I saw this 35 years ago. When I was 40, I asked my parents about this thinking it was some kind of dream from my childhood and they told me I watched it often between the age of 4 and 6. I just watched it at the age of 40 and still loved it. Not only that, I realised that some of the actors are still going that my kids loved. Well done to the actors, actresses, directors, and producers

I used to watch this all the time with my sister at my grandparents house! My grandpa was a cartoonist and it seemed like he had every animated movie ever made in the form of VHS at his house. For years I’ve tried to recall it, but everytime I asked someone they had no clue what I was talking about. My sister ran to me earlier today and yelled “WATERBABIES” and I gasped. Watching this for the first time since childhood. The other day I also got to watch a old childhood favorite film from my grandpas house called “Rikki tikki tavi”

As a kid, I would hike down to a stream back behind our housing area and I wondered if water babies could be in there. I recall jumping in (water level was to my ankles) and my brother said, “Now you probably destroyed their home!” This film also got me all caught up with Water Monkeys craze! I knew these were the same thing as in the film. Very disappointed I was that they weren’t…but I kept on buying just in case I did get one with water babies🤣

Feels a little bit like an inspiration for Disney's 1989' "Little Mermaid" :-) I watched "Water Babies" when I was 6 and we moved to a new city and I had my first day in the new school. I entered the room and the kids were watching it and somehow it blew my mind, I was obsessed with this movie and later with the "Little Mermaid", the BBC "Chronicles of Narnia", and the "Never-ending Story" and now after all the years I'm just trying to figure it out, why "Water Babies" were so magnetic to me - as one of my first cinematic inputs - when I only remember the fact that I was so amazed by it, and not really much what exactly happened there. I think it imprinted deeply since I got involved in scuba-diving, which is my great passion. There's something magic about this movie, obviously

This is an incredible historic film that every child should watch growing up. It is fiercely important that the sadness and horrific poverty if the 1800s is educated about in schools, and the social justice system and the rescue and deaths of such brave children as Tom.
I can understand why it’s not a common film to show modern children, because often the books are promoted alongside and the book for this piece is incredibly prejudiced in more ways than just racism.
However, in order to understand and seperate the opinions of the author and characters of those times from people of today, and the difficult languages of the book, I would recommend an educated adult read and study this with intense discussion and debate on the side.
The film perhaps, by itself, should be alright to show a child of today - but not be promoted heavily in public media where wide and false opinions can trash and skew the story and brainwash people in a negative fashion.

True story! Back in the 80s my dad who was a rolls Royce specialist engineer worked on sir David Tomlinson rolls as he resided near whare we lived in Goring on Thames! David very kindly wrote a personal messege for me and his autograph on a black and white pic of him taken in his earlier years of becoming an actor! It's a very special piece of my history for me and personalized as I once very much wanted a career in the performing arts! Wish i had perused it instead of settling for a now no longer existing sad and lonely existence if only dosnt even cut it! 😐 anyway thsts my "claim" to fame!

I never heard about this movie until one day as a teenager on a channel called THIS TV I saw it, I enjoyed it so much. The music and story make me think of the Wizard of Oz and is as whimsy as the Lion King. I don't think you will find a remake of a story like this in our day NO WAY this is one of a kind!

I love the comments people are sharing! I remember this movie from when I was a kid when it came on TV, but I only ever got to see the last 15 minutes or so of it! I never knew what it was called. But I never forgot "water babies" and that word they kept singing which I could never figure out how it was spelled or properly pronounced (hicocolora? - LOL!).So glad to FINALLY see the entire movie. Then reading these comment - wow, I'm not the only one this movie made an impression on!

Tthis movie stayed with me for decades. I remember, before RUclips, wondering if I'd ever come across this movie again. I know I'm not the first to have mentioned this here, but I also had dreams as a small child. Being underwater, yet breathing. 😊 ☮️
I hope you're having a fabulous day, whomever was destined to cross tthis tiny, virtual particle of dust. I💓 you.

i watched this as a very young child, loved it, remembered the name, and years later tracked down a copy to relive it.
It didn't age well - as a teenager, I thought it was a dumb kid's movie.
and now here it is on youtube in its entirety.... will I love it again, now that I'm older?

my father was born in Ireland and lived in London until he was 10 y/o when he came to the US. Suffice it to say, he had an affinity for British TV and movies. He sat down and watched this with me when I was a child in when I was 5 in 1979. I had such a crush on the young main actress and for a cartoon (half of it at least) it was a very mature film with adult themes and humor which I was able to follow and get at that age.
There's something magical about this movie. The animation is extremely dated which is a turn off and my children were not very interested in it as a result since they have Frozen, Coco, and Ponyo to compare it to. I guess maybe you needed to see this back then to really appreciate it.
Another cartoon from that era that similarly has aged animation but is very good and I highly recommend is 'The Mouse and his Child'. Check that out if you have a chance. There's a copy on YT somewhere.

My sister and I watched this movie all the time when we were kids, however the dialogue was dubbed some. I finished reading the book of which the movie is based off of not too long ago and it’s pretty good. The book deviates from the book in many ways. For example, towards the end of the book Mr. Grimes drowned and ends up being punished for his misdeeds. Tom travels to the end of the world to attempt to help Grimes find repentance, and be given a second chance if he can successfully perform a final penance.

Strange how things just pop into your mind, I used to love this film when I was a wee nipper, probably was about 9 or 10, I was watching "Better Call Soul" on Netflix and suddenly the song "High Cockalorum" came into my mind, no reason, certainly nothing to do with the TV programme I was watching, funny, I haven't heard that song for over 40 years and BAM, it's stuck in my mind 😂
