As someone who loves two of these three movies (haven't actually watched Hot Rod, but it is on my list and I do think I will like it), I think the answer to the question about why we care so much about reviews is twofold. Time and oversaturation.
There is so much content out there these days that it has become stressful trying to keep up. Star Wars and Marvel under Disney are a great example. They went from something fun you could dedicate a quick few hours to watch and have some fun to research assignments requiring days of focus to understand what is going on. There are so many movies and so many TV shows and if you miss even an episode you can be left with no idea what is going on, who the characters we're supposed to care about even are, or why something has happened. Certain industries are taking our time for granted and we've kind of reached a point where we've become sick of them wasting it. So we tend to want to find a reason to kick that time waste aside and let ourselves focus on something else in its place.
And that's where the reviews come in. I find that the only time a review actually convinces to watch or not watch something I already kind of wanted to go that way on that thing to begin with. It was something that piqued my interest/disinterest a little and I just needed that final push to comitt to that action of watching or refusing to watch. I can't recall a review ever convincing me to watch something I already didn't want to or putting me fully off of watching something I thought I would enjoy.
Tron Legacy is definitely a comfort movie for me. I enjoyed Tron when I watched as a kid, but everything about Legacy sold itself to me upon release. I have rewatched it about a dozen times. Which is another problem in and of itself. I rewatch things I know I love instead of taking a risk with something new, even when it's something I think I might love. I will rewatch 17 seasons of Stargate instead of binging my way through a quick 8-13 season show that never even got renewed for a second season and could be consumed entirely in a single sitting. Something I might have actually really wanted to watch for some time. It's safer to go with something I know I will enjoy every second of than to waste it on something new.
That has only gotten worse as I've gotten older. And the oversaturation decision making has made things even worse again. Do I watch a movie? A tv show? Play a game? Read a book? Or a fanfic? Or play with my 3D printer? Or write something? Replay? Rewatch? Reread? In the end, we've got so much to choose from that we just become paralysed by that choice. So anything that helps to brush aside some of those options can be helpful. And that's what middling reviews can do. Tip us just over the edge that we were already standing on, be that in the direction of watch or avoid.

I hated Jumanji and I finished the movie. Not my type of comedy, the action was horrible, and too many plot holes. Aguirre, the Wrath of God is a better alternative because of how difficult it was to film it. Small German film company in the middle of a jungle with one of the most infamous actors of all time

Absolutely love "Hot Rod". It's definitely the Coolest of Beans. Ian McShane is also great in it. Keep it up!

Oh absolutely, it truly never gets old-even just making this video I was cracking up the whole time. I appreciate the comment!

I never cared whether some reviewer, or movie critic, or a youtuber, endorses a movie or not, but I care for the reasons they bring up why they have their specific opinion. Based on these reasons, I can form my own opinion. I think it is a common misconception that people blindly follow the advice of their chosen reviewers. I look at reviews to get the pros and cons to then weigh them myself. This is also why I think positive and negative review bombing does not do all that much, because one-sided reviews just add very little if anything to the pros and cons that I consider.

I agree with you about not blindly following a reviewers recommendation although sometimes they can be helpful. When I watch someone's content about a movie, I like to watch the movie and then have them fill in what they liked/disliked. I enjoy going into a movie blind because I hate getting spoiled about what is going to happen halfway through the movie because of the description let alone a review

That’s a really refreshing perspective-I’m glad there are those out there that don’t immediately disregard a movie based off the reviews like I do haha

    I'd recommend The Paperboy (2012).
It kept me at the edge of my seat throughout its run-time, and that's definitely saying something as I usually fall asleep in the first 15 minutes of watching a movie these days.
But this movie made me laugh, left me shocked, I didn't know what was going to happen in the next scene, I was immersed and left feeling fully entertained.

I definitely need to add that one to my list! I’m a big fan of Matthew McConaughey, so I gotta check that out

The Edge (1997) is underated. Anthony Hopkins and Alex Baldwin were great

I’ve never heard of that one before, but that looks super interesting! It sounds somewhat similar to The Revenant, and I loved that movie, so I gotta check that out!
