Melissa Manchester without a doubt one of the most underrated singer/songwriter of her generation. The woman was the complete package and what a showman. Here catalog is masterful and getting just her "Greatest Hits" will only be a tease, her early out of print albums clearly define the artist. Is about time that a full "Remastered Anthology" of her work is finally released.

Written by her friend from Australia, the late Peter Allen and Carole Bayer Sager. I actually discovered Peter Allen last night for the first time I love his version of this song too!! I actually saw and met Melissa a few years ago in Philadelphia! She was so sweet and she put on an awesome concert. This song was included in the set and she sang it beautifully! She and I had the same curly hair, we were twins that night. My mom called her my hair sister! I would love to see her again very soon. She still sounds amazing today just as she did back then.

My mom and dad cried over me as I lay dying. In retrospect, that was much less disturbing to me than seeing those haunting clowns dancing around, and that creepy f***ing puppet on the high wire.

Just as you're about to possibly forgive the clown mess they come up with the most disrespectful and unappetizing moves that don't fit the song at all. And is that Janice the Muppet sax player dancing on a tightrope? All that was missing was Gonzo doing ballet

On this day in 1979 {February 3rd} Melissa Manchester performed "Don't Cry Out Loud" on the ABC-TV program 'American Bandstand'...
At the time the song was at #24 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; and seven weeks later on March 25th, 1979 it peaked at #10 {for 1 week} and spent 23 weeks on the Top 100...
It reached #9 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart, and also #9 on the Canadian RPM 100 Singles chart...
Ms. Manchester will celebrate her 64th birthday in twelve days on February 15th {2015}...

The song would probably have charted higher on the pop charts were it not for the fact that it was hard to get a ballad to play on the radio in the midst of the disco craze. Clive Davis gave an interesting interview at the time to Billboard where he talked about the difficulties of getting the song recorded by the right person.

Few songs ever captured my heart the way this did. This is one of the few songs that helped redeem the seventies. My thanks and Beth Wishes go out to you for posting this, and to all the others that recognize a good song when then hear it!

The clowns KIND OF make sense.
When your heart is breaking, bottle it up and put on a smile the same way a clown has to smile even if he's had the worst day of his life.
The execution of putting clowns in this however, made me glad I haven't done drugs for a while or I would probably be freaking out.

@Robert Lee, Countertenor Exactly! 1st verse:
“Baby cried the day the CIRCUS came to town,
cause she didn’t want PARADES just passing by her,
so she PAINTED ON A SMILE and took up with some CLOWN
while she danced without a net up on the wire.

      Isn't it rich, aren't we a pair
Me here at last on the ground - and you in mid-air
      Send in the clowns
Isn't it bliss, don't you approve
One who keeps tearing around - and one who can't move
But where are the clowns - send in the clowns

This song was offered to Shirley Bassey by Peter Allen, she declined it, later she regrets it. It was a big hit that made millions of dollars. Melissa Manchester was the lucky one!!! If it meant to be, will be!
