I hear you on the autofocus. . .BUT, I was thinking the other day. . .My Dad must have been a genius, or one of the greatest photographers of all-time because I've been going through his collection of shots of me and my brother as little kids, and he had a large portfolio of us with very good shots IN FOCUS. And he had a camera with NO BURST MODE! I just think we've become obsessed with cameras being able to rattle off 8, 10 or 12 perfect shots per second with perfect focus. There's so much to like about this new camera and system. . .and its future. . .I think, for the money, it's still a very good way to go mirrorless and full-frame at the same time. Nice review. . .
Hi everyone. I just got my Z6 few days ago, traded for D750. Here are my initial thoughts. I had 4 lenses, 3 of them were Tamron. 35 1.8vc, 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 both G1, and Sigma 85 1.4 art. Before purchasing Z6, I tried to find out online which lenses will work on it(with FTZ adapter of course). Tamron 35 1.8vc was confirmed by many that doesn't work (AF), Sigma definitely works, but no one really said anything about G1 lenses. Finally I tried them out myself. 24-70 2.8 g1 works "ok" for stills, but for video no, after few seconds of recording it stops recording by itself, and since video mode is important to me , this Tamron lens is a no go. Tamron 70-200 2.8 works also "ok" in stills and video mode. Nevertheless I decided to trade all Tamron lenses for Nikon lenses.Z mount 50 1.8s is a beauty, nice and fast, 24-70 f4s, small, compact, and sharp. Still waiting for 20 1.8g and 35 1.8g to arrive. Have to say that taking shots with Sigma 85 1.4 art at 1.4 is so easy with Z6(1/60 of a second) , on D750 with the same lens was quite difficult to get sharp photos at 1.4 even with shutter speeds twice the focal length. (of course talking about indoor environment and iso 100). Do I miss d750. Yes and no. Does D750 focuses faster YES, but there is a lot of room to improve AF on Z6 through firmware updates. Do I miss second card slot, NO. I used it for overflow anyways. But D750 feels so good and beefy in hands, that is something I will really miss. Otherwise, looking forward to start video shooting more seriously (my kids mainly) and that is the main reason why i got Z6 in first place (hybrid shooting). Moza air 2 is also here, and now comes the most difficult part, trying to make everything work , learning about video editing and grading. Thanks for your review and thoughts about Z6. Sorry for long comment !!! I just wanted to share my initial experience with Z6. Thanks again!!!
Wonderful comment! Thanks so much for taking the time to let us know about the lenses that didn't work etc.! As you learn more please stick around and create your own videos! I'm excited to see what others make with their Z6. Cheers!
Thanks for your reply. You mentioned one big photography oriented channel in your video (name I will not mention). I used to trust their reviews and listen to their advice, but it has been a while since I realized that they are here just for $$$. There is no passion in their photography, just pure interest. I bought camera after seeing reviews from "small people" like yourself (I hope you won't take me wrong) who used their own money to purchase equipment (not sponsored). Thanks again , and hope your channel will grow fast.@@halfphild
Check with Tamron's web site for a new update list. Now, they are scheduling updates for many lenses they had no plans for up until late July 2019. The G1 lenses are getting updates to that will make a lot of owners happy. The 35mm is also scheduled but those which are not compatible with the Tap-In Console will need to be updated by a Tamron service center, for free.
I got the same problem with the Z6 with F mount lenses. And I am coming from a D500 which is a beast of Auto Focus. Then I tested the Z mount 50mm lens. Now I am getting nearly 100% sharp images with every shooting I make. I am now waiting for the 85mm Z mount. Conclusion: Native mount has definitely an edge over the adapted glass.
Thanks so much for letting me know! I'm super excited to get my hands on some native glass to test the differences! Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers
Hey Cactus, I love that idea! Next week I'm gonna try to show lots of examples of using the slow motion abilities. I'll do a very similar test like you mentioned except in single shots to see what we get. I'd also like to add the D500 to these tests. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Even if the % might be lower on z6, having the advantage of the EVF, being able to use 100% of the screen to touch single point focus, stabilization(allowing slower exposure times)makes still z6 a better focusing system then DSLR-s?
In action, you should use dynamic area mode with continuous auto-focus.. With auto ISO. its fine with me.. Im getting 80% + in focus. And also you should turn off the AE display on screen mode it helps really good.
You have helped me alot. O was really disappointed with my Nikon D750 because it fails to focus and continuous auto-focus has stopped working with my all sigma primes.
So the take away message is what - use the dynamic af large area, which you seem to have the best result. Also I don't see the reason of using auto exposure when using high burst mode unless your subject is walking in and out of shadows. Mirrorless cameras and some DSLR allow you to use histogram preview before you take the shot, so most of the time no need for camera to meter the light again when you are in continuous high.
You're right! Until the firmware is updated in May with improved AF algorithms, stay away from single point and give wide large and dynamic area more attention. I shot with Manual settings except for auto ISO but only because that's how I'd normally approach a candid experience outdoors where I'm not in control of the lighting. Here, for example, auto ISO took care of my concerns with the lighting changing with the weather we were having at the time. If it cleared up a bit I wouldn't need to make any adjustments nor would the overall exposure of say half of the frames be too bright or too dark. I agree with you though, make use of the built in tools we've got these days and shoot manual. Limit how much is left up to the camera. This time around the lighting was changing just often enough for me to go into auto ISO (even though the way I edited the video doesn't show much change). Thanks so much for your help, for watching and for commenting!
What I find interesting is that even if mirrorless is supposed to be better in AF, at least theoretically, with the exception of maybe Sony (especially the A9), they are still not there with the best of the DSLR.
Super interesting. As soon as I can I will be comparing the new AF updates to both the D750 and D500. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Cheers
@@ryanhostudio Yes, the AF is changed a lot and now on par with D850 in good light and faster more accurate in poor light. The AF modes and burst changed, plus Nearest Subject Priority added like the D850, and in burst, now it focuses and meters every frame and almost eliminates blackout. AF down to -6ev!! One important factor we discovered, every S lens released so far is better optically than any F mount. The 24-70 f/4 is sharper corner to corner than either the F mount G or E 2.8 24-70 and the S mount 2.8 is the best mid zoom of any brand. The little 50mm 1.8 is the sharpness lens I have ever used. So waiting on the 85 1.8 S next month and the 70-200 2.8 S is scheduled to be announced this fall should beat them all.
The big issue not mentioned was that the Z6 misses (looking at the display in the video) were mostly contiguous. That meant that, while shooting, once focus is missed it takes several shots before it locks on again. So the reliability of focus for a give shot drops even further than the hit rate. If it were hitting 50% but locking on every other shot, you could be more confident of getting the shot you need, but hitting even at 80% but missing five in a row, means you are often going to miss the shot you need. Of course I do not know what your setting was for shutter priority. Was it favoring focus or shutter?
Thanks Dennis, you're right. I also have it favoring shutter, not focus. I'm getting more confident with it but you're right. Update to this coming soon using the auto area af.
Thanks for the test. I'm wondering if it's fair to judge the performance of the camera using an adapted lens (I don't think that's what you're doing, but others are). It does appear to confirm the performance of an adapted lens utilized in that manner. It's not an important shooting criteria to me since I rarely shoot continuous out of sheer laziness (I don't want to confirm sharpness on that many images). I enjoyed the video. Keep 'em rollin'.
LOL. Agreed. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! That type of use isn't my cup of tea usually either. And you're right about the adapted glass. I'm guessing native lenses yield at least slightly better results. For me this really started from the claim Tony and Chelsea made about the brand false advertising 12fps, that it really is only capable of more like 2.5 focused images per second, which wasn't my findings. But I tend to ramble and I hoped to at least convey that the camera, with my lenses, did okay, maybe better than I expected, but still doesn't yet provide me the confidence of older bodies... yet. ;) It's a great camera though and I'm still learning so much about it. Thanks so much again for stopping by. Cheers!
Hi, yeah I need to reshoot this video with all the updates we know have. I don't own my D750's anymore if that says anything. But I could do a similar competition between the Z6 and Z6ii. I'll see what I can do. Thanks for the suggestion. Cheers, Phillip
The May feature update is supposed to have an entirely new AF algorithm in addition to Eye-AF that all the beta testers are raving about. I never shoot burst with my D850 and mostly shoot AF-s single point and with my subjects, such as portraits the number of missed focus shots is lower than the D850, mostly due, I presume, to the fact that lens fine tuning is not needed on the Z6 so I am very happy with the AF for what I shoot but it is not as good in low light or for acting as a D850. I did not expect it or any mirrorless to be. One of the most loved features is the excellent manual focus support with accurate focus peaking. It is a joy to use my old mf lenses such as the 50 1.2. and macro. The biggest surprise was seeing usable 22k ISO images that beat out the D5 all the way up to 102k ISO. The release of the new AF system should spark a lot more interest in these great cameras by those on the fence.
Extremely valid point. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! You can be sure I'll be sharing my test results once the firmware is released! Cheers!
YES! I went from the D7000 to the D750 and I couldn't have been happier. It's an incredible power house of IQ, features, and professional ease of use. I'm glad you liked the video thanks so much for watching and commenting! Cheers!
Proud owner of my D750, great video. It’s exactly these kind of tests that not many RUclips channels dare to make. Just came upon your channel, subscribed.... cheers....keep making such honest videos.
Hi Abhijith, I can't thank you enough! I often wonder if these little videos are worth making. Your comments really help me with the confidence I need to make them. I'll try to keep these coming for you guys. Cheers!
Hey Burton, Thanks! I think I've heard that before. I'm super excited to get my hands on some native glass. Currently my plan is to grab the 24-70 f/4. As soon as I do I will put that to the test! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
So a guy makes his wife walk around in the freezing snow so he can test his camera.....A Photographer For Life!.....Yeah! The bell is rung but RUclips did not tell me you uploaded, found it from nosmallcreator Facebook. I still don't have a Nikon, but still watching, cause you're just interesting! But I am getting an Atomos (Shinobi) next week so we will have a tiny bit of camera stuff relationship! Hey, I like the backgrounds and that blurry full frame wonder lens background thing going on! Classy!
Hey Randy, I was wondering if my subs weren't getting notified... Thanks for letting me know that. I'll double check it was slated to notify subs on publish. This one I had scheduled so I might have messed that up LOL. Dude I love that you've stuck with me all this time. I'm there with ya. I don't have a Sony but I'm super interested in what you create and the very simple story telling you do. It's honestly a breath of fresh air these days. This platform is so saturated with the kinda crap I produce. You keep it real for us. Well you better make a ton of videos about your atomos when you get it! ;) Thanks man.
@@halfphild Thanks, but I have a GH5, so manual focus for me which is why I need the Shinobi cause it's so hard to focus in the daylight. I'm expecting big things from that little monitor! Catch you on the flip flop!
Oh that's right my friend, sorry I forgot. The GH5 has incredible reviews. I think Cody's rockin' one of those suckers too. I understand the manual focus life all too well coming from Nikon video lol. My entire 30 day vlog challenge was shot manually focusing. Once I got used to the lens and understood the length I was vlogging from I was ok. But to be fair I shot mostly wide and at f/4 or lower. I hear ya on the monitor! The focus peaking is a huge help! I use a very old ninja 2. I really like the false color, and off camera recording! I don't know much about your monitor I'll have to look into it. Catch ya next time!
Super fun video to put together. I gotta get Sara in more. She had a lot of fun shooting. I really dig the 1000 photo test idea. What's the subject? Same sorta thing, just a person moving back and forth? An event with various subjects? This was a good test for me because it was a very real scenario, something I'd do or currently do. I'd love to see it in high speed action (rally racing...) Maybe next time I'll get Sara to run for the shots. Thanks man.
My first cam was a used D800 and 2 months ago ive got a D750 and there some major improvments with the autofocus. To be short: D750 is still amazing for the 1100 Euro. Used sometimes around 700 Euro. Thanks a lot.
Thank you for the video. Question. In the second test with your kids, were you also shooting in burst mode or were you in single shot AFC/AFS? Thank you!
Hi Scott, I was also in burst mode. Tony and Chelsea claimed numbers in burst mode that simply weren't true so I was only testing high extended mode. Others have asked me to test out continuous single shot mode so I will do that very soon. I wanted to wait for the firmware on the 16th. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Cheers
@@halfphild Okay, I knew that's what you were testing in the first part, but it wasn't clear in the second, so I wanted to be sure. a 60% accuracy with single point in AFS or AFC is horrible, so I wanted to confirm. I usually shoot wildlife with my G9 (more reach and faster), but I just got the Z6 and am going to a falconry this weekend. I'll obviously bring my G9, but I want to test the Z6 as well. I will be sticking with the burst low or burst high (to test it out) and we'll see. I'm not that great at tracking flying hawks (more leaves and grass), but I'm going to try. I won't even try with single point as it's hard enough tracking the birds. Keeping a single point on them while tracking with a long zoom is nearly impossible for me. I'll try wide-area large as you got more of a hit rate with that.
Right on. Also one thing you will probably find is the evf blackout in burst unless you're in high extended. Once you go into to the slower burst speeds you deal with blackout for some reason. In 12fps there's a little jittery feel but not a full blackout. Would mind coming back and letting us know how your shoot went? Thanks again so much.
@@halfphild I will. After doing research, the reason there's no blackout in high extended is because in place of the blackout you're seeing a quick, 1-second view of the previous frame you took. It's NOT live and every video that I've seen talk about this says stay away from high extended with fast moving subjects you need to track as you'll lose them as what you're seeing in between are stills of the previous picture you took. My G9 doesn't have any blackout and has a 120 refresh rate in the EVF, so that's why it's my go to for fast shooting scenarios.
Hit rate on manual focus lenses (i.e. adapted M-mount lenses) is astronomically higher. That's the reason I got the Z6 :) It's basically the best Leica M camera replacement at the moment.
Hi Sotto! I've been using the Z6 as my go to now and the D750 as a backup in a lot of cases. If I had to choose one it'd be the Z6 at this point. But they're both incredible cameras.
@@halfphild Hi Phil thanks for ur answer. I have a d750. Great stills but I m disappointed with the videos. I m thinking to take a Z6 but lenses are so expensive. Whitc lenses do u use?
You're right, they are expensive! I use just the 50 & 35 primes from the z line. But I kept a bunch of my f mount lenses as well and they work great with the Z6. But they're not as clean and sharp as the native lenses. Both the 35 & 50 are really sharp. I'd start with the 50 if I had to choose just one.
I was wondering if you did this test after installing the AF software update that Nikon posted for Z6’s and Z7 to correct the issue with the AF. If you have not installed the software update can you re do the same test after installing it to compare the test results before and after software update. Thanks by the way thanks for you informative videos.
Hi Carlos, No these tests were done without any firmware updates on the body. Yes, I will ABSOLUTELY be doing the same type of tests with the fimeware updates - this is a good setup for before an after the updates. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I really appreciate it!
The 2.001 firmware not only changed the AF system but also the low light capability for AF down to -6ev and changed the default for electronic first curtain which makes it not only quieter(already very quiet) but eliminates the shutter shock at low shutter speed. One change that was really welcome was both focus and exposure is not updated every frame in high-speed burst and blackout time almost eliminated. AF speed and tracking are on par or better than the D850. For BIF or in low light, AF is faster. Mirrorless will always be more accurate focusing since the detection is on the sensor itself and not dependent on mechanical alignment so no fine-tuning of lenses is required. Liveview is always better than OVF mode in DSLR and the Z cameras are an upgrade over LiveView. I take a lot less frame in a session or event since the EVF displays the actual exposure triad appearance in the EVF, and because the actual frame 100% is seen so composition in the EVF is precisely what the file holds 2.0 makes it act like a different camera, fast accurate and no longer jumps to the background when focus is lost. That was a problem with Ver1.0, if the subject was tracked and focus was lost, the focus would jump to the background and it was not so quick getting it back on the subject. Now, in 2.0 it is defaulting to Nearest Subject Priority as the D850 has. If focus is lost, it stays at the same focal plane or nearest subject so it is a breeze to keep the focus point on the subject even if something gets in the way or the subject disappears momentarily. That is a great improvement.
If you would have read the manual you would know that the camera can do 5,5fps in continious tracking AF mode! 12 fps is without focus and exposure change. But yeah, many youtubers dont need manuals at all.
The manual is wrong now, version 2.0 focuses and meters every frame and almost no blackout in High Burst. The manual was valid for version 1. There are a lot of changes to how AF works in 2.0 such as adding the Nearest Subject Priority from the D850 so it does not jump to the background if focus is missed now.
@Phillip Flores - A couple things I observed, First why not put a native 50mm on each camera, shot the z6 at high speed not extended (Because it's not necessary in this comparison). Secondly in looking at your actual test, the Z6 got you 47 in focus shots while the 750 got you 20 in focus shots (Cup half full or half empty) lastly how the hell did you miss focus on the very first shot you took with the 750...lol
LOL Thanks for pointing that out UX! I was hoping no one would notice. haha *sigh You win some you lose some. I have no idea how I missed that first shot lol. Anyway to your other point, I totally agree with the native lens thoughts and if I had one, I'd go for it. That test makes a lot of sense of course. I think it's important to emphasis that the main reason I shot 12fps was to prove to myself and to others hopefully that the camera was capable of much more than 2.5 frames in focus per second. This is something Tony & Chelsea said that caught me off guard. Considering it's running off the out of the box firmware and did this well says a lot in my opinion and I think it'll do even better with the updates. That said, I think with time I'll be more positive and more confident with the camera. You can imagine, I've been shooting with the D750 for years - what confidence comes from knowing exactly how the tool will perform... Dude, thanks so much for watching and commenting. I'll throw together a follow up to this with yours and others' thoughts in mind. Cheers!
@@halfphild I have a Z6, D750, and a D850. I'll run the exact test that you ran using native 50mm 1.8 lenses on both and let you know what the results are. It will be interesting to see how they do. The only thing different I'll do is try and shoot them at the same FPS.
Clearly the z series cameras are not for action or fast moving object shooting. I have the Z6, I am using it for weddings and it works perfectly. It has all the features what pro wedding cameras should have for wedding photography. If I want to shoot some sports or wild life, I just grab my d850 and that would do the job better than any other DSLR. That is mean the z6 is bad camera? No, by any mean it just not meant to be a sports camera.
Agreed. The Z6 is an incredible camera overall! I think you're right. The D850 or the D500 are suited a little better for higher speed subjects. Great camera though. Thanks for your comment! cheers
@@halfphild From our large Nikon forum the consensus among the sports and BIF shooters who use D5 and D850 is that Z6 version 2.0 firmware equals or betters the D850 in good light and is much better than the D850 in poor light. Big differences. So those hiking long distances for the wildlife or BIF are loving the Z6 now. I sold my D850 a few months ago after being confident the Z6 does what I need very well but is the better travel and event camera due to the low light AF and excellent low light IQ. I kept the D800 because its resale value is a lot lower than my appreciation of its studio IQ. With the funds from the D850 sale, I will add a Z7 or Z8 so I can generate the large files some clients insist on. For more event, ballet, theater, and portraiture the Z6 has easily enough resolution. After using the Z cameras the first time it was hard to go back to the OVF. The loud shutter of the D850 caused it to be a poor choice even for dress rehearsals. Only recently I have started video shoots and learning my way through DaVinci Resolve 16 and really enjoying it.
@@halfphild I did the whole switch to Sony thing 2 years ago. I never fell in love with Sony as much as I did Nikon. I might move back, but it's super expensive to switch systems. I've subbed, keep making good vids!
Losmatix, I totally understand! It is a pain in the butt to move brands. I would say to not give up on Sony's stuff just yet. I know picking up Nikon is one of the easier brands to learn etc. but Sony has some really great tech in the game and I also need to emphasize how it's much more important that we don't get too caught up in the gear so that we get out and create more often with whatever we already own. Thanks so much for your comments and for subbing! I'll do my best to keep the videos coming. Cheers!
@@halfphild agreed Philip - great video thanks. I'm hoping Nikon produce a RP sized camera and some lighter f2.8 pancakes to go on the smaller gimbals.
It's just the test I was looking for :-) I was wondering if the announced performances of the Z6 were plausible (almost those of the D5) and you just answered. The existing tests don't talk about it, don't show them or just give the specifications, at least in your video it's clear. Let's hope Nikon will improve this point soon. I'll follow your videos on the subject, but I think the Z6 will make a good companion for my D600 ... Thank you for your excellent work and all my wishes of success in the future. Greetings from Paris.
Be interested to see if the autofocus can keep track of a person walking towards the camera with other people in front and behind the person walking. Possible tables or bushes in the foreground to really challenge the autofocus. If it can do this I will get this camera. Please test. Thanks in advance.
Hi Summer, I think it performs well. I'll look into doing this test myself and see. Remember that if it detects more than one face, it simply gives you the option to switch faces. I'll see what it does when the original face is blocked and then found again. Cheers!
The D750 wins in the pro photography world for me because it'll write to dual SD cards. Redundancy is a pro trademark. Just my opinion. They're both amazing cameras. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!!!
The AF is more accurate on the Z cameras compared to any DSLR although using LiveView on a DSLR gets pretty close. None of your lenses need fine-tuning on Mirrorless. If you are doing studio portraits tethering wirelessly is faster with the Z cameras, Having the more robust build and far more reliable card system is another benefit of the Z. A single XQD is far more reliable than 2 or more SD cards because the bus system on the latter can write corrupted data and not catch it since it is a dumb bus like old floppy disks. XQD/CFExpress uses the much more modern PCIe+ bus like used on high rel network SSD drives. They can also map out defective cells, where SD just tries to write to bad cells and does not flag the error. All cameras that are considered pro in the next few years will have XQD/CFExpress because they are the only storage system designed from day one to be suited for critical applications. SD cards were never intended to be used for critical data but are used because the socket and bus cost so little to add, less than a $1 for 2. If one uses SD, they need to use them in mirror mode but that slows down the transfers and buffer clearing.
It would be interesting to see the hit rate of the Z6 if you reduced it to the same frames per second as the D750 (which I own). But as you said you have more than twice as many images if focus with the Z^ to choose from and isn't that the reason everyone wants faster frame rates.
Agreed. But I'm still going to do an updated video of this. It's too interesting to see if there really is any difference or not. I'll do one against the D500 as well. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Cheers
All is in how you analyse the figures.....at the end the Z6 produces 47 keepers images while the D750 only 21.......but I understand the concern...no doubt. About it.
You're right. And I think with the firmware updates I'll get better numbers. With time too I'll become a lot more confident in the Z6. I'll be putting together a 1st firmware update to this video asap. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Cheers
Phillip Flores I have the Z6 too I used for portraiture and other non quick moving objects and i love it, super sharp and I love also the fact of having WYSiWYG I have more keepers and less work on post to correct exposures
Hey Alain, yeah I'm really enjoying the EVF. It'll take me some time to get used to it because you think differently when you have a screen showing you what you're going to get vs. an optical VF where I've spent time dialing in specific exposure settings and I have trained myself to trust the meter in the body. 'Letting go' of the meter in a lot of cases has been a strange experience. That evf is super accurate and I need to trust it more. I think with the AF firmware updates that confidence will start to arrive.
The buffer on the D750 seemed quite short, what sd card did you use? I have tons of sd cards and only 1 series of card writes as fast as it claims and that's the Sandisk Extreme Pro and only the 95mb/s line. My D750 goes a lot longer and buffer empties very fast and knock it down to 12bit and it basically has an endless buffer ;)
Hey Jam, thanks for commenting and watching. I only use SanDisk Extreme Pro SD cards with 300mbs speed. Here's the cards I use on Amazon: www.amazon.com/SanDisk-SDSDXPK-064G-ANCIN-Sandisk-Extreme-Pro/dp/B01MFCQVLB/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?keywords=sandisk+extreme+pro+64gb&qid=1570295924&sprefix=SanDisk&sr=8-8 I shoot in raw.
@@Tanfo77 I've heard some people mention the native lenses being faster focusing in general but I honestly think in most cases most users won't notice those small differences. I haven't seen any issues in AFC dynamic area. In this video in particular I was using the 105 f/2.8. The biggest differences I've noticed between f and s lenses is the breathing, the noise, the sharpness wide open, the lack of fringing and the price! LOL
Nope, Jay, this was prior to any firmware. Not great but decent and especially considering what T&C were claiming. This is a "before" video. I'll be performing the same kind of test with the update shortly. Thanks for commenting!
Im not having the same results with D750 on AF-C 3D...its ok, but not like this. But Z6 has updates now, Z6 is way above in auto area AF face tracking...so Im thinking about going on Z6 now...
I believe wide area has 3D tracking, just not advertised. That's why it has 100% hit rate. It would be good to see a 50 mm or 85 mm z lens vs 50mm or 85mm f lens on d750 to have a fair comparison.
Thanks for that info! I'll look into that more. Also I'll be sure to use some native glass just like you mentioned in the updated video I'm filming this week. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
@@halfphild no problem man...I just ordered a Z6 and currently own a D750.....so this video was helpful....will look out for your next video. Keep up the great content
Thanks so much man. I had an unfortunate spout of stupidity and mine is now in repair with Nikon in LA... So it might be a few till I get it back but I'll get on it when it gets back. When I tested it with my kids it seemed to do a pretty decent job finding their eyes. I've been lazy though too because I've really been wanting to put the d750 up against my d500 as well and just haven't. Both incredible cameras. Congrats on your purchase, I'm sure you'll love it. Cheers!
I’m sooo interested in buying the Z6... have the D750 today which I’m pretty happy with... as you mentioned, taking action shots of your kids playing etc works pretty OK with it! At least how I shoot, but I get pretty scared when you show me this and tell me that you get worse results and can’t trust the Z6 a 100%. I’d mainly use it for photos when I’m with my kid in the playground or whatever... so I’m suddenly not as convinced if I’d be happy with the Z6 after all. I’ve soon watched every Z6 video out there and I was sooo close ordering one. I really hope they can fix this with software updates. Long comment, sorry!
Thanks so much for your comment! I'll do another video soon with a native lens against an f mount lens to see if there's any real difference. But compared to the D750 and D500, the focus isn't as confident as fast... I dunno. I understand how you feel though. It's a great camera. No question. But if strictly photos is your thing, in my opinion you aren't gaining much by switching to this coming from the D750. At least not without the firmware and without native glass. Again, I'll test that when the firmware is released. I loved your comment, no worries! Thanks so much again! Cheers
I honestly don't know how long I'll be holding on to mine. I want it to work and I would like to believe that firmware updates will help but it's frustrating beyond belief.
apples and oranges. Why not try the Z6 in High mode, instead of extended high, gives roughly the same fps as the slower 750. Slower fps = more time for the focusing algorithms to catch up. I would also like to see this test done with a faster lens, maybe a 70-200 2.8 Good video though :-)
Hey Garry, thanks for watching and commenting! I thought about doing that, but I really wanted to verify what T&C claimed about the hit rate only being about 2.5 in focus. Cheers!
Great Nikon Z6 shoots my friend. Very nice camera. Big like from me. Keep making the awesome content Take care stay in touch please . I hope to see you again soon returning the friendship too. Stay with my strong hug, my dear friend . Have a great day:)
Well Im wondering why you didn't shoot in regular high continues mode (5 fps), not extended. Im sure you would get better results with that...and also when you shoot 14 bit it only gives you 9 fps
Found a used d750 for $800 VS a z6 for $2000+ I'm not to much into video might just go for the d750 until nikon brings out their second generation mirorless in the next 4-8 years 😂
Absolutely. Look into whether or not it has been sent in for recall work from Nikon. They'll do it all for free, including shipping. The D750s had some issues with the shutter sticking and then displaying err until the battery was removed and replaced. Mine has that issue and I'll be sending in it for the free fix asap. That's a nice price really depending on the condition and life of course. Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers
Too bad you did not do the test in mid-May since the 2.0 firmware changes the whole AF system that is improved in every way. Now, it actually beats the D850 in tracking which certainly is better than the D750. It also makes the Z6 the best low light AF Nikon. I have switched over entirely from the D850 and D800 since the Z6 focuses better than either of those in low light now. Version 1.0 firmware was a problem, the first frame in burst(I seldom use burst) was always sharp and the second was always out of focus. It was also hunting badly in low light and now focuses down to -6ev which means I don't need modeling lights if using strobes to be able to get focus in the studio. The tracking of faces is really fast now and a few well known BIF photographers have moved to the Z6 replacing their D850. Try it again, most of the reviews on RUclips never got updated. Single point is very accurate for stills, single frame because it uses Contrast only which is slower acquiring lock. It is a very useful mode for 100% accuracy with still objects. It is too slow for Hi range burst but it worked ok at 4fps. Now it tracks well in single point.
I'm sorry you didn't like it. I tested focus on 12 fps in response to T&C's video claiming only about 2fps in focus. That seemed incorrect in my test. I plan on doing this test again with the new firmware asap. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers
12fps in high extended. :) This was to see how well it did in high extended against what tony and chelsea claimed (2.5fps in focus). Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers!
This type of test is apsolutely irelevant ! And this is not the first video of testing person that is coming to camera, apsolute stupid test. I have d750, and i ordered Z6, but in my 10 year carreer, i didnt had the need to shoot someone that walks toward me so many times. Test something else :)
Thanks for watching and commenting! Please be of use and suggest an alternative. This was my test because most cameras including the d750 struggle more with maintaining focus on subjects moving directly toward our away from the sensor. There are also many times in candid situations where children or other adults are approaching the camera as I shoot. Cheers!
@@halfphild I wrote that it is irelevant test that you photoshoot a person that comes to you, since there are almost no such situations in real life, even at wedding when couple comes to you, they dont run or that you make 15-20 shots, i shoot 2-3 times, and go another pose or location, even in everyday journalist, almost never shooting at person that gomes straight to you. I am just saying that camera dont have AI that predict your model moves. Better test the hit rate of some everyday shooting, take photos in counter light, test it in low light without Af assist light, test speed from minimal focal distance to hit, or oposite. Best regards !
Bojan, thanks for your ideas. There are many times in my life where I'm shooting adults and children running and walking toward and away from the camera. Many times. Again, the test wasn't just because of the particular shooting style, it was to test Tony and Chelsea's claim to only 2.5 photos in focus for every 12 shot in high extended mode with af-c. There are many times when even my own children are running away and toward me as I make photographs of them playing. This is a huge test as far as myself and any other parent trying to capture photographs of their adventurous children are concerned. Thanks so much again for your ideas on future tests! Lots of requests from other viewers as well! It's a great camera honestly. Despite my lack of confidence in it's AF-C, it'll be much better with firmware. I'll have a follow up test when I install that. Cheers!
@@BojanVijatov In almost every wedding, fashion show, and environmental, there are such walking sets. It is a hard test of AF, since there is much less to detect in phase angle with an axial displacement compared to a subject moving across the frame.
Can you update this video with the new firmware and a native lens? I am curious how much of an improvement it will be.
Cheers
S lenses do have a higher in-focus rate IMO, and the firmware updates have made a huge difference too.
I've got a side by side of the 50 coming out shortly ;)
Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Cheers!
It would be interesting if you did the same test with single shot and see how many shots are in focus.
Hi Phill... can you do retest update between the old firmware and newest firmware that has the Eye AF?.
Absolutely! This will be happening in the next few days. Cheers!
Thanks Zain! I'm so sorry to hear about your d750 and sigma primes. I understand. I love my 750 too.
Keep your head up.
Cheers!
Cheers
@@halfphild im curious if the update helped alot
What is the Z6 hit rate at the same frame rate as the D750? Seems a more accurate test.
Agreed. Updated tests coming up.
Cheers!
Can you update this video with the latest firmware?
Hi, yeah I need to reshoot this video with all the updates we know have.
I don't own my D750's anymore if that says anything. But I could do a similar competition between the Z6 and Z6ii.
I'll see what I can do.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Cheers,
Phillip
Cheers!
When's the af update due?
So far we've been told the eye af and low light af improvements firmware will arrive in May this year. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great information! Thanks for the info, i 'm currently using the d750 and it's a awesome fullframe coming from a d7100 xD
Cheers!
Nice vid! Seems like the native glass (at least my 24-70 s) grabs focus a bit better than some of my legacy glass. But I could be wrong.
Hey Burton, Thanks! I think I've heard that before. I'm super excited to get my hands on some native glass. Currently my plan is to grab the 24-70 f/4. As soon as I do I will put that to the test! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts
Great info- love the video. I’m curious how these numbers hold up over 1000 photos- or even more. Solid stuff! Keep it up.
I couldn't agree with you more. The D750 is still my favorite, four years later! Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Cheers
Scott, that makes a lot of sense! It's hard to tell what the slight lag is at 12fps but I'm glad you found that out for us! The G9 is a beast! Cheers
On a lighter note, the "first" picture you took w/ D750 was OUT of focus (4:57)... lol. Signed by a proud D750 owner.
Hit rate on manual focus lenses (i.e. adapted M-mount lenses) is astronomically higher. That's the reason I got the Z6 :) It's basically the best Leica M camera replacement at the moment.
Hi Phil, for 50% video 50% stills witch is beter? D750 or Z6?
Hi Sotto!
I've been using the Z6 as my go to now and the D750 as a backup in a lot of cases.
If I had to choose one it'd be the Z6 at this point. But they're both incredible cameras.
@@halfphild
Hi Phil thanks for ur answer.
I take a lot less frame in a session or event since the EVF displays the actual exposure triad appearance in the EVF, and because the actual frame 100% is seen so composition in the EVF is precisely what the file holds
2.0 makes it act like a different camera, fast accurate and no longer jumps to the background when focus is lost.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Secondly in looking at your actual test, the Z6 got you 47 in focus shots while the 750 got you 20 in focus shots (Cup half full or half empty)
lastly how the hell did you miss focus on the very first shot you took with the 750...lol
Yes a native lens test would be ideal. But also to be fair the new lenses for the Z aren't cheap.
Cheers!
Thanks Ash, yeah as soon I can pick one up I'll upload my experiences with those as well. Cheers!
@@halfphild I'm saving for a Z series lens myself (I have the 24-70f4)
@@halfphild I have a Z6, D750, and a D850. I'll run the exact test that you ran using native 50mm 1.8 lenses on both and let you know what the results are. It will be interesting to see how they do. The only thing different I'll do is try and shoot them at the same FPS.
Were you using the FTZ adapter on the z6?
Yes.
Same exact lens in the battle, ftz adapted on the z6.

Good video man. I wish I still had my d750.
Dude thanks a lot! What happened to it? What are you shooting with now? Thanks for watching and commenting man. Means a lot. Cheers
@@markshirley01 That would be amazing! I would scoop up those pancakes so fast.
Thanks so much Eric, I need to get the updated version of this video out asap. Stay tuned.
can you do a follow up with updated firmware...
Cheers!
Can you comment on the autofocus on the z6 after the firmware update?
Hi Kirk, yes. I already have a video out where I talk about that. It's pretty good af in my opinion. It's my latest video. Cheers!
I shoot portrait what do you recommend for me Nikon z6 or Nikon d750? I use sigma art lens 105 f1.4 and 135 f1.8
The D750 wins in the pro photography world for me because it'll write to dual SD cards. Redundancy is a pro trademark. Just my opinion. They're both amazing cameras. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!!!
Phillip Flores love your video! Keep it up👍
The AF is more accurate on the Z cameras compared to any DSLR although using LiveView on a DSLR gets pretty close.
Cheers
@@halfphild Thanks for the reply
Here's the cards I use on Amazon: www.amazon.com/SanDisk-SDSDXPK-064G-ANCIN-Sandisk-Extreme-Pro/dp/B01MFCQVLB/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?keywords=sandisk+extreme+pro+64gb&qid=1570295924&sprefix=SanDisk&sr=8-8
I shoot in raw.
Did you use the FTZ on the Z6?
Hi yes I did! And I haven't had any image quality issues when using the adapter btw. :) Thanks for watching and commenting!
Cheers!
@@halfphild Any focusing issue using AF-C and dynamic focusing like hunting or lagging? What F lens are you using?
@@Tanfo77 I've heard some people mention the native lenses being faster focusing in general but I honestly think in most cases most users won't notice those small differences. I haven't seen any issues in AFC dynamic area.
In this video in particular I was using the 105 f/2.8.
The biggest differences I've noticed between f and s lenses is the breathing, the noise, the sharpness wide open, the lack of fringing and the price! LOL
Was this after the firmware? because for my experience I feel more confident on my z6 that with my D750.
Nope, Jay, this was prior to any firmware. Not great but decent and especially considering what T&C were claiming. This is a "before" video. I'll be performing the same kind of test with the update shortly. Thanks for commenting!
Hi!are those shutter buttons both set to focus priority?
Hi Chang, no, I only ever use back button auto focus. I highly recommend not letting your shutter button also focus. Thanks so much for watching!
Phillip Flores Roger that Thanks for replying!
Has the firmware update with eye AF changed this hit rate in z6?
Im not having the same results with D750 on AF-C 3D...its ok, but not like this. But Z6 has updates now, Z6 is way above in auto area AF face tracking...so Im thinking about going on Z6 now...
The Z6 is years and years ahead of the D750 in smooth auto focusing (video) as well as face tracking.
Thanks so much for watching!
@@halfphild Actually 6 years ahead (younger) 😁 Thanks for reply 😊
I believe wide area has 3D tracking, just not advertised. That's why it has 100% hit rate. It would be good to see a 50 mm or 85 mm z lens vs 50mm or 85mm f lens on d750 to have a fair comparison.
Thanks for that info! I'll look into that more. Also I'll be sure to use some native glass just like you mentioned in the updated video I'm filming this week.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Have you tried the same with the updated Eye AF?
Not yet. That's coming up! Thanks for watching and commenting!
What Is that lens
Nikon 105mm f/2.8 micro
Is this before or after the eye auto focus update?
Hey man, this video was made before the update. I'll be making a follow-up asap. Thanks so much for watching!
Cheers
Man excellent video, compressive but not boring, real. But it badly needs and update.
I honestly don't know how long I'll be holding on to mine. I want it to work and I would like to believe that firmware updates will help but it's frustrating beyond belief.
Oh this is sad to hear but I know it's far from perfect and for other valid reasons not a good fit for some. Is the AF not working for you?
apples and oranges.
Cheers!
Hey Darek, Tony and Chelsea Northrup.
Great Nikon Z6 shoots my friend. Very nice camera. Big like from me. Keep making the awesome content Take care stay in touch please . I hope to see you again soon returning the friendship too. Stay with my strong hug, my dear friend . Have a great day:)
Hi Gosia! Thanks so much for your kindness! Cheers!
Well Im wondering why you didn't shoot in regular high continues mode (5 fps), not extended. Im sure you would get better results with that...and also when you shoot 14 bit it only gives you 9 fps
Yup, I said that. Also I said I was checking the claims Tony and Chelsea made about 12fps. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Cheers
How the fuck did you reach the buffer that fast on the D750??
Video ke liye z6 Steel ke liye 750 the best camera ❤️📸
True, I was getting similar results with my canon mirrorless and dslr. mirrorless is future, but same time in the future will be good🤣
Thanks for watching and commenting! Agreed Mirrorless is the future.
This is a bad test, you should have done 5fps on Z6
I'm sorry you didn't like it. I tested focus on 12 fps in response to T&C's video claiming only about 2fps in focus. That seemed incorrect in my test. I plan on doing this test again with the new firmware asap. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers
WTF? Z6 have 5,5fps in continious tracking AF mode!
