I read Anna Karenina recently. There was a very useful and necessary ‘list of principal characters’ at the beginning of the book which unfortunately contained a major spoiler!
WHY do they do this!! That's a list that people would be likely referring back to while reading the book and to include a spoiler?! That boggles my mind.
I wholeheartedly agree with you about those awful stickers.
they are so bad! for sure ruin the covers and the vibe of the books.
If I see an Oprah sticker, I will not buy it!
I’m listening to Demon Copperhead now. So I don’t see the cover. ❤
LOL, I also prefer paperbacks, but I bought the hardcover of Demon Copperhead because the paperback is so darned fugly!
honestly, this is such a vibe and i love it haha. you really get it.
Yes! I'm with you. Also, F those stickers. Good LORD.
They are the WORST!! I can't believe that anyone truly likes them
Totally agree with all of this except for the spoiler issue. I so wish I could forget, but it Sticks in my mind the whole time! Arghh! I think I've only dog-eared a book of mine once and then felt bad, so I've never done it again. Really can't stand if someone else does that to a book I've loaned them.
the spoiler sticking around would be awful =( i would never ever dog ear a book someone lent me! i would feel horrible.
You are so lucky about the spoilers! I could never dog ear someone's book- sacrilege! haha Love your channel and will subscribe. xo@@WellTraveledBooks
You're very right about paperback being a long wait time can be frustrating as a paperback reader! I think sometimes if the hardback is doing well they keep on selling it and push the paperback further away. I really don't like stickers either :( Demon copperhead is so ugly in paperback it puts me off :'( no synopsis on the back is so frustrating!! I like deckled edges but I don't really need them. I also turn the pages in a way where deckled edges don't slow me down. It basically doesn't effect my want to get it. I have to admit I don't like notes in secondhand books either and would lower my chances. Sometimes book tags are there but aren't called book tag in the title (this is how I tend to do them) and I do tags during my sprints with patreons! Yeah I never see CoHo or SJM on tiktok at ALL and that's because the algorithm has learned. In fact, I think it knows I make book content but watch not book content :P (because I have a booktube for that)
Waiting for the paperback makes me realize how impatient I can be lol. I also don't think I will ever get over the blasphemy of that cover of Demon Copperhead. There was so much backing behind it I'm sure and THAT is what they decided to do? Nah. Wrong. I am so glad to hear that you also don't get CoHo or SJM content haha. The algorithm knows what we want to see, that's all I'm saying hahah
The Da Vinci Code is to blame for the long gap between hardcover and paperback. It was only available in hardcover FOREVER and still on the best seller list. I never read it, but I worked for Barnes and Noble for about 4 1/2 years. The hardcover of Demon Copperhead in America at least has part of the cover that it was part of Oprah’s Book Club. How have you never been inside a Barnes and Noble? They used to be very nice bookstores, not so much now. Thanks for doing the tag! 💛
I will now never read the da vinci code out of spite. That's awful. I hate that it spurned so many publishing houses to follow suit and not put out the paperbacks sooner. Also, I am originally from Canada and even though I traveled a lot to America, i somehow never ended up in a B&N!
@@WellTraveledBooks I haven't read it myself (nor do I intend to), but it was in hardcover FOREVER!
I don't like it when the back of the book has a whole biography about the author but no synopsis. Especially in classics.
I don't know if I have experienced this before but I would hate it 🙃
Love your hat 🙂

Very late watching this, but I thought the exact same thing as soon as Jack said that line (I watch probably 75% of his videos). A classic Booktube statement that has been made in one form or another for ages. -Becks
Yes! It really showed the bubble that he lives in.
Totally agree about ugly book covers. I know the saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover” but like that’s the point of a book cover. Let’s be honest here! If I’m browsing in a bookstore I see the cover first, then title, then author. I do not have time to read the synopsis on the back of every book to find something that interests me. I just don’t have an entire week every time I go to a bookstore. The cover is critical to catching my interest for me to pick it up and read the synopsis. Your example is great. I was really interested in Demon Cooperhead when I heard about the release and saw the hardcover art. However if I saw that paperback in a store I would not at all be interested in even finding out what the book was about. Also I cannot stand the covers of romcom and romance books lately. They look like a five year old was commissioned to create the cover art. They are so infantile looking and I think they’re hideous. I don’t read those books at all, just not my genre, but omg I cannot stand seeing them.
It is exactly the point of a book cover! Sure, we can overlook a bad cover if we need to, but a cover is supposed to draw us in! I am forever devastated by the cover of Demon Copperhead. I genuinely think I will never get over it haha. It's like a personal attack every time I look at it.
Romance covers these days also do not feel as though they tell the reader what is going to happen in them. I read a few because, since the covers look so childish, I thought that there would be less smut in them? Boy was I mistaken. I am not against smut, but the covers made me think these would be something very different.
I used to dog ear my books, and really worn library books when I was a kid and in early teens, but I think when I started reading more manga along with novels I grew out of it so as not to damage the art.
OOH actually I have never ever dog eared or written in a manga or graphic novel. The art feels much too precious for me to add my own personality to it. Great point.
Ahh yes! I was just saying I'm not going to read this until the paperback comes out. I read a lot of new releases but would never buy a hardback, it's just such an unpleasant reading experiences. And yes to the permanent stickers, I really avoid them as much as possible.
The worst thing is authors like Barbara Kingsolver actually have the power to demand things like real art on the cover, but they don't =/
Dog-ear-er for lifeee!
I weirdly find it comforting to read hardbacks from a library, but if I own the book then I hate it (usually). I can't wrap my head around that one.
YES SHE DOES!! It should be something that authors with power would care about, as they are artists too. Hmm lots to think about here.
Dog ear baby, for ever and ever =D
The thing that really annoys me with the book publishing is when there is a paperback but it's huge and non-standard size and then you're stuck with this Gulliver of a paperback that is neither here nor there.
The other two things are rather specific: I hate paper covers for hardbacks why not make the book cover the actual cover as they do in many countries? And finally it makes me unreasonably upset that the amount of printed books is not provided, you can pick nearly any Ukrainian book and it will be right there. Why is it such a big secret?
I don't care how other people store their books but I would just say ordering books by color is rather stupid (but very pretty!), I know because I've tried multiple times, it works only if you have a very small library or treat books as decorations, for actual reading it's a disaster.
Hard pass on dogearing pages on my end but I like annotating 😊
the newest book by samantha shannon is one of those huge non-standard size ones and of course it doesnt match the first book in the series which was normal sized and even though i have no interest in reading either of those books it makes me irrationally angry every time i see them in the store.
i very often get rid of the paper covers for hardbacks. i for sure do not read with them still on the book, thats the devil i guess.
i had no idea that there was even an option to see how many books have been printed. that would actually be so cool??
rainbow shelves look incredible but ive never even attempted because i think i would lose my mind.
i hope non of my hand-me-downs to you had dog ears hahaha oops! reminder for future me to un-dogear those pages
I prefer hardbacks, particularly as I want to read the next book by my favourite authors, or it is a subject that interests or intrigues me. I hate stickers and movie covers. I am in the UK and buy my books from independent booksellers, rather than the likes of Amazon.
Sometimes hardbacks can be very lovely! Stickers are just the worst. I haven't bought from Amazon in many years, but I still end up with stickers haha. The curse!
Movie covers… 👎😫 A friend gave me Killers of the Flower Moon and it had Leo on the cover…. 🙄
I refuse to buy a movie covered book! I love Leo, but just NO!
this sounds like a nightmare! we need to do away with these
the silent protest, we all need to join in honestly.
@@MyHumbleNest I always think it is an insult to the author, as if it is saying the only way to sell the book is having the movie cover. Annoying to say the least.
😊
I am one of those people who absolutely hate deckled edges hahaha
I knew you'd be out there! hahah
