Oh my god. This method of cooking buckwheat is simply amazing. My husband always complained that no matter what he did it turned out mushy and overcooked. I showed him your video and he decided to give it another shot. Well he was so happy that it was perfect. We thank you for your grandma’s recipe and will thanks her every time we eat it. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing
I can not thank you enough for sharing this method!! This is my second attempt and it turned out PERFECT! The first time using a different method, it turned into a mushy porridge and I was devastated. Thank you again, this is a game changer! God Bless 😊💗
This worked for me, I'm eating it now! I had the same trouble mentioned below, that it tends to turn out mushy. Happened to have a Japanese thermal pot, which is an insulated thing to cook in. This seemed like a perfect job for thermal pot, and it was! SO, boil as you said for five minutes, put cooking pot in the insulated shell, and go do some errands. This is so nice for forgetful old guy like me because it's impossible to BURN anything, since there's no heater in the pot. Came out very nice and just like in the pictures, and I'm now eating with a fried egg and some quickly improvised gravy on top. It's good with butter, it's very good with gravy!!! It's good for bachelors, because leftovers don't seem to spoil, and it reheats nicely!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! My Russian teacher made kasha for us at one of the student parties, and it was the best thing I have ever tasted. She gave me a small bag of buckwheat to take home and prepare for myself, but I've been afraid to try. I'm going to try to recreate her recipe tonight, каша с луками и грибами! 😊
I always make buckwheat like rice, 2/1 water/bw, add ghee and salt, bring to boil, simmer 20 min. It’s ok. I can’t wait to try your Grandma’s way of cooking it! It looks sooo good! Thank you!
Natashenka, thank you so much for this amazing and really easy way of cooking buckwheat. You are truly a treasure. Special thanks to your grandma. God Bless.

Wow I’m so looking forward to trying this! I’ve never tried to cook or taste buckwheat but wanted to add it to our diets bc it’s a completely protein. (And all its other health benefits too). Thank you for sharing your grandma’s recipe!
I have struggled for year cooking buckwheat. This has been the best instructions ever. I followed your clear recipe and I must say my buckwheat was delicious, thank you👏👏👏
This is a great way to cook to save fuel, better for environment, economical, and good to know in case of emergencies. Buckwheat is nutritious and always good to have on hand as emergency food. Thank you for sharing, I will try it :)
I use a slightly wet kitchen towel at the final process to cover it, and it works also like a charm. I do this with Basmati rice as well, the result is just awesome.
I'm trying buckwheat for the first time. This was such an easy recipe to follow. I made it as a hot cereal with prune puree, apples, and ground flaxseed. Thank you for posting it.
Thank you sooo much for making this video! I moved to a country where it is eaten regularly and I just made it myself for the first time using your video. Its so delicious 😊❤️
Thank you so much for you video! Just bought some buckwheat and will cook it for the first time ever. I knew Russians and Poles had this nutrient-strong dish called Kasha. Thx to you I now know how-to!
Thank you. Yes we call it kasha.😊 Enjoy! One tip though, if your buckwheat doesn't say toasted, you need to toast it for couple minutes on dry skillet, it will taste better with slightly nutty flavor. Good luck!🤗😍
I just tried out your recipe for my first time ever cooking buckwheat - it turned out great! Thank you for sharing. It is delicious and I am so surprised how much just 1 cup makes. I seemed enough to feed an entire family! :D
I always come back to your videos when I forget how to make buckwheat 😅, and it reminds me of family when my mom used to cook back in the days. Thank you for keeping it short and simple. ❤
I'm looking to add buckwheat to our regular diet and looking for how to prepare it. This is the first video I watched and for sure I am going to do this to cook it because my children will think I am bizarre. Thanks for sharing!
I have always made mine as a dinner with carrot, onion and a bit a ground beef or ground pork with a bay leaf or two added during boiling. I do really like your grandmothers method of only boiling for 5 minutes and wrapping in a blanket. I get that works super well.
Excellent recipe. I came up with something interesting: knowing that soaking beans in salted water makes the skin more elastic and therefore, able to absorb more water, I soaked 1 cup of kasha in salted water overnight, drained it, then microwaved for 4 minutes. Lo and behold -- very fluffy and large grains. Highly recommended.
I´m sure this is all very good advice. But I just poure 1 part of buckwheat and 2 parts of water in a bowl, put a lid on and cook it in the microwave or the rice cooker for 20 minutes. Nothing more, and I love it.
I'm half russian and always called it greishka. Kasha for the oatmeal porages but I also thought babushka was my grandma's name! 😆 Thanks for this recipe, will try it soon!
My husband loves making your buckwheat recipe it turns out amazing every time, by any chance do you have a video or recipes for buckwheat porridge I would really appreciate it especially since it’s so nutritious and low carb. Thanks in advance and warm greetings from Canada

I have heard so many good things about Kasha, but the world of buck wheat is new to me. The nutrient value have me convinced. Im just wondering if you can describe the flavour or maybe a comparison to another food. I still have a family to convince!! am
I love it as a side. But sometimes I like it with some mushroom gravy or I throw in some bacon and parsley or grate a bit of Parmesan cheese if it the end of the week and I try and use up what’s left in my fridge or pantry. I love all you can do with it.
So.. wait.. buckwheat is not a grain ? That was actually new for me ! Thank you for the presentation. It's funny how my own ancestors (Netherlands) would have eaten breakfast consisting of buckwheat or rye bread, porridge (similar to kasha) or pancakes until it got replaced with cheap and plentiful supplies of Polish, Russian and Baltic wheat from the 17th century onwards (in the countryside buckwheat and rye remained the norm until the early 20th century).
Thank you a lot! I did it and it tasted fantastic! Much love from Turkey, hope you had some recipefor Kvass to as it impossible to find it here in Turkey…
Hello Nastassjacancook! I am very fond of buckwheat flour dish! And I have never eaten buckwheat flour food in your country (^ ^) I was hungry when I saw your videos! Thank you for a wonderful movie (^ ^)
In Asia, we have many recipes for Porridge which is extremely easy to cook, very nutritious and feeds many people in the house. For one with buckwheat, I can cook it together with barley, types of rice, black sesame seeds and wolf berry all proportionated to my liking and everything into a pot of water. After boiling for about 20 minutes, cover and let it simmer while I go take a shower or do something else and viola, meal is ready. I can add coriander or thyme for garnish and sesame oil for that extra flavour. Just a 400g of all that grains mixed together turns into a pot that feeds about 4.
Like if you watch this while eating buckwheat lmao i love cooking something, and when eating, i watch videos of how other people cook it, so that i learn every tiny detail i can to cook every recipe to perfection. Now, at the age of just 23 i've learned SO MUCH just from such youtube channels like this one :)
Americans eat this with pure honey Pour some honey on, mix it around & mmm boy is it good! I haven't had it since I lived in New York. Chip made it for me. She said it was a complete food. Whatever that means? Now I know how to make it. Thanks
WHAAAAAT? Honey, ideed! There's plenty of honey around here, but I'm saying this should be a savory food, goes well with onions, mushrooms (cooked in with it, or in a gravy). Gravy in any case! Around here (for hundreds of miles around) we have this controversy about "grits", which might be called "kasha" in another country. Anyway, some people put milk and sugar on their hominy grits porridge, but nobody likes them. It's just something everyone has heard of but nobody has SEEN. The minimum "gravy" is grease from fried bacon or something. Mmmmmmaybe if you cooked this into a mushy gruel like oatmeal, you could put something sweet on it?
I'm trying to get back to what my grandparents ate when they came to America. I have a few recipes from the old country but not some of the things I'm interested in. What about a little syrup, or cooking it with some fried onion and boil it in chicken broth. I bought roasted buckwheat by mistake and I'm looking or ideas on how to cook it. I'm thinking your recipe will work too. Thanks for the video

Hi from Ireland. I have never eaten buckwheat in my entire life. This looks very delicious. I will try cooking this dish and eat it. How long can packed dry buckwheat stay fresh on shelves?
I want to make this buckwheat, should I buy toasted or not toasted buckwheat? Here in the USA we call it buckwheat groats. We had buckwheat pancakes when I was a child!
For this method you will need definitely toasted one. Or you can toast buckwheat on dry hot skillet until darkened in color. I made my this morning. Yum. Thank you 🌹
It can be done without a Blanket. Just cover the pot with foil, so the steam does not escape and also with towel. I used 2 cups of buckwheat and 3 cups of water. If your serving is 1 cup, use 1.5 of water. You have to keep it covered longer if you are not using Blanket method 😉
Gamma learned from her Grandma, it was pass along for Centuries. Is a Family Secret Recipe being share. If it work for 1,000 years why change it. Thank you Naty.
My mother used the blanket method to save bottled propane gas. I just boil it until it is nearly ready on low flame, so it doesn't run away, thoroughly mix with butter, boil a bit more, and then let it sit on the stove for a few minutes to cool down slightly. The pot I use is thick and has a good heat capacity. All kashas are good with butter and milk. I've eaten a liquid milk "soup" in a hospital, but haven't cooked it myself, because I cook rice or oats if I have milk. I love drinking milk with it. Mother thought adding milk to it was foreign and wrong.
Subscribed! Love your humor and there are so few Russian/Eastern European cooking channels on youtube so this is great. Would you consider making a beef kasha recipe? Also, how well do you think kasha reheats? I've been thinking of making a large batch that I could freeze/keep in the fridge and eat throughout the week since it seems like a nutritious meal that wouldn't go soggy or weird. Great video! :)
Thank you so much.🤗 It reheats perfectly in the microwave or you can reheat in on the skillet with a little bit of butter. I never tried freezing it, since we finish it fast no matter how big of a batch I make.🤗❤
I buy it pre toasted. Toasted until it gets a little bit of color and make sure it is completely cool before you cook it. Check out Eastern European markets, they usually sell toasted one. And yes, it's a little bit darker in color. 😊
@@NastassjaCanCook Very interesting thank you. You almost don't find wholegrain buckwheat here and I remember that some say it contains something that is not so good for human - smth that makes the red colour of it and that can make you sun sensitive. That's why I didn't get the same result, because yours is with hull but also pre-roasted. Anyway, I would love to try it with hull, hope to find some. Best wishes
@@dukenegju The buckwheat used in this video is NOT with the hull. It is roasted buckwheat, which gives it the dark color. The hull is not edible unless you grind the buckwheat into a flour. I have all the different forms of buckwheat in my pantry & used all of them, so I speak from experience. You won't be able to find buckwheat with the hull in the supermarket or Russian stores.
Roasted, unroasted, groats, sprout...etc. I'm new to Buckwheat and love what I've heard about it but what kind of buckwheat and in which for should I ask for in my local whole food store or online? Can anybody guide me please?

Great story! Thank you for sharing. 👍😊
I never tried freezing it, since we finish it fast no matter how big of a batch I make.🤗❤
How long do you toast the buckwheat, if you do toast it? Do you buy it pre toasted? It looks pretty brown in the video
I buy it pre toasted. Toasted until it gets a little bit of color and make sure it is completely cool before you cook it. Check out Eastern European markets, they usually sell toasted one. And yes, it's a little bit darker in color. 😊
Thanks for the video. If you have buckwheat left over, can you heat it up again to eat it later in the day? Or just eat it cold?
You can heat it up, most definitely. 😊
Great thank you! Is this whole grain (with the hull) buckwheat? It looks darker then the one I usually find in the supermarket.
Yes, with hull and roasted.
Best wishes
@@dukenegju Thank you😊Best wishes to you too. Do you have any Russian stores in your area? They would have it.👍
@@NastassjaCanCook Oh that's a great idea! Thank you too lovely for your wishes!

The buckwheat used in this video is NOT with the hull.
Can anybody guide me please?
it doesnt matter. roasted are much better tasting in my humble opinion.
Unroasted is fine you just have to toast it a little in the pot before adding the water. If you buy it roasted that’s ok too. Cook it like rice.
If it is available in india. ..nd it is useful for rheumatoid arthritis please suggest. ..
Of course, it is good for Rheumatoid arthritis as it doesn't have Gluten and rich in nutrients and low glycemic index.
