This was one of STEVEN'S interviews with Ed......Steven Rosen and Jas Obrecht did all the best interviews with ED. They were his buddies too basically.

It’s wonderful to hear Ed playing guitars unamplified so you can hear how well his hands sustained the strings acoustically before there was even a cord signal to an amp, How his sound was not over dependent on equipment but was in his fingers on the fretboard.
It's all in the fingers for sure ✌️
This is why the albums sound so good. It's basically a live recording in a small room with no crowd noise. Really raw and perfectly imperfect.
That was what set this band apart from anyone else. They captured the live sound on tape.

@@fivestring65ify I'm the One is the best rhythm part of all time. I think it's proven by how almost no one can nail the part. Even he had to warm up to it.
Love it when Ed breaks out the Deep Purple songs and solos from memory. Like him playing Cream stuff note for note just from his love of the songs.
I was So Happy I was right at the age I was when this all these Brilliant Rock Musicians were just coming out 1982 I was already a Big Rock Fan and because of some Health issues growing up Music was my Life Line and I was already a Huge Sammy Hagar Fan and became when I was really young my first Hospital stay and my Uncles gave me a record player and had kept all their Beatles collection records instead of going to Beatles bonfires after John Lennon stuck his foot in his mouth and I Loved their Music it led me down this path of Classic Rock Music was very important and then at 15 diagnosed with a serious illness and had to have emergency surgery and this was 1977 and not knowing much about what was wrong with me and going through a couple dozen Doctors to find diagnosis I was just starting my first HS year only after 2 weeks I had to withdraw and start my Hospital stay Music went with me I had a Incredibly Beautiful Nurse who became my Best Friend and she took Great care of me she would come see me on her days off and it was not until last year that I found out the urgency in getting the major surgery while my stay at first was fun with came time night before surgery my Dad had taken me and my brothers to Astro World like Six Flags that night my Dad was staying with me in my room and these Doctors came and got me to take me on tour of what was fixing to happen and they basically Scared the living Hell out of me I told my Dad no way can’t do this and just said we had to leave my parents were divorced but everyone was good there and my Mom remarried was staying with friends and my Dad didn’t trust Hospitals so I had convinced him and we were planning our leave but my Beautiful Nurse who had changed her schedule and was going to be there with me that night she knew about some of what they were going to do showing me they had come a couple hours earlier than was scheduled my Nurse was supposed to be off but she knew that would be hard for me to swallow so she got there and could sense I was going to leave and that I was scared and she was Awesome she convinced me to stay and averted any scene with me and Dad being gone the surgery easy nearly all day and was a open heart procedure and had to cut open sternum intense finally when they brought me too in ICU first news I was told Lynard Skynard Plane crashed while I was in surgery and some members had been killed and that was all I thought about and then when I realized I was in the worst Pain Ever and ask Nurse for anything my Doctor’s were not sure about my illness and giving me pain meds they would not even allow me Tylenol nothing for 3 and a half days I was wide awake my Nurse knew my Music was everything and that was my Escape after finally going home was supposed to recover more than a year and at home with everyone gone during day my oldest Brother had a Great Classic Rock Album collection and I made up my own class everyday finding the Era of The Greatest Rock Music ever and after Big Valley every day it was Music all the way up Thank God people worked in neighborhood my mailman Loved it could hear up and down block My Doctor was Amazed how fast I was recovering and finally after recovering enough the very first time I got to leave the house to go do something my oldest Brother took me to my first concert with Great seats Head East and that was all it took Wow Rock Music Live from 77 to now I am within a couple of concerts of having gotten to go to 700 concerts Oh and the Music was Awesome was a Ozzy fan well really a Randy Rhodes Rudy Sarzo and Tommy Aldridge and Jan. Of 82 went to Dallas Tx to see Ozzy Wow the Band was Great about a month and a half later got news about Randy getting killed and was bummed but still going to as many concerts as I could I remember the summer of 82 had my Texxas Jam tickets and Ozzy was scheduled when I got to see Brad Gillis Live first time I was Blown Away and was Ok Ozzy pulled his wig off apparently shaved head I had my very Favorite Bands Triumph Journey Sammy Hagar a lot more so any time Sammy came close I was there and Night Ranger opened for Sammy and I was Stunned Oh Wow just those 2 Bands playing together still one of my favorite concerts with a couple Great Bands and Night Ranger was The Perfect Hard Rock Great American Band with The Perfect Songs and I went to see them many times still do The Seven Wishes Tour with Joe Lyn Turner opening This was something I never understood Night Ranger Band and Songs hands down should have been so much Bigger I didn’t get why not and if it was because hair metal Night Ranger was before that and bands like Motley Crew and Poison were really not that Good they had their gimmicks but it was not until later the music got better anyway Brad Gills will Always be up there with my Favorite Guitarist and his guitar playing on that Van Halen tribute album Oh Wow!

EVH was an individual created of a perfect storm. His innovative nature and refusal to accept the tools available to him, to me, was the driving force everything he did. Playing fast means nothing - EVH did it in a musical and enigmatic way that expressed what he heard - not copying what others were doing.
Exactly.
That, plus he doesn't look like the type to give into frustration. He had the appearance of carefree tenacity. I suppose he had a battery of traits that allowed him to do all this stuff that had never been done before. Before anyone had played fast, one might think it can't be done, or it's not worth the trouble if it can.
Very few overdubs made their music sound great live. Eddie was a true musician who cared about music more than money.
Any musician cares about music more than money lol. If you cared more about money you would become a banker or something

It’s funny the band shit on Van Halen 2 for years and years in interviews. Eddie was the king of six strings and ten fingers.
The more time went on, the more they would shit on their previous albums. In the 90's specially the Van Halen brothers became so snobbish, they were unberable. And already in the 80's Eddy, after defending Diver Down from criticts, saying yes, he did lots of cover songs on that record but he added his flavor to them, after being so pissed about critics being so savage on Diver Down, then same Eddy puts out more records and then he himself craps on Diver Down saying that he rather flops with his own songs than go big with other's songs... Like come on!
And I hated it when on an 90's interview the brothers shat on Panama and Dance the night away, agghh, they were so stuck up losers in 90's...
@@karlimo4034Eddie, beautiful and ethereal music genius and innovator, was often loaded given interviews lol. He probably didn’t mean to shit on his older work but given that he was loaded, spilled the truth. He probably thought that because it was his work, that he was allowed to shit on it, forgetting about the fans’ love for x work. It’s also natural for people to be defensive of their work.
