Hi.
I'm the Sound supervisor on this.
Fun fact, there's a small detail I added in the background that's easily overlooked. There is a radio in addition to the victrola (the music playing). We wanted to add a radio broadcast to pair well with the closeness atlas and his team had to St. Louis' local rumblings. however, in 1921, there were no radio stations, as the technology was still experimental. BUT. St. Louis University historically had an agreement with the US weather service to use their airwaves to announce weather and river tidal patterns, which the dean of the school (awkwardly) announced. something that would be important to atlas' team as they regularly used riverboats for their rum running. This was an early period of experimenting with the new technology and only a select few people actually tuned in.
I'm very glad you found our work to be good. Lackadaisy is a very challenging production as we don't have many opportunities to go 'big' or abstract like I do with the other shows I work on (I also do helluva boss, The Hazbin Hotel Pilot, Satina, and Dungeon Flippers). We're looking forward to playing around with more ideas when season 1 comes along.
Wow. I noticed the radio playing but I had NO idea you and your team payed THAT much attention to detail and intertwining historical accuracy with the characters motives.
It’s the little added details that 90% of the audience won’t pick up on that proves you care for the medium you work on and want to create something truly special. You have my admiration and I am more than impressed by your work. I look forward to your future projects and wish you the best of luck!
As someone who is an artist, a huge follower of the recent indie animation boom, and a massive history nerd, I can't stress enough how much some of us appreciate the amount of effort you've all put into getting these *tiny* details correct. It really adds that layer of verisimilitude that elevates the whole thing from "merely" a great work of art to something that really makes me feel like I'm there, living in the world with the characters. Keep up the exceptional work dude!
@@zackakai5173 Tracy Butler, the creator of Lackadaisy takes this kind of stuff very seriously. She wants the setting to be authentic, not just colorful. She will occasionally allow an anachronism, but tries to make them only very minor (like having a cool car appear in her comic a couple of years before it actually was on the market) and usually only if it's a value add -- never just out of laziness. She wants her characters to exist in historical New Orleans -- not cosplay as people from that period. It's part of the reason that her author notes for the webcomic were a lot of fun to read.
@@peoswriter1funny enough, regarding that radio thing, Tracy and I discussed for a few hours about the timing accuracy of the broadcast. Historical records showed the weather reports didn’t start till mid to late summer, And this takes place a little before spring. So we cheated it by a few months to let us have the detail. Sometimes emotional through line can be a higher priority than absolute accuracy. It’s why so many sci-fi shows have laser noises going off in a vacuum.
@@MagusSerling Yeah, there you go! Those are the fudges that make sense, where it's not 100% factually accurate, but it's a harmless alteration and it improves the whole. Low cost, clear benefits. Thanks for the inside info!
There is something new we learn about Mordecai here, in meta-context with the pilot. If you remember in the pilot, Mordecai had no issue shooting at Rocky and Freckle. But when Ivy looked back at him as he was about to shoot, he stopped and sighed. Now we know why.
I think that you also learn that there's a connection between he and Victor, beyond just sharing an employer. Even a serious tough guy (Victor) would question the wisdom of picking on a hitmen/gunslinger/whatever, unless they have enough of a history for him to know how far is too far. He embarrasses Mordecai, but only playfully. He evidently likes getting under M's skin a little but keeps it light.
more than that. ivy is specifically atlas' goddaughter. mordecai may not be loyal to mitzi, but he IS loyal to ATLAS.
If you read the comic, you would have known that was the reason without waiting on the mini episode
The way she calls them out makes complete sense, I don't think I've ever seen a kid be very subtle when they find secrets about other people.
Did you notice that inside the car Victor is fixing, there are scratch marks that have torn the seats up. Which is terrifying
Some fun little facts:
Originally, Fable and Tracy were pitching the idea of a Lackadaisy show to people in the industry they knew, who loved it, but didn't end up picking it up because they didn't know what audience to market it to, most likely due to the current Hollywood's views on high quality animation being for children only.
So that is when they decided to kickstart the pilot, to build a pitch and an audience.
However, once again at Hollywood, with everything they needed, the higher ups were more open to it. But, for some reason, they were asking to give Lackadaisy an entirely new studio to make ANOTHER pilot to pitch it again, when they already had a studio and a pitch they were asking for in the first place.
The higher ups apparently didn't know why either, but that was just part of the procedure of Hollywood, which wastes everyone's time and money.
no t even they know that is so fucking stupid
I don't think it's solely due to Hollywood's pre existing views the show does feel a lot like a kids show just with real guns and curse words which imo is a running theme with indie pilots right now as most are made by adult fans of kid's shows
Christ. This stinks of the industry in the late 1960s, when the degen corpos in suits running the show similarly didn't seem to have any fucking idea of what movies even *were* beyond "how much money will this make me?" Or for that matter, companies like Hasbro (specifically with regards to the D&D license), Boeing, or Gibson in recent years, where it's obvious that the robots with the keys to the money bin don't know anything about the products they're selling. Yet another lesson, as if another were needed, in why any company's entire leadership structure should NEVER EVER EVER consist of nothing but MBAs with zero real-world experience.
If we know about what happened to Hazbin, they should absolutely NOT make a deal with Hollywood...
@@ellugerdelacruz2555 I don't think Hollywood caused any direct problems for Hazbin
It's remarkable to me that it took this short for you to experience the joy and satisfaction I got from frame one of the pilot. Especially how it seemingly clicked that the minimal background music - something you complained about in the pilot, but something I didn't miss and hadn't noticec - became something you celebrated here.
I'm not sure if you were just in a better mood the day you watched Ingenue, but the stuff you liked here was mostly present in the pilot.

Your comment of surprise at how compelling Viktor and Ivy's relationship is reaffirms to me that the pilot focused on the wrong stuff. I personally really enjoyed it, didn't really have many of the problems you had with it, and it's actually what got me interested in reading the comic. Despite this, I think that the showrunners, in wanting to introduce the series in the most exciting way possible, neglected to pitch to the audience its most interesting aspect: its characters. Well, that and its mystery, but let's focus on the characters.
Probably due to...ya know...being a pilot episode, the show tried to present each character's most extreme traits upfront, so it falling flat in that regard is something I see a lot of people say online. Compared to the fast-paced nature of the pilot, in the comic it doesn't feel like they just go from 0 to 100 in a split second because the character intros and buildup was paced more effectively. I'm not saying you should have to read the comic first, I just think that as the show gets into gear, it'll actually take the time to introduce these characters and their quirks, which are almost all quite deep and nuanced.
That being said, yeah the relationship between Viktor and Ivy is quite strong, and overall Viktor might be my favorite character in the cast, which is probably why they took the time to introduce this relationship first.
Also, yes, if the show is anything like the comic, there will be more of these types of scenes.
did you just choose to forget the entire webcomic
Mine are Ivy, Mordecai, and Rocky
A positive review on Lackadaisy from Vanity? Well that’s something new.
Was not expecting a positive Lackadaisy but I'm not complaining

@@GAT957 Vanity usually gives negative reviews. Either because he is a harsh critic or simply a contrarian
@@Goovdluck687 how is it done in the same way when he criticizes different things in each show?
Between "Ingenue" and the chess short, Viktor and Mordecai seem the closest out of everyone. Viktor covers for him (while poking fun) from Ivy and they have a spat over chess, but they seem to respect each other greatly.
Which makes it all the more interesting that Mordecai and Viktor are on opposite sides in the pilot.
Glad you liked the miniepisode! As a lackadaisy fan, don't let negative backlash prevent you from recording your thoughts. I love hearing good analysis, whether I agree with all of it or not.
if i had to pick something to criticize, it's that there's this background conversation going on that makes it clear Ruby extorted ppl in order to get that car (good background detail, much character implications), and I wish it was slightly louder, I only picked up on it because I had subtitles on.
@@cowboybunny7984 yeah same. That's such a cool detail that it's a bit of a shame it isn't louder just slightly. Also, I feel like people's issues with the pilot will go away if they pace it out similarly to the comics. Lackadaisy honestly shines in some of the more slice-of-life moments and compelling character drama.
6:05 Small correction Viktor is slovakian not russian

4:00 About that, Reuben "Ruby" Pepper is confirmed to be Ivy's father. That is why she enjoys spending time with him
My favorite thing about the minisode is that I'm pretty sure it references events that happen in the comic. There's a flashback in the comic where Viktor and mordecai are sent to this cabin to kill the people inside. Mordecai ends up falling down the stairs and afterwards his arm looks pretty roughed up.
Well, in this short you learn that Atlas is Mitzi's wife (if you couldn't put that together from the pilot), and that Mordecai used to work for Atlas, and by extension, with Viktor and Lackadaisy.
They have a short called Stratagem that would chronologically shortly proceed this in a way that won't be clear without reading the comic.
Not sure if you noticed this detail about mordecai being there but him being there and interacting with ivy gave us more context to what Serafine meant about "being sentimental about old times" and why Mordecai hesitated to shoot ivy with his gun in the pilot, its because of this you get those answers to a originally puzzling question, so Mordecai being there wasnt really random.
I just found it really wholesome, I just like the vibes of it, it feels realistic and overall pretty cute with an amazing art style
I love how the review of the short story is more positive and even longer than the actual pilot story
(also can't wait for him disliking episode 2 and than loving the next short)
You should watch Stratagem
Damm Vanity… you made a masterful review on the newest Lackadaisy Short and NOT the CHESS one…
Such shame. I hope it's at least mentioned. Viktor Offensive is the only move I know.
I can’t understand wanting a more subtle approach to Ivy. Because Ivy is not a subtle character.
I think Ruby may be Ivy's dad as his full name is Reuben "Ruby" Pepper and Ivy's full name is Ivy Pepper, this hinting he is a parent, he also mentioned that something is going on with someone named Effie -who is likely his wife- but hints its not something he can openly talk about. The Lackadaisy pilot takes place in 1927, and Ingenue takes place in 1921 meaning Ivy's around 9 to 11 seeing as she's 18 in the pilot. Atlas is Ivy's Godfather, so something unforunate may have happened to Ruby and his Wife. Or there was some reason that Atlas and Mitzy May did make the decision to take Ivy in before Atlas died in 1926.
Yep! I have kept up to date with the news on both the lackadaisy website and the little daisy cafe, and I’m pretty sure I remember them stating plainly he was her dad when they revealed the character design some months back.
Fun fact: Besides Michael Kovach voicing Rocky, Ruby is voiced by Edward Bosco AS WELL! ❤️🖤
I feel like these Indie shows really share their voice actors 🤣🤚
"Oh no. She's precautious."
This is the type of subtlety that Vivziepop _thinks_ that she has...
elaborate if you wish to be acknowledged or stay out of the way
@alexanderleonardi3625
Hey, I'm just stating the facts.
And more than one person agrees.
@@ellugerdelacruz2555 ok but please elaborate anyway. you just kind of sound like a dick
Why the negativity? I feel like comparing indie animations like that is just counterproductive tbh
@dalikolo
If we want to have better stuff, comparison is needed. After all, isn't seeing what works and what doesn't how we make things better? The only thing counterproductive here is not facing criticism...
Who ever said comparing what works and what doesn't with different indie projects is a waste of time is a total mororn because, at the end of the day, EVERYTHING is compared and contrasted.
Another interesting fact! During the scene where Ivy is checking out the gunned down door, you can actually subtlety hear Ruby and Atlas conversing in the background. Ruby says “Yeah. there were no bodies harmed in the making of this transaction, because I dealt with a bunch of nobodies.”. And while not only being a clever hilarious pun and cute play of words from Ruby, also gives us information on Ruby, what he does, and what exactly is his relationship with Atlas.
Also as someone coming from the comics, there are SO MANY little references and nicknacks you’ll see in the short, and so many more even if you didn’t come from the comics! Serving as a treat for comic readers while not being needed if you didn’t, which is fantastic acknowledgment to the audience from the writers.
The sound design was masterful, I didn’t even notice it but felt it shows how amazing it is. As someone who’s watched the short about a dozen times now while STILL learned a lot from this video shows how much depth they put into it.
There’s so many details from the short it’s amazing, so much care and love was put into it. Complete appreciation and praise to the writers, animators and everyone who worked on it.
I feel like some of the aspects you praised here were present in the Pilot as well (which makes sense because it's the same team, even if better funded now) but you ignored them back then for some reason. I still gotta refresh both the Pilot and your review of it in memory to pinpoint exact moments.
I love the backstory of Ivy and how she met Mordecai and Viktor, even though she knows they are gangsters, she's pretty brave about it she's just one curious little girl. So adorable. Also her dad is voiced by Edward Bosco, which is pretty cool.😊🤩
Another sort of subtle detail to appreciate is the framing of the whole short. Readers of the comic (or watchers of the eventual season 2) will recognize that it is all in current day Viktor's perspective, it's him basically lying in bed in his home and looking at this particular framed picture on the wall. For the sake of avoiding spoilers I suppose, I'll just say that recent interactions between the main characters of the short in the current storyline certainly adds a lot to this "flashback". Among other things it makes it just that more bittersweet.
But the thing I always liked the most about Lackadaisy is that you clearly don't need the extra context to appreciate it, whether it's the comic or the animations . The comic itself is slowly built up in a similar way: you don't know all the context immediately, but there are a lot of subtle hints and foreshadowing that you may or not pick up on immediately. This is all possible in the first place because the whole story was planned out so well in advance, it all creates a cohesive whole perfectly. And what you have as a result of that is what I'd call layered storytelling. If you watch/read it for the first time, it's a complete and fun package. But when you learn some of the context, say from later installments, repeat viewings/reads will feel fresh and incredibly enjoyable because now you're engaging with a whole another layer altogether by coming across those small hints again. Not to mention you may see whole scenes in a different light. But once again, it's not a requirement or a barrier. I just appreciate it immensely how Tracy managed to find a balance between rewarding the audience proportionately with how deeply they choose to engage with her work, but at the same time not punishing them if they choose to do so more casually or are simply new.
Same principle applies when it comes to the huge focus on historical accuracy. While I personally couldn't really tell the difference and thus I am much less interested about eg. whether they used the exactly correct car model for that year or not (probably since I'm not American in the first place), there are clearly a lot of people who love that stuff. And while nothing is lost for me because there's still the wonderful story and characters for me to dig into personally, which are both unaffected by this aspect, it gives those people specifically something a little extra. And the very notion of that plus the general attention to detail I can also appreciate.
Oh no. It's precocious.
I subtract numbers, too.
pretty sure Ruby is Ivy's dad
Ruby is Ivy's dad
idk how he didnt pick up on it, they look very similar
And he’s addressed as “Ruby Pepper”
I agree - this is better than the pilot.
A lot more silent storytelling is present in this than in the pilot, and I think it also introduces the characters better than the pilot did.
Same i got interested because of this short
A ton of lore is in the comics. Such as Mordecai's childhood (partly) and his family. If you're ever bkred, give it a shot
An important detail. Ivy finds the old car door with the bullet holes, immediately after pestering Viktor who is installing a new door WITH AN ARMOR PANEL BOLTED TO THE INSIDE. That's a pretty significant juxtaposition. Getting shot at isn't just a random occurrence here, it's something they plan for.
Ruby IIRC was in the business of driving booze delivery shipments when he worked for Atlas; it's likely he was inside the older car when it was getting shot at.
if Lackadaisy ever gets picked up by a larger company, "Ingenue" would've made an excellent opening scene.
I always love reveiws that break down video art liike this one!
I say that the waiting was worth
I'm not sure if you COULD'VE done this but it'd be nice to hear some clips with audio. Either way love the review the ambience is awesome and I love hearing about it
Well, unexpected for Lackadaisy to make something this good, but gotta say, congratulations Lackadaisy for no longer being bad (kinda worried about episode 2, when it eventually releases, suffering from the same issues as The Pilot, but I'll just wait and see)
you remind me a lot of vanity, a.k.a not liking anything besides Liam’s works /J
Don't worry from what I see it won't have the issue of cramming too much in too small of a space (as some certain other show does).
@@muserweaver tbh I'd rather have too much cramming be the problem for Lackadaisy instead of it just being painfully boring and empty half the time as The Pilot did (this short episode did fix that problem for now, thankfully, as Ivy being developed a bit more was very entertaining and every moment we see her getting closer to realize there gangsters was just, I love it when any series decides to use the soundtrack in a way that rewards you for listening, the sound of a clock ticking in the background, the same that plays in the original Pilot when Mordecai is timing when to aim, playing in in background when Ivy notices Mordecai's gun, just so good, it makes me so happy to see that small detail I just love things like that and I want more things like that)
Except the pilot was made to show audiences the story, the already made fans to see the story in motion and to the show new comers the story and what's to come. I'm sure the story will be like ingenue because Tracy Butler is a good writer, the pilot was just to show what can be done like normal animated series pilot it's not episode 1 or something. Just a showcase of the story. And the story was written with a full blown comic behind it so I see where they just didn't want to repeat or show information shown in the comic just focusing on the main premises and characters, who each character is and what they do and role they serve. And that they're rum runners.
That's your opinion. I personally enjoyed the pilot. It was fun and well animated.

Also I thought this 5 minute short was nice. It reminded me of those short extra that Pixar would do occasionally. With other indie projects, due to the lack of time and money, the story often has to be at a breakneck pace. This is a breath of fresh air. Just seeing characters interact in an environment is nice. Idk the entire Lackadaisy lore, cus I didn’t read the webcomic either, but the vibe I get from Lackadaisy reminds me of the charm of old Disney in the best way possible. 2. The show is more or less a continuation of where the comic left off, she has left the comic on the back burner but has yet to confirm whether or not they are the same universe.
They're not the same universe. The comic is the source material and the animation is the adaptation. The show will cover more or less the story of the comic, but it will also go into much more detail. She said she wants to continue the comic soon, but how soon will that be, who knows.

@deoxyribomorph99 so Viv extends an olive branch, trying to promote a sense of unity and make peace with the Lackadaisy crew and the respectful thing to do is reject that peace offering and never hold any of the shitheads on her team who caused the entire affair to blow up as badly as it did accountable for their actions?
