- Mansaf is the ultimate Jordanian food you should try: migrationology....
Considered the national dish of Jordan, and a dish that nearly every Jordanian loves, you are bound to taste Jordan with every bite of mansaf you taste. This was my first time to ever try mansaf, and I was so happy and excited, it was incredible.
What is mansaf (منسف)?
Mansaf (منسف) is a Jordanian food that consists of three main things: rice, lamb, and jameed. The rice is often cooked with turmeric to give it a yellow color, and the lamb is cooked in jameed, and then more jameed is served on the side as a sauce for the rice and lamb. Finally, the lamb and rice is topped with a handful of fried nuts, either pine nuts or sliced almonds, and the full meal is then served with a variety of fresh vegetables like onions and arugula.
What is jameed (جميد)?
Jameed is a type of goat yoghurt that is dried and fermented and made into a hard ball shape. It’s traditionally prepared by Bedouins in the desert who preserve the goat milk by making it into jameed so that it lasts for a long time and can be used slowly. If you visit a Bedouin tent or village, you’ll often see balls of jameed resting on the roof of the tent, drying in the hot sun. For mansaf, the jameed is re-hydrated and made into a sauce, and it gives the unique signature taste and richness of the dish. I had my first taste of jameed, and it was amazing. You can really taste the goat and taste the pastures and grass and shrubs that the goats have eaten in every bite. It definitely has a bit of a meaty taste to eat.
Along with mansaf being an incredibly delicious food, one of the great things about it are all the traditions and customs that come along with eating it. It’s a typical food to eat at Jordanian festivals and celebrations. The mansaf is served on a big tray, and everyone stands around the tray, taking bites with their right hand. You pick up some rice with lamb, and douse it in jameed, then roll it into a ball shape in your palm, making sure there’s some lamb in the middle of the rice and that the entire mansaf ball is held together with jameed. One you have a ball ready, you drop it into your mouth, making sure you don’t touch your lips so that you don’t contaminate your fingers - then you repeat again. Once you are finished eating, you can then lick your fingers clean, and it’s acceptable, that’s pretty cool!
Tawaheen Al Tawa Restaurant - To eat mansaf in Amman, Jordan, we went to one of the most famous restaurants in the city, Tawaheen Al Tawa, a huge restaurant institution in Jordan. The restaurant serves all sorts of delicious Jordanian and Arabic foods, and they especially specialize in mansaf and bbq meats - we had the mansaf. Our tray came out, a pile of rice topped with a heap of lamb, and side bowls of jameed. The combination of the dish, and the method of eating it, made it one of the most memorable meals I ate when I was in Jordan. Price - About 10 - 15 JD ($14.06 - $21.09) per person

To all looking for a great vacation spot, go to Jordan. Beautiful country with the most hospitable people. Beautiful scenery and plenty to see. Very tourist freindly and well priced. Safe and clean is very important for me, so Jordan is perfect. Food is amazing. Everyone speaks English also.
Adam David 🤠
I found them to be incredibly nice and hospitable . What nationality are you?

glad that you were in my beautiful country :)
and for people who were asking about eating mansaf by their hands, I'd like to say that it is only traditional habit, so it is not must to eat it by the hands, and actually only some of men and elderly people like to eat it in their hands and the ladies prefer to eat it by spoon :D
btw eating by hands has health benefits
Thank you +Mark Wiens for this beautiful serious in Jordan and kind regards:)
Handling/touching/holding food with your fingers releases digestive juices and enzymes, that helps your body!
jaeger233 you are such an idiot!!! not touching the mouth is for an obvious reason, but clearly u r way dumb n have no common sense to figure it out!!! but ill explain n i hope ur ant size brain will comprehend: there is saliva in ur mouth, and since this is a group meal and people eat in the same dish, its good not to bring back saliva to the dish! and please stay in Finland dont u ever leave ;)

the BEST food is always at common peoples houses, the true culture is always there
Wow! What a feast! Food! The universal language! Jordan is beautiful, especially the spa! The people seem so warm and reserved. You are blessed to be invited to the family home. Such hospitality!
Always best when invited to someone's house and eat like they do. That's the best experience I had on all my travels. . You and Ying are so lucky.
+K Noeth Definitely, thank you.
you the only guy i clicked that bell for great job man keep it up food united people.
Wow! You're whole Jordanian series has been very interesting and really enjoyable. I do have to atop watching your vids late in the evening though as i always end up going to bed very hungry! I'm going to find some local Jordanian restaurants in London next week....i have try this cuisine for myself. Thanks Mark.
Eating food with your hand has a great value, to feel the food, appreciate it and cherish this gift and blessing from God. it will bring you closer to ground and be humble, to remember you are part of this planet and not to be arrogant because you are intelligent human species. Sharing food with your guest on the same dish and feeding him is a gesture of trust, friendship and love. These are the Arabic values.
I think this is the healthiest and the most delicious food
best series ever
I hope you do Jordan part 2 this year in the summer !!
Satiety (feeling full and satisfied), does not only depend on amount of food that passes your throat..
But also on the satisfaction from good taste working on mouth and tongue receptors, and the skin receptors in the hand, from food touching..
This is why eating with hands is more satisfying.
This is scientific physiological fact.
I would go to Jordan just to see that tour guide, he was gorgeous. I would love to visit Jordan, looks like an amazing place, I would love to go to most places I watch Mark visit. I love watching them get so involved in other people's culture and the way they live. I think that is what is special about these uploads, it's not just showing you food and different parts of the world it is showing you culture and more often food and culture are interwoven.
This made me happy cuz I'm from Jordan
the array of technically cooked and nutritious meals really fired my appetite for Jordanian up! the national dish of Jordan is really something proud of.
Love how Mark can say his yoghurt drink smells like goat and smile about it. Thats why I watch your videos man!
Mark weins you are one special youtuber how at the end of the video you thank every individual who fed you and treated you.. thats one attribute of yours what attracted me to ur video
Hahaha so many people getting butthurt over Mark eating with his hands. Say whatever you want but sometimes eating with your hands is fun af.
I visited Jordan in 2005 and had a wonderful time. Can't say I like mansaf that much, but I was very grateful to be invited to our friends' home and try this famous dish! Fortunately as a woman I was not expected to attempt the barehanded eating--I think that would have been a disaster! Love this video series--I want to go back!
you are welcome
YESSS!!!! Ive been waiting for a mansaf video from your jordan travels... and its finally HERE!!! I really want to make a big batch of it right now and eat it with my hands looool
+Radi0Crazy Thanks!
If i find myself on death row my final meal request will be mansaf
Your smile and positivity makes my day, thank you!
im from jordan ,some people ball the rice up , but my family use spoon , much better , balling up rice is traditional , however i prefer spoon
nice video btw
Some people on this earth are cursed, they will never understood the nature and they will never knows the greatness of nature, they will remain cursed ,and......
In Mauritania it’s the same, sometimes they use a spoon or they ball it up, personally balling it has a different feel and taste to it that makes it better
I’m from Jordan too btw I hate when they use spoons
btw you dont know what your missing, at the same time you CANT eat mansaf with a spoon thats so offensive to mansaf
I am jordanian and I prefer eat mansaf with spoon , I feel it is more relaxing specially when you eat in a restaurant .
Thank you so much for your very informative vlog!!! You and Ying are one fortunate couple because of all the places you have been!
You went to Hashims! Your hitting all the right places. FYI even if I've recently eaten, every time I watch one of your Jordan videos I got hungry! All this to say great videos and thank you for showing my Jordan and reminding me how much I miss being back there with family!
+Khaled Saket Thank you Khaled!
Khaled Saket my name is hashim lel
I am a Jordanian in Seattle, if you are every near by come over for a mansaf meal! I love mansaf
I'm not a meat eater but that Mansaf looked so good.
Ok. my next stop shall be Jordan. Every food looks so delicious. Btw, fade's blue eyes always capturing.
I like how there's always a lot of fruits+nuts served. I almost never eat healthy; but that combo sounds v cool. I bet that's how royalty ate back in the day..lots of fruits & nuts.
Eating together with hands, single center platter and licking your fingers afterwards....... Perfect Arab way, full of blessings.
Certainly one of the most interesting travelogue I've seen in a while. Would have never thought Jordan to be so beautiful, and the food looks absolutely amazing. I doubt very seriously if I could find Jordanian food here in San Francisco to match the level of preparation you're having.
+Anthony White Thank you Anthony
Mark, your enthusiasm and manner create great videos. I am continuing to watch all your videos because they are “feel good” videos in this time of COVID-19TRACKER-19. Thank you.
and the musics for this trip also giving some new dimensions , very nice selection...
+Ritankar Sasmal Thanks!
I would like to shed some light on some of the info said in this video about Mansaf. Most Jordanian nowadays cook Mansaf at home once a week particularly on Friday. They usually cook it using cow yogurt , and occasionally using lamb yogurt, and rarely goat yogurt. This is due to availability and price. Many Jordanians nowadays mix yogurt with a small portion of liquid Jameed manufactured by many companies and can be found in almost all grocery stores. One popular manufacturer for liquid Jameed is Al-Kaseeh. At home, most Jordanian eat Mansaf by a spoon. Only in big occasions, like weddings, Mansaf is eaten by hands which must be washed thoroughly before eating.
I'm loving these Jordan videos Mark!
+KingNothing Thanks!
Where's your crown King Nothing?
The food looks so good, I can't believe how many places you have been to so far
Your Jordanian trip has been an excellent introduction to me of the regional foods of the area. Most of us westerners had no idea of what the food would be like and I have watched, fascinated as you devoured it all. It is very interesting to see an Asians view of this food. Well done Mark. What's next?😋
+Colin Hirons Thank you Colin, I also learned so much during this trip. Right now in Korea, but will probably post some Indonesia videos first.
I'm living in Jordanian family now...I taste all the traditional food Mark and I love it!you make me craving again..hahaha
I love eating with my bare hands, especially my Indian food. This is how I would eat my biryani with raita and raw onions!!! Yum 👅
Just when I was wondering if you have had Mansif, it popped up in my recommended videos.
Mansif is one of my personal favorites
Mansaf is Jordan's signature dish, one day I must try this!!!!
+TheSpritz0 Hope you can try it, it's an outstanding dish.
TheSpritz0 I hope you tried it
I was born in Amman Jordan in 1941 and my ancestors are all Jordanians, born and raised east of the river in the city of Salt. They eat mansaf by hand as described. That was because of necessity because people of the desert don’t carry spoons or they did not have enough for every one. They then followed the Bedouin habits and started calling it a tradition. I personally never ate my favorite dish with my hand but almost every one around me did. To every one his or her choice. I don’t consider eating with one’s hand is essential to enjoy that beautiful dish.
That waiter's side-eye at 10:56 is strong! Great video as always Mark!
Yes I miss mansaf so much, when I was in Jordan I used to eat it and hummus
It’s not hard to make it’s one of those meals you can cook from home just go to your local Arabic store and get Jameed and all you need is rice and lamb or chicken
😭 that looks way too delicious!!! I don't think I would be able to do the whole process of making it into a ball before eating. I'd probably fail epically.
Yaisha Diaz u dont need to make ball, you can eat it using spoon, the point is to eat mansaf 😎
Don't worry, even native jordanians such as myself don't know how to do it properly. :p
Yaisha Diaz so sweet
Yaisha Diaz i from Jordan and I life in Jordan I ate the mansaf I love it
Yaisha Diaz
You have to try it in Jordan mainly in Karak the original place of this dish .
😋😋😋😋
Just shows how do much alike cultures are in their differences! So many cultures have the hand eating/sharing communal style. Those that scorn forget that these people tend to be a whole lot healthier than most in the world.
Fahdi's got the Mark Wiens foodgasm face too! Amazing! Haha!
+Brian Kiddo double the foodgasm!
+Praveen Nair dude you're subscribed to Mark Weins too? XD
Ahmad Luqman hahaha sup man :)
+Praveen Nair +Ahmad Luqman Glad to be a part of your reunion. Haha!
+MC Win The food is sexy! Whatchu talking about? Hahaha
The jameed thing is called quroot in afghanistan we have a variety of those here made from different kinds of yogurt and sour cream and when you turn it into liquide with some hot water and eat it with rice (mansaf, maqluba, biryani... etc) its just to die for it's so delicious
At the risk of getting hammered for saying this. You don't need to eat Mansaf with your bare hands.
Sorry folks, but I've always refused to get peer pressured or bullied into eating any rice dish with my bare hands.
I am from the region, and this whole argument that Mansaf could only be enjoyed eaten this way is a sad fable.
It's pure macho b.s. culture.
Rest assured there is no shame in using cutlery, it does not diminish one's manliness nor does it offend your hosts.
Don't let anyone out there tell you otherwise. Period.
+Erb Stank Thanks Erb!
+Samer Madanat you need to go to a corner, calm down and stop being a bigot
Fadhil Sopyan nobody asked for your comment
***** i agree that eating like the locals will give a more fulfilling experience
+Sam
I'm willing to bet your own parents do not eat Mansaf with their hands, the reemergence of eating certain rice dishes barehanded started only a few years ago.
Every culture in the universe has moved on from once eating with their bare hands to using cutlery or chopsticks or what have you thanks to the industrial revolution and the ability to mass produce cutlery at low cost for consumers.
It's only in the Middle East and for the last thirty years or so under the influence of some religious nutbags bankrolled by our southern neighbors that we are moving full steam backwards, justifying the resurgence of eating rice like neanderthals with unfounded religious b.s stories.
Even apes and chimps break branches off of treas and create tools to eat with.
Mohammad the prophet of Islam was obsessed with hygiene and cleanliness, if the availability of cutlery was wide spread back then, he'd be the first to incorporate it into his eating habits.
Get over yourself man, you prefer eating rice with your hands, good for you, no one is judging you, but don't expect others to buy into the fantasy that eating rice barehanded is a cultural norm, it might be for those stuck in the stone ages or too intimidated to use cutlery.
thank you for your videos about jordan ...so proud of my country
This is my favorite dish my mother makes. I always eat so much of it I cant move for hrs.
