So, fun thing about the Lotus Eaters! In the original text, Lotus was a kind of plant that basically made the person who ate it feel euphoria and just a general sense of ease. But took away a person's memories and care for the world outside of the lotus. It's essentially a magical drug that some theorize could have even been marijuana(?), something that would be completely addicting to PTSD riddled veterans of the Trojan war. In the original, it was Odysseus' men who ate the lotus and had to be dragged away from the fruits and back to the ship. Here, the Lotus Eaters are these little guys who were originally other little spirits from a different area who ate lotus and turned into the Lotus Eaters.

The ending to this animatic always throws reactors off, lmao. They usually think it's got to do with the Lotus Eaters, but it's just the animator transitioning into the next song

You can always tell by how someone reacts to Polites just how much this show is gonna mess with them.
I love this song _so much_ it's so bright, light, HAPPY. You can _hear_ the smile in Polites' voice the entire time
So many fans make this the "pacifist" song, but that's not what Polites is trying to say
This song starts with Polites having noticed Odysseus' stress/tension & telling him he doesnt have to exist in "warrior mode 24/7"
Then he sing about _how_ Odysseus can ease his stress/start to heal "lower your guard/look for the good in life"
The song also ENDS with Polites reiterating that Odysseus is carrying _so much guilt_ but he DOESNT HAVE TO
He can start to heal, he can start to relax
This is a song about Polites trying to help his best friend heal through the traumas of war!
yesss!! polites isn't just... sunshine no evil in the whole world guy. he's balanced and is the only one coping healthily with the war 😭

So many of us had no knowledge of greek mythology (or at least very little) when we started, yet we loved it anyways. I always appreciate the message of the song.
Fr epic got me into mythology
In mythology Lotus fruit basically had a strong sedative effect and eating it basically made you want to abandon all responsibilities and just lay around snacking on it all day
So basically like a weed brownie except a fruit.

Interesting note, the lotus eaters are also sung by the same performer as Odysseus (Jorge Rivera-Herrans, the creator of Epic). Very talented musician! He also preforms another side character later with a very different vocal quality but i wont spoil it :)
Polites Protection Squad! Welcome! So glad to see more people love Polites he deserves all the love. He's Odysseus' BEST friend and Eurylochus close friend too. I'm so glad you pointed out how Ody only repeated the line at the end as a way to show he's starting to open up to the idea of open arms and if anyone notice that was also the only time he smiled in this video too at the end before the flash warning lol

Some important context to odysseuss and polites relationship that isnt super well established is that they have been best friends since childhood. If yo usant more context to that you can listen to the cut song "Your light" it doesnt have spoilers or anything, just more context to thefe relstionship
a couple of things about the video i love.
1) the lil fuzzy creatures (lotus eaters) are traditionally just some dudes who eat lotus and never leave the island.
2) the lotus eaters are happily named Winions by fans of Epic, and the fans are also affectionately nicknamed Winions. which i think is cute.
3) at the end where Polites throws the Apple to Oddysius is a reference to a tradition that if someone throws you and apple and you catch it its a proposal and acceptance.
4) polites is the most precious bean and that cuddle with all the winion pile is adorable.
5) the art for the characters in most, including this animation are based on the singers features irl, and they do a pretty great job of catching their irl looks.
Jennifer, I want to tell you that as a musician and composer I’ve watched a bunch of people reacting to this project and vibing with how they’ve broken down each song because I have my own approach from my artistic perspective, but even as a singer whose sung for the past 30+ years, you’ve been breaking down these songs in such a way that has opened my eyes to my own singing! I really appreciate your commentary and your approach to reactions/reviews. Subscribing now!

I know I'm late to the party so to speak on this but to me this just makes me think its 2 different ways of coping with PTSD, "Nothing can be as bad as what I've gone through already!" and " I've got to be on guard in case anything else is out to get me!" in how ody and poli approach things that is.

I find it fascinating how the war mindset that Odysseus is in (which Polites refers to in the beginning of the song) is showcased in Odysseus reaction to his meeting the Lotus Eaters. They say “welcome!”. Odysseus draws his sword
