  • Deep, achy back pain can usually be tied back to this one muscle: The quadratus luborum. This is a muscle that attaches to the ribs, the spine, and the hip so it's a big culprit in a lot of back issues.
Learn how to first release this muscle, and then stretch it (the order is important) to get feeling better fast!

This appears to be exactly the source of my pain. I'm 65, retired and love to golf. Unfortunately & apparently, my playing and/or practicing 5-6 days a week may have triggered the discomfort I am having. So severe in fact, I had a difficult time walking for a couple of days. My question is, how many reps of these stretches do you recommend? Thanks in advance. New sub for you.

I use a roller to target “my” spot. Little gentler than the tennis ball to start off with. It is a terrible area to relax, especially since I’ve had spinal fusion L5-S1. It does affect my buttock, piriformis, adductors
Massage helps or kneeling /sitting on my knees and trying to move my arm, sideways to the floor targets it also

    Hi Dr,
I like all exercises, except laying on tennis ball. One famous physical therapist on you tube said that laying or putting weight on the rolled foam or tennis ball can damage the nerve. I dare not do that. Thank you.

It all depends on what muscle you are speaking of:) the piriformis is one to be careful of because of where the nerve lies. Not all nerves will be irritated by working the soft tissue:

I swear by your “in bed” stretches at bedtime. I feel like I have spasms in the QL sometimes. I’ll give this a try!

What if strengthening glutes by performing prone leg raise hip extension helps a lot for that low back pain and discomfort but also make my right hip just in front a bit of irritation. (It’s my older injury when I over stretch hip flexors) Do you think it's because I over squeeze my glutes while trying to lift my leg?

Dr. Kristie, instead of using a tennis ball, would a foam roller be more effective and comfortable? A tennis ball can damage the soft tissue?
