Eddie Hazel sure can pick ‘em up and lay ‘em down. This is most definitely more of a rock/blues tune which gave him some time to show what he possessed in that genre. Just straight ahead jam!!!! I jam with a bunch of my friends and we always play this song until our fingers bleed. You don’t have to be a good player, just have the balls to hop the train when it comes ‘round to you. 😎🤘

Mann Carter: Imagine if he'd ended his already-epic Super Bowl performance of Purple Rain by covering Maggot Brain, with the smoothest and seamless of segues between and unannounced ahead of time, and made everyone (the teams, the League execs., the fans in the stands, the corporate sponsors eager to get their commercials aired before second half play commenced, and the viewers watching the game on TV or via streaming service) wait thru the entire duration of this 10-min. + song to play-out -- who would dare say no to Prince ad-libbing on-the-fly like that?!?!

Wow came here to say exactly this and was amazed to see it was even voted as the top comment, totally agree. Santana really just see's it as a way to shred some melodies and scales, where as Hazel gets into your mind with every note and creates this melty ambivalent environment of love and emotion lol, love Maggot brain. Thanks for playing it Santana but long live Eddie Hazel.

I was in elementary school in the late 60’s early 70’s and in the auditorium at some function that is blurry in my mind, someone had the Maggot Brain album. The distinctive album cover always stuck with me BUT, even though I later became a big fan of Parliament/Funkadelic of the mid to late 70’s of my high school life I never delved into what became before the releases of those years. Fast forward to the present and the past few days have brought me back to Maggot Brain, this being my first time hearing it and being completely blown away. The depth of emotion in this composition touches me deep in my soul with my mother having passed in August and now my Dad also a little more than 3 months later.

Even Eddie Hazel played it with variations over time. That’s part of what makes it funky... the rhythm leaves lots of room for an to express themselves individually while sticking to the foundations that identify the piece. This is not like classical music where the player is confined to play notes by note.

Love Santana. Love Eddie Hazel. Flawless as his style is. It doesn't really move me until about 6:30 then he starts to make it his own, but as soon as it ends. It ends.Leaving little to no lasting impression. I just watched a video of Eddie perform in concert on Last.fm it also left me without the feeling or lingering impression that the 1971 single take recording still elicits after 47 years. There's something unique about it that has people entranced from the beginning till long after its over. Clinton fiddled with it in the studio in a way that no other performance can recreate. The entire track was recorded in one take. The solo is played in a pentatonic minor scale in the key of E over another guitar track of a simple arpeggio. Hazel's solo was played through a fuzzbox and a wah pedal; some sections of the song utilize a delay effect. The only things I can figure that give it its unique qualities are maybe the physical dimensions of the recording area and /or the state of mind of the artists and techs making the 1971 recording.
uh oh I may have spoken to soon. The mantel has been passed IMO to Michael Weber. Hear him own this piece. I don't believe Eddie Hazel is offended, cuz Michael has risen above it all! KUDOS MIchael! ruclips.net/video/pEZ_U7T7WZs/видео.html

Here are two of my favourite guitar players. I love the way Ronnie Earl still manages to make sense of his Blues phrasing on this tune. Who cares who is better! Music, when at it's best is beyond qualification other than soulful one....and this is soulful. Now if only they could both play on Song Of The Wind! Let's get Santana, Ronnie Earl and Robben Ford on that one!

whenwillpeopleunderstand that sounds are detached from ownership. once it is produced, boom it exists its out there, and in this case you'll never succeed to compare both because there's absolutely no diference between them: they'r just two separeted interpretations of the same idea of the sound.
its as simple as if eddie cooked baked potatoes and added a special sauce while santana steals the recipe and changes it for french fries and its own spice. they nothin alike but they both taste awesome

I love Carlos, but I just dont get the feel here. When Hazel played the tune, he was told to play it like his momma just died, and he captured that with amazing feeling. But sorry Carlos, I just dont feel that here. Carlos is great, but I dont know if anyone could ever capture that amazing feeling that Eddie Hazel ever did.

+Junii Waves Not comparing the talent of both, as yes I agree, they both kick some major ass, but I just find it hard for anyone to bring to the table the emotion Eddie did in this song. Its kind of like Hollywood and the garbage they are doing today with all the remakes. Certain movies, and songs, just should never be remade.

+mybourbon george clinton told eddie to play like he had been *told* his mother had just died, *but then learned it wasn't true*. this captures the feeling pretty well to me.

+mybourbon I agree. I have always held the highest opinion of Carlos' playing, but this does not even do the song justice. Just horrible.
