Hello Prof. Lewin, I always watch yoy lectures and discussions since Grade 12. Now I'm already a second year civil engineering students thanks to your lifesaver physics lectures❤
Sir Professor Walter Lewin, your this video about E = mc² is truly mind-boggling! The way you explain it makes everything so clear. It’s amazing how this equation connects energy and mass so beautifully. I am currently working on a new kinematics formula related to jerk, force, time, and mass, and your insights inspire me. Thank you, Professor Walter Lewin, for all the amazing lessons! Your teaching style makes complex topics so much easier to understand. I really appreciate how you connect everything to real-life examples, which helps us see the practical side of what we're learning. Your passion for the subject truly inspires me to study harder. I'm grateful for your patience and support in helping us grasp the material. Thank you for being such a fantastic teacher! 😊
Mindboggling indeed. I can't imagine how much material is converted in the biggest bomb at the time, which was the Tsar Bomba, which probably is a kids play now with all the research since then.
I do not check outsiders - I teach Physics. MY channel offers you 3 complete MIT courses (94 videos) + homework and exams. +1400 Videos, 4000 problems with solutions.
Professor, In America most of the 2gm mass of M&M candies is turned into human body fat. I don;t know how much in human mass, but given fission weapons tek, how much energy can be released by the nuclear incineration of the equivalent mass of human body fat the M&M produces?
2:16 Isn't the mass of the atom larger than the sum of the protons, neutrons and electrons? I see a way to generate energy without losing any of them. What is the missing 1 gram really?
the number of protons and neutrons is the same before and after fission. But the binding energy increases as the U235 nucleus breaks up in 2 smaller nuclei and thus the mass after fission is lower than before. The difference is 1 gram for the atom bomb on Hiroshima.
We All Know What Idea Does E=mc^2 Expresses But It's Hard For Us To Imagine It Up Intuitively Rather Than Mathematically Which I Suppose Even Einstien Himself Crumpled Upon ; Because Simpler Equations Like : v = u + at Also Do Expressed Mathematically Are Also Understandable Intuitively But This Energy Thing Is Mind Boggling For Sure To Even Dare At ! ,I Have Studied The Equation Mathematically And Thought It To Be As Its Like Mass Is Expressed As Highly Concentrated Form Of Energy Locked In a Body Having Mass Ready To Be Released Where c^2 Is The Factor By Which Mass Is Converted To Energy .; I Really Still Don't See This Equation When I Close My Eyes (Physically And Intuitively) ,What Are Your Thoughts Sir ? Do You See The Equation Working When You Close Your Eyes And Imagine ?
the neutrons and protons will still exist but they will be in 2 smaller nuclei (U235 breaks up). *The new mass of the 2 smaller nuclei is 1 gram lower than the mass before fission*
Second this advice ☝️ if you incorporate the homework you'll be on track with physics in no time! Ive had to watch some of the videos 2-3x but other than that its really well laid out for beginners! Thankyou@@lecturesbywalterlewin.they9259 for your contribution to science!
E=mc² is the most famous equation in all physics yet at the same time the most misunderstood when people interpret it as "mass can be converted to energy and vice versa" while what the equation really say is that energy has mass and mass has energy, so you got it wrong professor, no nucleons were harmed in this 1 gram, wanna know why? because nucleons are protected by conservation laws (conservation of baryon number)
watch the solutions to problem 213 - their is no loss of protons and neutrons due to fission but there is an increase of binding energy and therefore there is a loss of mass. The sum of the masses of the individual protons and neutrons is higher than when the neutrons aand protons are in the nucleus . that loss Δm of 1 gram caused the emormous heat ΔE= Δm*c^2 for the bomb on Hiroshima. Also do my problem 216 which deals with ths again.

Sir I am lucky to have Physics teacher like you😊❤
Thank you for your kind words!

I encourage you to continue your exploration of physics.
I like the MandM comparison. These numbers are so far removed from everyday experience that I struggle to
get my head round E=mc^2.
That is mind boggling!! I never thought of it compared to a M&M.
He is such a legend. I can't get enough of his god-like teaching skills and intelligence.
Good evening sir....from India ❤
Mindboggling indeed. I can't imagine how much material is converted in the biggest bomb at the time, which was the Tsar Bomba, which probably is a kids play now with all the research since then.
fission bombs are now replaced with Fusion bombs - callded Hydrogen bombs. They have 10^4 times more destructive power.
I am shocked to hear that ❤❤❤
Now i can feel the reall power of that equation❤❤
Thank you sir ❤❤❤
love your videos Prof. Lewin❤
Thank you sir...❤
You're welcome!
Mythic RUclips homepage pull
Sir please don't stop this nuclear physics videos! Pls sir😊😊
I will only do 1 more problem on Nuclear Physics
Hi Professor Lewin: It is mind boggling, what I find even more mind boggling is all of that energy released is only the binding energy too!
*yes, it's the mass loss due to fission*
@@lecturesbywalterlewin.they9259 yup, it's amazing
@@lecturesbywalterlewin.they9259 now we need to make sure it's never used again as a weapon, only clean energy
THAT IS UNREAL!!
Hai Prof. Lewin, I am lucky the M2M is a picture, that a clock running in my computer and not the power of a bomb.
Love the solution 🥰
I love to listen your lectures Sir
I am glad you enjoy my lectures.
Wow , INever thought it like that.
This is exactly why I love nuclear power.
Love from India ❤
Oh my god 😱
Thankyou sir ❤
Physics works; love you sir ❤
Hlo sir
i think it's morning in America so
Good Morning Sir ❤How are u😊
Glad to see u again❤❤Have a Nice Day😄
So 1 gram completely converted resulted in such damage? Wow
Tq sir
Sir some atoms decay and change into some other atom. Why we can't make new atoms now? 😅
new elements have been made which were radioactive with very short half lives - they do not exist in nature but they were (wo)man -made - use google
Superb❤
Sir now it is 2024 once check the syllabus of jee mains and help indian students please

Mast sir ❤
❤❤❤❤❤ nicely described
Now Whenever I will eat m&m the things will going to hit my mind 😂😂😂
Nice Hat ..... why do you wear it ?
I'll never buy M&M again. I'll get smarties :-).
Joking but I think everyone get's that.

your question is meaningless and ill-defined
So sir why ain't some methods are developed so that the 1gm of uranium that was utilised should be atleast increase to efficiency of 5 to 10 gm
question is very strange - use Quora
2:16 Isn't the mass of the atom larger than the sum of the protons, neutrons and electrons? I see a way to generate energy without losing any of them. What is the missing 1 gram really?

I hope you stay healthy and happy
Thank you very much!
Then why are the atoms used in LARGE HADRON COLLIDER does not create an explosion of this scale ? your take ?
LHC is not a nuclear reactor -
Watch with subtitles on 😂

Hello sir iam depressed in neet exam because of though competition if i am not able to crack than my fixture is in dark
Is it really true that the neutrons and protons ceased to exist, or are they reconfigured into different binding energies?
the neutrons and protons will still exist but they will be in 2 smaller nuclei (U235 breaks up). *The new mass of the 2 smaller nuclei is 1 gram lower than the mass before fission*
How did you calculate the energy of Hiroshima bomb????
watch solutions to Problem 213 and 214
