Thanks for playing this Johnny! Unlike Mighty No. 9, I have complete faith in this game and Iga's team. This is 100% true Castlevania at heart. That boss fight looked like something straight out of Order of Ecclesia. Hope there are boss medals!
You know you failed as a game developer when a 15 minute demo is better than the entirety of your product with a 4 million dollar budget. This game looks very promising, and as a fan of Symphony of the Night, this hits all the right spots with me. It even has a backdash! I'm definitely picking this game up at launch.
I've read that apparently the boss is a male monster based on the Vepar in old demonic myth. It controls the seas, and in this version, probably uses the curvy female facade to attract sailors.
This game made me realize that because a lot of the Castlevania games were released on handhelds (Aria and Dawn I'm thinking of), they didn't have a lot of different controls to use. And Symphony of the Night, if I recall, was a pre-analog PS1 game. When I saw the Trigger shard using the right analog stick, I immediately realized that that's a new way of using controls, and that now they're mapping multiple things to multiple different buttons, and I'm really excited now! This looks like it's really taking advantage of things Castlevania hasn't done before and it can really be the next step in the series!
RUclips randomly recommend this video to me. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. SotN is one of my favorite games of all time. I am 100% sold on this game already, can't wait!
At 10:15 it should be noted that each slot seems to have a different function. Trigger, directional, enchant and familiar. I'd assume putting the fire cannon on enchant adds fire to your regular attack or gives you a creature that follows you on familiar.
Thanks for showing this off. I think the game looks pretty good. I was worried about the whole polygonal look, but it looks like the camera is zoomed out enough to where your main character looks nice and fluid in motion, almost looking 2D-esque.
I've watched 4 different videos, including this one, of Bloodstained. I find it very interesting that it was received by all of these people at the same time, and they all recorded the video shortly after receiving it, some time at night. You could almost say it was the Ritual of the Night.
Couple things I noticed about this game are the first shard you get is clearly the bullet souls from Aria an Dawn which along with the backdash could prove abuseable for those that know those games. Familiars get their own slot which is good since I hated having to choose between having a Familiar or something that might be useful at that time in Aria, Dawn, and Ecclesia. The boss actually appears before you fight it at several points during the level which is interesting. Also while you could attack her stomach face that doesn't do as much damage as aiming higher with her face seeming the weakest that and she seems resistant to water and fire. The bestiary will most likely list what enemies you have defeated are weak and resistant to and that may tie into unique death animations along with them being affected in some way.
There also seems to be damage type for weapons. I noticed that Seamas take more damage from the longsword despite being weaker than the kung-fu shoes. Also, if you pay close attention, you'll notice that equipment for Miriam's feet like the shoes are reflected on her model. Same applies for head equipment, but not body equipment.
The 3D makes everything kinda blend with each other. The character and enemies stand out less from the terrain, the interactable items and surfaces on screen are less distinct from the background. I'm hoping there will be graphics touches in the future, it is giving me some very unsettling Mighty No.9 vibes.
I'm going to presume a good handful of animations are placeholders cos she totally has the Alucard Symphony Of The Night turn when walking. Kinda wish it looked a bit closer to the concept art as that 2D drawing looked fabulous, oh well. Hope the content is great, the fundamental gameplay looks solid thus far.
She looks so adorable with back hopping . Also I am sure some people will just put the demo on the internet so people who haven't backed this can play it too.
Doubt they'll see this, but thank you Iga and Inti Creates for giving us a great demo, I absolutely loved it and everything was great. Best surprise I've had in my inbox in awhile.
ATM this looks a little barebones, but it still looks like they want to really put in the effort and take away some of the stigma of crowd funded games after MN9. This is worth keeping an eye on
I did a Google on that boss Vepar. Apparently its a demon that takes the form of a mermaid in mythology. So they did some of their own twists to design and made...that. For a second I thought it was the Greek Monster Scylla to be honest.
DAT BOSS THO... just like the Giga Mermaid in Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, they KNOW we ain't lookin' away from that. XD God damn it, Igarashi and WayForward. lol. THAT aside, I have legit interest in this game... and I've never ACTUALLY played a Castlevania game before... is that weird?
its never to late to start bro, you can begin with symphony of the night, its the first of the "igavania" titles, albeit he only co-directed that one pretty much every 2D castlevania game iga produced is great, harmony of dissonance, aria of sorrow, dawn of sorrow, portrait of ruin and order of ecclessia
+Ross man Yeah, I got a GBA. I've heard good things about that particular game. I guess I can start there or with the classic Castlevanias to experience the beginnings for myself.
So far the only kickstarter game that has flopped is MN9. Everything else so far's been great. Freedom Planet, A Hat In Time, Undertale(alot of people can debate on that, i'm just using it as an example), Yooka-Laylee, Nefarious(if you don't know about it, look it up, it's pretty cool.), Shantae Half-Genie Hero, Shovel Knight and now this. All of these are getting some pretty high praise for the most part.
Im so glad that I asked the bank to return the money I wasted on Mighty no 9 after I got banned from the forums for a silly reason and gave it to Iga for this game.
Also, if you get Kung-fu boots as a weapon, I can only hope later in the game you find a weapon that just lets you go Chun-Li on some boss and Lightning Leg them to submission.
So the game as it stands looks like a mixture of the best elements of Symphony of the Night and Chronicles of Sorrow. The artstyle is slightly anime for the time being but it's still being refined as the updates go. The finished game is supposed to have an absolutely massive amount of content. We were given an estimate of 1600+ rooms for the castle in the main adventure, along with side modes including a minigame where you rampage as boss characters and a procedurally generated roguelike adventure mode. We're also supposed to have three characters to play as a la the Saturn version of Symphony, and right now it looks like the other characters are Gebel (not-Dracula) and Zangetsu (Samurai Belmont). I will admit I'm very worried that Igarashi and his team are biting off far more than they can chew with all this promised content, but if they can pull this off it may have more replay value than damn near any other 2D adventure game in the last two decades. Hope you give this game a sizable, full review when it comes out, Johnny. I am fully enjoying what I've backed.
Seeing this demo, I feel very confidant about where the game is going and at ease with supporting it. Sure, it rips off of Castlevania hard but I wanted a Symphony of the Night clone and that's pretty much what I'm getting. My only issue is that sometimes the ledges in the background are hard to see but I'm willing to overlook that because the game is gorgeous.
Ay Dios santo, Johnny it's been awhile since I seen a let's play of yours, but after watching this, I will subscribe to your let's play channel now. XD
Juan, you should check: Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight. Many people say that it is a superb Metroidvania game + Dark Souls vibes. Even if it's just a spotlight =D
I was just rewatching your sotn lone play through (you should do more alone your very entertaining when you talk to yourself) and even the first time watching made me really want to get that game and this is no different
What are you on about? Did you not see the gameplay and how it's clearly a 2D sidescroller? Maybe what you meant was that you wanted sprites, instead of a 3D model in a 2D environment, which is still a weird complaint.
julio lima Yeah, I know what you mean, Odin Sphere is a beautiful game. honestly I would prefer it, but sadly, sprites take too much time to draw, making 3D models is more manageable, specially for an Indie game.
To be honest, it looks a bit more colorful I thought it would ends up ! Still not as colorful as the gorgeous 2D concept arts, but this isn't bad ! Gameplay-wise it looks quite solid. Obviously I'm keeping my guard up (if you know what I mean) but it looks promising and the basics seem to be covered, that much I can say !
I'd say that it looked great as is, but I think it has room for improvement: a Item hotkey would be very useful, make the animations a tad smoother, and hopefully the rest of the game looks slightly less muddy. Also, it'd be cool if Armour and accessories affected your character model.
Sad that my crappy computer can't run this. At least I get to watch it here. Can't wait for the real version. I've been Metroidvania starved since Order of Ecclesia.
Bloodstained AKA Symphony of the Night starring a sexy lady with cool tattoos. So far 10/10.
sounds like order of ecclesia!
Basically shanoa before she grew her hair out
Super Pixelhans ..... shit you're right
As long as there's no inverted castle.
How about a sideways castle? Revolutionary!
Now if only Hideo Kojima would make a "Not Metal Gear" Indie game
Well, he's making Death Stranding with Sony. And even if it's not exactly like Metal Gear, we've seen him make other good games in different genres.
can't forget zone of the enders
Area of the Finishers.
There's that not Silent Hills game I guess...
Whil not from Kojima, there now is UnMetal.
Thanks for playing this Johnny! Unlike Mighty No. 9, I have complete faith in this game and Iga's team. This is 100% true Castlevania at heart. That boss fight looked like something straight out of Order of Ecclesia. Hope there are boss medals!
I dunno about you, but I think the heroine of Bloodstained is very attractive.
Well, there was no way that couldn't sound creepy.
I agree
I like where this is going :D
+TheSkully343 GET REDY FOR PR0N
Fuck yes! XD
Sadly I agree
Please don't suck, please don't suck, please don't suck. I've been following this game since its announcement, pleeeeaaase don't suck
Buddy, do I have good news for you.
Here's hoping Bloodstained and other Kickstarter games will be much more than "Better than nothing."
This game made me realize that because a lot of the Castlevania games were released on handhelds (Aria and Dawn I'm thinking of), they didn't have a lot of different controls to use. And Symphony of the Night, if I recall, was a pre-analog PS1 game.

Linneus No no, this is NOT Castlevania
mazrimalthor Well yeah. It feels EXACLY like a Castlevania game. It’s just not a Castlevania game
Boobstained: Ritual of the Wank.
Abstained Ritual of the Bank.
SoulTrain: Ritual of the Funk
Cumstained: Ritual of dem titties
Fapstained: Tentacle of the Rape
RUclips randomly recommend this video to me. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. SotN is one of my favorite games of all time. I am 100% sold on this game already, can't wait!
That boss is something that I will NEVER look away....
same ~
And there's nothing wrong with that ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
same son

Kinda reminds me of an anglerfish when you really think about it.
At 10:15 it should be noted that each slot seems to have a different function. Trigger, directional, enchant and familiar.
I'd assume putting the fire cannon on enchant adds fire to your regular attack or gives you a creature that follows you on familiar.
Been dying to see actual gameplay of this for a while. Happy that I saw on your channel first.
I love Johnny's reaction to the random power-up at 4:07.
Thanks for showing this off. I think the game looks pretty good. I was worried about the whole polygonal look, but it looks like the camera is zoomed out enough to where your main character looks nice and fluid in motion, almost looking 2D-esque.
14:54 SO thats where the budget for Mighty no 9 went.
This looks great, the layout of the maps, hidden rooms, shards and weapons... this really looks like the Castlevania that we need this days
Looks phenomenal and it is better than I expected. Thanks for sharing your play through of the demo.
Was listening to this as background noise. Then I heard "HOLY KNOCKERS!" and immediately had to stop what I was doing XD
Well this is better than nothing, I guess.
lol
MUCH better! xD
It was a mistranslation, Inafune never said that
gamerant.com/mighty-no-9-creator-owns-all-the-problems/
Still doesn't make it any less memeworthy.
I've watched 4 different videos, including this one, of Bloodstained. I find it very interesting that it was received by all of these people at the same time, and they all recorded the video shortly after receiving it, some time at night. You could almost say it was the Ritual of the Night.
Oh boy! I can watch this while I wait for a tornado to swallow me up!
Woooo
sydney boys?
Johnny discovers back dashing. He is now a speed runner. I backed this at the $150 level with a second physical copy just coz. Anticipation is steady.
4:09 Oh awesome, Bloodstained is using the Devil May Cry method of acquiring new stuff!
I really like the animations for obtaining shards and leveling up. They really catch the eye.
I like how he started to talk about not being able to ignore a powerup guy while he ignored a powerup guy
I'm getting more of an order of ecclesia vibe from this game instead of symphony of the night with how the heroine interacts with her power ups.
That's easily one of the best Castlevania s loved the difficulty and powers
More like aria of sorrow with all those souls upgrades, but either way I'm fine with that as both were awesome metroidvanias.
The 3D makes everything kinda blend with each other. The character and enemies stand out less from the terrain, the interactable items and surfaces on screen are less distinct from the background. I'm hoping there will be graphics touches in the future, it is giving me some very unsettling Mighty No.9 vibes.

Looks absolutely incredible, everything I've been craving since completing Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia.
I saw you cancelling the attack ending animation and knew that the demo was in good hands.
The level up pause should be shortened a bit, and hopefully there's a run item later, but so far it looks awesome, and gorgeous too.
This is the kind of Castlevania successor I've been yearning for.
ATM this looks a little barebones, but it still looks like they want to really put in the effort and take away some of the stigma of crowd funded games after MN9. This is worth keeping an eye on
Considering I had no idea what this was beforehand(and Konami is now a professional Soccer game developer) I'm actually really excited for this.
The way that crystal shard just impaled you reminded me of Devil May Cry
I did a Google on that boss Vepar. Apparently its a demon that takes the form of a mermaid in mythology. So they did some of their own twists to design and made...that. For a second I thought it was the Greek Monster Scylla to be honest.
Yay! the return of spotlights!
Another Bloodstained video tonight? That was fast. Some might say, Jim 'n John's fast.
DAT BOSS THO... just like the Giga Mermaid in Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, they KNOW we ain't lookin' away from that. XD God damn it, Igarashi and WayForward. lol.

if got a gba , i highly recommend aria of sorrow
+Ross man
Yeah, I got a GBA. I've heard good things about that particular game. I guess I can start there or with the classic Castlevanias to experience the beginnings for myself.
***** if you go for castlevania, 1 and 3 are widely regarded as the best on the NES, 3 in particular aged very well
Wow, this looks great. Can't wait to see how the final product fares, this demo is amazing to say the least.
14:56 Well I can't say I was expecting this.
2 Videos in 2 days? What an honor!
Also, if you get Kung-fu boots as a weapon, I can only hope later in the game you find a weapon that just lets you go Chun-Li on some boss and Lightning Leg them to submission.
I was hoping that Koji Igarashi's kickstarter project won't suffer the same fate as Keiji Inafune's miserable project.
Definitely picking this game up when it comes out. I really like it's art style and- *video hits **14:54* ....Is it too late to back this game?

To quote Matt "WOAHHHH LOOK AT THEM HOOTERS!"
My god, that is some fantastic character animations.
I'm a guy who has only play the original Castlevania. I'm looking forward to this.
I will say I've never been into castlevania games but honestly this looks like something I would like
Oh boy! not castlevania!
I'm gonna buy Not!Castlevania at launch.
NotCastlevania: Orchestra of the Dusk
Not!Castlevania: Notes of Twilight.
I Can't Believe Its Not Castlevania!
NotCastlevania: Aria of Konami
I didn't see this game at E3, unless there was something in the concourse hall
Already impressed in what we've got this early on. I'm looking forward to the game. It's a new Castlevania which is all I want it to be.
According to it's name, those chimera heads were in fact the very same monsters from Castlevania.
Holy knockers. Jhonny 2016. Even I was going holy hell those bongos are just god daaaaaamn
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
Back dashing, damage boost, mapping buttons, this game will be very fun to speedrun, I tell you!
I can't handle all these Johnny videos aaaaahhhhh
This looks excellent! Definitely going to pick this up when it's released!
Loving the progress so far, just wish everyone would stop comparing it to the sorrow games. It's a reimagined Shanoa dammit!
Juan, you should check: Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight. Many people say that it is a superb Metroidvania game + Dark Souls vibes. Even if it's just a spotlight =D
A nice trip down to memory lane.
I was just rewatching your sotn lone play through (you should do more alone your very entertaining when you talk to yourself) and even the first time watching made me really want to get that game and this is no different
Hey johnny are going to be the one playing Aria of sorrow for BSC and/SGB cause that's my favorite castlevania.
That would be awesome!
4:10 Reminds me so much of tales of Xillia 2's Chromatus transformation
Sort of. Ludger usually stabs people other than himself, though.
+CrimsonSpirit I mean at the beginning of the game, ludger transformed into his chromatus to kill Julius. mainly the animation.
this looks already far better than mighty #9 at ANY point in its life
That music is great as hell. I bought the ps4 collectors edition of this game
BACKDASHING... cool good work sir johnny my first youtuber of all time
Oh my... the boss looks like she could be in monster musu!!
It's cool that they're doing metroidvania games again...but what about retrovanias?
Hey Johnny, any thoughts on marathoning the handheld Castlevanias at some point?
I really did enjoy this demo. It does run really smooth on my machine, but it looks like you don't need a super powerful machine to run it.
Its the return of back dashes! I'm happy.
I just wished I had the chance to back it up too but I found it WAY too late since I would KILL to play that demo right now
Hey fun fact mighty no.9 has a 4 hour long credit sequence for its 70,000 backers
I do not kid by the way
Just got my demo downloaded. Looks like I'm going to have some fun...
ohhhhhhh man this looks great :D
I'm definitely going to pick this up once it's out
Holy shit! that stomache face fish siren monster had jiggle physics.
I can't wait, I backed this game day one. I was on that train with everyone else. This game looks so dam good.
This game looks promising so far and it sounds like you had a good time with it. "Holy knockers!" made me laugh.
i am a little disappointed that is 3d and not 2d but hey i will take what i can get
What are you on about? Did you not see the gameplay and how it's clearly a 2D sidescroller?
Maybe what you meant was that you wanted sprites, instead of a 3D model in a 2D environment, which is still a weird complaint.
BelphegorXVI why? Yes I wanted 2d sprites but how is that Weird?
+julio lima
Because it still works the same way as if it was sprites.
It's just how it's made, that's different.
BelphegorXVI just because it works the same way does not make it the same way I am talking about looks you know kind of like odin sphere
julio lima
Yeah, I know what you mean, Odin Sphere is a beautiful game.
honestly I would prefer it, but sadly, sprites take too much time to draw, making 3D models is more manageable, specially for an Indie game.
I enjoyed the demo just as much as you or even more. Really looking forward to the game!
I've been Metroidvania starved since Order of Ecclesia.
getting shards is on par with leveling up in dust
will you review the paper Mario series
Very nice. I've never played a Castlevania game, but I might pick this one up!
This looks pretty good. Also I'm when it comes to Mighty No 9 I'm gonna wait until it goes on sale due to the negative reviews.
looks pretty good. I'm going to have to keep an eye on this one.
