    Wow. Love love the vlog & the history. My grandfather fought in France World War One at the age of 16. He was tall & got away with lying about his age. He was in the English army & was from Leicester. I have a photo of him in France Listening to you I was amazed he survived. Your right about being young & not interested in his story & off course I wasn’t into history then as I am as I got older. How I wish I had asked ? He was in the 2nd world war with Australia. Again lied about his age to get in. I have his records for 2nd. His first world one records were destroyed during the2nd world war. Thanks for a fantastic vlog The scenery, market places & buildings are amazing. What a beautiful country is France. Cheers Lynne Victoria Australia 🇦🇺🐨👍🏻😍

      @getawaygeese  7 месяцев назад +1

      That’s amazing - I am sure there will be a way if tracking his military record with his name and regiment etc somehow
      The First World War was brutal ( they all are ) but I think it was the stalemate and just sending men out
      It hit us a few times on this trip when you are faced with personal stories
      Thanks for watching

    What an amazing museum! The war experience so well portrayed…thanks for sharing! I really appreciate the lengths you go to, to include the history of where you’re traveling. Since I’m a backpacker, I travel on foot…it’s a fantastic way to really get a feel of the country you’re in and its people. I love that you cover a short distance each day, (about what I do on trail by foot,) and leave time to actually explore.

    • @getawaygeese
      @getawaygeese  7 месяцев назад

      It’s one of the biggest lessons - you always think you have to drive 3 hours when in reality a different view and maybe history is just around the next corner. It’s taught us to slow down and when you do history can be absorbed easily. Jane does a lot more reading than I do mind you lol

      @getawaygeese I know you said in a previous comment that you would like to visit Poland, I visited Auschwitz while I was there last year, wow that so worth it.
      I wouldn't want to go again, but so glad I went, l don't mind admitting it, I was moved to tears.
      Yes, Poland is a fantastic country, the Baltic coast, Gdynia, Sopot, Gdansk beautiful. Then the forests, lakes and the mountains in the south. You must go. 👍🐸

      @@getawaygeese we are well, thank you. Just got stuff going on with family members being ill unfortunately, not my sister, she's OK, but my brother and also his wife too and with Nanook as well, I've just found it hard to get any editing done or to have the focus to watch much YT either. It's been a pretty crap couple of years unfortunately. But I'm trying to get back into it again so I will hopefully be watching and commenting more again.😊 Hope you're both well too and had a great Christmas.

    I hear many Van lifers speaking about heat in summer months. What about solar powered mini fans which you can clip onto the inside of the car and each have one because they are so small.

    • @getawaygeese
      @getawaygeese  7 месяцев назад +1

      I guess it’s all down to the solar panels and where they go driving in the day - we do use usb powered ones but that just pushes the warm air around - what I created pulled in colder night air whereas just a fan in a van is moving hot air around
      Thanks for watching and above all commenting as it’s a great discussion

    Good morning, Good morning! the General said,
    when we met him last week on our way to the Line.
    Now the soldiers he smiled at, are most of 'em dead,
    And we're cursing his staff for incompetent swine.
    He's a cheery old card, said Harry to Jack, as they slogged up to Arras with rifle and pack.
    But he did for them both, with his plan of attack.
    The General, by Siegfried Sassoon.
