Guitar Improvisation Tips 10: Soloing Over Changes pt3
Welcome to the tenth part of a new series of guitar improvisation and phrasing tips.
Continuing from our previous lesson, we look at an accessible way to get into soloing over non-diatonic chord changes by taking the same chord type (in this case, minor 7th chords) and moving them up and in intervals of minor thirds. For example: spending 2 bars on Am7, 2 bars on Cm7, 2 bars of D#m7 and 2 bars of F#m7. This forces us to play into the harmony of each chord. We can begin by playing slower subdivisions, such as half notes and working our way up to 8th or 16th notes. It’s a fun way to practice!
I let the backing track run throughout the video and at the end, so you can try out some of the ideas for yourself.
Please note that there is no TAB for this lesson as all of the licks are improvised (including the mistakes!)
