The fuel gauge wasn't affected by the elevation, but by the elevation changes. Going up burned more fuel and the fuel range estimates are based on the rate burned over a given time.
I rode the Cherohala Skyway last July and the folage was so dense it blocked the views. I usually ride like a maniac and sightseeing is not my thing. I just noticed it. Plus I was riding my hack.
Hey Phil: awesome video and commentary. I may make a suggestion of one additional road to ride, next time you get to Deals Gap. If you come in from the North end and ride the Dragon, go past Deals Gap, through Robbinsville to where 129 comes to a "T" at US74. Take a left there, heading towards Bryson City, then turn right onto 1310 (Wayah Road) towards Franklin. That's where the Nantahala whitewater put-in is located. Having ridden the Dragon, Cherohala, Hellbender and others there many times, I find that ride very satisfying. Not as intense as the Dragon, more like Cherohala, but extremely scenic with many twists and turns. I don't know why it isn't high on the "biker's list", but the Porsche and Lotus clubs know it, and run it often. There's a very nice yurt village along the way there also. ANd it's just the right length to stop in Franklin for a meal.
Doing my research for heading down from Michigan to ride the tail and surrounding areas. Best vid I’ve found on the u tube. Appreciate the info re the other roads as well!
Riding anywhere in the Smokey’s you better be on your A game! You can ride a lot without riding a lot! You have pay attention and not be site seeing! That is my favorite area to ride but you really have to focus!
If you didn't grow up there, then stay away from there. Or, CTFO when riding roads you've never seen before. There is no trophy waiting for you on the other side.

And going back down burned a lot less gas so the fuel estimate caused the gauge to go back up. Makes total sense, thanks for the comment.
Very cool vid!

Awesome road, one of the best IMO.

Yup, if you want to site see, stop at an overlook area first.
Do the Cherohala Skyway...it's a much better ride. 43 miles of twists and turns!
