Diablo 1 is more of a classic roguelike game. It scratches a totally different itch than the other games, even if Diablo II still feels like it shares a lot of the same DNA. Shrines can have permanent negative effects on your character, and it really feels like a lot of your game is determined by RNG. You can't get enemies to respawn, either - no grinding your way through challenges. Even the quests you get in D1 are based on RNG; you have to play through the game multiple times to see everything. In D2, you can just quit and join a different server if you don't like the maps, and you basically get unlimited "rolls" for any of the RNG elements. No permanent negative repercussions. That works better for a game designed to be more of an online experience like D2 turned out to be; you traded to get the best gear for your build, in most cases. It's just fundamentally different from D1.
the style of permanent word is better, D1 feels more real. D2 is great thow, just need permanent world that only refresh after killing baal, would have been huge
you can do 'create new game' to generate/re-generate the entire game/dungeon, if you get stuck and/or need to do whatever (gold, equipment, spells/spell-books, etc etc etc) farming (but your character, your clvl, stats, spells and slvls, equipped equipment, and inventory are all saved / preserved, but anything on the ground is obviously lost, as the entire, game / dungeon, gets generated/regenerated when you do 'create a new game'), but otherwise, a single run/playthrough in SP/offline, is static (the entire game/dungeon is regenerated at its creation, so there's really no RNG at all (sorry, no save-load scumming for different drops within the dungeon and/or from its monsters), aside from a bit with the shops, but you also got to know the ways that each shop-npc can get new/re-rolled wares)
In my opinion the atmosphere in D1 is just perfect. The music, the feeling of threat its just so cool. I think it is one of the reasons why I was a bit disapointed when I first played D2 when it came out. Later I learned to love D2 (especially with D2R). But when I watched this video the I still see why I loved D1 so much. Today it seems clunky and old fashioned. But the atmosphere and overall feeling of D1 is still unmatched.
Also i remember years and years ago i came across the best sword in the game. It was called sword of haste and it was a claymore. It was so fast that big D couldnt recover fast enough to do anything before the next swing. It was the coolest thing. If you find this sword....its a MUST buy
Hey Phil thanks for playing this. It remains one of my favorite RPG games. Just a hint on the shrines: Fascinating, Ornate, and Sacred shrines all cost permanent and direct reduction of your max mana points (without reducing your magic attribute). And since there's no way in this game that can permanently increase your max mana directly, this is considered irreversible damage to your character. Avoid these shrines especially at high levels.
permanent negative effects: ----------- 1. permanent loss of your MAX life: the "black deaths" (the golden/yellow zombies that can spawn on dlvls 3-5), when they physically hit you, they remove -1 to your MAX life each time, so obviously you never want to get hit by them: kill from afar (bow or spells) and be careful going through doorways and/or around corners, and/or the shadows/"fog-of-war"/darkness-levels too if you move-walk too quickly or non-cautiously, lol, or, you can always immediately quit out of the game if you see them, and 'create a new game', keep doing so, until they're not spawned on dlvls 3-5, to be the most safe ------------ 2. permanent loss of your MAX mana: the bad shrines (bad shrine effects) // notice how they are all "good/holy-ish" words... lol 1. Ornate 2. Sacred 3. fascinating the random shrine effects (possibly bad shrine effects): // if it is a SP/offline game/character, you CAN save first, and then see what shrine effect you get, loading the game, if it's one of the 3 bad shrines (bad shrine effects) 4. goat shrines 5. cauldrons --------------------------- permanent positive effects: the good shrines (good shrine effects) // notice how they're all "bad" words (aside from enchanting), lol 1. creepy (+2 str) 2. abandoned (+2 dex) 3. eerie (+2 mag) 4. quiet (+2 vit) 5. enchanting (+1 slvls to all spells that you know, but one spell that you know, is randomly chosen to get -1 slvl, though if it had the max slvl of 15, then it gets a -2 slvl) 6. hidden (roughly: randomly does -10 max durability of 2 or 3 pieces of equipment, but +10 max durability randomly to one piece of equipment, but read up on exactly how it works, as I could be off a bit on how it works, this is mainly for the sorcerer with using the unique 'thinking cap' helm: +1 slvl, as it always starts with only 1 max durability, and also, I'm not sure if it can be used to turn equipment into unbreakable or not, if you keep raising its max durability, not sure if it becomes unbreakable or not, haven't gotten around to testing it or not, meh) there's other "good" shrines ("good" shrine effects) too, but I usually just ignore them, as these are really the only good shrines that really matter
Hi @phil the potions vary per class. Warrior gets more on minor potions due to strenght. Sorcerer get more fromminor mana. There are things you need to finish the game per class. For warrior you can get the griswolds edge at lvl 10 which helps finish the game The sorcerer needs firball The rougue needs long war bow. You may need to collect all drops and sell as much as you can. We you get to lvl 13 you have an option to buyelixir from pepin. Each elixir adds 1 to stat. Sorcerer max magic is 180 Warrior max streght 185 Rougue max dex 165 Save load to change selling items to buy from like books Hope this helps.❤
Something that seems not to be mentioned yet: If you repair the magic items before identifying them, you gain more money. Also you have a skill with which you can repair items for free, but the loose some durability. This can also used for items you plan to sell.
Another Playthrough - you mentioned this - I really wanna see you go again at it! - Sorc for sure is different, and I like the spells and variety! I HOPE YOU DO IT :) - Really loved watching all of this so far.
Comparing this game to games released after it is like comparing the first Potato to french fries. This game is what lead to the many games like it & this was one of the first hit PC games during a period where Console ruled. Back then most people played games on Consoles.
Where is your Arkaine's Valor? You should get it in the catacombs. It is such a great armor. Oh and btw you keep saying "oh my skill level"..for sure you need to get used to it yes, but we all struggle with this game there is nothing wrong with the way you are playing. Keep up the good work my friend! :)
great playthrough Phil. So exiting to watch a "noob" play this epic game :) watching all the way from Denmark in Scandinavia! Hope you do another playthrough on Sorcerer!
diablo1 and 2 are masterpieces, 3, immortal and 4 are toilet trash. The difference between the love of masking good interesting games vs greedy making profit and rehashing the same thing. Corporate greed is scrapping society. For the warrior don't put any points in magic, you will get elixir for that later and using rings with +x to magic / all gives you the ability to read books witch up your mana each read. You can keep the ring on yourself to read the books.
i think 3 is fun the first time but the build variety and reliance on set pieces is what killed the game for me. every class follows the same path and it gets brain numbingly boring after 100hrs
2 is a masterpiece but didn’t like 1 but then I played it over 2 decades after release and 2 I played back in the day. 3 was good for what it was. A completely different feel from 2 though. Haven’t played 4 yet.
@@wertywerrtyson5529 i’m actually playing 4 for the first time since release, D2 is my absolute favorite for good reason but D4 is pretty fun for what it is. i notice some improvements but it’s definitely way more casual. within 2 hours i’m level 43 with full legendary gear. probably won’t get hard either
Fascinating, Ornate and Sacred ("x comes at the cost of wisdom") are always problematic, mainly for Warrior and Sorcerer. Hidden Shrine is a die roll - if your best item loses 10 durability, it won't be worth +10 durability to everything else. Other shrines are pure benefit, just meh, or sort of trickster Shrines, like the one that can cast Phase and put you in a group of monsters.
I dare you to play the Belzebub mod (a.k.a Tchernobog, or Diablo HD mod) with the Rogue. It's so difficult that I couldn't finish it lol. But it's way better than Hellfire. Has more content that makes sense too, you even fight Izual! It has all of the D2 set items as well! Super cool ❤️
I made the fatal error of playing D2 before D1 back in the day. The walk speed is brutal, but it is a great game no doubt. Pardon me if im mistaken but arent you suppose to Dupe Gold at beginning? Lol
for archers you just need to block them in corners or use a bow/spell...but yes its the most annoying thing in this game with the walk sometimes (when there is no ennemies)
I always play this with devilution patch for auto gold pickup and some 2 other quality of life options that i forget at the moment. But i love the simplicity, music and atmosphere of this game.
It's so little though. Runes become useless, the oils only slightly more consistent, the spells are mostly meh, the new item affixes are nice, but not needed, the Monk works better on paper - the Bard is arguably broken, and the Barbarian is just okay, except for not having their own art. It was a really thin kind of fluff expansion.
There is a zombie, greenish/yellow, strongest type....dangerous permantly reduces health.. I got stuck with my warroir vs a boss and lost 2/3 of my health permanently!
D1 what started it All!! Used to Game out 2 players when i was younger on ps1 with a buddy! Hes the Only perskn ive Ever met who had that game its Very Rare!!
I believe they only let us walk in diablo 1 due to the speed of enemies if you could run no need to fight. Side note: if they can run it's game over for almost everyone.
How many times is Phil going to die in D1 while playing through the game? My bet is about 3 times. Unseens can be quite dangerous, obsidian lords are brutal, advocates and succuby are a pain. And the Lord of terror himself can also be hit. Argh...I want to play it, too again now. My Laptop doesn't even have a dvd insert any more. And Phil would have been better off with a monk from hellfire. He has the search spell as an ability to highlight all the items lying on the ground....

Much more of a "play through" game play. Ive been thinking of playing pre-LOD just to feel it out.

Its because diablo 1 was made by passionate people. Today games are created by greedy people

Absorb half trap damage is broken in D1 and reduces all ranged attack damage by half. Always wear at least one piece of jewelry with that on it.
Anyone remember picking up 1 gold and dropping an item on the ground at the same time to dupe it? 😂
amazing game.
Looks so much harder than d2 lol.
