Using BIG TOOLS to Make Oak Knee Braces in the Workshop

- We make a lot of these Knee Braces for our Oak Frame Projects. They are, in my opinion, the most recognisable piece of carpentry associated with Oak Framing. We make them in the workshop, and get use some interesting power tools, one in particular, the Mafell NFU50, is quite unusual. There'll be more joinery, carpentry and power tool related videos coming up. Stay Tuned!

Great video Simon very clearly explained. Oh I wish I could afford that Mafell saw
Top workmanship, after watching your Vlogs I’ve decided to build my own oak gazebo. You’ve made the process of making the braces look so simple!!
Very, very helpfull! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Really informative video. Thank you
Great video Simon. That saw is a serious bit of kit. Love all your content and enjoyed your fix radio podcast with Robin. Pure gent thanks for sharing 👍👍
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Great content and demonstration. I will be making a few of these for my lean to pergola in France. Love the Yorkshire pencil sharpener 😂
😂😂😂👍🏻
Enjoying these RUclips videos your putting out Simon. Appreciate you sharing your knowledge top man. 👍🏼 I've got to admit I have workshop envy it looks a great set up you have there.
Thanks Simon!
Great work and well explained
Thanks for watching!
Love how there’s a mirror in the workshop mate 😎 another great video 👏
😂😂😂 that’s the barbers shop i visit each week
Great video ✅
Always great videos! ❤
Thanks for watching 😁👍🏻
Fascinating watching you bring all these processes together and lovely to see. Is it just personal preference to 'bow' only the lower side of the brace or are there other considerations?
Personal preference. I’ve curved both sides a long time ago and much prefer the look of just one side curved 👍🏻
Brilliant 🔥
Thanks 😁👍🏻
Always great videos!👍
Thanks 😁👍🏻
Thx for sharing Simon I enjoyed your video
Thanks….. I’d love to know exactly how many of these I’ve made!
What an excellent lesson
Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Great video. Shows how much goes into an oak frame.
Thanks…. Yes, there’s a lot of time goes into them
Great explanation of how you avoid knotty wood 👍
Thanks 👍🏻
Nice to meet you both the other day at the ( secret location) R----y. Your work is absolutely outstanding
Great work Simon! Love the mafell saw! Would love one too but for my line of work I’d rather keep the coin in the pocket 😅
Yes, i understand….. but for us, it makes total sense 👍🏻
Sterling job, Bowler
Cheers, thanks for watching
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Jesus that mafell is some bit of machinery
It is!
Hi Simon, what type of blade are using on your bandsaw? Many thanks Rich
Quite a coarse one, from memory it’s about 2-3 tpi 👍🏻
Brilliant thank you.
I’d love to see a video on how you design these and putting that into simple man terms. Also what’s the brand of the black and green tape! Love that!
👍🏻 the tape Is a crescent lufkin shockforce niteye 👍🏻
👍👍👍
How have you distributed your power in the workshop Simon? I see the sander lead from above. Great video now go and eat your Easter eggs 😃
I wired the workshop up when I built it and got an electrician in to connect the fuse board. I just made sure there was sockets EVERYWHERE! including overhead ones near the bench 👍🏻
Hey Simon. Can the nfu50 be used to remove the waste parts of your tenon if I didn't want to buy a bandsaw. I use a mafell p1cc jigsaw to curve my braces and I want to invest in the nfu50 but I'd really like to be able to spin the tenons and set it at an angle to take the rest away too
It can be set at an angle yes 👍🏻
@Simon Bowler cheers mate, going to order one this week. Your videos sold it to me 😂
arriving tomorrow with dust extractor. your videos are dangerous
Are knee braces required or is it a personal touch etc?
They are required in most circumstances 👍🏻
Do you put any kinda of finish on your gazebos
We leave that up to the clients, most tend to leave them to age naturally 👍🏻
Wow ........What a game changer for anything remotely similar to Barn making and erecting ..Once upon a time in a different time zone we dismantled a Sussex Barn in parts put back together then built a French Oak Barn (remnants /left over parts of Oak from a French Barn) on top to make it two levels. Cutting the oak was long and hard (slow) work with a table saw many old nails to contend with among other things (the owner of the barn thought it was going slow and bought a diamond tipped circular saw blade that burnt / went blunt in no time) back to sharpening the table saw by hand. That Mafel nfu50 would have been a god send and cut the work by half or more. Think it cost around £2000 at this time (if i have that correct) would be worth the investment for the time it would save you on the job and off the job like preparing the Knee braces. Any work that can be done under cover in workshop saves time....Amazing work Simon thank you for sharing.
