I watched this video because I have never worked with a water softener and a family member has one and needed my help.
I watched 4 or 5 of these this morning to get a feel for it. This was the best and that includes watching a This Old House and two professionals.

Great vid! The diagram was super helpful in the beginning. It definitely makes it clear to me that my job will be a bit more labor intensive. The copper plumbing that was done in my home is not set up for this. Thankfully, my dad taught me how to solder copper and do my own plumbing.

Nice video! Jumping in here a bit late to the game but thought I'd add my 2c for what it's worth. A year ago our existing water softener quit. After lots of homework, I selected the Aquasure Harmony 64,000 grain model. As you found, I was not happy with the existing plumbing so, again, after lots of homework, I decided on PEX A, as opposed to the PEX B you used here.
I like the fact that PEX A connectors have a larger inside diameter than the PEX B so there is much less restriction at the connectors. I bought the manual tool and I'm glad I had my strong grandson to help with that. (If I do anymore work with PEXA, I will definitely buy the electric tool.) The Aquasure kit came with their whole house filter so I installed that too. I added an extra circuit above the filter for a bypass so if I need to isolate the filter, for changing twice a year, or other maintenance, I don't have to turn off the water to the house.
One issue with many cities, they do not allow any filtering or softening of the line to the kitchen. That line runs right from the street to the kitchen. That's another stupid law from our glorious benefactors. So you won't see, or taste anything different at the kitchen faucet. Perhaps it's not that way in your city. I'd upload some pics of my install, but YT frowns on that so text will have to do. There are lots of videos with the filter/bypass circuit. That's where I learned about it. Again, nice job!!

Just installed this same softener in my house replacing and old culligan unit that was no longer working properly. So far I'm impressed. I did the 64,000 resin model since we have a big family and use quite a bit of water. Great job this really is a simple unit to install imo.

Subscribed to your feed. Great video, to the point and funny at times. You dont waste time and you speed through the parts that were nonconsequential. At one point, you reintegrated an acccess point valve into the system. If you have issues with hard water, you can get chemicals that can help clean your lines but you need an access point to inject them. There are also several other reasons why having this option would be helpful such as a purge line so that you dont have to hold a bucket. Just kill the inbound side and run the hose outside and go crack a beer while ya wait and dont have a mess on your hands. Either way, solid video and helpful. Thanks!

What about a house Water filter before the softener did you consider that as well? Maybe that’s more for me to consider as I’m considering a property that’s on a well. I’ve always been on city water but was told I’d need a water softener if I buy this new build on a well
I personally didn't consider that because I'm on city water, but I have seen others install them that way.

Did you connect it to the both the hot water and cold water line? I know some places only hook the water softener to the hot water line. If yours is connected to the cold water line do you notice a different taste in the water?
It connects to the water line before the water has reached the hot water heater. That way all the water flowing into the hot water heater is softened. I usually drink bottled water so I can't really comment on taste.
Did those female connectors come with the water softener? I am having trouble locating the correct fittings so I can install with PEX lines as you did. Thanks in advance.
I had to buy those separately. I found them at Menards.

No I haven't. I did buy a test kit after this but haven't used it yet. I could probably test my kitchen tap and use another to test my outdoor water spigots that aren't softened.

what about when the exhaust from the heater gets hot n melts ya water lines 😕
I installed the same Harmony series. 32k grain with fine mesh. Works great like yours but I have ask, Did you find it strange that the unit head has 1 inch diameter inlet and outlets? Most other softeners I've noticed are 3/4 inch. No big deal but it made it somewhat difficult to find the 1 inch connection components.
so when did you start balding, once you started showering with hard water? I feel there is a direct connection

Correct, the exterior hose valves should have regular water with hard minerals, not softened water.

Did it make a difference in the quality of your water? I have a very old unit that I’m looking to replace. My water turns everything yellow in my house. Hoping a new unit like this helps. Thank you
Yes it definitely made an impact. Showering gives that "slimy" feeling because the water doesn't have all those hard minerals in it anymore. I quickly got used to it though to the point where now I wonder if it is still working lol

I have resin from coming through and clogging my pipes for the past few times . Please help tried everything
If you have resin coming out of the tank and into the lines then it sounds like a defective unit. If you just bought it, try to return/exchange it.
Hey I got a question I just put mine on but I still don’t program it But I tried to open the kitchen water and I wasn’t running water from there did you think I have to program the water softener first?
Your bypass valve probably needs to be turned. You can use the bypass valve to divert water around the softener without using it and then turn your water on.

John, In some videos for this model I see people after putting salt in pre-filling the tank with up to 5gallons of water. Is that something you did? The builder quality unit I have is failing & I’m being quoted 2500$ to replace it.
Yes I believe I did if I remember right. I've had some problems with "salt bridges" which is basically the salt solidifies at the bottom and then won't allow any more salt in during regeneration. I fix this by tipping the salt tank sideways and carefully emptying as much water into my sump as possible to get rid of the water (and keeping the salt). Then pour a few gallons of hot water in and let sit for 15 or 20 mins. Then run a regeneration cycle. Hope that helps you.

It's been long enough now that I can't remember but I'm guessing not since I had the leak problem.
A year later, are you still pleased with your decision to go with an Aquasure? I'm looking at an Aquasure Harmony 64k.
Yes I am still pleased with it. The only problem I have had is with what I can only figure to be salt bridges. I think that problem is gone now so everything has been working well. But I think the only way to truly avoid that is to buy a salt-less softener.
@@renovateyourmind Gotcha. Thanks for the reply! Regarding the bridges, do you keep the brine tank full of salt? Or run it with a bag or two at a time?
@@drewhayes2192 From what I have read, you fill it initially but don't put any more in until you're on empty. If you add more halfway through, it can compact the salt already there and cause a salt bridge.
Overall how did you like this softener ... looking to buy same one but you didn't so sure if this unit legit ....thanks
I like it. I guess once the softener is installed that becomes a pretty polarized answer because it either works or it doesn't. This one works and has the right capacity. I over-estimated for resale purposes. Plus I think the unit looks sharp with the black coloring and the LCD screen.
You didn’t add the resin to the column tube??
The resin tank is prefilled.
Where did you get crimp pliers?
If you mean for the crimp rings, I bought them from Menards.
How you bypass the system in case something happens?
There are a couple quarter-turn valves on the back that you can turn by hand to bypass the system.
Very helpful. Does that bypass valve allow you to run unsoftened water to the house? I ask because my outdoor hoses are on my main water line so I'd like the option to bypass the water softener now and then. Thanks!
Yes you can switch it over to bypass the softener when you want to and still have water in the house.
@@renovateyourmind Hi, I finally got around to installing mine. The amount of torque needed to tighten the 1 inch to pex connection is absurd. Even with zero tape I can't tighten it all the way down. My first attempt using 5 wraps leaked, a lot. I think I have to try closer to the 12 turns or try a different fitting, maybe something with a gasket.
