This is Mike Hampton playing Maggot Brain as close(until about 8:00) to Eddie's original as possible. This is wonderful!! His ability to replicate the song note for note is what got him the job as lead guitarist with the Funkadelic when he was 17 years old while Eddie was in jail. Play on Mike... Eddie is looking down on you proudly
Same. It WILL be played at mine. As hard as I cry when I hear it...yep. This is it. This and a few slow songs from Buckethead like "Heaven is Your Home(For my father, Thomas Manley Carroll)" and "Always Watching" and Pike 13 Track 6 and Pike 78, Track 1. Ironically when this song was made Eddie Hazel ask George Clinton how he should play it....George replied "Play it like your mother had died" and to picture that day...
Mike Kidd Funkadelic Hampton is a pioneer of modern funk, rock and metal. Mike has been playing with George Clinton since he was 17 years old. Eddie Hazel passed the torched to Mike and those who know what Mike brings to the table, knows that Mike has not let Eddie down. People need to research the history of Mike Hampton, he is definitely the real deal.

this song comes and gets me in the deepest corners of my soul, i experience very intense emotions while it lasts...no other song has ever been so powerful to me, ever ! MUCH RESPECT !
Why do people hate on Kidd? The guy is P-Funk through to the core. He was lead guitarist on One Nation for christ's sake. How does it make sense to rip on a member of Funkadelic for playing a Funkadelic tune, and doing a damn fine job of it? Eddie was a great player, one of the most soulful of all time, but he was also an unreliable addict. George had to recruit Mike because Eddie was locked up for assault. Don't hate on Mike for stepping in and doing the job.

cj small fair call brother, they were all great musicians, personally i dont like to compare musicians, music is about individuality, its about influences, everybody can sound like everybody else it depends on the mood etc.. thats the beauty of music, i wish people could just listen to a piece of music & just appreciate it for what it is.. this is a great version of the song, probably my fav, but it may not be someone elses & thats cool... have a good one & rock on..
First, Michael plays a great guitar, but, seems like here he is just playing the notes, but without feeling. Secondly, let me ask you, do you love "on" your girlfriend or wife? Do you love "on" anything? No, because it doesnt make sense. You can love someone or something, but you cant love "on" it or them. Well the same goes for hate. You can hate something or someone, but you cant hate "on" it or them.
Being a Brit and most of my friends were punk rockers as a funkateer I was ignored. This will never grow old first heard as a 14 year old now approaching 60.God bless the funk.
The 3 H's = Hendrix, Hazel and Hampton. Michael Hampton is carrying the torch on this. Believe it or not, this song has Jimi's melody on "Bring my baby back" was captured by Eddie Hazel with pure emotions of his concerns, and now handed over to Michael as he completes the trilogy. We are so blessed to have these Brothers carrying The FUNK Guitar!
I remember this dude posting that the keyboard eventually was going to do away with the guitar as a lead instrument. I read that and just shook my head in disbelief. I'm right there with you. Reaks of emotion.
Sun. Mountains. Blue sky. Quiet wind. And maggot brain. I see. I feel. I listen. Good music. Good life. Happy tears. Excelent emotion. I wish a good existence for all in this world. Thank you funkadelic. One world under the groove. Peace.
This is one of the best solos of all time. Even better than the original. The phrasing is just unbelievable. It just goes on and on he never plays a dull melody.
I've Never tried to compare the two...... Eddie Hazel and Mike Hampton, THEY ARE BOTH GREAT LEGENDS TO ME, and to hear them both play at the same time , and on the same song, on the same stage, is a Cosmic Treat. I'm too Absorbed in the Sounds coming from their instruments as if they ARE telling a story and asking us to ride with them on this Fantastic Journey that is Beyond anything we can ever Comprehend. Not Many Musicians can bring a Sound so Powerful that It allows tears to flow.
when it was recorded George Clinton told Eddie Hazel to think of the saddest thing in his life, the death of his mother, while playing. And he did, as legend goes ... you can hear it

Eddie's signature song. For anyone to pay it as he did is a tribute to Eddie. Anyone who adds their own personal style foe whatever reason is a personal choose like it is a personal choice to like which ever version someone plays. Eddie did press the mold and standard that everyone is measured with. Its all good to me.

Micheal (KiDD Funkadelic) Hampton Auditioned for Funkadelic by playing this song.....and got the job! Funk approved by Eddie Hazel and George Clinton...Fly on Eddie (rip)
I’ve been a rock pig for over 40 years; listened to ‘000s of albums in my time. A year ago during first lockdown I googled ‘greatest guitar solos of all time’ cause I was a bit bored, stuck at home. Up came everything I’ve heard before except for this one track. ‘Maggot Brain’ by Funkadelic. WTF? Funkadelic? Aren’t they a urm...funk band? Purchased the track and was utterly astonished and blown away by what I now regard as THE greatest solo of all time. It’s not just about the notes, it’s the feel (“as if somebody told you your mama just died”). I thought there were no surprises left for me - never been happier to be wrong. And for the curious... 2. Baby’s on Fire - Brian Eno (played by Robert Fripp) 3. Drive Home - Steven Wilson (played by Guthrie Govan)
That was beautiful ..love this song he does a great version..thank you for whoever recorded this and uploaded you are a true hero...cheers from Sur Tejas
Thank you for posting this. This is, by far, my favorite version of Maggot Brain and the one I listen to most often. 🙏❤️🎸 The sound is GREAT and Kidd played such an amazing rendition of MB that night.
Eddie Hazel would be 69 yrs old now (2020), I know, because I was born same year 1950 . Made many 8-track copies for my friends. Anyone who would listen could have one. So much love and pain to hear, it's almost unbearable!
I may not be a musician, however I know when someone pours out their soul in sonic form like this they are rare and beautiful people and we should love them with all our hearts and minds, music such as this, artist like Kidd are a once in a life time happening, we should all be so fortunate to have lived in this time of unique Funk, may peace be with you, from Tianyvu the Bringer of Light.
I am a musician and disagree. EDDIE poured his heart and soul into this. Mike just basically plays it deadpan, practically note for note what Eddie did. He's obviously a very good guitarist but has practically 0 feeling when he plays this song
Amazing. I've loved Eddie Hazel's original for years, what a wonderful and respectful version. It captures everything from the original and adds life. Damn, if only I could play it this good.
Like the way he just keep still instead of jumping up and throwing himself about, he hardly moved just concentrating on his activity, brilliant guitar ripping solo. I can hear the Hendrix influence.
I can't help it! Every time I hear this song my brain goes into an amazing mix of Bi-Polar emotions and charging electrons/chemistry that both stimulates and calm's my inner spirit! Many forms of music from a wide range of musicians have that ability to bring joy to that inner spirit. I view those individual songs as messages from God that stimulate directly to the mind without words to comprehend. Often these songs are discovered by the musicians through pure chance or what one may call a sudden revelation. Me, I view them as a gift or a grace from the Heaven's above and this rhythmic masterpiece is beyond a doubt one of the best of those unique gifts to the human race!
Not hardly! It is because of the efforts and talents that this gift from God was revealed! News, not everything that's a musician produces is a masterpiece to their credit, but if they are lucky they may get a miraculous piece of art!
This is not just music but we are in the presence of the POETIC. I say that because each note is yelling, screaming, crying, and when this is played the way it needs to be you are moved into a place where love and war; death and joy are being revealed. Man I am blessed.
I think it is such an honor when one musician plays anothers song - a tribute. Lots of musicians have paid tribute to Eddie Hazel and still continue too
First time I listened to MAgoot Brain I was 11 years old. I worked as an artist's helper and his neighbor turned it on at full volume. I freaked out right away. I borrowed the LP and to this day, for me, it's one of the greatest guitar works I've ever heard. I venture to say that it is the greatest guitar work I have ever heard.
OMFG!! The tone, the feel, that touch he has on the fretboard...just absolutely stunning!! I'd have gladly paid for the ticket that night just for that 10 minutes alone!!
saw Eddie perform this at st. Andrews in Detroit. we couldn't believe that it sounded just like the album. makes me think of my cousin Mitch Hayden. we saw some great music together
That is Michael "Kidd" Hampton. He was recruited as a seventeen-year-old guitarist by the band Funkadelic, after the original guitarist Eddie Hazel left the band. The guy is not joke. Always have played with little or no emotions. But, your ears can not tell it.
Miss that raw 60's 70's rawness that what honest in a way anyone w a heart could just die over. Its changed forms - every gen.Has theirs- But im so homesick. Thanks that i was Bused so i could be exposed to the best music i may never have been. Thanks George

Thanks for the post. Mike is truly a rare talent and a good friend. Great video and sound quality. So many bad sounding versions out there, it's refreshing to see this one. Brings out his real sound.

One of the best guitar solos of all time regardless if Eddie or Mike is playing lead period. I just turned 65
Happy bday
Happy birthday nigga
This man is speaking truths that words cannot convey.
Only time I’ve cried at a gig was hearing this when they played Manchester. Head blown off.🙌👏
Eddie Hazel is applauding this in heaven!!! AMAZING!!
OMG!!!!!!!! I want this played at my funeral exactly like this.
Hell yeah , it can be playing as they lower me in the ground
@Kristus är vår Frälsare, Halleluja You must be fun at parties.
If this its not played at my funeral, i am not going
Wow, not you got me thinking that. I was gonna go with Bob Marley's "Redemption Song", but I'm changing my mind......
Funny thing you say that...George Clinton said to Eddie Hazel..."I want you to play this like you found out your mother just died".
That brought sobbing tears to my eyes.
Amazing guitaring !!!
Funtastic performance !!! Some times i can listen this a 24 h when i m happy or sad. With this rocket gitar and sports sun glasses he looks to me like some astronaut from the unknown galaxy who bringing hope, positive energy and love to all !!!! I m sory for my bad english and thanks for this good quality video !!! GREATHINGS FROM SERBIA !!!!!!
2. Baby’s on Fire - Brian Eno (played by Robert Fripp)
A real guitar and a real guitar player made for each other, legendary
A bible of funky beauty and strength Mt favorite 🎸 recording of all time it's a blessing 🙌 and gold to my ears heart and soul 💛 ❤️ ♥️ 💖
I love this song. One of my all time favs! Eddie Hazel‼️ 🎸✌🏼
Every time....a thousand times over....it blows my mind..
Every time....just...wow
Boy do I miss the 70's
Wow!!! How??? This song drove me from tears of sadness to joy... What more can you ask for 🤘
Good God...he is KILLIN it! Yeeessss!
This will be played at my funeral
Amazing. I've loved Eddie Hazel's original for years, what a wonderful and respectful version. It captures everything from the original and adds life. Damn, if only I could play it this good.
Goosebumps at 4:31, immortal tune fantastic rendition
Like the way he just keep still instead of jumping up and throwing himself about, he hardly moved
just concentrating on his activity, brilliant guitar ripping solo.
Ron B
Leaving a comment because I can't comprehend how good he is playing...
This is not just music but we are in the presence of the POETIC. I say that because each note is yelling, screaming, crying, and when this is played the way it needs to be you are moved into a place where love and war; death and joy are being revealed. Man I am blessed.
Every new musician, especially guitarists, are required - REQUIRED - to listen to this song as part of their educations.
BakedBeanTeen imagine using reddit lmao
Some More Songs for me as an beginner?
I just got a guitar last week and this is by far my favorite guitar solo
Yeah....no. Not a requirement
The reason it has a heavy hearted feel is I believe the story goes that George Clinton told Eddie Hazel to play it like his mother just died!
Amazing! Absolutely beautiful! Thank You, God Bless.
absolutely beautiful....there is no color boundaries in rock...amazing performance....
Michael you couldn’t played that any more beautifully. I applaud your respect for the the love giving to the wires🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾❤️❤️❤️💯💯🔥🔥🔥
live @ Montreux
I think it is such an honor when one musician plays anothers song - a tribute. Lots of musicians have paid tribute to Eddie Hazel and still continue too
very good! this song is a classic I grew up with and got high too over so many years! Nice job!
Eddie Hazel lives on in the song song and performance.
Jimi Hendrix would be very proud.
I come back to this video a few times a year, no other version hits like this, its a masterpiece, I get lost in it every time.
Michael 'Kidd Funkadelic' Hampton. The legend
the feeling when you listen to this is inexplicable...damn
OMG, the Kidd killed it... makes me miss Eddie even more!!!
I'm thinking he is Eddie ?
Not sure what the kid is but this guy sounds like Eddie hazel just fat and old and awesome aye?
No, that's Michael Hampton aka Kidd Funkadelic.
Whenever im feeling down, this one right here brings me right back up…..the emotion is unreal.
What a great composition - simply awesome! 🎸🙌❤️
Miss that raw 60's 70's rawness that what honest in a way anyone w a heart could just die over.
Its changed forms - every gen.Has theirs-
But im so homesick.
Thanks that i was Bused so i could be exposed to the best music i may never have been.
Thanks George
This song watching him play gives me such a energy boost and chills all over my life
Great stuff, love Funkadelic in all forms
Chills all over. Absolutely brilliant. Some people are just gifted.
This is the most underrated guitar solo of all time this is the most heartfelt soUL felt soul-searching catharsis error.. EVER
I’m 63 listen to lotta music a lot a guitar.
Yall can hate Mike but he kept eddies legacy alive
The real know who created maggot brain 🧠
Mike kept the torch lit 🔥
Thanks for the post. Mike is truly a rare talent and a good friend. Great video and sound quality. So many bad sounding versions out there, it's refreshing to see this one. Brings out his real sound.
This could be the background of every time! I can't get enough!
This, is it. The greatest and best song in the world. How could you ever forget something like this.
I just feeled out my last will & testament, and I have documented papers that say for this song to play at my funeral, and I want it fucking loud!
It just touches my soul every time I hear it.
Brilliant. I saw Eddie Hazel do this decades ago; this really nails it!
THIS IS THE BEST I HEARD YET!!!!!!!!!!
Michael you brought tears to my eyes... GOD you are so amazing Michael...
I am exhausted with love for this very important epic from FUNK.
This my favorite you tube video of all time!!!
Who says a Funk band can’t play Rock music?
One of the greatest guitar solo’s of our time-only Pink Floyd’s brick in the wall is competing with this....
Funk excellence......
But Pink Floyd isnt a funk band they are Progressive Rock Band
by using Another Brick In The Wall Pt.2 as your example you should have said
Who says Rock bands can't play Funk music xD
This is blues...
I love this song so much, I made a jam track of the song so I could practice soloing over it. Maggot Brain - Funkadelic Style Backing Track in E Minor
I play to that jam track almost every day. Thank you.
Funny running into a channel I use daily. Thanks for your tracks.
I love this group. Funkadelic is the shit. Wish i heard of them before stumbling on their recordings earlier this year. Right up there with sabbath, Hendrix, ozzy and many more pioneers of guitar rock.
Have loved it since i first heard it ,as a pre teen,in my 60 s now , my cousin and i ,both musicians of sorts , SO BEAUTIFUL,HE PASSED ON, LOVE YOU DONALD, SEPTEMBER 2018 ! WE WOULD SAY FAR OUT AND GO FAR OUT !
