    My little local grocery store has Borden's cheese on sale every 4 weeks for 3/$5.00. it's been this way for about 5 years now. That's a good stock up time. They were changing their store brand last month and I got 1 lb packs of butter (in date) for 1.00, I stocked up, they were Best Choice but I don't care because butter is butter to me. They had salted and unsalted.

    You are smart beyond your years! My Mom tried to make me understand the concept of stocking up (specifically when things were on sale) when I was first married. I was a very young wife and mom and thought I knew better, lol. 27ish years later, 3 kids, job changes, moves, a pandemic, you name it I have learned and could easily feed my family for an extended period of time fairly well. Thank you for your tips, help, and recipes. You seem like a genuine “real” person and I really appreciate that.

    One of our favorite (unhealthy but delicious) budget meals is extreme tater tots. It’s literally baked tater tots, a can of chili warmed up, shredded cheese, diced onions, jalapeño slices from a jar and drizzled with ranch. We love it so much, it’s so filling and it’s super tasty. It’s a movie night dinner for us so it’s definitely not an every week dinner but we do it about once a month when we do a family movie night. Sometimes we add a pack of hot dogs and have some grilled hot dogs on the side (or chili dogs). It’s a great meal to make when my son has friends over because what teenage boy doesn’t love junk food and what momma doesn’t love an easy meal to feed them quickly and cheaply?

    Here's lazy man shepherd pie.. I use the regular frozen meatballs ( you could add mushrooms or mix veg) and cover them with mash potatoes and cheese and bake... I sauteed onions and peppers but you don't have to... It's really good

    I get a bag of onions and chop them myself and freeze them. They taste so much better than the frozen chopped onion in the freezer section. I do this with my celery and bell peppers too. We pretty much only eat chicken and ground beef anymore. We stretch meals with potatoes, pasta, or rice. I buy a lot of store brands. I prefer frozen vegetables rather than canned. I don’t buy snack foods except for my mother-in-law, who lives with us and is 90 yo. She loves the deli cookies and apple fritters. If my husband and I need a snack, we eat leftovers. One cheap go to meal around here is macaroni and cheese with small dices of ham.

    John Morrell is owned by Smithfield Foods if you have heard of them. I am gonna look for that smoked sausage & try it.
    If you don't have much room in your freezer & buy ground beef in 3 lb pks, divide into 3 put in ziploc freezer bag & smush it down flat, you can fit a lot more lbs that way. I have plenty of room but my daughter just has her 1 freezer, I think she sets them on end as well.
    Our stores have been out of a lot of things as well, I buy what I can find.
    I wanna mention, when you buy a bigger size of something thinking it will be cheaper, l Iike family size, that isn't always true. It used to be but companies will sometimes make the larger one more expensive per ounce than smaller! Always check the ounce size, I never noticed that until a few yrs ago, it used to be if you bought bigger size it was cheaper per ounce/lb but not anymore which is bull because you have to spend more time comparing but just thought I would mention that. Last time I went to store, some things were cheaper if bigger & some things the smaller was cheaper.
    Love your videos, you always keep it real.

    Large individual onions were 92 cents per pound which 3 lbs of those would be 2.76. 3 pounds of smaller bagged onions were 2.84. Larger onions were actually cheaper.

    • @SouthernWifeEverydayLife
      @SouthernWifeEverydayLife  2 года назад +1

      Most people and recipes call for whole onions not by lbs. So in this case you will get more meals out of a bag of onions which does make it cheaper. Not everything can be figured as per weight.

    I saw a video you did 8 or 10 weeks ago... 5 $ or 10 $ isnt a lot... I really didnt think it would really help stock up... But wow it did .. If i see something on sell we eat I'll buy a bit more .. A store had a case of veggie for 3 dollars ... 12 cans in a case... That week i got corn. Peas .. Green beens and mixed veggies... So i went 2 $ over my max.. Lol but well worth it .. Any buy one get one free... Only stuff we use... I buy... Use one.. Put other in my stock.... With my husband working in the log woods... I stock,up for rainy days.. It rains alot.., he cant work... I'm a sub at a school.. I dont work when school is out for the summer... And huricain season.... Its best to start now to have at least worth of can goods on hand for your family... And extra water... If you wait until you are under a hericain watch to run out to get food and water... Trust me that isn't fun ... Aldi has great prices as well... Best tip is... Only buy what your family will eat... It's not a great deal if no-one will eat lol

    You can freeze your left over pasta water and use in soups. Also, when I have a recipe that calls for corn, green beans or tomatoes drained, I put that in a container.

    • @karendionne1029

      Joan, every Sunday I fill a pot with four quarts of water and boil it . I put in a dozen eggs. When done I take them out leaving all of the water that is still boiling. I put in a bag of egg noodles. When done I scoop them out and into the boiling water goes a pound of pasta . When done it goes in two separate containers. One with sauce and one plain. The plain will become lo mien . After I scoop out the pasta I put two cups of the water into the Instant Pot with potatoes. When that’s done I scoop out the potatoes and once cooled I chop them and put them back in the pot. Then I add creamed corn and whole kernel corn , cream of celery soup and onions and simmer it . I then jar up the pasta water to use as a thickener for the sauce for the lo mien. I live alone so I choose to do all my cooking on Sunday afternoon for the week. Monday is No meat Monday so the corn chowder is perfect . Taco Tuesday . No carbs Wednesday calls for a humongous salad which was prepared Sunday. Thursday I use what is left of the taco filling in a jar of sauce over pasta . ( it is a little dry without added sauce). Friday I put chicken in the corn chowder for lunch and make lo mien for a side dish with roasted chicken. Saturday all left overs are eaten , grocery shopping gets done for Sunday . Best part is only having to deep clean the kitchen on Sunday.

    I have found that if I count the items in a bag, they fluctuate so much! Maybe for your 3 # bag you will get 7 onions, but maybe 9! This makes a difference in the servings available.

    This was a great video to help people realize they can feed their families on a budget. Also, if you or your family do not have the resources to buy food, check your local food pantry, police stations, or churches to see if they can help or direct you to someone who can. Please don’t go hungry…

      No one should go hungry in this country EVER... Even the homeless people on the West Coast get fed for free everyday if they want it. I just got about 5 days worth of meals with snacks at the dollar tree... For 30$ I've never really bought that much food there before, but I was impressed with myself getting all creative.... 1.00 for a bell pepper is ridiculous... ( For example) .. I have alot of different meals we can eat without getting bored. Also sandwich meat...

    Yes I've tried that brand and think is better then the brand name polish sausage. But I use it in my fried cabbage and potatoes or crock pot green beans & potatoes. And can stretch out 4 meals for one person. Plus a sandwich. It not as greasy as the brand name. And I've just tried armor brand hot dogs and polish sausage from dollar General $1.50 hot dogs and $1.25 12 oz. But I don't eat a lot of meat more rice and beans and lentils. But on the fresh veggies it best too grown your own and can and freeze or dehydrate . I've been blessed this year with tomatoes that have come up from last year. Over 20 some plants. And that's a lot off of garden budget. I buy a while Turkey once a year too last all year and make bone broth with gives me and extra 2months of meals or more. I love turkey pot pies and tuna pot pies. I've been using Tupperware hand pie LG.& sm. Sizes. And once a month make breaded tenderloins & chicken tenders. It just takes a few beaten eggs and cracker mill. Flash freeze for pennies verses store bought.

    I try to understand how stocking up your pantry helps save money but I struggle with it. If you use something from the pantry, you have to replace it... how is that saving money? you then have to go out and buy the item again to store which makes you spend more money because now you have to replace it,, I have a strict budget of $35 a week for 2 people and it is a struggle and getting worse with price increases.. I wish I understood how to do this so it benefits me but I can't seem to understand how it saves money,, you use an item, you replace it, which is spending money plus the money you already need to buy the groceries you need for the week. I am not trying to be a brat, but I honestly just can't get myself to understand how it saves money. The price of meat now is almost impossible to stock up on for people like me on an extreme budget..I need to go back and watch your prepper pantry videos again.

      It’s not about saving money as you are building it. It’s having stock put back for your family incase of an emergency. Yes, you are still paying for that item. Unless you get it on sale you are still paying full price for it, but you have it put back. If you buy and eat one can of corn each week. Buy two. Use one put back the other one. Do that each week with a item and that’s how you start growing your prepper pantry. If you can’t afford $5 each week like I share in my videos do it by item. I have a working prepper pantry so I use and replace when needed or went I have the funds too. If we needed to have a no spend week I have stock I can use to feed my family and I would replace those items little at a time as I had the funds too. You are so right about prices going up! So imagine a month or 2 months from now how they are going to be! A year from now?! It’s only getting worse. If you have stock you can use it as needed according to your meal plan and only use your $35 budget for fresh foods, dairy, meats, etc. You can’t look at starting a prepper pantry as saving money. It’s about building stock and food security for your family. The saving money part comes after. Because when you have 12 cans of corn stocked you won’t need to buy it that week for your grocery haul when all you can afford is the fresh foods. Having a prepper pantry is having food security for your family. Even with just two of you. What happens in an emergency, job loss, grocery stores are empty, etc. How long can your family go with only the food you have right now.

    So, in price, buying frozen meats vs. Fresh is cheaper?? I see alot of budget meals with frozen meats, I usually grab the fresh in bulk and freeze for later. I'm still trying to get a grip on prices per ounces. Also, a good budget meal is mac and cheese, with any kind of meat, leftover or whatever, with a can of cream of any kind, any kind of veggies you can budget in (or even a can of any type tomatoes), alittle cheese (optional) is great thrown in a casserole, stove top cooked. One of the BEST southern snack or appetizer I've found is a block of cream cheese with any kind of jelly over the top (preferably hot jelly) with crackers, delicious!

    • @SouthernWifeEverydayLife
      @SouthernWifeEverydayLife  2 года назад +1

      Bulk is always going to be cheaper, but these videos are for people that can’t afford to buy 3+ lbs (ground beef) at a time or the big family packs of chicken. So yes, frozen meats are cheaper unless you find it on clearance or on sale. And prices are going to very depending on your area. I can go get a 6 pack for fresh chicken breast for $10-$13 or buy a frozen bag of 5-6 breast for $6-$8.

      @@SouthernWifeEverydayLife That's something I never considered, I'm definitely going to check out frozen meats vs. fresh from now on!! I had no idea! For chicken I don’t buy it by weight. I buy it by breast or thigh, etc. For example: 3 of us eating that night, so I’ll need 3 breast unless I want leftovers.

    • @SouthernWifeEverydayLife
      @SouthernWifeEverydayLife  2 года назад +1

      And the “fresh” meat that’s come in the stores is actually frozen. They thaw it, label it and put it out. So we are actually refreezing it once we get it home and divide it up. My husband worked as a butcher in a grocery store when he was younger and everything comes in frozen. Like the chicken and beef. Welcome to my channel!! 😍

      @@SouthernWifeEverydayLife I deal with "picky eaters that only like chicken breast", news flash, unless they're buying, it's whatever I can afford, eat it anyway! 😂 I've also found that chicken thighs are almost as high as breasts, even the wings, it's ridiculous! I need to partner up with a chicken farmer, along with a pork and beef seller! Ugh, prices haven't even hit the top dollar yet!! Oh, Good Lord, I didn't even know THAT! Thank You! I guess I keep freezing meats and not gotten sick yet, geeezz!!
