- In this video, I head off to the woods on my bike on a bike-packing mini adventure.Having found a nice spot amongst the pines, I set up my tarp and hammock and begin to get things ready for an enjoyable evening of good food and the relaxing rhythm of the forest.
Liver and onions is on the menu, washed down with a superb beer - before settling down to a comfortable night’s sleep, swinging in the light summer breeze.
I hope you enjoy the video.
Thanks for watching!

You shouldn't have to explain your self Simon . We as family men appreciate how difficult it is to do the things you love ! I always smile when your notifications pop up . Absolutely great 👌 thank you !!
No matter what type of trip you take, if you film it, I will watch. Your camera work is advanced, your voice calming, and your content is always educational. Thank you for creating, I'll be watching. Cheers!
Simon, its awesome that you've been doing RUclips this long and you never run out of ideas for fresh content. I'll have to try bikepacking one of these days. Cheers bud!
Thanks Sam!
@@simonablokeinthewoods is your
simon, a bloke with offal in the woods ! I nearly had a heart attack when you said 'better than o'boy!
No joking i cant believe there is anything better for Simon. In the states most i get is SwissMiss.
I'm quite impressed at how well equipped you were considering the lack of carrying capacity. I guess you just gotta make sure not to take stuff you don't need.
That’s the key mate - take the bare essentials and if items can have multiple uses, even better (but allow room for a couple of luxuries!) 😁
@@simonablokeinthewoods Such as a very nice beer!
One of my favourite meals my
mum made when we were kids, liver, onions, sausages, bacon, garden peas mash and gravy, scrumdidliumtious.
Yum!!! 😋
I've never had lamb liver and I mean to look into it now. I've had beef and pork liver. Don't care for the pork. Really looked tasty to me!
I'd also like to try the Knorr stock pots.
I am the only one who eats liver and bacon in my family. I will have to try your one pan cook.
@@maryblaylock6545 my mum always did lambs liver, I think she preferred it, but I discovered years after leaving home I preferred beef liver. It’s all good, I love my bistro gravy too… yum. I miss my mums cooking, she was a great cook.
Magic, thankyou Simon for all you do, always a pleasure.
Simon, you should change your channel name to: Simon, a gourmet in the woods. You eat better in the forest than I do at home. Btw, I know you like to add hot sauce to a lot of your foods, do you ever use Sriracha sauce?
For a treat I take a Granny Smith apple or any tart/sweet apple that isn't mealy and slice thinly. Then I put a drop of two of Tabasco Sauce on it. If you like you can slice up a whole apple & dot each piece with Tabasco and put thin slices of a good cheddar on them. Can be served warmed up or cold. Lovely treat!
@@maryblaylock6545 : I am a fan of Frank's Hot Sauce, and put it on many things. Love it
on Kettle Chips and scrambled eggs.
Hahaha - thank you! I love Sriracha 😋🔥
You could carry a bladder pack when your on your bike also good for canoe trips every thing.👍🍻
Agreed! I carry a CamelBak Mil-Spec Crux Hydration Pack
I came to the comment section to say the same thing
I have a camelback, great way to carry extra water, I just hate having anything on my back when biking 👍
Thank you so much Simon for the outing. I live through you. If it werent for your videos id go stir crazy. I didnt even get to retire as a coast to coast truck driver. My health brought me down so i have not even attempted going camping. Its been 2 years since i got to kayak also, even longer to canoe. God bless you Simon and keep them coming youve got an old fan base that keeps on watching, and seeing your sub grow dramatically soon youll have 150k.
Looks absolutely delicious Simon !
I love liver and onions .
I never considered doing over a campfire, but I'm definitely going to try it.
Keep up with the great videos .
Love Liver and Onions! My grandmother made them for me many years ago and I still crave them occasionally. You should make a bike sidecar for Maggie, or put her in your bike trailer...LOL! Another great video.
I just love watching and listening to you on your outings, no matter what you do. When I get that notification I literally stop what I’m doing and go watch! Liver and onions is also one of my favs. I’m an old granny in Tennessee. Thank you!!
Thank you Simon, appreciate your hard work. You're a genuine person, good father. Plus honest & forthright. Thank you again.
At last a proper backpacking camp so missed these Simon. Great that they are back. Normality is returning.
Good vid' Simon, Yes I can recall the leather texture of school dinner liver. My mum always bought lambs liver fryed with onions and odds and sods left overs. Muhco yummy. Many thanks Simon.
Neat gear. My dad did cycling he had a long route 20 and short route 16. He did that three four times a week then 2012 he went to recumbent bike lowered it to 7 miles, I guess it was harder. The flat plains here. Winter he did a stationary cycle, all well into his 80s even. Is that a real live cockoo bird? I only have heard my grandmothers cuckoo clock. Wow! Looks yummy. Norwegians knit beautiful color work well too. I watch two designers from Norway, they knit very well in the mountains of Norway. Absolutely beautiful. Thanks
Thanks Julie! Yes, the Cuckoos are early this year. I’ve always fancied trying a recumbent 👍👍
Another great video!.My Hennessy is the best nights sleep I get out in the woods. As a lifelong hater of liver, yours looked pretty damn appetising!
Unfortunately most people feel that you need to cook it to death which renders it to shoe leather. Like preparing oysters you need to be kind to liver.
Primeval. That's the word that comes to mind for this one. Some of the shots of you cooking over the fire, the bird sounds, the morning sunlight through the trees. Could have been yesterday, or a million years ago.
That forest did have that feel about it - tall pines and ferns - love it! 😁
Thanks Kimberly
Haven't commented on your videos before.
Just like to say that it was fantastic , you cought the atmosphere just right.
You seem to be one of life's genuine good guys.
Well done and thanks for the escape.
Brian.
Love your stuff - & attention to detail.
But isn't it a bummer when your car breaks down & you have to take a bike!! Lol. Keep it up bloke!
Thank you Brian!
Another excellent video Simon. You mentioned that you’d only bought limited water. Maybe a 2 or 3 Ltr cycling Camelbak might be a low profile option for more significantly water capacity. Just a thought 🙂
Another cracking video Simon. The perfect night we all strive for. 👍🙏👏👏👏
I’d like to see more people preheat their frying pan BEFORE putting the oil in it. It is so better to do it that way. Professional chefs do it that way, the oil has less time to degrade and also, especially with cast iron and steel pans, it does a mini “season” as the oil hits the hot metal. Aside from that 🧐 great video!😁. Very partial to liver and onions myself, I like to use a few good slops of Stout in mine, with a little sugar to compensate the bitterness, I also caramelise my onions. Everybody has their own twist on a classic of British cuisine.😁
Very interested to see your carrying method on your bike, I’ve just got a hybrid bike that I want to start cycle camping on. I have some excellent NVA (East German army) backpacks that I us as haversacks (shoulder bags), but they also make really good panniers as well, there are two types, both are waterproof, but one sort also has a roll top waterproof liner to totally seal it against water ingress. They also look pretty cool with their strichtarn camo pattern!😁.
What size is your Blackburn Outpost Frame Bag? As far as I can tell, you can’t fit the water carrier where you have yours, with the large size frame bag, which is a shame, as the water carrier looks pretty damned good for larger canteens or sleeping mats etc.
Update: Just bought the Blackburn Outpost Frame bag in large size, think yours must be a smaller one, mine takes up all the space up, also bought the Blackburn extra big water carrier, going to fit it on my front fork, might get another though, to fit under the bottom frame like yours. Found some Ortlieb City Rollback panniers for £90 for a pair, 40 litre capacity, total. They’re quite a bit bigger than my NVA backpack ones, thinking to get them, then maybe hang my sleeping bag and sleeping mat off the handlebars instead of a handlebar bag, that should give me a similar capacity to my LK35, which is my usual backpack for overnighters. Happy days are a coming!😁
Super enjoyed this one. So tranquil and relaxing. I use nature as a mental health reset as well. Being stuck in the middle of a cold snap in Northern Canada means not getting out just now. Your content is the next best thing for me. Cheers Simon!
Glad to know about the notification anomalies - I used to think they were fairly foolproof but have discovered it isn't so!
Hornworm your phone is great quality for filling bruv
So if you ever want to go super light you know you can just use that :)
Thanks for alllll the work you do for us
Love ya mate
A great looking meal. My wife and I haven't had liver and onion for a long time. I've a mind to remedy that very soon.
You're right about being good for your mental health, I only watched the video and I feel better already. Imagine how great I'd feel if I actually went out there and did it.
I really enjoyed the vid, looks like something I wanna try!!
I got my notification over night here in Aussie no problem..
I always look forward to it... Good one mate!
Great video I loved every minute of it, you must live in a very beautiful part of the country the quality and relaxation that seems to come across in your videos is very infectious it makes you feel that you're right there with you, well done, as for the liver you had it looked very tasty, you need to try chicken livers with a creamy mushroom sauce with broccoli and cauliflower mixed-up in it lovely, im looking forward to your next adventure see you there.
Thanks Stuart - the chicken liver recipe sounds delicious! 😋
Gorgeous Simon! We haven’t forgotten you! Much appreciated on a day like today! You bring so much joy to the world!
Nice one Simon, will be pushing the reset button tomorrow ATB
Simón, how do you manage to STILL wear a wool beanie in summer weather?
Oh yes... I was thinking the same thing... LOL. I was sweating for him... lol.
Haha - I didn’t want to crumple my Tilley hat 😁
Lamb liver?! That's gotta be a UK thing. I don't think we can get that here (Tennessee, USA). It's either beef or (God forbid!) pork. I'll try it if I can find it! Excellent as usual, Simon!
Or chicken liver , which is what nandos use . Iamb liver is tasty :)
I can't explain how much I enjoyed watching this. Such a beautiful, quiet peaceful woodland. Looking forward to hopefully seeing you back here with another video soon. Love the extension on the twig stove 🙂
I quite like liver and onion with mashed potato and baked beans. For me it's comfort food, and it's incredibly good for you.
Wonderful video Simon……another viewer John Hempsall took the words right out of my mouth… A WATER BLADDER…!!! Great to see out and about!!! CHEERS
Haha - I do actually have one too - just not a fan of wearing white biking 😂👍
👋👋👋 Simon , as always awesome! Doesn't matter Simon how you get us out there be it walk, wheels, boat, you help us to long for our journeys with you. Thank You for all you go through to take us there !!!! stay safe👋 see yeah next Journey 👋
Loved everything about this video. Excellent, as always, Simon.
Love the sound of the English forest in the morning. Makes me feel homesick.
SO MANY good things to comment on: I have your folding fry pan on my 'to-buy' list. On your camp, your meal may have crowded the pan...but it seems to be the proper size for your expanded twig stove. Lamb's liver is my favorite liver, with milk-fed veal coming second. I cook liver thickly sliced, say even one-inch thick, and keep it medium-rare. As a child, my Mom and Dad liked well-done beef liver, dusted as you did and cooked with bacon and onion. We had that from time to time. Your off-road biking skills are 'something.' You demonstrate that it is good to KEEP active and to keep fit. It may be difficult to believe, but I was a winner of Girl in the Woods 100,000 viewers give-away: she sent a generous package of camp cookery things--enough to do whatever needed to be done for one in the woods. Of course, I am 'chuffed,' but the point is the package included a twig stove. I never have had one or used one before. So, I paid close attention to your video and learned something!
Congratulations on your prize! I'd be seriously chuffed m'self!
Thank you James!!
Nice prize - you lucky fellow - twig stoves are great, they take a bit of getting used to and you need to keep feeding them, but the fuel is free and there’s a lot to be said for that! Happy cooking!
I never knew which type of liver my family used to cook?
Someone said Lamb liver & maybe? Back then, Lamb seemed to be more affordable & we'd get a good leg every now & again
Newer clicked that bell and I see all the videos.
I like the way you make your videos, Simon. When I watch you cooking. It's almost like I'm sat there with you.
Keep up the good work.
Simon, thank you for taking us on such lovely adventure. Your equipped well as usual. I love liver and onions but never tried this recipe; thanks for sharing I’ll try it out. You must pack more than one beer, trio should be a standard backpacking item as is a first aid kit. If your short on water you can cook with it. On an other note I have heard many complaints from other you tubers on their video notifications not going out but likely I am in Canada and do not suffer such bad faith; I get all notifications. I guess the RUclips Police does not cross our border. Cheers and keep filming but never be sorry for taking family times. I take your videos as they come and would never question if you skip one or more weeks. Thanks.
Thank you!!
super peaceful, thanks Simon. I have never seen anyone go camping and eat liver and onions, and I have never ever seen anyone eat liver and onions with gravy in a tortilla... you definitely think outside the box. Stay well
Thanks Simon, I remember watching your vids last year thru lockdown and that inspired me to start bikepacking....... absolutely love it! falling asleep in a forest is almost as good as waking up in one!!
See you on the road dude :-)
I've always wondered at how little water you seem to take with you. How uncomfortable would a small backpack be for you while cycling?
For me, very uncomfortable - I will happily wear a backpack all day long, even a heavy one while walking, but I really dont like wearing anything on my back while cycling 👍
Holy snappin rectums Simon that liver and onions looked fantastic.
As always Simon, I enjoyed going on your bikebacking trip with you! Cheers! I used to LOVE liver and onions and for some reason I've gone off of it.
I love Your videos and how You thread nature, eg. protecting the tree's bark by using belts. Also Your equipment is very nice.
The grill: have You ever heard about the (swiss) Brändi Grill? Very clever concept, nice 20x30cm grill, but barely strong enough for a frying pan. Not cheap, but made in a social manufacture with handicapped employees.
Another lovely video Simon, your videos always seem to distill the feeling of peace and serenity in the woods, more so I would say than most other YTs
When Si went to sleep and the camera faded I was relieved that it wasn't my TV that had developed a dead pixel.
When talking about the cuckoo getting closer I thought let’s hope it’s not turfed you out of the hammock. Yet another great video Simon showing of what the Brecks has to offer.
The triple haze seems to be the staple for us Outsiders. the Elvis juice is very nice Simon. very addictive though lol..gave you a sub buddy..
Simon, I think I have tarp envy compared to my poor long suffering DD tarp, those spreaders look a great addition
Lovely video Simon - nice to hear some Cuckoo in the woodland too 👍
Hi Simon, enjoyed, your video, thankyou 😊💝🏴 xxxxx
PF hot sauce: Pink Floyd Saucerful of Secrets soundtrack yearned for in deepest pine woods?
Wots for breakfast? Heart, kidney, tongue and a few eye balls..... Dammm man....grossing me out....lol
Many thanks Simon. Always find your videos instructive & enjoyable, Stay well & safe. Cheers.
Every Sunday morning, 2 sausage, 2 bacon, black and white pudding, scrambled eggs and lambs liver.
I have to admit. You certainly know how to make liver and onions look delicious..👍
Enjoyed watching your amazing video thank you for sharing Simon .
Liver and onions is a very rare treat for me as well, since nobody in my family likes liver. I can only eat it when I go out on my own, like you did...lol
So good to see this vid, after being almost 100% housebound for over a year! Can I suggest Turkish/Albanian Liver (Arnavut Cigeri) next time? Esp good with parsley and a fried egg or two 😉👍 (oh, and no liver more than once a week or you risk Vit A and copper O.D.)
Wonderful filming, so relaxing and positive. Thx. One question: Are you using the standard Honey Stove or the titanium version? What do you think of the differences? Best regards, Dirk
Lovely to take a breath and chill...
Hope your camera is ok? Could well be a matter of reflashing firmware:
www.canon.co.uk/support/consumer_products/products/cameras/digital_slr/eos_700d.html?type=firmware
Its easy to do, just put it on SD card.
Once you have that sorted check out Magic Lantern ;)
I'm definitely not a fan of liver but love kidneys done in a similar way with smash ;-b
I'd recommend a camel back next time! Three litres of water on your back might have helped.... Great video, I love watching your content...
Excellent setup and video, l've never seen a honey stove before but now I'm definitely buying one. I've recently brought a Trek MTB for bike packing and already own a Warbonnet Blackbird I've used for tramping in the past. I realise I need to cut down on the kit I'd use for backpacking to something smaller/lighter and my current stove a Swedish army Trangia will get sidelined for a honey/hive setup.
Hi Simon. I liked your video, I've just planning a five days bike trip.
How size is your tarp?.
Thanks and keep going. 👍🏻
By butcher gets a couple of Lambs every Tuesday and the liver is AMAZING and SO cheap.
Liver, kidney, raw oysters and caviar are the only things I wouldn't thank you for.
(and some kind of fermented 'bean snot' I once had, courtesy of a Japanese friend)
However, throw in a couple of beef sausages and that looks lovely.
I'm off for two weeks, starting tomorrow - can't wait!
I've just bought one of those mini-anchors. Watching this channel is expensive!
RUclips has unsubscribed me from you, I´ve just noticed it now.
Weird......
But nice video, and that's a fine old-school MTB!
Evening Simon, been a while, good upload as usual. Just watching Andy and he mentioned you have some combined projects planned and a thought occurred to me. What about a workshop build? It needn’t be camping/ bushcraft related although I imagine there are some good subjects for you both to realise in the genre. Maybe something vehicle oriented or an off the wall, unrelated surprise. Might be a good idea for winter when it does what Britain is famous for and p..p..p.. persistently rains or blows fit to take ones skin off. Just a thought though, in the meantime, keep doing what you do, providing the good stuff.
Hmmmm -food for thought!! 🤔👍
Thanks Nick
Nice video Simon 👍. Beautiful & peaceful lt forest, you found 👍👌.I'm one of those people how don't like , liver or kidney 🤮. Now stake strips & some grated cheese 😋😋.
This is great! So simple, so beautiful. One question if I may, I'm intrigued as to where you source your background music! It's absolutely wonderful!
Great vlog and great weather too Simon!
I'd pass on the liver......food of Satan as far as I'm concerned, force fed it as a kid by my late Mum!
😂😂 It’s definitely a marmite food!
@@simonablokeinthewoods 🤣 thing is I LOVE Marmite!
A very good job Simon,I will try your liver and onions. Thanks to you and yours. GARY FROM Ohio.
Great video simon. The setup was spot on. Thanks for sharing this adventure with us. I love the idea of using the Fire anchor with your stove i will have to try it i just ordered 2 fire anchors from TJM. Liver and onions are a food staple here in addition to rocky mnt oysters which are amazing. I have a question on the water situation have you thought about a 3L hydration pack like a Camelbak in addition to your bottles. Cheers
Love liver and onions with bacon and love hazy IPAs! And, I prefer hammock camping and do so pretty much year round here in New England. Good stuff! I've heard complaints from other RUclipsrs about notifications. Oddly, I have not had any issues as a subscriber with the bell checked I get notifications as soon as new videos are posted. The bell in my tool bar will have a number in a red circle and if I click on the bell I see all the new videos posted by folks that I subscribe to. I thought I was hearing a cuckoo. I had no idea that they are native to the UK.
Corporals Corner appears to have similar notification issues. Feels like RUclips has issues with camping and survival channels. Just my guess.
Hi Simon
Was that a ride through the Norfolk Breckland ?
Good to make time away from the family for yourself.
Might bump into you one day.
Thanks for the informative vids.
Really enjoyed this video mate. Mike @ TA Outdoors said the same thing about notifications in his last video. Luckily it hasn't affected my viewing. Regards to Maggie!
Your liver & onions looked delicious. I am encouraged to do a cycle wildcamp. 👍great video. ATB Grays
You and Mike from TA Outdoors are having the same issue with RUclips unfortunately.
Keep at it Simon. I appreciate the videos.
Beautiful woods to camp in. What the folks at Rivendell Bicycles call a sub-24 overnighter.
your spot in about the Liver. never had it since school. its scares me...great video. some useful pointers......
Sorry to hear your having trouble with notifications, but your not alone. Six other sites I watch are having the same. They say it's because of RUclips putting up only the big guys they make money off of....probably.
Good to see you out and about. Lovely video young man . Thanks 😊
Hi Simon interesting and very watchable as always, you tube being what it is has anyone else said to you your seat Hight is quite a bit too low on "yer tredder" causing you to work harder than you need, for maximum efficiency your leg should just have the smallest amount of bend on full rotation giving the most amount of power to the push stroke, this lets you go further and climb and go cross country very much more efficiently. sorry for the nerdiness, I said to my wife have to email you but she did confirm i should... we both mountain bike lots and for many years.... All the best great videos always, Oh we love the landrover conversion, we had one but swapped for a fully converted (by me) Disco 3 overlander with overland trailer much more comfortable for long journeys, all the best Phil and Louise
Hi Simon, great video, liver, bacon onions food of champions. Thanks for the relaxing adventure. Take care. 😉
Great video Simon, thank you. Bit late getting to watch I’m sorry to say. But thoroughly enjoyed it. Great place you found there.
Thanks heaps Andy, your video make me want to strive harder. Keep em coming mate. From downunder ❤️🤘🏻🍺
Just found you on here and going through your videos.... Great content and some great advice... thank you
I love watching your videos.
Nice cooking chef. I enjoy eating liver too. My favorite is deer liver.
Aloha
As a kid my Mom used to force feed me liver & I hated it. But strangely as an adult I found that I actually love it it & now even prefer it over steak.
Hot sauce for breakfast..... your guts must be made from angle iron Simon. 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶
You missed the retro Kona from your equipment check....loving it!
Hi Simon, just joined your channel. I am going to start bike camping. What is the name of the cloth you used to start the fire and who makes it. Great video & tonight I will be binging on your videos. Thank you
