one thing to consider: Spotify will move your followers from one account to another if you write to them about the problem directly, distributors are not really well informed about all the details. I had to change my name as well cause it was the same as someone else and they were very helpful with my followers. I remember when you changed your account you lost your followers, im sure that if you write to them and explain they might move the followers in limbo. Those accounts are still active but not showing
Thank you for this comment! I did end up contacting Spotify about a month after I changed my name, and they transferred my followers over for me. It was around ~300 or so if I remember correctly. Definitely very helpful! They were on top of it very quickly.
Hey Tom! Great video! I have a question though. Do you recommend digital ad agencies to run fb/ig ads for artists as opposed to running the ads themselves?
Hey thank you for watching! I always recommend the DIY approach above everything else, at least at the beginning so you can learn the ropes and know what to look for. But I do think hiring a someone who knows what they're doing to run your ads for you is a good investment. Certainly much better than trying buying playlist placements. A good strategy may be to hire someone to help you in the short term, while also taking the time to learn Facebook ads so you can ultimately do things yourself.
@@tomdupreeiii Thanks Tom! I actually asked because I hired an agency to run an ad campaign for my song and I got terrible results (over $1 per CPC and not even 80 streams after spending $175, which really hurt my wallet). I got better results running it myself but still not at my desires CPC (roughly 0.54 per CPC and spent so far $40). Looking forward to more tips from your channel!
@@NandanMusic yeah those are definitely not good results. Glad you were able to bring the cost down a bit more on your end. Keep after it and it’ll come down even more!
I am a retired academic. Music is a hobby. I appreciate your "scientific" approach and the way you value research. You would make a great graduate school doctor's dissertation supervisor.
Have you thought about investing money to grow an email list? I know you said you want to play the long game with Spotify but the thing is by the time you hit that 5/10yr point Spotify might disappear like MySpace or they’ll be another platform which is the new best thing. Then what happens to all the work you put in to build this? Growing a presence on Spotify is great don’t get me wrong however putting some time and energy into an email list would be extremely powerful. Many platforms will become outdated at some point but since the beginning of the internet email has stayed. Just my 2 cents!
This is a great comment! Email is something I have just started to try to grow. I totally agree. The true value is in building an audience on your own platform. Too much weight put on something you don’t own is risky.
what about platform outdating, is about making legacy, beethoven or m.jackson are uploading their music or updating email list? Focus on making legacy for next gen
Thank you for the sum up. Quick question: When using FB ads, did you have any luck triggering e.g. Release Radar having a huge spike in your streams? If yes, how many listeners did you need to drive in using the ads before it happened? Thank you in advance!
This is a great question. I didn’t have any luck triggering those algorithmic opportunities last year (I honestly didn’t know what to look for for about half the year to begin with). Once I learned what to shoot for I had to go to work figuring out exactly how it all worked. I’ve come to understand that your song’s popularity score is the biggest factor. A score of 20 seems to be the threshold to trigger Release Radar, and a score of 30 seems to be the threshold for Discover Weekly.
Thanks for watching! So, yes and no. I am a full-time musician, and I balance a combination of session work, producing, and touring (not so much in 2020, obviously). Because I am in charge of my own schedule, I am able to devote time to pursuing this whole experiment.
@@tomdupreeiii make sense, thanks for your answer. Btw I don’t know how much time the distribution platform take to send money, but you def will get more income from your 2020 promotion in 2021. The songs released in 2020 getting new streams on their own and maybe the revenue of 2020 4th quarter not fully received yet
As you were talking about ads revenue from RUclips. Ads came on your channel. So I waited entirely for duration of the ads to finish. Because I'm learning from you.
The reality of becoming a successful musician is being in debt and generating less revenue than your expenses until you build a big enough brand and customer base and eventually are extremely profitable. Being broke, grinding it out, until one day you’re rich and famous.
so for this consistently running Ad campaign that runs everyday ... where do you lead people to?? Or where is the best place to lead people to for a consistently running ad -your FB & IG...? or Spotify???
Hey Tom, really liked your videos. I just wanted to let you know, that if you change your name again. Via distributor, it is usually possible to move the entire catalog with it's metrics and followers to the new name. Usually this is handled by someone called the Content manager at platforms like Spotify and Beatport. Also, would like to ask you why aren't you selling or streaming your music in other platforms like Beatport, Apple Music, Traxsource, etc?
Hey dude thanks for the comment! Yeah fortunately it all went down well for me. Every platform moved my profile from the old to the new. I really like your videos on this subject and your determination in this experiment. If I'm free to give a little critique though; I think the big increase in following overall (Spotify, Instagram, etc.) is mostly thanks to your RUclips videos, not FB ads. Besides that, also counting the YT income doesn't feel a 100% accurate to me, cause I feel like the people that click on your videos are artists/managers that are interested in finding ways to independently promote their music. Their goal isn't to start making YT videos, documenting the results of their investments, making extra money off of it that way. I understand that in your particular case it's (of course) no lie that you made 1100 dollars from the adsense that came out of your videos documenting this experiment, but I personally feel that that isn't a realistic representation of what others can expect and that the experiment would've been stronger if that money wasn't seen as a return of the investment. People can leave out that piece of the income themselves of course... and all your tips and experiences throughout the year still hold up, but above are my only critiques. Again, I hope this isn't taken negatively, cause I've really enjoyed your videos, but I just wanted to share my thoughts. Still a thumbs up from me :)
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on this. I appreciate that you feel comfortable sharing your critique. I definitely still stand by everything here for the simple fact that it’s an honest depiction of my journey. I do my beat to present all the information and allow any given person to interrogate in a way that relates it to their own experience. No doubt Instagram growth has been driven largely by RUclips, but the Spotify growth is definitely a result of ads more than anything else. And including those RUclips numbers still feels right to me because it’s a spoke in the wheel of what I’m doing, and all parts should be incorporated into the overall system. I fully appreciate where you’re coming from though. Thank you for watching and for the great comment!
@@tomdupreeiii I like how google ads lets you know depend on your targeting and demo graphic mixed with your budget how many views you will pretentiously get I like that . $300 on playlist push you spend could got 60k more views on RUclips depending on the context and they will only charge your budget once someone has click on your ad and interact with it . I love it and your welcome bro for recommendations
Dude no offense you really need to work on your music first. It is overall average at best. I listened to a few songs and I'm getting what you're trying to achieve, but it isn't enough, especially if your sound design and overall production is not on point. Try to implement song writing techniques of big established artists (try different genres) and I believe you will easier get to the next level.

Thank you for watching and for the great comment!
yea thats cool... but if you want to suceed online than check out what your missing out on.
Oh yeah man. I'm always looking for flaws in my gameplan!
Fb ads is trash compare to google , should do RUclips ads thru google 💯
I’ve used RUclips ads in the past and am planning to dig back into it more this years. Thanks for the recommendation!
I love it and your welcome bro for recommendations
if this video has made 10000 streams over a year after paying 2500 for music promotion it must be broken
I appreciate you sharing your thoughts but I will continue to make what I enjoy and will share my journey along the way.
No offense I like Tom's music
@@tomdupreeiii you’re the man, Tom! Thanks so much for everything you’ve done to help other artists out! I personally don’t know where I’d be without people like you and Andrew Southworth, so I appreciate you taking the time to make these videos as I know how time consuming it can all be. Also, your latest track ‘Lions’ is dope! Keep it up dude!!
@@panamakinal dude, thank you! 🙏🏻
@@STATXMUSIC man this comment is just amazing. Thank you for the kind words, for continuing to watch, and for contributing in the comments. I am grateful!
