  • I show the complete caliber change from .40S&W to .308 Win, including how to change the primer feed system from small pistol primers to large rifle primers. The whole process should not take longer than 20-30 minutes (if you are not filming!). The Dillon XL 650 is very easy to work with if you take your time and follow a few simple steps - start removing from the top and replacing new stuff 'last off - first on'. Leave comments or questions below. Thanks for watching!

      Thanks for comment. I made this vid a few years ago, but it still holds true. I really want to set up a XL750 but I just can't justify the expense. Happy reloading!

    Thank you for all you detail to facts on the different stages of doing a caliber conversion, in all the videos I’ve watched regarding the XL650 this was the first time it was mentioned to change the primer tubes and rams when changing from small to large primers. It solved a problem I was having with small primers jamming, I never changed the primer tube.

      You are Welcome Gus! I tried to get it all in for a complete caliber changeover. There are a lot of parts, but once you understand the machine, you are well ahead of the game. Good luck and keep loading!

    Thank you so much for these videos. I started on an old Dillon 450 my dad got years ago and I only reloaded 45acp. He ended up getting me a xl650 for Christmas and still I only loaded 45acp. I now have the stuff to load a bunch more calibers but just wasn’t understanding a lot of the manual descriptions. Your videos have made me feel more confident and know that I’ve been doing almost everything right. I really do appreciate the help you gave me here.

      Thanks Nick! Glad you enjoyed this video. Please take time to watch all of my XL650 series where I cover all aspects of the loader including some oops moments. There are also some good videos (although older) from OBXSOLWIND and others. We all have the same interest in providing info for beginners on setup, loading and testing. You may also want to read some of the comments and reply's on some of these video where I go into detail answers on what's really needed to reload, as I have changed some of my process over the years (like depiming/resizing on a single stage press and then using a water tumbler to clean the brass...then reloading the clean brass). Good luck and be safe!

    I have had my Dillon 650 for a few years now. I now have enough 223 to take over a third world country by myself. Once my wife an I get set up in our new house (moving back east), I need to order all the bits and pieces for a caliber change to 308. I think I am going to tackle this in a different manner though. Rather than rebuild the primer system when I need to change primer size, I am going to purchase a complete large primer system. That way I only have to swap the small plunger for the large. Then swap the complete small primer system for the large one.. It will cost me more money, but the time saved, and not having to deal with springy things, and small metal balls, is worth the extra money spent. If you like your press half as much as I like mine, you are a well satisfied customer.

    I'm shooting for pleasure also. I have a308 bolt gun and semiautomatic dpms style ar10. so I should be fine with the Dillon dies. I ordered them and the conversion for my 650 plus a quick change powder set up. I seen you had a quick change on every caliber. that will make my life much easier. I appreciate the videos even tho they are few years old I'm learning allot. thanks again

    I've been loading .45ACP with my 650, and am about to venture (for the first time) into rifle reloading. .204 Ruger is going to be my first rifle caliber. Your video de-mystifies the caliber changeover nicely. Thanks.

    I bought another primer feeder assembly only to save time from changing small and large primers. All in all I have two one small and a large one. Very fast change out from one to another two screws to change out.

      Very nice video you make and well explained. You did mentioned takes about half hour to change small primers to large, buy another assembly and takes less five minutes only because the shell plate needs to come off to.

    Appreciate the detail! I've always thought I'd get a Dillon XL 650 for 40 S&W and another head/conversion kit for 223 however your video really shows how much fuss is involved with switching from pistol loads to rifle loads. Thanks! I am now thinking more like a single stage press for rifle (also considering 6.5x284Norma) and a Lee or maybe RCBS for mass pistol production. Buying 2 Lee PRO 1000 presses for $280 each might be the ideal choice for an average shooter new to reloading - all things considered.

    • @216PapaBravo
      @216PapaBravo  8 лет назад

      Thanks for the comment! It really depends on how much you plan to reload. If you plan on a lot of reloading, you will appreciate the Dillon a lot. Yes it can be a little fussy, but remember I was talking you through the process, it was a little slower than I do it without the video production. Also, for some of the 'odd' calibers I still use the RCBS RockChucker single stage press for small batches (less than 50 rounds). Good luck!

    @216PapaBravo  11 лет назад

    If you are loading only .308win and .45ACP the Dillon 1050 might be a better choice. A bigger machine for sure but really tuned to load one size primer (in this case large size primers). If however, you plan to load more calibers in the future the XL650 might be the better choice. I will mention that progressive loaders are more meticulous to set up, but once set up properly work really well. Thanks for the comment and good luck!

    I discovered when loading several rounds of 45 Acp, and using large primers. Some manufacturers use small primers. Luckily I backed off when I felt resistance. This could have turned out badly. I make sure I check all the cases now.

    Thanks for the Video! I'm reloading .308Win most of the Time and I'm still unsure if I should invest in a Progressive Press. If, Dillon would be my first Choice, followed by Hornady. Had nothing but good Results with them but Dillon seems to be more straigt Forward when it comes to Progressives.

    Question: In general how does the 650 handle 308's? Seems like most people run pistol cases through their 650's and not so much large rifle calibers. Can the press handle the torque and stress of resizing those larger cases?

    • @216PapaBravo
      @216PapaBravo  7 лет назад +1

      The short answer is yes, the XL650 can do the bottleneck rifle cases. However, in my case, I use a different process. I deprime and resize all of my rifle cases on a RCBS Rock Chucker single stage press. This is so I can inspect the cases and then see if I need to trim (also checking for cracked cases after resizing). I then clean using a wet tumbler, dry and then reload on the XL650. Thanks for the question!

    Great video. I have had my XL 650 for a long time but have only really loaded for my 445 supermag and totally forgot how to change over to SPP plate and tube. This makes it easy for me to follow. Now off to start reloading 357 mag and some 380... I do have a question about one thing that I have seen other people videos on RUclips about powder spill when the shell plate rotates to the next station. Did you ever have this issue or have you done what others have done a cut or change the spring under the shell plate? Or do you have any other remedies for this? I was just figuring that with 380 and even some 9 mm it might be easier for this spilling to occure.
    thanks

    • @216PapaBravo
      @216PapaBravo  10 лет назад +1

      I have had the same problem with smaller rounds like the 9mm or .380, mostly because the case is so short! What I try to do is twofold...one..I will slow down the upstroke of the machine to make the plate rotation slower, and second with a bullet in my left hand I will 'catch' the brass with my middle finger as it rotates so it doesn't click into place hard. Hope this helps and good luck!

    • @briansupermag3918
      @briansupermag3918 10 лет назад

      Thanks pretty much what I have done also. I even go so far as to cover the top of the brass after it gets the powder charge and rotates to the next stage so it doesn't spill out then let it go as it goes to the powder check station. Then when I raise the handle to lower the rounds I again cover the top of my case till it clicks into the next station for a bullet. It's a pain but I have to say it's a bigger pain cleaning up the spilt powder from under the shell plate.
      Thanks for the videos I enjoyed them. Take care

    I'm curious if you've ever used Federal Large primers in your 650? I try to stick with CCI but have excess supply of Federal, and the pickup tubes and primer tube seem to jam up on me. Wondering if thats the norm or not? Thanks for any input and for the great video.

    • @216PapaBravo
      @216PapaBravo  5 лет назад +1

      Dzee8... No I have not had the problem you describe. I also mostly use CCI primers but do occasionally use Federal and Winchester primers. All I can say is that the primer setup on your press may be a bit dirty (which taking it apart and cleaning all associated parts may help) or a bad batch of primers. Good Luck and thanks for the comment!

    just getting my dies and conversion parts for 308. I appreciate the video. I've seen some guys using the Redding competition seating dies with their 650. the ease of adjustment with the dial looks nice. have you ever tried one? Is there any benefit other than what I mentioned like straighter reloads less run out or anything if you have tried them?. thanks again

    • @216PapaBravo
      @216PapaBravo  7 лет назад +1

      No I have not tried them. Remember I am shooting for pleasure and not competitively. My reloads work well in both my Rem 700 and my LaRue semi-auto, so I am a happy camper! If you need this kind of accuracy then you might look into the seating die from Redding. Thanks for the comment!

    What components would you need to reload .50 Beowulf cartridges on the 650. I see Dillon does not offer a set kit yet.

    I have a question about the primer tube inside the steal safety tube. I noticed yours comes out very easily when changing calibers. The last time I had my primer system off the press, the primer tube would not come out. I was afraid of something breaking if I forced it so I left it be. I suspect I have to remove the primer wheel on the bottom of the priming system but I haven't tried yet. Is there anything I have to do that I may be overlooking when removing the primer tube?
    This is another reason for me to have complete large and small primer systems ready to go when I need to change calibers.
    Thanks in advance.

    • @216PapaBravo
      @216PapaBravo  8 лет назад

      +rdsii64 On my press the primer tube just falls out when I turn it upside down. Yours might be stuck, they should be loose fitting in the steel tube. You msy need to completely disassemble the entire unit to get yours out.

      Thanks for the question Ed! Unfortunately, I don't and haven't reloaded those rounds. I am sure if you checked on RUclips you may find those who have posted videos on these rounds. I probably would not load those on a progressive press (even though they are straight walled cases). I would load on a single stage press like the RCBS Rock Chucker. You would have more control over the process. Hope this helps and good luck!

    one more question do you have a powder check for every caliber or do you just swap it each time

    • @216PapaBravo
      @216PapaBravo  7 лет назад

      Quiz me anytime! I have only one powder check tool and swap between tool heads. I have purchased extra powder dies (they are used for both the powder drop and the powder check station) so each tool head is set up for the check to be transferred when I change calibers. Thanks for the question!

      Yes you get both sizes of primer equipment to change over from small to large primers. However, you only get one primer load tube in each size. (I bought two extra of each so I could load 3 tubes and keep on loading!) Thanks for the question!
