Aside from its spike in memes, Revengence songs still convey personal messages from its characters. It's no wonder why it remains beloved, if not well known, years after its release.
The character of Sam... I'll try not to spoil anything egregiously, but it's very much accurate to say that he's a dark counterpart to Raiden. A rival with similar ideals but standing on opposite sides when it comes to the deciding moment.
There's another interesting detail in how the game uses this song: Usually you won't hear the lyrics of the boss theme until phase 3 of the fight, while this one has them as long as the character is holding their sword. Considering the lyrics, this detail seems pretty fitting.
Sam is scion of a prominent swordmaster family who even inherited the family's sword - reforged into the red cyberblade he uses. He used to follow bushido, code of honor for the warriors, but by the point of the fight he is just a killer mercenary, serving "the enemy". He used to only fight using his body and skill - but he got a cyber arm after losing one in a fight. Although he is not a villain, he is still a shell of himself - a lost soul devoid of ideals. He is glad to challenge Raiden, because Raiden might be able to finish what Sam tried before.
He does have an enhancement suit but no cybernetics besides his arm (basically he was using technology that was probably older than he was at that point.)
All Sam has left as for purpose is the fight. It's all he's good at, but he has nothing to fight for. He's not evil or anything. He's just a lost soul without purpose, doing the only thing he believes himself designed to do; fight. And he is actually the only character without ANY cybernetic enhancements besides his arm (which was cut off). He just dunked on Raiden as a pure man.
@@yes7819 I'm not sure I'd say that. Not only does he clearly still have the same skill, but his Iaido style of fighting is actively enhanced by that robot arm because it lets him do way more powerful draw slashes. In the first fight against Sam it shows this when the camera specifically shows his sheath shooting out the blade like a gun before the attack happens and it zooms in on his robot arm to hammer the point home. The framing is basically saying "all of these things worked in conjunction with eachother to make the attack as strong as it is".

Fun how you are going through the MGR songs, because all boss themes are about the backstory/background of the bosses. Essentially giving context and an explanation about their actions, which is cool because the game itself doesn't explain it to you.
Eh sorta... I'd say they actually do a pretty good job explaining Monsoon, Sundowner, and Armstrong and then Mistral gets fleshed out in the blade wolf dlc while Sam has his own dlc that goes more in depth on his character.
@@diegopugaquintanilla4344 No yeah, I completely understand that, but I feel like at least with Monsoon and Sundowner it was really straightforward, plus Monsoon's theme is somewhat debatable as to who it is referring to, whether it's Raiden (the most likely answer) or Monsoon himself. The songs are good don't get me wrong, I just feel like people overlook a LOT of the dialogue and then act like the songs are the only way you can understand the character.
Sam was originally a good guy, being a vigilante with the carefree personality of Dante (from DMC). After getting defeated by Armstrong, Sam got no choice but to accept his offer to work for him. This song plays in his duel to the death with Raiden with 2 results he got in mind: 1. If he wins, he will continue carrying out Armstrong's plan to start a war in the Middle East. 2. If Raiden wins, then he will give his sword to Wolf with the hope that Raiden can actually stop Armstrong So yeah the song says that Sam's actions are not of his choice and his original identity has been lost after his defeat to Armstrong, but in his faceoff with Raiden, he would let blood decides what happens next, hence "the only thing i know for real"
Without spoiling too much, this is actually Jetstream Sam's theme; the brazillian dude that messes Raiden up at the end of the tutorial stage lol. Only the instrumental version plays during that "fight", but their actual duel in the endgame plays the lyrical version, and it's wonderful. Sam's one of the best characters in the game, for many reasons.
Pretty spot on analysis. The character this theme is for, sam, is a samurai who’s obsessed with bettering himself and “sharpening his skills” seeing himself as a kind of heroic lone wolf. However, the villains of the game manage to be the first people to ever truly defeat him in a fight, so out of a combination of respect and fear he accepts their offer to work for them in exchange for the opportunity to keep fighting, but now he realizes he’s not the hero he once was
Jetstream Sam is kinda like a dark reflection of Raiden, a path he could've ended up had he picked the wrong fight. However, Sam's story is only briefly hinted at in Metal Gear Rising's main campaign. To get the full picture, you'll need to dive into the DLC.
Please don't spoil yourself. I know most people think Metal Gear Rising Revengeance is just a Meme game, but it does have some good story in there, with a LOT of character backstory and information in game, just hidden in codec calls. I would actually argue that Armstrong doesn't have a theme song. "Collective Conciousness" is about the public perception on politicians like Armstrong, but it doesn't reflect his true ideals at all. "It Has To Be This Way" is moreso Raiden's theme than Armstrong's, because it reflects Raiden's ideology after the whole game, when he's at the end of his journey. A part of Armstrong's final words ("You _carve your own path,_ use whatever methods you see fit.") also confirms that it is Raiden's theme.

Cool analysis. The Songs are indeed sung from the perspective of the Bosses, but in many ways they reflect aspects of Raiden too. Actually, you could argue that "It Has to Be This Way" (the actual final Boss music), is actually sung from Raiden's perspective, since it uses his Main Leitmotif.
Something I personally strongly associate this song with is my interpretation of the FF14 Warrior of Light. Someone too skilled for their own good, facing a great ordeal, and struggling to retain a sense of self and connect with who they've become after everything they've been through.
Each character brings SO MUCH history with them, one more than others but all of them are incredible, having their own philosophy and ideias and why they do the things in their way.
First time I played MGR, I thought that Sam would indeed be the final boss due to the anticipation for that fight and everything that you go through the game up to that point and if it ended right there, I would've been pretty satisfied, but OH BOY, there's still like 2 or 3 hours left in the game and what insane final hours those are...
Ever listened to Patapon 1/2/3 music? That game series and it's music is a diamond in the rough (remasters are less so 'cause of some bugs, but still good). I think you might enjoy it. The music is also dynamic, with extra vocals and sounds playing in-game based on what the player does, and what song is playing. Each bit of music has a few stages. There's stage 0, 1, 2, then Fever Mode, and each point will change the music depending on how well the player keeps their beat. I recommend seeing the early gameplay of Patapon 2 for a bit of context, then listening to the Instrumental tracks especially Gyorogyoro, Acchichichi/ Hot Hot Hot (desert theme), Pokkurimakka (which a really good instrumental can be heard for Patapon 3, on a level (Evilmass of Adamance) which on Floor 1 and 2 fits really well with the traps), and last: Hey Whazzat (final boss of Patapon 2, who also acts with double speed, challenging the player's rhythmic mindset along with music that is so chaotic yet somehow melodic.) And if you're fine with spoilers, watch the boss fights of Patapon 2, and Patapon 3's Evilmass of Adamance level (Floor 1 and 2 only). You'll hear the dynamic aspects kick in, and it's great. Just one last thing to note: Videos with instrumentals and gameplay vary in quality. A range of "Instrumental" videos include the dynamic audio too, but that's not a good representation without gameplay with the dynamic audio. And gameplay can potentially be brute-forced, especially stunlocking Patapon 2's final boss or just nuking things so fast you don't get to listen to the music enough.
MGR's use music to take the game from a solid 7 to a 10 for me. The way they use the lyrics to convey more about the characters than the story tells you and ths timing of the music really elevates the whole experience. I look forward to you covering more of them since theres a ton to unpack from the lyrics. Great job as always
without the context its easy to see the misses here and there, but there's still alot that still fits the character. which shows how much the song fits the character without being literal.
"The man in the mirror nods his head" really sums it up perfectly. The idea that he no longer recognizes himself, and reflecting on how he's changed makes him realize that he's looking at the face of a stranger. This fits perfectly into the theme of the song, a man who doesn't remember what he was fighting for in the first place, but he fights anyway because it's the only thing he knows, the only way he knows how to live.
I love the MGR OST. You should also take a look at The Stains Of Time; my personal favorite. A Stranger I Remain, I'm My Own Master Now and Rules of Nature following closely behind
Even though I'm not a mgr fan , but everyday i listen to this song to motivate myself , i tell myself that in life there will be bad times , there will be blood shed , and i have to get over it
I’m not sure if it’ll be your type of jam but brutal orchestra has some pretty good ost’s in it. My personal favorite is “feel the rhythm” which is easily the longest one in the game. I hope you check it out sometime!
Metal Gear Rising Revengeance has some sick boss themes. I'd say A Stranger I Remain, Stains of Time, Red Sun, and Collective Consciousness are the next good things to react to
i like that the music and fight itself have an deeper meaning that can be put down that sam uses actions and his sword to do the talking, thats why the instrumental part is when he looses hid blade for a while in the fight
Eager to see more as I feel a lot of people don`t analyse the lyrics and even the music itself, which is crucial for MGR songs ^^ There`s so many good ones to pick from, my personal favourite would have to be Stranger I Remain. Love your content!
as a guy who has had the metal gear rising soundtrack on my phone since 2013, i can't really explain how happy i am with how much love this game and especially its music has been getting recently almost a decade later. i know its partially because of memes, but it still introduces more people to this absolute banger of a soundtrack that i have thrown my voice out to when singing in the car ride to work on multiple occasions.
Two suggestions for things to look into. First, the Pharos Sirius dungeon music from FF14... for being a random side dungeon that track is really intense. Secondly, it'd be awesome to see you blind react to literally anything from the 'Warhammer 40k: Mechanicus' soundtrack, the music from that game breaks your brain if you're not used to some really non-traditional aesthetics.
This is the first video of yours I have ever seen, and I have to say I love the inclusion of subtitles! That's really nice to have, and I don't see many people captioning their videos.
Revengence handels its story really weirdly but its very unique for it. If you played the game with music turned off you'd get the basic story. Team of mercenaries doing bad things and such. But i think the majority of the story is layered in the music. Ever boss gets a unique track with lyrics which badically flushes out their character, coupled with secret lore and stuff and theres a much deeper game burried underneath and its a really interesting approach.
An extra point: Noticed the whistles during the track, like the start, for example? Giving it the air of an Old West Duel? The brazilian Chad this track is revealing in the lyrics uses a scabbard for his sword that is quite literally an AR-15 modified to shoot blanks (And subsequently his blade) and create Iaijutsu Quickdraw slashes of the caliber of Vergil from DMC.
This song is the three songs before the final boss fight, I believe. And you hit the nail on the head. The villain this song was based on, felt like too much of a good character to be considered a villain.
The MGR music takes the power and meaning of music in games to a whole other level. It's just so good. Also.. Fun fact: the original singer has recently put out a 2022 cover of this song on youtube. Still sounds really good!

I'll try not to spoil: part about feeling only cold wind might be reffering to the group Sam (character of this song) now fights for and his place in it. Not 100% sure about it, but it can be. Thank you for amazing content❤
I really like the flute you hear throughout the song. Given that Raiden and Jetstream Sam both fight with katanas, the flute gives it a Japanese samurai duel vibe meets wild west vibe that is in the background.
Regarding the cold wind, each of the bosses are the "winds of destruction", and most of them mention wind in their songs. The hot wind, the cold wind, the violent winds, etc.
without much in the ways of spoilers the aspect about forgetting their identity isnt literal, its more about a sense of losing who they ARE and what they are fighting for.
SPOILERS!! Sam is the antithesis of Raiden Raiden is what Sam once was. Sam wanted to kill the politician(Armstrong) for letting others die for his ideals. The politician defeats Sam in a Duel, and Sam is kinda forced to join the politician and since then knows nothing but fighting. And then Raiden comes along and reminds him of his original goal. But Sam is to far gone to be saved and Raiden has to kill him in a final duel between the two of them. That's also where this Song plays. The instrumental version of this played in the first mission in Raiden's first fight against Sam,but Sam didn't take the fight against Raiden serious and was very onesided in Sam's favour, which is why the lyrics weren't playing (If i got anything wrong please correct me)
As many people have said, your analysis was spot on, the song for Mistral or Rules of Nature would be a good one to do next. I have to really complement the meme however. That thumbnail is perfection.
It's just 00:10 AM in the Brazil and in the moment i'm watching, I've played e finished Metal Gear Rising Revengeance, THIS MUSIC IS HUGE, I still vibing to it even I'm more interested about learn it from you analysing its lyrics
For a bit of Artistic reference, Sam, who this song is about is a reference to the Wind God in Japanese Culture who had a rivalry with a lightning god named Raiden, that won in folklore. Sam's design was inspired both by the western cowboy, hence why he is a group called desparado and uses a bandana shaped armor, and samurai, hence his first name.
There is another small point, I have not seen it mentioned anywhere. When fighting with copies of Mistral and Monsoon, the soundtrack has no words, since these copies do not have the soul and personality of the main characters. (I apologize for my English, I'm sitting through a translator)
He was forced to become something different that's for sure "Like monsoon said, it's gonna take more than losing a limb to stop us. You got the job son!"- from Jetstream Sam dlc
Your understanding of lyrics are on a another level! 🤯 Correction, you can quite literally guess the whole end-game just from a single song. I'm baffled...
The final boss kind of has 2 songs because you technically fight him twice. -The first song being "Collective Consciousness" -The second is "It has to be this Way" Both songs are absolute bangers

I recommend seeing the early gameplay of Patapon 2 for a bit of context, then listening to the Instrumental tracks especially Gyorogyoro, Acchichichi/ Hot Hot Hot (desert theme), Pokkurimakka (which a really good instrumental can be heard for Patapon 3, on a level (Evilmass of Adamance) which on Floor 1 and 2 fits really well with the traps), and last: Hey Whazzat (final boss of Patapon 2, who also acts with double speed, challenging the player's rhythmic mindset along with music that is so chaotic yet somehow melodic.)
And if you're fine with spoilers, watch the boss fights of Patapon 2, and Patapon 3's Evilmass of Adamance level (Floor 1 and 2 only).
I love how in the fight blades clash in turn with lyrics. Like “there will be blood ⚔️ she’d ⚔️.
I love the MGR OST. You should also take a look at The Stains Of Time; my personal favorite.
A Stranger I Remain, I'm My Own Master Now and Rules of Nature following closely behind
Even though I'm not a mgr fan , but everyday i listen to this song to motivate myself , i tell myself that in life there will be bad times , there will be blood shed , and i have to get over it
5:04 hes a man fighting for causes he doesn't believe and reasons he doesnt understand
I’m not sure if it’ll be your type of jam but brutal orchestra has some pretty good ost’s in it. My personal favorite is “feel the rhythm” which is easily the longest one in the game. I hope you check it out sometime!
what i love about the narrative in rising is that the songs tell you way more about the characters than any single cutscene or line of dialogue
Metal Gear Rising Revengeance has some sick boss themes.
I'd say A Stranger I Remain, Stains of Time, Red Sun, and Collective Consciousness are the next good things to react to
The Brazilian Samurai cuts his way into Marco’s channel
😂
i like that the music and fight itself have an deeper meaning that can be put down that sam uses actions and his sword to do the talking, thats why the instrumental part is when he looses hid blade for a while in the fight
Eager to see more as I feel a lot of people don`t analyse the lyrics and even the music itself, which is crucial for MGR songs ^^ There`s so many good ones to pick from, my personal favourite would have to be Stranger I Remain.
Love your content!
“There Will be BLOOD-SHED” still gives me chills
Thumbnail is on point, good analysis of the lyrics and character
The funny thing is, he's right about the politician being the final boss
as a guy who has had the metal gear rising soundtrack on my phone since 2013, i can't really explain how happy i am with how much love this game and especially its music has been getting recently almost a decade later. i know its partially because of memes, but it still introduces more people to this absolute banger of a soundtrack that i have thrown my voice out to when singing in the car ride to work on multiple occasions.
Two suggestions for things to look into. First, the Pharos Sirius dungeon music from FF14... for being a random side dungeon that track is really intense. Secondly, it'd be awesome to see you blind react to literally anything from the 'Warhammer 40k: Mechanicus' soundtrack, the music from that game breaks your brain if you're not used to some really non-traditional aesthetics.
one of my favourite of all time probably in my top 50 it so good i used to keep it on a loop endless joy .
I just love how the characters and their songs in this game have such strong personality.
in the thumbnail he actually looked like Sam too, damn.
That’s the point 😂
It's just insane how much of a character being showed through their music themes
This is the first video of yours I have ever seen, and I have to say I love the inclusion of subtitles! That's really nice to have, and I don't see many people captioning their videos.
!! :)
*notices title and thumbnail* Show me a good time, Marco ! LET'S DANCE
Honestly, i like the stuff behind the guitar solo more than the solo itself lol
An extra point: Noticed the whistles during the track, like the start, for example? Giving it the air of an Old West Duel?
The brazilian Chad this track is revealing in the lyrics uses a scabbard for his sword that is quite literally an AR-15 modified to shoot blanks (And subsequently his blade) and create Iaijutsu Quickdraw slashes of the caliber of Vergil from DMC.
Baller video again man love the reaction and breakdowns I will say all the mgsrv osts are on my workout playlist
Yes! Good to see that you finally listened to it. Absolute banger. I loved the analasys, yougot his story on point!
try not to say: STANDING HERE!
its amazing how you perfectly described jetstream sam
This song is the three songs before the final boss fight, I believe. And you hit the nail on the head. The villain this song was based on, felt like too much of a good character to be considered a villain.
Now we only need "stains of time", "red sun" and "im my own master now"... Actually now that I think about it all of them. ALL
The MGR music takes the power and meaning of music in games to a whole other level. It's just so good.
Also.. Fun fact: the original singer has recently put out a 2022 cover of this song on youtube. Still sounds really good!
The Brazilian winds \ Sams song and the Sam boss fight is insane.
Meatal Gear Rising: Re-ven-gee-an-ss is.... Not a word in the dictionary. It is also one of my favorite games, besides GENSHIN IMPACT
-From an Incorrect Summary
A fellow Maxor enjoyer I see
The thumbnail is top tier
MGR The Stains of Time, Rules of Nature, Red Sun waiting to be heard. Also final battle is "It has to be this way" 😃
I love that you also analyse the lyrics too
I'd love to see how you see this song after finishing MGRR
I'll try not to spoil: part about feeling only cold wind might be reffering to the group Sam (character of this song) now fights for and his place in it. Not 100% sure about it, but it can be.
Thank you for amazing content❤
I really like the flute you hear throughout the song. Given that Raiden and Jetstream Sam both fight with katanas, the flute gives it a Japanese samurai duel vibe meets wild west vibe that is in the background.
Jesus christ, these are some REALLY GOOD thumbnails you have!
Im a lucky man!
Love this music. Glad to see your reaction/analysis!
Hope you can do a video on each of the MGR lyric songs as you progress through the game because I really enjoy the insight you give!
SPOILERS!!
Sam is the antithesis of Raiden
Raiden is what Sam once was.
The instrumental version of this played in the first mission in Raiden's first fight against Sam,but Sam didn't take the fight against Raiden serious and was very onesided in Sam's favour, which is why the lyrics weren't playing
(If i got anything wrong please correct me)
try not to say: there will be...
BLOOD!!!
SHED!!!
As many people have said, your analysis was spot on, the song for Mistral or Rules of Nature would be a good one to do next. I have to really complement the meme however. That thumbnail is perfection.
the sam fight is insane. its just you, him, the sunset, and the soil. one of the best bossfights ever
I love how you rocked out to the song
I would love to see you cover the rest, including "The Hot Wind Blowing"
There is another small point, I have not seen it mentioned anywhere. When fighting with copies of Mistral and Monsoon, the soundtrack has no words, since these copies do not have the soul and personality of the main characters. (I apologize for my English, I'm sitting through a translator)
You should cover I'm My Own Master Now. My favorite song and for my favorite character.
A stranger I remain and it has to be this way are two amazing songs as well!
He was forced to become something different that's for sure
"Like monsoon said, it's gonna take more than losing a limb to stop us. You got the job son!"- from Jetstream Sam dlc
Your understanding of lyrics are on a another level! 🤯
Correction, you can quite literally guess the whole end-game just from a single song. I'm baffled...
I spent ten years breaking lyrics down that is definnnnnitely my forte 😂
@@MarcoMeatball I can confidently tell 🤣
The final boss kind of has 2 songs because you technically fight him twice.
-The first song being "Collective Consciousness"
-The second is "It has to be this Way"
Both songs are absolute bangers
We need a MGR stream now
I highly suggest you listen to Red Sun from MGR next. I'd love to hear you pick apart the lyrics of that song as well!
