have. I am NOT a pink person at all and you just about pinked me to pieces LOL but I'm really glad you turn those into cards. Sometimes the simplest of things can make something really pretty. Even if it is Pink LOL and thank you for taking the time to do this. I've heard of people adding glycerin to alcohol to make alcohol blending solution. I'm going to respond to one of the chemists on here with a question about blending solution ingredients

    Love to watch the ink flow around the paper. Although this is not a medium I would use, I always learn something in your videos. I have used denatured alcohol mixed with shellac in the past and used it as a wood sealer. Makes the wood like glass after is it sanded. So it has many uses! TFS

    Thank you so much for comparing and explaining differences/similarities of these blending solutions in a true scientific manner. Very helpful and interesting video!! Side note - - I agree with others who mentioned warnings of using Denatured Alcohol. It is a fuel used in alcohol stoves on boats - and - it really does a great job of cleaning crud from glass and tile in the shower and other areas with smooth surfaces. However - - It is very important to follow the recommended guidelines when using any type of flammable, toxic, etc... type of product. Just be smart and careful!! :-)

    Sandy, a great comparison video. I have used 71% isopropyl alcohol (after watching Tim H. demos) I found I didn't get the same effects that Tim showed so I'll try the 91% next time. Ranger Blending Solution contains resin so it should not be sprayed from a bottle, for example, as it's sticky and can be breathed in to your lungs. Thanks for all you share. xo

  • @donagreen3436

    This was very helpful and greatly appreciated. According to Tim Holtz, the blending solution contains some type of resin - another reason he says not to blow the ink/solution with a straw and to never mist/spray the solution.

    • @donagreen3436
      @donagreen3436 3 года назад

      @Deejay d Per Tim Holtz, the Ranger solution contains a resin and no glycerin. He has explained that several times in his videos, including in his most recent Live of 02/20/2021. He also explains it as why the colors stay more vibrant vs blending with just alcohol or alcohol/glycerin.

    Denatured alcohol was used in the lab in the Bunsen burner. All alcohol should be used carefully. I have most of those levels as well have the denatured haven’t used it. It does burn so be careful. It burns hot and clean that’s why it’s used in the lab.

  • @CardsbyMaaike

    denatured is used here for your fundeu burners in the olden days, it's denatured de-natured...as they add stuff to make it taste bad and cause vomiting so you can consume it, in the netherlands it's also coloured blue , but it;s not car fuel or the like, they also use it to fire up barbies . greeat comparison

    Hi Sandy! I should of known you have made a video about testing or making your own mixing solution. Btw before coming to RUclips to see what I could find I went straight to the internet due that my local craft stores don’t have the ranger solution in stock. And I was surprised to find out that the mixing solution has few drops of glycerin in the recipe which it totally makes sense now watching your video and how the ranger solution differentiates from just using alcohol. So, thank you. I’m not going to buy all the alcohol options 😜 instead I’m going straight with the 91% and glycerin until I can get my hands on the ranger one! 😉

      hi, may I know if 71% alcohol works if I add glycerin ? coz in my local stores, 90%+ alcohol cost 30-50% more than 71-75% alcohol. thanks!

    We used denatured alcohol in the office to clean the rollers on the copiers. It would remove anything that was adhered to the rubber rollers or sticky substances. I have a little in my craft room that was in an old file cabnet that I bought to store some of my supplies in. Now I am wondering what would happen if a little gamsol applied to yuppo and some alcohol ink would happen?

    Seems denatured alcohol is banned in Canada, California and a few other states (according to a couple of articles online)! It is definitely controversial.. That said, thanks for a fascinating review on these solutions!

    • @mcescher1957
      @mcescher1957 3 года назад

      What ISN'T banned in California? There will be risks with ANY alcohol...I believe that denatured alcohol is actually the closest thing to Copic blending solution. Store carefully, don't be stupid and you will be fine,. It's good to be wary of something we don't understand...but we are scaring ourselves too much, I think. (btw- I have been using DA for years in my art...I'm still alive, I don't breathe it in and I don't drink it....common sense I think??? lol

    hi sandy , may I know if 71% alcohol works if I add glycerin ? coz in my local stores, 90%+ alcohol cost 30-50% more than 71-75% alcohol. also, in terms of performance, any difference? (can't see clearly , would you mind to tell? ) I used heat gun so time for drying doesn't really matter. thanks!

      I’ve never tried it-I also don’t know if you add glycerin to the cheaper one, is the cost the same? Try it and see if you want tho.
