More 'Boring old man' videos please! Cracking to see Chris in a review-style video, informative, genuine and engaging - we definitely need more of this!
This vid has some Harry Metcalfe aura to it, the alternate universe version of Jeremy Clarkson, who is humble, sane and nice but just as passionate bout cars.
I own an 83' Turbo 2 with the 185hp upgrade kit in deep Marine Blue with a standard tan interior and the optional Gotti 150 wheels complete with 285mm rear tires. Produces over 1g of grip and will corner with most modern production cars although not nearly as fast in a straight line. But still, for its time, it was quite the weapon and considered an actual supercar thanks to its longitudinal mounted engine and wild Marcello Gandini styling. (Same designer that did the Countach, Miura and Lancia Stratos) When these cars are set up correctly they are a joy to drive. The shifter (not a cable linkage, sorry Chris), steering and brakes are so direct and the handling is actually much more neutral than many automotive publications of the time claimed. Lift off overseer is not really a big problem with these. I prefer the Turbo 2 to the Turbo 1 because parts availability is better, and I'm not really a fan of the bonkers interior of the Turbo 1. And other than the bespoke aluminum roof and doors of the Turbo 1 there's not much different between the two. They perform identically. Turbo 1's tend to bring right around $135,000 USD while Turbo 2's bring between $67,000 and $95,000 USD depending on color and condition.
My father was in the army and I spent my youth living in Germany in the 80s and ill never forget the day I saw one of these on the autobahn. It looked fucking insane, literally nothing looked like it. The rear wheels seemed monumentally wide compared to the skinny rims that were common place back then. This car was bat shit mental to see in the flesh by a young boy sat in the back of a yellow 3 series with no seatbelt on, because there wasn't one
On a tour of Europe in a volkswagon van with my brother and father, I dragged them to the French Grand Prix at Dijon-Prenois in 1981 and my father was set to hate it but his highlight was the Renault 5 races before the feature, absolutely mental racing!!!! Watching 2 dozen of these getting thrashed around was an absolute riot! Cheers for the memory!
Back in '82, I owned a simple Renault 5. I had a problem where the inlet valve had burned, and it would no longer start. After the Head Removal, I decided to look at the Alloy Head. I did some work on improving the gas flow, on both inlet and exhaust ports, the Head Casting was rough - inside the ports. I slightly enlarged these ports, and polished them. I was truly amazed at the increase in performance from doing this work!. The body on a Renault 5 ensured that "it returned to the ground" after about 2 years of feeling pleased with the small modifications I made to the engine. It doesn't seem to matter which car you drive, you could always try to simply polish the Inlet/exhaust ports, it will be a noticeable improvement in performance, especially on those smaller engines.
When I was a kid, about 15 years old in the early 80's, I saw the ad for this car in the back of a popular car magazine for sale brand new. They were asking $19k for it, and compared to what was available at that time back in the day it was a ROCKET! Was really hoping to have it as my first car but I came from a poor family so that wasn't an option. Had always hoped to see the car in action one day, thanks for making that happen.
Bear in mind that $19k for a supermini in the early 1980s was a LOT of money, especially in the States where there wasn't really a developed market for them.
On Saturday I thought I’d died and gone to heaven following a DB6 Volante for 8 miles out of Henley, then things got even better when a red Renault 5 turbo 1 ripped past in the other direction. Automotive heaven!
My mom almost bought one brand new back in the day, so much regret she didnt, would have loved to drive it around. Edit: might have been the Turbo II though
In high school a mum did that. She and hubby were in real estate, made good money but he was stingy. Anyhow, after much complaining about her old car, he told her she could have any R5 she wanted, expecting her to get the Baccara… Nope, she got a bright red Turbo2 and daily drove it.
I sold the Turbo 2 new in my time at Radbourne Racing Wimbledon. We also raced GT Turbo's and carried out all performance updates available on them. I recall £2000 you could have a T2 converted from LHD to RHD. I also remember once a businessman from Japan ordered 3 Pearl White cars from me to be converted to RHD, fitted with Gotti Wheels and send over to him. One was for himself but the other two where gifts for two of his best friends...Great Days.
I was hoping someone would add a comment about Radbourne of Wimbledon. I used to ride past there as a teenager on by bike, stop and dream about being behind the wheel of the exotic looking little Renault turbo one day. Life was so simple then 😢
When I was 20 (in 1991) one of my friends let me drive around his beat up Turbo 2 while he was at an appointment, asking me to pick him back up 30 minutes later. Still one of the best automotive experiences of my life! Drove the seats of that car D That thing would pull like crazy beyond 3000 RPM like nothing I've experienced before.
I did the Tour Auto many many years ago in a R8 Gordini as a co-pilot, amazing car too! So much good memories from this! I even had a nice talk with Jean Ragnotti who was competing in a A110. Great pilot and great person too!
@@beaudwayful Nice cars and nice memories for sure! 🤩 My dad had a MG-B when I was a kid, that's the first car I remember and I loved it. He had many cars after that, mostly foreign cars. Chris really needs a show on TV called Car Geek, Just something casual on a Sunday evening on BBC 2, just Chris and like minded guests just geeking out on random chats/ test drives and cool roads, almost in the style of a pod cast but on TV. I'd love to watch something like this. Low budget high quality content and conversation 👌
I remember being 5/6 years old and going with my cousin on the top of the engine bay, with his father driving trough Lisbon . It was red and white and my god , it was beautiful ... Til this day , I remember . Good times , no doubt .
I'm always encouraged when a car model I'm interested in, other things too, if there are not many out there for sale, despite a decent number being made, and if there are good sources of spares around; it usually means that (other than a fair number getting written off) the owners are hanging on to them, which usually means they're worth keeping an eye open for when they do come up.
Fabulous little video Chris, need more of these please. I've kinda got a soft spot for this era of R5. I kinda took over my mum's 1.4 GTL after doing silly things in my Mini ;) ;) Going from the Mini to the Renault was sublime, 5 speed box, nice suspension that didn't bounce none stop, brakes and a whole host of other features that Mini's just didn't have. We almost convinced my Mum to chop this in and get the Turbo version but she liked her little black 5 and so the 19year old me was heavily disappointed in 1990.
It was a Turbo 2 in the Bond movie. I used to own a blue Turbo 1 S/N 0012 that was originally owned by Francois Castaign of Renault Sport. 280 HP with 22 lbs of boost. It was scarry fast.
A dream garage car regardless of whether any good imply because they’ve always looked cool since I was a kid in the 80’s Seem one once on the road and I was in awe
The first thing that came to my mind was the red car from "Never Say Never Again". This is just another car we never got to see here in the US. I hope to be able to just see one some day. This has to be one of the coolest French cars ever made. I wonder what Mr Clarkson thinks of these Renault's. Thank you.
These kind of videos are Harris at his best. No editing where it changes camera shot every two seconds like on Top Gear, just Chris talking proper geeky stuff whilst rinsing a car down a winding lane. I miss these vids.
Had 2 First Generation Renault 5's FWD unfortunately but what a wonderful car they were very French very comfortable cheap to run and utterly classless, More Chris Harris Please !
Nice to hear about Jean Ragnotti, here. I hope everybody will follow your advice and go see videos about his feats. great race driver, all about entertaining the fans, on top of that.
Chris Harris is one of just a handful of car reviewers/journalists anywhere in the media, whose opinions are definitive, especially on RUclips. And this is another of his wonderful videos (much better than that TV show...)
Except calling the Mazda MX5 a "Girl's car" and "not a real sports car" which is just mindless macho bollocks. Opinions may differ, yes, but that is just ridiculous...
Some years ago Ragnotti came to Mallorca and took part in the Classic Rally in an Ex-works car. It was a go-kart with a roof, only seen modern rally cars and 911 GT3 corner like that, absolutely mesmerizing
It was a 2. My parents bought my brother and I a Renault 5 le car2 when we passed our driving tests. Scary body roll but never fell over, it did look crap so was given yellow fog lights and some turbo bits. All the mk1 r5's are fabulously cool, from the standard 1400 Alpine n/a to the Turbo2.
I had gotten wind of the R5 in magazines but it wasn't until the Monterey vintage races that I saw one in the flesh. Scores of Ferraris, Lambos (an LM400!), Cobras, and other exotica in attendance, and I thought the little Renault was the coolest car on the property. Thanks Chris.
Finally Chris Harris another genuine genius automobile Master presenter! The late 70's, 80's and 90's sporty hatchbacks on steroids are for sure today's collectibles! To name a few in no particular order: Renault 5 Turbo 1&2, Clio Williams, VW Golf/Rabbit GTI/G60 MK1&2, Mazda 323 Turbo, Toyota Corolla Turbo, Lancia HF Integrale all gens, Peugeot 205 GTI 1.6, 106 Rally, Fiat Uno Turbo, Mini Cooper S, Autobianchi Abarth, Ford XR2i, Escort Cosworth and Honda Civic CRX V-Tec and the Subaru WRX!!! 🔥🔥🔥 Thanks for your great content Chris 🙏💙
I had a R5 "Famous Five" in 2004.... Best car ive ever had. Mate had a modern Cooper s Chili pack, Hilarious races on roundabouts ensued!! He drove to the legal limit, i just drove to the limit and hung on!! :)
My first car was a Renault 5 ..... 'L' ... 1975, complete with umbrella gearstick - a very direct gear change indeed. I'm pleased to note that it had some crossover parts with the Turbo 1 - those door keys in the shape of the Renault emblem!!!!🤣
Thanks mate, really made my day. Yep that Renault 5 Turbo 1 is world heritage. By the way Chris, have you ever been told you look just like Henri Pescarolo?
I just bought a cracking turbo 1 for the chateau in France to go alongside the alpine a110 ,its a well used example at just under 120k miles but it's been well looked after and completely rust free.
I was 12 when I saw first photos of this car in a car magazine in 1979 or 1980. That looked like the craziest car on the earth. Although the rally version was quickly overpowered by newer Group B it was so agile on tarmac in the hands of Mr Jean Ragnotti, it seems it was just dancing on the road.
I would like to make a suggestion to Mr. Lovett regarding the car listing. There are 186 picture but none of them shows the underbody. For a car or that period (and from that manufacturer) it is crucial to understand the state of the chassis (corrosions, signs of accident etc.). I think having a 4 post lift and shoot some pictures from underneath would definitely set the website a part from the other enthusiast-auction websites. Cheers
The fact that Renault made this, and then also made the Clio V6 is applause-worthy... I'm 25 years old and I'd love to drive, or at least ride passenger in, one of these cars... It looks like a car that could have been in Tintin comics, if Tintin was made around the 80's...
Really hope Alpine will build us a 300hp rearwheel drive version of that new electric R5. Already confirmed as a frontwheel drive car, i believe. But they should build a rearwheel drive version too. 🤞🏼
Around 1985 when i was 14 i seen a pearl white Turbo 2 with a red interior parked on a side street off Byres road in Glasgow, probably the most bonkers car i'd seen back then.
I do love that car Chris. I know your a French car lover. A friend had the simple 5GT (1.4T) back in the 80's and it was hoot. Obviously not on par with that monster!! I can see by the body language of the car, that it handles beautifully. Just waiting for the first episode of the new TG series. Thumbs up!!
When you guys are done watching Chris drive this legend, give yourself a treat by watching any Jean Ragnotti driving compilation and get your mind blown at how sideways than man can drive a FWD kit car!
The TriHawk (owned by Harley Davidson now) three wheeler had a Citroen 2CV power plant, and it had R5 Turbo seats that were upholstered with Mercedes limo headliner material. The fabric was bulletproof. I ended up with a pair of these seats in one of my Dodge muscle cars, and they were as weird as they were awesome.
You are a boring old man. But I watch every second of your content and love it. Chris Harris is the PERFECT blend of knowledgeable and entertaining required for productions like this and the best presenter Top Gear has ever had. That magic with Rory Reid and Matt LeBlanc was outstanding. Even better than Clarkson, Hammond and May. Gutted that crew didn’t last longer but at least they didn’t outstay their welcome and age terribly. Long may you make content Chris H.
Miss my 1987 r5gt,I owned one at the same time as pug205 1.9gti both sorted at Gem developments plymouth.both awesome cars.only reason I mention the 205 as I was always torn between the two..
Cars like these are why we need the combustion engine to live on forever. BEVs will almost all be skateboards with a motor per axle or maybe per wheel, while ICEs allow for myriad of differentiation apart from just styling. Front, rear, and mid engine layouts with everything in between, cylinder counts, cylinder bank orientation, valves per cylinder, power cycle, firing order, induction style, the list goes on and on! I want a world where we can still choose from Front engined FWD automatic econoboxes and rear engined RWD manual transaxle hot hatches at least until I die, and I'd like Chris to slide them on camera until then, too, please.
I think that as the costs of mfg go down, batteries become lighter and more compact, etc. We will start to see EVs take different shapes with different design platforms. The ICE platform is ~130 years old. And honestly aside from the super cars of the era didn't really get good for the average user until the...80s? EVs in mass production really started with Tesla in 2006-ish so were really just at the start of this new frontier. I'm willing to give it some leeway as the industry and tech starts to find it's legs and really advance. Check out the Hayden Paddon EV rally car video with sound and listen to the noise generator that's been worked into the driveline. Inspiration was from v10 F1 cars, and a V8 judd. The future is bright for this tech.
This is one of the 3 Gr. 4 cars that the FIA was inspired by to create the Gr. B Regulations, along with the Lancia Stratos and the Audi Quattro. Its most outstanding drivers in competition were Guy Frequelin (only at the beginning, later he would sign for Opel), Jean Ragnotti, Bruno Saby, François Chatriot, Didier Auriol and Carlos Sainz. It's the philosophy that would later be followed by the Peugeot 205 Turbo 16, the Lancia Delta S4 or the MG Metro 6R4, and which was a promotional success for the front-engine street models, as happened with the Peugeot 205. Obviously they had little to do with the front-wheel drive models, since they were, as the Gr. B regulations said, "prototypes", in the case of the Lancia Delta S4 (designed from zero, including the engine) it had nothing to do with the which would later be so successful at the time of the Gr. A that it was the front-engine street car. However, Renault, Peugeot and Austin Rover did start from the chassis of the front-wheel drive model to gradually modify them to place the engine in a central-rear position, causing their measurements to be modified, especially the width (in view it is ), but also his battle. Another curiosity is its engines that also derived from the series: Renault was equipped with the "Clèon Fonte" engine (in the 1397 cm3 version) that was equipped with a lot of Renault models since the 1960s. Peugeot mounts a special version of the PSA Group's XU engine family, specifically the XU8T, the first to mount a 16V and turbo cylinder head, with a specific displacement of 1775 cm3. And MG Metro was equipped with a 3.0 l V6 derived from the 3.5 l V8. that Austin Rover used in the Range Rover and in the Rover 3500, and that later Jaguar would also use in its Gr. C but twin turbo.
I remember being in a little village near Oxford in the early 80's when this unbelievable noise approached, sounded like a quartet of chainsaws coming down the road, when it came into view it was a 6R4, utterly amazing and quite unforgettable. Love Chris's comment on the Blaupunkt always fitted them to whatever I had.
Before these started getting really expensive, you'd often hear one, often rallyefied, blasting through small towns in France. They were hidden in the country side by people that drove the shXt out of them!
Lovely to hear about that, these days it is possible to build a replica from a 1.1 Renault 5, if one can weld and is handy mechanically, thanks to a company called Gemini Racing or Gemini Motors, something like that.
Had a T2 Turbo. I remember doing figures of eight in the snow of the car park of our local pub with my wife when we heard we were pregnant with our first daughter. I now have six daughters. Memories.

The moment I saw the thumbnail, I thought Chris should probably buy this for himself. And start a youtube channel about driving it.
Great idea. Fingers crossed he did or does it’d be a right surprise!
Thanks for your great content Chris 🙏💙
Keep them coming Chris great vids
I had a turbo gt 1988 and it had a replacement 240bhp engine but nothing worked inside but so quick
If you look at prices today .. they are so high, especially if they are in immaculate condition. Love this video !
Never say never again was using a Renault 5 Turbo 2. Great looking car
They are such a crazy cool car they don't need to be perfect, just need to be enjoyed and remembered
I had a R5 "Famous Five" in 2004.... Best car ive ever had. Mate had a modern Cooper s Chili pack, Hilarious races on roundabouts ensued!! He drove to the legal limit, i just drove to the limit and hung on!! :)
Dear Mr Harris - please make more videos.
Thank you
PS JayEmm is doing an outstanding job in your absence
It was my dream car when I was a teenager, and still is!
Always loved these, if I win the lottery on Tuesday I'll come and pick it up.
My first car was a Renault 5 ..... 'L' ... 1975, complete with umbrella gearstick - a very direct gear change indeed. I'm pleased to note that it had some crossover parts with the Turbo 1 - those door keys in the shape of the Renault emblem!!!!🤣
Keep the rews up! that`s what that car is all about! what a beauty!!!!
Thanks mate, really made my day. Yep that Renault 5 Turbo 1 is world heritage. By the way Chris, have you ever been told you look just like Henri Pescarolo?
When many cars are seed away in garages as investment projects it is great to see this kind of thing, a well used and fun carr to blast around in.😎👍
I just bought a cracking turbo 1 for the chateau in France to go alongside the alpine a110
,its a well used example at just under 120k miles but it's been well looked after and completely rust free.
Cheers
Just come across this channel love Chris Harris, great on Top Gear proper car guy great video
That was a car o always wanted to drive remember seeing them when new Chris has all the fun
Chris geeking out a bit, love it 😀
Love CC. My e46M3 cabrio is going on there shortly. Bid early, bid often! Wish the vids of the meetings were longer than 50 seconds!
I miss my turbo 1, I had the rarest of them all, still have many many photos of its total rebuild, great car
do you have a site where I can see some photos of your Turbo 1
The fact that Renault made this, and then also made the Clio V6 is applause-worthy... I'm 25 years old and I'd love to drive, or at least ride passenger in, one of these cars... It looks like a car that could have been in Tintin comics, if Tintin was made around the 80's...
This car is at the beginning of Dragon Ball first comic book.
Really hope Alpine will build us a 300hp rearwheel drive version of that new electric R5. Already confirmed as a frontwheel drive car, i believe. But they should build a rearwheel drive version too. 🤞🏼
I loved my old Renault 5 Turbo, was great fun
This is where he shines when it has less edits and everything justcomes together well. Just like how it was before topgear
What an amazing looking car. Just so cool, especially in that blue.
Around 1985 when i was 14 i seen a pearl white Turbo 2 with a red interior parked on a side street off Byres road in Glasgow, probably the most bonkers car i'd seen back then.
This is just the best content our there, more of Chris!
5:23 *me sitting there listening, imagining I’m driving this car* believe me Chris, we are listening… Always will because we get it.
A video I searched for before it was created. Thank you for making it real haha
Nearly bought a white one of these in the mid 90s. Love these! Not sure what was done to it, but the one I was looking at had 250HP.
Great video Chris everyone talks about the new cars and that is getting boring this old car stuff is good keep them coming 👏🏾👊🏾🥂
Those jaeger gauges are so cool. Love that JLC kept car gauges as only jaeger branded, despite merging in the late 1930s.
I would adore to work/talk with Chris Harris, I love his work
Need more Chris Harris content!
My mate wrote his off back in 97. It was a mint little car.
I enjoy listening to Chris Harris's opinions.Give him more cars to evacuate.
Chris Harris is the best. My favorite of his videos is his 2CV, here he is in another French car.
Agree. True passion for driving it too..
This is the type of Chris Harris content I want to see
What top gear should be ,less pissing about
This is one of the 3 Gr.
Another curiosity is its engines that also derived from the series:
Renault was equipped with the "Clèon Fonte" engine (in the 1397 cm3 version) that was equipped with a lot of Renault models since the 1960s.
Memories.
One of my favourite cars ever!
