The Long Trail Thru-Hike 2024 Ep. 5: Stark's Nest Sunset

  • Thanks for checking out episode 5 of my Long Trail northbound thru hike attempt! I chose to make a series of videos for this hike instead of one longer documentary style video. I will be uploading a video every Saturday morning for the next few weeks! Stay tuned and would love to know what you think.
    Trail Journal:
    day 10 fri june 14: woke up at 5am to slight rain and hiking by 6. still so buggy. crossed middlebury gap and climbed to boyce shelter for breakfast. climbed breadloaf mtn and chilled at emily proctor lodge. great view from mt roosevelt. setup camp at cooley glen shelter. put tent up, got water, soaked dinner, relaxed. saw 2 dayhikers and one sobo backpacker lady. said lots of blow downs and bushwhacks. 13 miles 3900ft up 2900ft down 21400 steps.
    day 11 sat june 15: slept in, was freezing last night. woke up 6:45 hiking in an hr. climbed mt grant for a good view! hiked down to sunset ledge and talked with a day hiker a bit. lincoln gap had trail magic! grabbed a gin sparkling drink "long drink" hiked up mt abraham 2 miles 1600ft. rested at battell shelter. talked to ridge runner "eco" on mt abraham. hiked across the ridge to mt ellen. found camp at starks nest ski hut part of mad river glen ski area. talked with Lost n Found for awhile and two more backpackers. talked to kelli awhile and chilled. 2800steps
    Planned Long Trail Re-supplies:
    1. Manchester / route 11 / mile 58.5 / 4 days, 14.6 miles/day
    2. Rutland / route 4 / mile 104.5 / 3 days, 16.6 miles/day
    3. Waitsfield / route 17 / mile 163 / 4 days, 15 miles/day
    4. Stowe / route 108 / mile 207 / 3 days, 14.7 miles/day
    5. Journey’s End / mile 271 / 4 days, 16 miles/day
    GEAR LIST
    MAIN: 50L pack/rain cover, 1 person trekking pole shelter w/footprint, 20 degree sleeping bag w/sleeping pad
    CLOTHES WORN: shoes/socks, long sleeve, pants, hat
    CLOTHES PACKED: sun hoodie, puffy, rain gear, short sleeve, shorts, socks/underwear, camp shoes
    COOKING: food/bear barrel, spork, lighter, pot/stove, water filter, 2 smart water bottles, 1 bladder
    ETC: headlamp/batteries, TP/trowel, knife, poles, ID/card/cash/key, towel
    TOILETRIES: toothbrush/toothpaste, hand sanitizer, floss, sunscreen, ChapStick, Ibuprofen, Zyrtec, tape, nail clippers
    TECH: power bank, phone, airpods, gopro, DSLR/lens (for ~100miles); extra AAA batteries/iphone/USB chargers/SD cards

    That is one rocky trail! The breeze at the top must have been so welcome.

    Really enjoying your hike (I discovered your channel while looking for LT videos as I am planning a thru hike on it in September/October).
    The world felt small in this video when you met my friend and fellow SAR teammate, Lost and Found (I actually gave him his trail name!). I figured it had to be the right ‘Lost and Found’ when you mentioned his background, and then I heard his voice and knew for sure!
    I look forward to watching your next video and happy trails! 😊

Lost n Found was awesome and had really good info about the trail ahead. definitely appreciated the boiled water for my dinner too. im headin out to pisgah now actually! by the way good luck on your hike, a sept/oct thru hike sounds magical, i know you're gonna enjoy it. cheers
