So I Flew With Ryanair...

  • Throughout 2019 and 2020, I took a couple flights with Europe's largest low-cost carrier, through their hub in Dublin.
However, I never actually posted any of those since I focus more on Canadian airlines here, and I figured people might not be as interested.
By popular demand on my channel member Discord though (see below), here it is - a Ryanair trip report from Dublin, Ireland, to Rzeszów, Poland!

Been on so many Ryanair flights. You get what you pay for with them. Ultimately it's a bus on wings and gets you where you need to be at a super low cost so as much as I'd love to knock them, I've had flights cheaper than a train from my hometown to London. Will be flying with them once again in a couple of weeks

Completely agree. I used to fly a lot between Italy and Spain, I used AirEuropa and was really happy about it, but after Ryanair restarted operations after Covid, I made the switch. It's way less premium, but it cuts off 70% of the cost, at the price of a slight inconvenience (worst sits, worst terminals or longer walks in the same terminal, sometimes boarding with the 737 built-in stairs). I saved hundreds of euros flying the same airplane type.

Ryanair is absolutely fine. It's cheap 'n cheerful and doesn't pretend to be anything else. You get what you pay for. I'm pretty sure that most of the online hate is based on received wisdom rather than actual experience. As someone who's flown the world in all cabin classes over the last 50 years, I'll also point out that the Ryanair 'hard landing' meme is absolute nonsense.

There is perhaps some truth in it since the landing speed of the 737 is higher than comparable aircraft like the A320. They operate 2400+ flights per day, so some of those landings are bound to be on the rougher side.
Still, a firm landing is a safe landing. Safety is more important than passenger comfort.

Then there's is the problem on the new MAX 200 planes in which a cabin crew literally has to sit in the MIDDLE of the cabin facing passengers because of the extra emergency exits but we're not going to talk about that.

To be honest I always found Ryanair was the way to go in Europe. They fly to many destinations that otherwise wouldn’t be reachable (e.g. Mykonos in October 2020 was only served from Ryanair as it comes to western Germany). Sure you don’t get anything fancy, there are delays and some weird customers but nothing I haven’t seen on full service carriers. Fun Fact: Their seats are actually more spacious than those on eurowings - the daughter of Lufthansa

Many shared accommodation in Dublin ( expensive) with colleagues who worked opposite shifts so to cut costs.

      "that get you"

I agree, I was changing my ticket to another flight and they wanted to charge me 100 EUR for not checking in a day earlier. I was like but I did check in yesterday for my old ticket that you are swapping for another flight.
I had to give the lady a side eye look like you can't be serious. She realized how silly that was considering she's the one doing the ticket swap and figured a way to waive it.

You`re right about the extras. The increasing luggage charges and the £ 55 pound they now charge to check in at the airport (I don`t know any other airline that charges for this) can add a lot to the basic ticket especially for families going on their annual holiday. Having said that I have flown with them several times and have never had a problem with the flights themselves.

My three Ryanair flights have been, well, not great. One was fine, one had a rather messy cabin, and one was two hours late, and because we booked it last-minute due to a canceled flight it cost over 250€ per person. And flights over two hours should be avoided due to the miserable legroom.

@Graham Cook I have been a frequent business and leisure traveller for the past 40 years.
To go anywhere from the UK into the rest of Europe on the national carriers back in the 1980/90's generally cost £450 unless yo styayed a Saturday night.
Those fare levels have been history since Ryanair (and Easyjet to be fair) came along.
My colleagues at work snobbishly laughed at me flying to Sweden on Ryanair for £30 while they flew SAS/BA for 10 to 15 times as much.
It was not long before the management copped onto that!
I have been able to afford to fly my family over the years to many places that without Ryanairs' presence in the market, I would not have been able to.
You obviously do not like O'Leary, so what, he is outspoken and says things that many governments do not like to hear, but the proof is n the passenger numbers.

About 10 years ago, I paid £16 for a return flight from Birmingham to Marseille with Ryanair. That was about £10 cheaper than the first flight I ever took in 1973. It included priority boarding. The bloke sat next to me had paid £10 (without priority). The flight was fine, and on time both ways. If you follow the Ryanair rules on luggage, seats, etc., and don't expect Emirates or Qatar 1st class service, you'll have nothing to worry about. There was a woman at Malaga who tried to take in the cabin a grossly over-loaded 'cabin' bag that weighed 19 kg and did not remotely fit in the bag measurer. She went ballistic when the Ryanair staff told her it needed to go in the hold. The staff were patient, professional, and put up with a lot of swearing and shouting from that stupid ....... person (I won't use word I'm thinking of!)

I have flown FR on many occasions on the route BVA (Paris) to Dublin . It must be said the prices are generally unbeatable and the departures and arrivals are within a reasonable time frame . I found that the staff were friendly and courteous . My biggest annoyance is the actual booking online . Incessant options and 'clicks' , overwhelming . This should be really tidied up . Essentially you get what you pay for though paying 300-400€ with a legacy carrier for the same flight as opposed to 45€ return with FR is a no brainer . In fact Ryanair has become the default national carrier of many European countries .

I am 6 ft and there is enough leg room but what I dislike is the non recling seats.not because I like to fully recline the seat and annoy the person behing, but if the seasts are to be fixed, and I understand why they are, the angle of the seat back could be a bit more relaxed. I find it a little too upright. Some others have fixed seats but have a few more degrees of angled recline and feel better.
