I've been watching several videos on channel about the British royals. I am so glad and overwhelmed to see you guys make a video about my own country's royals. Especially the situation my country is in right now (Feb 3 2021), I want people to see Myanmar has a rich, cultural history that is long forgotten during this uncertain future.

In every sad part of Southeast Asian history, there's something in common. Foreign, particularly the westerners that meddled with countries and the rest is an awful history... Now, western countries act as if we owe them for the assistances they give as a form of "humanity" where in fact they destroyed most of our lands, exploited our raw materials, mocked our traditions and killed many of our ancestors. I am holding no grudge but I just don't want the west to take pride on their colonizations and meddling with other countries.

Did u know that these last king and queens were half siblings like all their ancestors.…?The king must be the son of the previous king and the queen must be the princess, daughter of the king. Incest or inbreeding was an honorable thing among the royals. Their father king Mindon had 67 wives and 110 children .Their so called grandparents king Thibaw and queen supayalat were very far down the line of succession . She and her mother were pure evil. They massacred all the heirs , their wife’s and their young children in one night, which is above 100 in number just to be king and queen while lower Burma was already invaded by the British . It was the bloodiest night ever in history . Yeah so basically the British saved Burma from such evil queen. The king was just a puppet. Once the British left , history repeats and it was a living hell to this day. Did they tell u that? Nope!

This part of history i really hate, colonizing a place/country then suddenly leave without any reconsideration of rebuilding it first. Rebuilding it like as it was before they took over the place. People of the olds really never think or see it through.

It’s a little surprising to me that very little was mentioned about the 1878 massacre of 100+ royals engineered by the queen in order to get Thibaw on the throne. Obviously this doesn’t fit very well into the narrative the video was emphasizing but it’s a pretty shocking, significant chapter in the royal family history.

And it wasn't all that long ago - just a few generations. I went down quite the Wikipedia rabbit trail learning about this!

I love this channel but today I just finished watching this beautiful documentary about this Country Myanmar. I love learning history about different Countries but today my heart goes to this Country. I just love is so heart warming, love those too Cousins because even though they have different points of view and they decent from royal family they have such a beautiful mind set. I think they’re ancestors are so proud of them. Thank you so much for this beautiful documentaries. History is such a big treasure of every Country and human beings.

The People of Myanmar must know their History of Humilation when their King was deposed by the British in 1885. Never again must Myanmar ever to allow a Foreign Army to Conquer their Country. History of Burma's Last King; King Thibaw must be made known in Myanmar and the World. Never should Asian Countries be Colonized. This is Lesson for All Asians. We may Forgive the Powers of The Past but We Must Never Never Never Forget. The 21st Century is The Asian Century.
not every Asians has same mindset, money can change everything
The granddaughter of our last King passed away two years ago. There are some direct decedents of our Kings and Queens in Myanmar. We all gathered together twice a year in Yangon and Mandalay on the occasion of alms donation to monks for the late King Mindon (father of last King) and King Thibaw until COVID-19 period. We are not so sure to have this kind of chance under this devasted country situation.
We really do need more programs like this, not that they generally tend to reach those not already interested; though here, the internett has managed to make itself much more of a positive influence than seems typical in modernity.
The initial letters are Small and Pallid, so hard to read about this interesting subject. I hope that the Kingdom of Myanmar/Burma may be Restored, and this gentleman may be crowned King !

As a mixed thai I'm sorry to hear about this. I have learnt the thai history about how Burma invaded thailand during the ayutthaya era since a very young age but thought that till now there were still the descendents holding some sort of power in the country but really didn't expect that younger generations are forgetting their royals who once ruled the country.

It makes perfect sense why the Burmese people remember Mindon as their last king, as he valiantly defended Burma against Britain. In contrast, Theebaw, his son, made no significant contributions, leading to his being forgotten. This historical pattern resonates with Puyi, the last ruler of China, who later became a puppet of Japanese imperialism, further illustrating the impact of leadership on a nation's memory and legacy.
I live near Ratnagiri its costal (Kokan ) region in Maharashtra . most people in the region know Burma was lived in Kokan region. on of his daughter married to local man from kokan. As far I know I think her surname was sawant. 10:06 I have visited this palace now turned into museum. during his end British govt not provided proper funds for the king.
compare to british royals in the high castle Myanmar Queen Devi looks more humble down to earth and connected to people.

It is a sad story, the British fought to keep their monarchy alive while they destroy and demolish all other monarchies who do follow their diktats! Hypocrisy at its height!

A good documentary but rather sanitised. The truth of the matter is that while the British did some bad things, Thibaw Min had this coming for him too. At the part where students were asked about their king, most mentioned Mindon Min, and that is for a good reason. Thibaw Min's ascension was via a bloody succession massacre of pretenders to the throne. If the king loved humanity, this bloody massacre should have been avoided. In the end his evil deed caught up with him, and the poor Burmese paid for it. Royalty is bad concept. People over one person should be the way for the world

Please do a documentaryon the Last King of Singhale (Sri Lanka).. who was also exiled by the British Imperialists to Mauritius.. who died a sad death there. His remains lie in a lonely forgotten tomb somewhere in Mauritius.
If you speak about the last king of Kandy, you are wrong. He wasn't exiled to Mauritius, but to India, at the Fort of Vellore in present-day Tamil Nadu. His samadhi (cenotaph) too is there, as he died there. In the Fort of Vellore also still stand the manor where he and his family have been in arrest, called localy the "Kandy Raja Aranmane" or "Kandy King's Palace".

Uh….No. By any human measure, in fact, colonialism brought far more “to” the colonized rhan it took “from” them….Whether it was schools, advanced medicine, courts of law, infrastructure, etc., studies show that in almost every case, there was a measurable increase in lifespan, in education-for BOTH sexes-and eradication of common, often fatal, diseases among “colonized” ppl….
No doubt that colonized countries def “lost” a lot in culture, but their “gains” were also usually enormous ….”Bad” colonizations would be Communist takeovers-where living standards almost always DROPPED , and also Islamic invasions-which, in addition to all of the material losses, women were sent back into the stone ages….

when I tell other monarchists that colonialism is the main reason why so many monarchies no longer exists, they scoff at me, but here is living proof of what I am saying. Where are the Burmese today? where are the Tamils? what about the Indian Maharajahs? all gone. For a country that is supposed to be seen as the quintessential standard for monarchism, Britain's actions are the direct cause why so many republics exists today and the countries in question are often worse off for it.

Fascinating documentary. I'm a but concerned about the other folks in the comments who appear to be actual monarchists though. Having your country subjugated by another and losing thousands of years of history and tradition is painful, but monarchy is not the way forward. Devi has the right approach for modern times.

I feel bad for the royal family, for not being able to return the remains of King Thibaw. What a bunch of dinks not allowing the repatriation of his remains. Sure is taking long enough for that to happen. Man are Davi and Soe Win on opposite sides, that's good though.
So the last king and his 3 queens were all half siblings and the rest of their other siblings, the died king’s children born to other mothers were killed by the queens’ mother. That’s horrible history that could be forgotten!

How does or did a family become the monarchy of a country? I don‘t know about the Burmese Royal family, but normally it is by defeating ones opposition or enemies. As is stated in the film, „they realised that there was a second force in the region, the British East India Company“. This family had built their empire reaching from Bhutan to present day Myanmar by conquering their neighbours, and now they in turn were overwehlmed by the British. I am not saying that what the British did is right or justified, but „Royal Blood“ is normally not innocent either.

My Grandmother from this family.. kidnapped by Indian soldier..he married her ..and migrated to India in 1948.
She died 10 yrs back ..Her children,and grand children is in Kadalmad,Wayanad,Kerala, India.

People forget that the Burmese kings were expansionists who liked invading and ransacking their neighbors. They weren't peaceful kings who kept to themselves. Somehow the Thais evaded colonialism even with a king as their head of state.
