Rita is performing at the Smithsonian in DC tomorrow for free! I met her last night in NYC where she did a show at the Museum of the American Indian. She is still in her prime. I hope you get to meet her she's lovely beautiful soulful - just great. Make it a point to see her in the future if you can manage!
Peter Allen who co-wrote it, recorded it live in 1976 for his live album released in 1977. Then recorded it for his 1979 album I Could Have Been A Sailor. It was presented to Melissa Manchester in a tender, lullaby arrangement, who upon entering the studio to record it discovered that Clive Davis (head of Arista label at the time) had a different vision of that song with Melissa belting out a big ballad that became one of her signature songs. I appreciate all the styles I’ve heard of this song and especially fond of Rita Coolidge’s version here. It’s also interesting that she resembles Melissa in this video too.
Peter co-wrote but the Moments were first the one other than him to record it before everyone else did Rita's version sounds similar to the Moments version i like Melissa too. just different interpretations of it that's all
