Why do we hike?

  • Why do we hike? There are a lot of downsides to hiking. It's dirty, it's uncomfortable, it's hard. It can take you out of your comfort zone and sometimes, it can be dangerous. So why do it?
It's grounding. It strips away all of the noise of our everyday lives and reminds you what is really important. No bills to pay or alarm clock going off. You need to worry about water, food and shelter. All of the thoughts running through your mind, keeping you awake at night are gone; it's just what is right in front of you and how you are going to deal with that.
Hiking can be so rewarding. You find out what you are made of. You overcome obstacles that you never thought you could overcome. And sometimes, you just stop and stare in awe at the scenery around you, knowing that all your hard work paid off.
We hike because we love it. We hike because it is good for our souls. We hike to feel alive.

This video was so inspiring. As someone who is in a family of 6. It is hard to get all of us to hike. My parents had a heart attack at the Grand Canyon. My mom fell 30 feet down on the side of a mountain on a summit hike with me. My brother went ahead and got hurt without us even knowing. My sister threw up on the Manitou Incline in Colorado. We get cuts, scrapes, burns, bruises, get emotions, feel like we can't go anymore. There is so much that happens on the trail that you just never forget. Why do we do this? TO BE ALIVE AND FEEL ALIVE!!! Thank you for such an inspiring video that just had a lot of meaning. Keep on EXPLORING!!

I just found your youtube site, and absolutely love it. I appreciate how you take the time to explain things that most hikers want to know, like gps coordinates, time spent in and out, and level of difficulty. I moved to Utah 4 years ago, and have become obsessed with hiking. Being 67 years old, I'm limited, but I did manage Angel's landing, all the way to the top, once. And lots of other trails in southern Utah, like Red Mountain trail, and the Vortex, two of my favorites. The more videos of yours I watch, the more inspired I am to get out there and hike. Thanks for making such awesome videos.

I recently found your channel and have been gradually absorbing a large amount of your content. To be brief, it’s outstanding! As someone who has dabbled in multi-media photography/video presentations, I recognize the hard work and learning curve behind these videos. You both have an ability to inspire, educate (with a practicality I appreciate) and entertain (love your humor Jerry and the interaction between you and Tina - a great example). Especially inspire! I am a day hiker (photography enthusiast) who often lugs photo equipment miles to get a shot or two. I realize that, at age 63 and with a fear of heights (like Angel’s Landing), I am very unlikely to experience some of the awesome sights you do. But I also see you hiking a wide variety of trails that anyone with some degree of fitness and common sense can accomplish. You have inspired me to continue to look for opportunities like these and stretch my limits (and maybe backpack one of these days :)). You have quality content that I really value! I am rooting for a bigger audience for you. Very impressed!

I spent about an hour last night masking myself walking across some words for a 5 second clip....and I do that for comments like this. Glad you like the content and I'm especially happy you find it inspiring for your own adventures. As for backpacking....try it. It changed our lives.

I find that the things that test us are the most worthwhile in the end. Great job on helping folks to understand why hikers truly love getting outside and experiencing adversity to obtain peace.

Glad you're inspired! That was the point of this video. And you have no idea. I'm currently sorting through over 10 hours of clips (probably 300+) to put together a year end video. My advice is to save the clips you think you may use every time you make a video so at the end of the year you aren't sorting through them all at once. That saved me weeks this year.
