Not everybody is going to love every kind of music, it was extremely kind of you guys to not discredit their talent and even though youre not a fan you still understand what great musicianship looks like. They are probably the best of that specific genre of metal, but symphonic metal is definitely not for everybody.
Thanks for your reaction and thoughts. It may help you to understand the context. The composition is about evolution. Evolution of the earth, humans, music, and instrumentation. There are so many Easter eggs in this song it’s incredible. Thanks for taking the time. ❤
It's not for everyone. I honestly think this kind of music has more appeal to non-metalheads than existing metalheads, which is no bad thing. I personally like watching non-metalheads react to it for the first time, and gain a new perspective and appreciation for metal. It's very impressive music. But I wouldn't listen to it in my own time.
I agree that Nightwish's music is not for everyone. Someone once put it brilliantly; "Nightwish is metal for the thinking mind". I think it's perfectly put and what I understand it to mean is that Nightwish (especially nowadays) suits best people, who want to evolve themselves, understand themselves and appreciate all the nuances of life, each other, humanity, nature and the overall joy of being alive. I myself am a metalhead (and finnish btw) but found Nightwish a few years ago. Of course I had been a fan in my teens, but as an adult, I wasn't impressed. When I started my healing journey a few years ago and wanted to become a better person, to truely understand myself, my heritage, other human beings and my existence on this planet, Nightwish was like a warm blanket. Now I am a total fan, they have (partly) helped me to become this person I am now. I am trully grateful for their music ❤
Thanks for sharing your reaction to this song about the history of our universe & mankind's past, present & future. We are all entitled to our idiosyncratic tastes for all forms of art. P.S. Floor Jansen is little over 6 feet tall barefooted. The albun version of this song is even longer at little over 24 minutes. It has 800+ audio tracks & took 2½ weeks to mix in the studio.
I used to feel the same way about Symphonic / power metal thought it was corny / cheezy , all I listened to was THRASH ( Still do ) EXODUS , Testament, Overkill , Slayer etc. .....I'm ashamed to even say me and my friends used to bully and even beat up those kids that followed Symphonic/ power / Goth , we were assholes ......but as I hit my 50s I started to be more receptive to this style of music , not all the bands but Nightwish in particular ( Floor got me ) to appreciate it . The great thing about this music it opens up the door for people who would normally never listen to metal and introduces them to the heavier stuff .
Igor Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” was written many years before the birth of rock or metal, but it goes harder than any symphonic metal I’ve ever heard.
If it’s not for you, it’s not for you. I never liked the Beatles or Stone. I’ve been a rock/metal fan since the early 1980’s. I only discovered Nightwish during the first days of Covid. They are easily my favorite band of all time.
This made me laugh out loud 🤣 Not everyone can process this kind of depth. These are fast food people. Swifties as I call them 😏 Just kidding. Don't take this too serious. Just a little banter 😉 To each their own 🙌
Nightwish does have a lot of variety in their songwriting. This one is over the top epic which can turn off some people understandably. For me their music is quite charming. I remember you guys liking Yours Is An Empty Hope which is balls to the walls heavy. Maybe you could check out their heavy stuff or maybe a chill ballad which aren't too long in duration, cheesy or overproduced. Master Passion Greed, Song Of Myself, Rest Calm or Our Decades In The Sun could be for your liking perhaps? Out of these only Song Of Myself has a quality live version on RUclips. (Wacken 2013) So the rest would be studio version reactions.
Personally, if you're gonna hit symphonic rock for the first time, I think an "easier" start would've been Within Temptation. They did a live gig with full orchestral support, in 2008 I think, which was fantastic...and pretty accessible to all IMO
no worries, not every music is for everybody - some people like it, some don't. Same with classic death metal - I can't get into that and I tried. As long as you keep respect for the artist, it's all good. Nightwish had been my favorite band for over 20 years, but they lost me lately, sadly. Oh btw this was not a festival - just a Nightwish headliner show, they are a huge band even If not everybody likes them. ;)
I totally agree with you two. There are sections I like, but then it reverts to that sort of soaring, power-metally vibe that just turns me off. It's an emotional state that does not resonate with me. But Nightwish are obviously very talented.
Richard Dawkins' monologue is great in this piece. Who of you has read his book - The GreatestvShow on Earth. The Evidence for Evolution? Richard Dawkins performed this song live at one of the concerts. Great scientist he od.
I like some classical music and think that Handel's Messiah has great melodies throughout, so it surprises me that I also can't get into most symphonic metal. Fast and loud does not equal interesting. It needs more rhythmic and harmonic complexity. There is plenty of Prog Metal out there that fits the bill.

Is this the only symphonic metal band you checked out? If not, I'd recommend Epica. Same genre, different vibe. And if you enjoy live, I'd recommend 'Epica - Consign to Oblivion (live at Zenith)'.

No problem thanks for checking out so many songs. It's obvious many channels use Nightwish just to pump up view numbers. Also since it is almost impossible to monetize Nightwish videos it is not always cost effective to just continue something you are not enjoying.
You want to hear Floor & Marko sing together, definitely listen to ‘Song of Myself’. Respect for listening to this incredibly long song.. I like it but it’s indeed not for everyone. Should you want to try out one more Nightwish song then go for ‘Ghost River’ where Marko & Floor are definitely nailing it..🔥
I feel pretty much the same about most symphonic metal I've heard. It's really impressive to see and hear, but I just can't get into it overall. I bet I would enjoy a live show just for a one time experience, yet it isn't something I can put on and regularly listen to.
I know what you mean. I'm metal/death core kind of lady, but I have my forever love in Nightwish. My guilty pleasure 😂 When I saw them live for the first time in 1998 (with their original vocalist, Tarja) it was done. I love their simple complexity/ complex simplicity in music and lyrics. Composer Tuomas Holopainen is genius.
Thank you for your respectful listening! Would be nice when you've known about the theme/content of this song. The different parts would have been more clear for you. But that's how it is. You can't get the symphonic out of Nightwish. Even in their hardest song Master Passion Greed (only album, Marko sings).
I think it still would be worth a try. As I have understood the totally different styles and switchups are the things not appreciated. Master Passion Greed does have some symphonic elements but they are mostly towards the end and maybe some in the middle to keep it interesting.
Not a big festival, a Nightwish show in Tampere, Finland. Not the bagpipes but Ullian pipes. You really should have put on the lyric subtitles, you would have been able to grasp what the content in this song is all about. With due respect, if you had listened to the word's of Richard Dawkins instead of pondering how tall Floor was, you may have had a better all round listening experience of this Tuomas masterpiece.
Sorry you can't get into Symphonic Metal.... but before you give up on it.... check out Versailles Faith and Decision live with English Subtitles... They are a Visual Kei Melodic Symphonic Power Metal band out of Japan.

As with everything in metal all genres have different "flavors". Nightwish is basically symphonic power metal but what would you think about a more aggressive kind of symphonic metal? I dont believe I have ever asked for a reaction on your channel until now but this is serious now 🤣 Please give Septicflesh - Portrait Of A Headless Man a chance if you would like
You should definetly check out another Lovebites performance, should be much more your kind of thing - I'd recommend some classic thrash metal :) Check out Set the World on Fire or / and Break the Wall.
Damn, 27 minutes? Your title made me want to listen to this because I have also never gotten into this style of metal. I think it's good to be introspective and try to understand why you like what you like. I imagine symphonic metal like Nightwish's will sound "cheesy" to me, which I don't really like since there's definitely things I like that I can imagine someone calling "cheesy". But that's just how I feel. It doesn't have to make sense.
I've never listened to Nightwish because of the cheesy bandname😂 - but NOW I'm addicted and found a big part of my soul in their music😊. The connection to the themes, the lyrics mirrored by the music gets me everytime. Even when I definitely like the more heavier songs like Master Passion Greed ( the hardest song! only album), Dark chest of wonders and Song of myself ( Wacken live), Yours is an empty hope (Wembley live), Weak fantasy (Tampere live), Tribal ...
