- Here is an early Golden Book Video Classic, "The Poky Little Puppy's Favorite Stories" (formerly released as "3 Best-Loved Golden Stories").
The second part of the video here features "The Sailor Dog," where a young dog named Scuppers, whom had to move from his old home at sea at a young age, decides to go back to being a sailor dog!
BTW, I had the book version of this when I was a kid! I can tell they changed a LOT of things from the original book.

I remember having this VHS when I was a Kid with The Sailor Dog, The Poky Little Puppy and the Patchwork Blanket and Little Toad To The Rescue. In the Poky Little Puppy Story, I like when the Puppies ask The Mother Duck and her Ducklings. That's my Favorite Part

This was my favourite story, and always wanted to be a sailor as a kid.
Had this on VHS as a kid, and my little brother and I added way too much lore to it. Had to see if I could find it again for old times' sake

I remember this book and the person that illustrated this book also illustrated mr. Dog and I also remembered that there's a little bit from the friendly book in there. That was my mistake. I remember the author of Goodnight moon, the runaway bunny and the color kittens.
Yep, Garth Williams was the illustrator. He also did the illustrations for E.B. White's "Stuart Little" and "Charlotte's Web".

Another word for spyglass is telescope.
It always did sorta stuck out being the only time the character appeared without his pants on.
@wileyk209zback I don't know how old you guys are, I'm 30 and this is the only version I know.. I use to watch it when I was 5 or 6... I just watched "the pokey little puppy" now I have to find .. little red hen.. what was it called..
That wasn't Thumbelina it was Little Toad to the Rescue. However, there was one that had Thumbelina on it along with The Ugly Duckling.

my dad used to read me this all the time, it was our favorite. he'd even sing the scuppers the sailor dog song for me.
I use to love this as a kid, now it is time to share with this generation.
this was about my favorite book when i was a kid. all i could remember about it was when he was building the house from driftwood. must be nice when you go to a seaport and see a ship and jump on and sail off and suddenly its your ship haha

damn...what person could dislike this??? ohhh the voice. lol i HATE the stupid voice for Scupper. this was my favorite golden book as a child and the voice given to him in this video has about ruined the 44 years of fond memories. :P
The Sailor dog is from 1953
I am only guessing here but I think Scuppers was voiced by Moira Quirk who's best known as the co-host/referee from Guts.

Buy the book. It's wonderful. Unfortunately the creators of this video adaptation step on the role the reader's imagination plays in the experience, and so their adaptation detracts from the carefully crafted work of the author and illustrator and imposes its own interpretation on the reader. The book stands alone as a perfect treasure.

is it just me or do any of these Dogs have English/British accents?
I think it's just you and me. This is I think an American story with British accents and other characters from Mr. Dog added by Golden Book Video. However at the end (just before the credits roll), Scuppers' UK accent just done up and disappeared. Weird!
