The soundtrack was clearly meant to explain his story and personality through music. You don't have to know his backstory if you didn't play the game, but if you take a look at his design and compare with the song, you get the gist of whatever you need to know about him. Confident, calm, capable to unleash his power in a split second (which is symbolized by a switch from calm verse into chorus). Capcom gave Casey Edwards some clear instructions when commisioning him to write Vergil's theme. Calmer verses are switched around with furious choruses, it's not just a heavy metal banger from beginning to end.
@@masterexploder9668 One thing that sticks with me is that no matter how powerful and potent Vergil is, he's still CLEARLY suffering and doesn't know how to deal with it. And I don't mean that in a demeaning way, we all of us have our... "demons" that linger throughout our lives. Adulthood is not only NOT a cure-all, it often amplifies. This man wasn't only broken and miserable to begin with, he was stuck in hell for a few decades. The fact that he can function at all is a testament to his will, his mother and brother's love, and damn that last scene with Nero. *LOVE* as sappy and stupid as it can appear sometimes is the only thing that's going to save any of us. Even Vergil. "DON'T YOU SAY IT"
@@wren7195@You and the guy below have me laughing through my tears. Can't hear this song without getting fvcked up in the best and worst of ways. You put the essence of Virgil beautifully. And you're 100% right about adulthood amplifying unresolved trauma, making it harder by the day to work through.
One of the best Devil May Cry songs out there. Be on a lookout for Casey Edwards' comment on your video as he loves music breakdowns of Bury the Light.
@@mikeclark7026 honest personal opinion i find Devil Trigger the slightest bit better but i get that i love Bury the Light dont get me wrong but i find myself enjoying Devil trigger just as much if not more
Bury the light: Theme of Vergil, a human/demon hybrid who abandoned his humanity Lyrics: deeply humanizing and sad Devil trigger: Theme of Nero a human/demon hybrid who embraces his humanity Lyrics: talk about how sometimes it’s ok to embrace the demon within and go sicko mode.
Devils Never Cry to me is a reflection of Bury the Light. While BTL is about Vergil abandoning his humanity and how much he has suffered, DNC is about Dante choosing to embrace his humanity, no matter how much it might hurt, and how it makes him stronger.
the fact that u got so much of vergil's story right just by examining his song, tells me 1: how good u are at ur job and 2: how well the song is written
Yes cassy talks about it in the deep dive stream he did on the song that a lot of the lyrics he gave Victor we're very flat in a sense so Victor took that and added his own transitions on the notes that cassy never even thought of
It still fits Vergil's character too, i mean Vergil's name was changed to Nelo Angelo then he came back in dmc5 to reclaim Yamato then reclaim his power and at the end of dmc5 at mission 17 he reclaimed his name as Vergil fully and unlocked his new SDT form
@@rukito-VFun fact: Nelo Angelo is a mistranslation of Nero Angelo which means Black Angel (its order is strange, usually the order is noun->adjective)
The fact that a person who "speaks" Music can perfectly decipher a character just based off of his character's theme speaks volumes about the talent of the people involved. I hope you will be able to try the games yourself, g r e a t analysis and incredibly interesting, subscribed!
vergil's one of those characters that has grown so large in popularity he's literally used in some cases as the textbook example of how to create a true Rival. you can see his influence on characters like jetstream sam in metal gear rising as a example. and you know what? i freaking dig it.
He's popular because he's such a fantastic rival. A very good foil to Dante... and he evolves as Dante does to continue to mirror him and act as a ... lol... motivator. I think his existence in an interactive medium was used very well. I think it's interesting to compare him in (I''m ignoring Nelo Angelo) 2 vs 5. In 2, he's responsible for Dante overcoming his own weaknesses. Dante's used to coasting through life on his devil blood, resenting it but using it to get by. And then his brother shows up with the same natural advantage that he actually trained... and wipes the floor with him. Just absolutely crushes him into a paste. Until Dante takes himself seriously and acknowledges that he can't change his nature, he's just going to get stomped on by this guy who might as well be a stranger to him. And in 5 sure he kinda stomps on Dante again but that's not really off his own power. His devil half has inherited power that doesn't belong to him. By the time Dante finishes the arc he started back in 2... Vergil's catching back up to him yknow. (And needs to stop being such a tryhard LOL) at the end they're equals. Got there different paths. Still rivals. But - I think they have a grudging respect for the other. Unclear if Dante ever liked 'V' much they don't talk a lot on screen. I hope for a 6 where we get to see them work together for a while. I think ultimately they work best as rivals but that doesn't mean they have to be Abel and Cain 24/7. Might be fun to see how a less destructive rivalry can teach them both. Curious to see Nero's arc going forward as well...
@@Schemilix wait, i thought dmc2 was set decades after 1, and even after 5, and dmc3 was set before 1? i wouldn't know, only played through half(?) of dmc1
@@possibly_ben Originally, prior to the release of DMC5, DMC2 was generally placed in the distant future of the series. IIRC, it was said in an interview and basically just a way of saying "Yeah, that mess is technically still part of the series, but we're just going to ignore it in future games because it's so far in the future." When DMC5 came around they retconned it into taking place somewhere between DMC1 and DMC4, with DMC5 being the last in the timeline as of now. Can't recall if it was placed before or after the anime though.
4:52 my man was vibing so hard he had to take off his glasses. When I first listened to this song, I just texted my friend and said “HOLY F*CK I FEEL SO ALIVE RIGHT NOW.” It’s also cool that you talk about metal screaming actually needing technique and practice. I used to be in that camp where I didn’t think it took that much practice until I watched that one viral video where an interviewer asked rock fans to do their best metal scream and most couldn’t do it, and those who could said that it took years of practice in order to scream properly and well.
I don't know if he was the first to do it, but the person I think went viral with a video like the one you mentioned is Jared Dines. He makes metal music and metal-focused humor videos, though I haven't watched him in years so he may have shifted a bit. But he did a video just going around and asking people to give their best screams, then anyone who just did one no worries he would immediately ask "how many years have you been singing/screaming?" It's a great rebuttal to the people that think the way you mention you used to.
Most of the ppl I've heard react to this are from a rap or rock background. So it's really interesting to hear someone with a opera background give their thoughts. Thanks for taking the time.
Wholly agreed. We need more folks willing to branch the genres and more tutellage for the branches. We need folks to comm and bridge this distance. Creativity isn't dead. The aspirations for it are vast becoming, though.
@@Buuuubuuu Yeah, Metal Gear Rising was a blast for my ears, what a magnificent soundtrack, but Metal Gear also has such beautiful pieces like "The Best Is Yet To Come"
Oi yah, damn. Final Fantasy still has my top placed mellow stuff, thematic stuff... but this is obscene. I grew up on Devil May Cry, grew up on Resident Evil really, but this was something fun. The music... the music has always been an attraction. Thankfully.
This song is the perfect character study of Vergil. On first glance it sounds aggressive but elegant, switching up a constant calm yet threatening aura with sudden bursts of activity - basically emulating his deceptively casual fighting style where he keeps back and waits to punish every little opening with fast attacks. But underneath this facade, there are racing thoughts and fears that keep driving him ever forward, never to rest, as you pointed out. The dive into his inner monologue after the first burst of the recurring motif reflects the calm and collected demeanor he usually shows outside combat - with the instrumental part afterwards trailing off into a thoughtful pattern that might come off as monotone if the off-beat drums, the constantly throbbing bass/guitar and the nervously jumping synth didn't keep chasing you forward. He seems unable to ever fully calm his mind, so lacking the inner stability, he tries to assert it to the outside, breaking into the chorus in which he reaffirms himself and his standing to the world. But that ends in a burst of aggression which again drops him into the introspective. This time he gets more emotional, frustrated with the turn of events. Now he deliberately escalates it into aggression, carrying this momentum into the second chorus in an attempt to make it work this time. But while he managed to carry it further, he drops to the lowest he's been and we're greeted with his deepest thoughts - which slowly begin feeding the desperation and eventually a driving aggression that carries him higher than ever before. This time he breaks through with the chorus' melody, but forgoes the original lyrics entirely this time. Instead, he brings his introspective thoughts out to this level and manages to reach an equilibrium between the two, which allows him to accept himself for who he is and bookend into the motif from the beginning. Pretty much every line in the lyrics references an aspect of his character lore as well, connecting them to give a solid picture of who Vergil is on the inside. While the games never come out and mention it straight up, this song makes his motivations very clear: He felt powerless - left to his own devices, betrayed, beaten down, used for other people's gains again and again - so he became obsessed with getting stronger, to never have to suffer that fate again. He sees himself as someone who has survived the darkest of fates time and time again under his own power, while his twin brother Dante leads a cushy life, constantly relying on help from others. In his trauma he's unable to see the strength that comes with cooperation, ever since he believed his mother abandoned him in favor of his brother when their home was attacked. Because of this, the lyrics are filled with images of helplessness, corruption, isolation, duality and the pursuit of power. In this song, he reaches an understanding of these aspects of his, reflecting his character arc throughout DMC5. And while he has hardly beaten his inner demons for good (pun intended), he has done the first step to find his own path - including allowing himself to open up to his son Nero somewhat, whose theme "Devil Trigger" is referenced coming out of the third chorus. Casey really outdid himself with this song - and it doesn't hurt that it creates a feeling of power and control as you slice your way through hordes of demons to it as well.
This song definitely means business. I incorporated it into my workouts and now I am the Storm that is Approaching hahahaha No Video Game OST has made me this MOTIVATED ever. Almost like listening to any other rock music. Sooo good!
Bury the light deep within - Embrace the darkness that's within me Cast aside, there's no coming home - No hiding in the shadows anymore We're burning chaos in the wind - When this wickedness consumes me Drifting in the ocean all alone - Nothing can save you and there's no way out They're meant to be reflections in a sense; Vergil smothers his humanity to cultivate demonic power while Nero has to accept his demonic heritage to claim his destiny.
@@sfLionheart well personally i think Devils Never Cry and Bury the Light are more Similar with Devils never cry ist about Dante accepting his Demonic side and also Remain Human at hart while Bury the Light is about Virgil accpeting his Humanaty while remain Demon at hard
Vergil is the definition of a poet warrior. He is the thorned rose around your neck. He is beautiful and deadly but he doesn't care about you. He's just reaching for the sun while feeding on your blood.
Something that I really love about your content, is that you're essentially able to use music as a literary analysis tool. And your thoughts are almost so spot on about the games/characters that certain songs are about. This is something that I find so damn cool, as a English teacher myself. Keep up the awesome content!
so for anyone who doesn't know Vergil's story allow me to summarize it. Vergil is the twin brother of Dante, the main character of DMC, and a half-demon, half-human child of the demon king Sparda and a human named Eva. One day he disappeared and demons led by Mundus, a demon his father imprisoned, attacked their home while Vergil was outside reading. Dante was saved by his mother who hid him away but was killed as she searched for Vergil right before Dante's eyes. As a result Dante would live on but shun his demon side and become a bounty hunter who only hunted demons with the blade his father gave him called Rebellion. Vergil was almost killed and seeing his home burning caused him to believe his mother and brother were dead, he would unleash his demonic power and summon his own keepsake, the Yamato, and destroy the demons. This caused him to shun his human side and yearn for power, even more so when he found out Dante was alive and believed his mother sacrificed herself for him. In DMC3 Vergil would seek out a portion of his father's power inside the Force Edge and Dante (The Player) would fight against him in the end, defeating him and causing him to go into the Demon World. While there he fought demons of Mundus for years before being captured and tortured for years eventually breaking and becoming Nelo Angelo who you would kill in DMC1, leading to DMC5 which everyone should play or watch the story. This song captures Vergil's story amazingly. He's a person who was forged in battle and forsook his humanity in order to gain nothing but power, as if he had power then he would have never lost that which he had.
Indeed. In my perspective, Vergil seems to believe that he *needs* power because achieving "absolute power" (the point where he's the most powerful being in the human and demon worlds) is the only way he can have finally have peace of mind...because at that point no one and nothing can or would even try to hurt him. The real tragedy is that in that narrow-sighted quest for power, for years he forgot what he cared about; it slipped his mind to try to use the strength he already has to preserve and be with what family he has left. At least in DMC5 he got a bit in touch with his human heart, and reflected a bit. We'll see how his "self-therapy" helped him going forward, I guess.
@@artistanthony1007 hes a general to be exact and hes the only demon that has a personality that is akin to humans although abit unforgiving he has this thing called honor and he kinda likes the human race for some reason and he thought that mundus the demon king was a ruthless asshole that has no honor and has a hard on in dominating the humans so he decided to rebel and soloed everybody and sealed off the demon king mundus and also the demon and human worlds so the demons dont get to fck with the humans and speaking of fcking as he was also stuck in the human world for sealing the demon and human worlds he met a hot ass woman named eva and they fcked and boom they had twins named dante and vergil.
Expect a comment from either Victor or Casey! They're usually very active in looking for Bury the Light reactions. As I've come to expect from your analysis, very well done! Always enjoy your content!
Something I adore about the drop at the end after drifting in the ocean all alone, it's as if you can hear him stripping away the confident aggression, the cool-headedness, and that trademark calculated smugness to reveal who he is his core of cores. A scared child, traumatized and battered, who seeks power and perfection constantly so he'll never know helpless terror again like when he lost his mother. You almost see the fearful look in his eyes and tears begin to prick through before the sounds at the end shut it back down, like a door slamming shut all of that grief back inside, forcing back that stoic and cool exterior we associate with the character. Never let your weakness show. Be strong, always, don't let them see your pain. They'll only know the Son of Sparda. They'll only know Vergil.
The part lasting from 14:45 through 16:30 is actually lifting from Nero's theme, "Devil Trigger", Nero being Vergil's son, representing how Nero is responsible for finally ending the cycle of violence between Vergil and his brother Dante, "Unearthing His Light" if you will.
That part of "born in flames, I have been blessed" is him remembering when he lost everything, when in the flames he lost his family, the people he loved and the new Vergil was born, A Vergil that had nothing but the will and goal to acquire absolute power, the power that could go against anything and everything. A power that could protect everything he loves
I love this song. Thanks you for reacting to this !! Fun fact : DMC is one of the game (along with Bayonetta) that inspired Hoyoverse to make Honkai Impact. They also very simp for Vergil to the point where you often see Vergil reference in every single of their game (mostly in Genshin Impact) and not just in-game but also in their trailer, concert and web-event as well. - Kazuha’s trailer : there’s a line when he say “the storm is coming”, a reference to “Bury The Light” - 1.9 web event : there’s a line “The storm is approaching” when you venture into the ocean, also a reference to “Bury The Light” - 2020 Genshin Concert : the drum part at the beginning in “Wrath of Monoceros Caeli” is the exactly same as the drum part at the beginning in “Bury The Light” - Ayaka/Keqing/Kazuha/Raiden/Ayato/Xingqiu are the characters with Vergil move set. in DMC fandom, people often made a joke about Vergil evading child support. which completely make sense now consider that he has so many children in Genshin Impact. XD - They even asked you in the survey “Have you ever played the following games ? ” and it had DMC on the list. (Yess, DMC collab please !!)
I would also like to add that the "Main character" in "A Post-Honkai Odyssey", a side story inside Honkai Impact, has moves and fighting style clearly inspired by Nero and the whole game mode is a lot closer to DMC than the rest of Honkai xD
The first time I heard this song, it totally blew me away. I've been a long time fan of the series and was certain that I no track could surprise me. I was happily wrong. A fantastic piece that I've listened to countless times. It was a joy and a pleasure to see just how into it you were. It was a recording, but we were enjoying it right along with you. Good work as always. 😊
fun fact. the company of this game doesnt want edwards cassidy play electric guitar . so he just used electric guitar in chorus only to sneak in. and it did work very well
There's an Acapella version on here .... I put it on repeat if I need to hyper focus on what I'm doing (usually a boss fight or grinding mindlessly in a game.... working, etc.) It really is an amazing song.
Casey Edwards packed as much referential material as he could into a nearly nine minute song because he wanted to make a piece that did the character of Vergil true justice.
Fun Fact: All the DMC 5 character themes (Bury the Light, Devil Trigger, Crimson Cloud and Subhuman) all are reactive pieces. The intro atmospheric portions play before you land a hit, and after that, the theme begins. As you land hits, taunt, start combos and gain Style, the theme builds up, but if not, it will loop the verses ("Immoral temptation" and "Inherit the Nightmare" portions for BtL). Once you reach "Apocalyptic," the drums start to kick in, drowning out the voices. It all builds to a crescendo, and once you hit that "Savage" rank, well... Then, I'm a little motivated. That beat hits _hard._ If you go even higher, to "Sick Skills" or "Smokin' Sexy Style!!!," then the title drop hits before looping back to "I am the Storm". Once the battle ends, it starts playing the last few measures of the track, before fading into nothingness. Opinion/Idea: BtL is not just Vergil's theme. I feel as if it encompasses everyone involved. Dante's awakening (the "phoenix's ash in dark" so "divine", so include Lady here for DMC3) and past (the whole bridge, so include Trish here), V's entire deal of his existence (the second verse in general) and Nero's relationship and similarities to Vergil (the whole leit motif with Devil Trigger, especially when you consider the chorus at the end maches one for one with DT's chorus; compare "Bury the Light deep withiiiiiiiin!" and "Embrace the darkness that's within me!", both lyrically and in notation).
Be sure to listen to Devil Trigger also from DMC5. Oh and the Umineko tracks ("Happiness of Marionette" (every version of it is engaging), "Scorpion Entrails", "Hello My Dream", "Mortal Stampede" & "Final Answer", Organ Minor #200 Million in C Minor). Finally giving them out.
From one Umineko fan to another, hell yeah brother. My personal favourites though are lixAxil, Aci-L, The Executioner, and Resurrected Replayer. Mainly because I like Erika, Dlanor and Bernkastel with their infinite supply of smugness.
What I love so much about this track is that not only is it both instrumentally and lyrically insanely impressive, it also stays true to the roots of the series. The more melodic part of the song is a direct reference to the theme from DMC3 "Devils Never Cry" which is a wonderful piece of music in its own right.
Casey once confirmed that while it's fun, that btl sounds like devils never cry in that one part, it was never intentional. His only INTENTIONAL referance is a devil trigger section
I really love the syncopation in the atmospheric build-up phase. It's not _just_ that something dark and quiet is brewing, but that the beats that ping your attention aren't hitting in a way you can rely on. It literally keeps you off your rhythm, apprehensive, waiting for the shoe to drop again. All my favorite Silent Hill instrumental tracks turn this dynamic into the focus of _an entire song._ I find it strangely comforting tbh. I'd describe the mood as, 'stay frosty' -- chill, but active, almost like a flow-state. The vocals in the verses are super modern, but I could absolutely see _the chorus_ fitting square into your operatic style, minus the heavy metal harshness. These big, full-throat, tidal wave notes swinging the whole song around. The opera sample you put at the start of your videos made it easy to imagine you adapting the chorus in a different register :P I'm completely with you on the last bit! The ASMR/lone guitar feels almost like it's asking for sympathy -- _from himself, maybe._ To acknowledge all that pain rather than stuffing it underneath his hunger for POWER. Maybe it's the simplicity, the key, or something more technical that's going over my head, but then when the electric guitar and the power trip comes back in, it's contextualized AGAINST the dirge, the pain. He's the biggest badass in the room, he's gonna cut a hole in the fucking planet if he has to, but he's gonna have tears streaming down his face. Not hysterical, just -- big enough to finally _acknowledge the pain._
Never heard of this song till now but HOLY MOLY!! WHAT A SONG!! Now i'm literally going to go play the DMC series. My god what have i've been missing out on. Thank you for introducing me to this masterpiece.
It's so cool that one can pretty accurately understand the character of Vergil JUST by his theme alone. It just goes to show what an amazing job Casey did with the lyrics and composition in general. I haven't checked a lot of comments here, but i think that at least someone tried explaining Vergil's lore to you, so i won't do that now. Anywho, liked hearing your take on this theme and also...i like the vibrato when you try to imitate the song. *BURY THE LIGHT OPERA COVER WHEN?* xD
I loved to see Marco getting all the vibes and enjoying this song. It motivates a lot and we can see how music can show us lots of emotions and reactions
Absolutely love music and lyrical breakdowns of songs cause it's always so interesting to contemplate what went into the process of making the songs and what certain little details can mean over the whole. This video was stellar. I'm looking forward to more!
"Bury the light deep within. Cast aside, there's no coming home. We're burning chaos in the wind, drifting in the ocean all alone!" It's a beautiful verse. It reminds me a lot of Blind Guardian's Soulforged, which is another character piece about a traumatized man doing anything to obtain power.
It's an amazing mix of orchestral, rock/metal and electronic. It also manages to achieve so much in evoking a variety of feelings that go with the games. There's the creepy/disconcerting and haunting parts, but also the powerful energetic parts that make you feel like a badass.
I never thought that watching someone's reaction to a song could be interesting but here I am. Thank you for this video, I had a great time watching it.
I could talk about this song literally all day. It's the epitome of game music and what it can do. I'm not saying no composer for a game can beat this song, since I think anything is possible, but I am saying it would need to be one hell of a job to get even close to Bury the Light let alone surpass it in both just auditory aesthetic and in representing a character so well while also straddling a line where it can be applied to SO many other characters and listeners. It is my favorite song of all time lol. A cool thing I heard was that this was going to be this composer's last song for Vergil (I haven't played the game yet so I don't know the ins and outs of why, if it's something in game or out of game, etc), so this song was like the final send off for him. It's like if an epitaph were music. A funny thing too is that people have overlayed this song to stuff Raiden Shogun related, and there are a ton of Inzuma characters who fight or have similar motives to Vergil. Even NPCs. The last bit is just a bit of fluff and has nothing to do with the song, but in a way Vergil and this song feels transient across a lot of media. It's sorta amazing.
DMC 5's music does an incredible job of relaying the personalities of each playable character in part due to the style system's entanglement with the soundtrack. When you're slaying out, the music slays out. when you're standing there menacingly about to slay out the music is building the anticipation.
Fun fact: Casey Edwards (The one who sang or the vocalist).. has been with DMC 1-5, certainly loved being the one to voice or assigned to Vergil. Which in this music Casey Edwards Thought this was his last song in the game or enterprise, So he pulled out his all. Basically this is a love letter from himself.
This is, hands down, the best reaction and analysis I've seen for Bury the Light. You do not just analyze it objectively, but you also take into consideration the meaning of the song, what makes it so relatable and motivational, and so human. Amazing video.
That note you said was a high C... IT WAS HIGHER... IT WAS ACTUALLY A HIGH D. The high note BEFORE it was a C, though, and he hit it MULTIPLE times, so that just makes it even better!
Sir, you just nailed everything about Vergil through his theme. You have the talent to analyze any song and portray the emotions/background of the specific character. You are so talented 🛐 Love from India❤
I don't remember exactly when was the first time I listened to this song, but from that forward, instantly, it became my favorite song of all time. And I'm a very eclectic guy when it come to music, so that means something. And I'm not joking when I say I've heard it ( at this point ) over 500 times, 'cause there is something about this music energy that moves me forward in life in a way that I can't explain. Especially the verse '' Descending misery, destiny chases time. Disappear into the night, lost shadows left behind. Obsessions pulling me, fading I've come to take what's mine. '', it simply get me to 180BPM in seconds, specially with Victor's outstanding vocal ( A huge pride to the Brazilian people having someone like him singing this song, I should say ). Absolute timeless masterpiece. Great reaction Marco!
I'm glad that you enjoyed Bury The Light, this song is honestly one of the best bada** songs that i've ever heard! Capcom never disappoints their Devil May Cry music
I just want to say how refreshing it is to see respect given to artists of the heavier genres that can scream (death growl, gutturals, fry screaming etc). I always see people say "oh anyone can scream, I can scream if I want to!" but they don't *understand* what screaming actually is and how HARD it is to do well and safely. Great work as always Marco - even though I'm very late on this one. I would be very curious to know your thoughts on a song by Tallah - Overconfidence. They have a video here on RUclips (the one-take video, not MV) and what Justin can do with his voice in one take is really cool!
17:54 man I couldn't hear it at first but those sustained notes made it click... Truly incredible how you tied it together, I can hear a connection I never would have expected!
Hearing you describe this song is actually a big pick me up from a hard weak. I feel the joy you have for listening to this song. I just don't know how to explain it as well as you do
Deeply insightful and comprehensive breakdown as always, Marco! I particularly appreciated your focus on the vocals, since the vast majority of other analyses I've listened to of Bury the Light have been (understandably!) much more preoccupied with the complex instrumentation going on here. Your comparison to Verdi at the end there in terms of super-intense, brassy and angry male vocal lines in arias was one I hadn't thought of before, but I'm kicking myself for missing it now! I'd love to hear you and Mr. Borba talk through the vocal side of things at some point; that would be a fascinating conversation. Cheers!
Oh I see, so my todays rabbit hole of youtube recommendations is a guy with a great imagination vibing to video game soundtracks. Yeah, I think I have a time... who needs sleep anyways.
I love how you feel all the songs you review. I like you get taken up by the music flow and you have a great selection of songs. Always a treat to watch you in those vids and i always like the bits with your singing, you are a great singer and would have loved to hear more of you.
DMC5 has amazing character pieces in it's character theme songs. They really tell a story about each main character. A youtuber named Sadwich expanded their storytelling by adding pieces of ingame cutscenes and dialogs as a background for each of the four character themes. And I highly recommend to check them out - you can easily find them by searching "DMC5 lyric video sadwich" on youtube (there are two versions of devil trigger lyric video, obviously check one labeled Full Version).
i watched a bunch of different reactions to this track its cool how different people focus on different things of the track, it just shows the depth of it. I absolutely love the synth sounds in this track i think they fit so nicely between everything else and sort of " complete " it.. and the synths are not what you'd think when you think about this track (or when you first hear it)
Listening to these with you is always fun! Man this song rocks and you made me realize quite a few things I hadn't heard before. Amazing. Thanks Marco!
I would have guessed you had played not only DMC5, but all the others as well. I was honestly shocked at how much you derived from analyzing the song. It has given me an even greater appreciation for Victor Boba and for this song too, now I'm motivated!
I agree with the "Most replayed:" The whole 'disappear into the night' section might be the most incredible part of this incredible song. Going into that insane music section after, I can just see Vergil drawing the Yamato and pointing it at Dante as the world shatters around them.
To me, this song has this cool feeling that encapsulates Vergil perfectly. You have the low, rumbling powerful sounds at the front and a tense, anxious sound above it and it almost sounds like an alarm is ringing. Signifying that now that Vergil has appeared everything you've faced until now has been child's play and Vergil is now the number one threat in play in the whole situation.
I’m really ready for you to share your thoughts on Dante’s song, Subhuman, with us. This one tells Virgil’s story well, and hints that he still has love for his family and brother in the tender middle. Subhuman Is a testament to Dante’s silent rage he’s hidden behind his smirk for years. Hope ya get around to it. Love what you do and your seemingly on the spot analysis. Quite beautiful.
I saw this video and stopped everything I was doing to watch it. I've been looking forward to this and it didn't disappoint! Thanks so much for uploading!
One source for video game music that might be worth looking into is the truly amazing sound track to Max Anarchy. Songs like "Testin' me", "Gotta get the Cash", and "Find You" are shockingly detailed in their establishing of character and attitude. On the level of the Guilty Gear Strive character sound tracks even, which is high praise. Also I love the details on the technical things (the techniques used to sing here) you include in your videos.
NOW THAT IS MOTIVATION AT IT'S FINEST. The power over flowing with this man is immense and someone finally gets what my song means so stay motivated marco and continue to be the demon of song that you are

"Clear sense of confident aggression" is literally Vergil's whole MO.
Motivated agression
Adulthood is not only NOT a cure-all, it often amplifies.

vergil's one of those characters that has grown so large in popularity he's literally used in some cases as the textbook example of how to create a true Rival. you can see his influence on characters like jetstream sam in metal gear rising as a example. and you know what? i freaking dig it.

Best analysis I've ever seen of the song. I feel like Casey almost understands Vergil's character better than the writers at Capcom, lol.

Thanks Jake! I think I take it for granted tbh. I really appreciate that 🥰
so for anyone who doesn't know Vergil's story allow me to summarize it.

Victor borba is an incredible singer and Casey has outdone himself with this piece.
This theme fits vergil very well, it also tells his story.

- 2020 Genshin Concert : the drum part at the beginning in “Wrath of Monoceros Caeli” is the exactly same as the drum part at the beginning in “Bury The Light”
- Ayaka/Keqing/Kazuha/Raiden/Ayato/Xingqiu are the characters with Vergil move set. in DMC fandom, people often made a joke about Vergil evading child support. which completely make sense now consider that he has so many children in Genshin Impact. XD
- They even asked you in the survey “Have you ever played the following games ? ” and it had DMC on the list. (Yess, DMC collab please !!)
There’s a wholeass cover of bury the light about evading child support. It’s called Bury the Guilt.
Also look up one of Honkai's characters, Goushinnso Memento. So many of Honkai's characters have DMC movements
I would also like to add that the "Main character" in "A Post-Honkai Odyssey", a side story inside Honkai Impact, has moves and fighting style clearly inspired by Nero and the whole game mode is a lot closer to DMC than the rest of Honkai xD

It really is an amazing song.
One of the best original songs in any video game. Very hyped for this reaction!
Casey Edwards packed as much referential material as he could into a nearly nine minute song because he wanted to make a piece that did the character of Vergil true justice.
Fun Fact:
All the DMC 5 character themes (Bury the Light, Devil Trigger, Crimson Cloud and Subhuman) all are reactive pieces.
Opinion/Idea:
BtL is not just Vergil's theme.
Wow cool. Excited to listen to the others
no. everyones theme is specifically about them
Be sure to listen to Devil Trigger also from DMC5.

I'd like to add my personal favourite Umineko OST, Infant Queen Bee.
The opera sample you put at the start of your videos made it easy to imagine you adapting the chorus in a different register :P
I'm completely with you on the last bit!
Love this :)

Victor Borba is singer, not Casey Edwards
Sorry kind of a mistake.
As an addendum, if you want to hear another song Casey and Victor worked on, I absolutely recommend Vacant Surrender.
Dayummmmm
high c? how can a note be an artifical lemon-flavoured drink
High D, it's apparently as powerful as the sun~
Sir, you just nailed everything about Vergil through his theme. You have the talent to analyze any song and portray the emotions/background of the specific character. You are so talented 🛐
Love from India❤
Thank you! :)
2:26 you could even say he's... motivated.
17:54 man I couldn't hear it at first but those sustained notes made it click... Truly incredible how you tied it together, I can hear a connection I never would have expected!
Hearing you describe this song is actually a big pick me up from a hard weak. I feel the joy you have for listening to this song. I just don't know how to explain it as well as you do
"Destiny chasing time" is one of my favourite lines ever.
“*You should motivate yourself NOW*”
-Vergil
Watching you, seeing this passion, man you're one of us.
Cheers!
Glad you enjoyed it!!!
Oh I see, so my todays rabbit hole of youtube recommendations is a guy with a great imagination vibing to video game soundtracks.
Yeah, I think I have a time... who needs sleep anyways.
:) hi
I love how you feel all the songs you review. I like you get taken up by the music flow and you have a great selection of songs. Always a treat to watch you in those vids and i always like the bits with your singing, you are a great singer and would have loved to hear more of you.
Thank you so much 🥰
Marco headbanging to this song is the entire video highlight. That song is lit 🔥🔥
I am simple. I see Bury the Light, I like. Thank you.
I really like how the song builds in intensity like a storm's brewing.
You could say "a storm is approaching..."
the anticipation on that solo is masterful. the whole song is a religion at this point
So glad you did this reaction
DMC5 has amazing character pieces in it's character theme songs.
They really tell a story about each main character.
A youtuber named Sadwich expanded their storytelling by adding pieces of ingame cutscenes and dialogs as a background for each of the four character themes. And I highly recommend to check them out - you can easily find them by searching "DMC5 lyric video sadwich" on youtube (there are two versions of devil trigger lyric video, obviously check one labeled Full Version).
When those final vocals hit. My god. The emotions i feel every time i hear it. It just comes together so perfectly
It's genuinely Amazing on both Composer side and Analytic side how much character you can put into music. MOTIVATION!
If there's one thing I learned in all my years of band from middle school into college?
"Breath is ALWAYS the answer"
DMC series are well know for their legendary music. Great to hear a pro input on the topic of more metal stuff, very interesting thank you.
Your Nessun Dorma clip at the beginning floored me. Is there a way we can see your performance in full????
I second this. 😀
Sure at 30k
@@MarcoMeatball wow, im so excited!!
@@MarcoMeatball Where?
@@Worn_Guide damn. I forgot. I’ll do it tomorrow. ❤️
4:09 Motivation. Say it. The feeling of motivation. Just say it. Say the line.
i watched a bunch of different reactions to this track its cool how different people focus on different things of the track, it just shows the depth of it.
I love that this song is so well-written that a VTuber is able to come in, absolutely MEME THE HELL out of it, and it still sounds awesome.
:D
I would have guessed you had played not only DMC5, but all the others as well. I was honestly shocked at how much you derived from analyzing the song. It has given me an even greater appreciation for Victor Boba and for this song too, now I'm motivated!
It's so cool that the way you feel/vibe with the music underlines your classical influence :)
Thanks! I love this song
Looking forward to him reacting to Devil May Cry 3's Divinity Statue, Vergil 2, and Vergil 3.
Divine Hate is also a banger~
Watching this man vibing so hard is a joy for the eyes
I agree with the "Most replayed:" The whole 'disappear into the night' section might be the most incredible part of this incredible song. Going into that insane music section after, I can just see Vergil drawing the Yamato and pointing it at Dante as the world shatters around them.
This man, REALLY understands, what is going on in Vergils mind. He talks and interprets him, as if he was real.
And I love that! ^^
Subhuman
Is a testament to Dante’s silent rage he’s hidden behind his smirk for years. Hope ya get around to it. Love what you do and your seemingly on the spot analysis. Quite beautiful.
On my list! Also at the halfway point in my dmc5 playthrough you can see next month :)
YOOOO I NEVER THOUGHT YOU'D EVER REACT TO THIS ONE!!!! GREAT JOB
Love your breakdown and details about the song! Thank you for helping me understand it better.
My pleasure!
The power over flowing with this man is immense and someone finally gets what my song means so stay motivated marco and continue to be the demon of song that you are
Thank YOU!
Are you feeling *motivated* yet?
I play this song whenever I need motivation..
No way, Femboy Wendy?!
Hahahah dude at 5.50 when you said "a demon of death" you sounded like an old man who saw the reaper and he's trying to notify anyone nearby to call the cops
Loved the breakdown! It was really interesting.
