Starting in the centre making our way to the 'bund' we come across all sorts in this episode... From scams, food, friendly locals and all round getting sense for what the city is like. Beijing, wuhan and alot of others are on my list so I'm excited to release more episodes very soon.

The Chinese government doesn’t have time to monitor any ordinary people’s actions, it’s busy to build the country and improve the quality of life of people.

Believe me, the streets of Tokyo and the streets of London are full of cameras, but no one is targeting them or talking about them as news. But the Western media has been criticizing China's street cameras, so China's street cameras have become the focus of discussion.

Will, an Indian here who has lived in China. Why are you so bothered with cameras? How are they affecting you? They are there for security. If a crime is committed, the cameras would help to nab the criminal. I'm sure you wouldn't want a gun fight to break out, or get mugged or sit through drug deal underway at a fuel station because, "it's a free world", right? What is the privacy you are talking about? You are free to walk around with a semi-automatic rifle, or a handgun prominently tucked to your holster which can actually scare people (and kills a lot). You call that freedom. But you get so uncomfortable when someone has cameras all around so that no one scare anyone and people can move around in peace. Isn't it? What is the privacy you are talking about? Nobody is bothered if you get cozy with someone, take photos or kiss. Chinese authorities have much more work to do that tracking people kissing, photoshooting. But if plan to roam around in nothing but underwear, bikini, or a thong or body paint or whatever, then not just China, Asia itself is not the place for you.
Well said!!
Haha I found lots of Indian who are very friendly towards China. Thank you Indian brother/sister, it’s not like what the media said we were hostile towards each other and compete with each other all the time. People are people, lovely and friendly. I like that!

Of course they CAN be used for surveillance purposes and in some cases they ARE used for surveillance. But that is not the point. The problem is, as long as something in China theoretically CAN be used for nefarious purposes, "China" is automatically found guilty, no due process or evidential standard needed. Nobody cares about Chinese laws that constrain the police from using private data and everyone from the West seems to automatically assume that the Chinese, who are almost like aliens to them, must be thinking and behaving in completely opposite ways. No, the Chinese are just humans like people everywhere else. We do not need a totally different mindset to understand China. Just use some common sense.

That's right, he asked you twice whether you're cold or not. If you don't understand Chinese at all, you can actually say hello. The vast majority of Chinese people can understand yes, no, hello, goodbye, and numbers up to ten. Although saying hello in Chinese can indeed gain a lot of goodwill, people will mistakenly think that you know Chinese, which will cause trouble for future communication. So, you can simply say hello, which is just a suggestion.
just some tips 😅
1 - just say 'ni hao' to greet someone. no one says 'ni hao ma' as you can probably tell by now from replies.
2 - most people who approach you will just be curious and want to say hello or even take a picture since a lot of people at tourist areas are not locals to shanghai but tourists from other parts of china. for many chinese, they never seen a foreigner in person. if anyone approaches you for anything other than a greeting, they are trying to sell you something so to get rid of them, say 'bu yao' which means I don't want.
3 - the cameras are for security like in any other major city around the world. per capita, there are actually more cameras in london than anywhere in china. especially as a foreigner and a man, you can walk around at 2am and be totally safe even in a totally dark alley. you will even see women or teenagers out and about alone at night. only fools prone to propaganda will believe they can keep track of what over a billion people do daily. as long as you don't do anything stupid and obviously illegal, no one will care. no one will care if you are filming all day so just enjoy.
Cool
It’s sad to see you still have a stereotype about China. I’m not certain if you will change your mind after visiting China. Honestly, it’s so hard to maintain a safety in a country with 1.4 billion people, but China makes it. Just my opinion, setting cameras is one of effective solutions on crimes prevention. It’s not that good to judge a country without really knowing its background, history and culture. Your channel would not be on my recommendation channel list. But, safe travel.

The surveillance cameras are very unlikely to be tracing every pedestrians, because it is impossible and unnecessary, at least for now. The police will investigate the video clips for evidence when something has happened, or watch in real-time if they are searching for certain people. Shanghainese here! Welcome to Shanghai! Not sure if you've figured it out yet, but in China most things can be done, including payment, through either WeChat or Alipay. I was told that it's actually very easy for foreigners to set up an Alipay account and link their credit cards. Maybe you can try that next time. Not many people still use cash here these days. Also, the amount of electric cars isn't as high as you think. I would say about 50% are electric now? You can tell by their number plates. Blue plates mean combustion and green plates mean electric or hybrid. By the way that one occasion you heard a lot of car horns is because you were crossing the road under red light. It's not your fault, as I can see that you were just following other people, but we typically don't do that here. In terms of the streets, Nanjing Road is probably the most touristy place you can find in Shanghai. It's a good destination for a first-timer, but it doesn't represent nowadays Shanghai particularly well. For example, those "big iconic Chinese signs" you mentioned. They were built about 30 years ago when Shanghai had its first boost in economy. We don't really build them anymore, and you will find them in large quantities only on Nanjing Road now. Nanjing Road is also probably the only place in Shanghai where you will find scammers, unfortunately, so do be careful when you are there. Anyway, nice video, and enjoy your trip! Don't ask around how are you if you're not prepared to have a conversation with few sentences, since it's rude to walk away without taking any notice of their reply. It’s a one-way hubris.
If you are still in Shanghai, then you gotta try their pancake called Jian Bing. It's available everywhere.
come on, mate. the more I watch your video the more peeved I become. You are not being followed the entire way! What are you talking about? You keep mentioning the cameras. so annoying.
如果警方不立案,乙方无权复查。
Can't say I blame him. One look n you can tell he's a totally brainwashed dude.
take off your arrogance and ignorance. Are you the camera fan?
You offended, wumao? Can't handle any criticism of China?
@@loremasteringwion9930 可以放下你的偏见吗?😅
@@user-ky3vk1bm5g And you don't have any prejudice of Westerners? Chinese people don't have any prejudice of Westerners? At least we speak the truth about China, while Chinese media constantly lies about the west. Who was it that invented the lie that COVID 19 came from the US to same face and blame the USA?

@@bldomain What are you, a pissed off wumao, so hilarious.
Your voice is exactly the same as Chris Hemsworth. Without looking at the picture, I would have thought Thor is talking .😂😂
Honestly ,I don't think you're a travelling soul kind of guy ,rather felt like a brainwashed western media consumer ,out for news .
Don't be so biased and take it in as it is .P.s if all you didn't like is the number of cameras (which per Capita is lower than UK). .you might have had fun .show us the traveller not the biased reporter
Are you an important guy ? What is the fuss about public sueveilance cam? The irony is you are also filming
True. In fact, it is not easy to film and do RUclips video in many other countires. Has anyone there stopped him filming? Western countries' media play an important role in affecting their thinking.
when you are in public places like on the street, it is not a private place, so no privacy ?:)
The cameras are set up in public places for security. I don't think they bother people's privacy. But because of them people feel free and safe walking in the street. No worries about pickpockets or crimes.
At the beginning of the video to say hello to the man, he is very positive response, asking if you are cold, you did not reply, he asked again 😂
Many so call "police" in tourist vlogs I watched recently are just securities, like neighborhood watchman, usually in uniforms look similar to law enforcements but they are not. Authentic police are always with Police uniform, and are not so often seem outside of those crowded hotspots. Considering the large population, China actually has a slightly lower than average law enforcement officer per capita (Wikipedia).
Also, some cameras at the Bund in the video are used for statistics on people counting. Right at that location in the video, there was a stampede in the last night of 2014, resulted in 36 casualties.
Anyway, nice adventure you got! 👍
Cameras are good. Security & safety are top priority. Come to S'pore , we have a lot of cameras too.
Small correction its 590 billion dollars GDP and no unless you are a criminal or a potential nuisance, cameras are the safety assets of a metropolis let alone a hyper metro like Shanghai or any other 100+ hyper cities in china and over 400+ normal metropolis in China. You should not worry about a gazillion cameras since they protect you from all and anything.
I hate to say this, but most of the food you were looking at there are for tourists/foreign visitors, really.
Shanghai Tower sounds like 上海滩 (shanghaiTang) which means the Bund in Chinese
Interesting
Another great video! Appreciate you having the balls to adventure travel and sharing the journey with us.
Agree, but needs to know more of the place.
You think that the Chinese government just spends their time tracking everyone? 😂
Do you prefer police with guns on the street / schools and your tax money pay for it like in the US or cameras in public space?? If you don’t do anything Illegal. How does the cameras in busy public space any different from the cameras/ phones everyone is holding / filming With ? ?
It’s like saying You are spying because your are filming everywhere you go.
Cool
Hey Dude, The woman who sold flower tea didn't understand your meaning actually, She think you need a cup of flowers not a cup of tea😂
I am not sure why tourists from the West always pick on China becauses of the number of CCTV cameras installed in public areas? Other major cities or popular destinations in West such as London, NYC, Tokyo and Seoul but no one seems care. In fact, London has the most concentrated numbers of CCTV cameras installed in the city in the world. I think this has a lot to do with how the mainstream media in the West portrays China.
You are acting kinda condescending
Thanks for watching!
19:08 You should be put in jail already for not wearing a proper pants in a winter if the cameras/police really track you all the way through.
🤣Hahaha, absolutely right
the first greeting he gets is "Are you cold?" from a vendor
Ohhhh
Why are you being tracked? Are you that important?
Everyone is
I watch your vedio first time from Chinese APP called 哔哩哔哩 , then I come to RUclips follow you . just bcz you are little interesting, like you dont do some plans before go to China, once time you got idea going China, then you go❤.so crazy.
Cameras are meant to facilitate the arrest of people who have made mistakes,so.....
If you want to greet people, you can say "Ni Hao!". When you say "Ni Hao Ma?", it means that you are expecting an answer from the ones you speak to. "Ni Hao Ma?" means "are you good or not?".
Thanks
1:12 The guy was ask you. Do you feel cold ?😂
Well actually your privacy is worthy to nobody😘There are so many things more important than your privacy
Let it slide... he's just a young inexperienced dude overestimating his self-importance 😂
Looking forward to nore China trips man!! New fan here! Also lived in Shanghai for 2 years. One of my favorite cities!
你是来上海找摄像头的吗?
I don't know why you're so sensitive to cameras Do you have a criminal record or are you a fugitive from another country
Yep

Go to bathroom there is privacy
Yeah, better stay in the toilet 144 hours than go back to his precious home, which is 100% privacy guaranteed.
Thanks
Hahahah, nice video🎉 and you are quite relaxed to interact with locals, i enjoyed it. Even though we dont speak english mostly, but most of us are very warm and helpful
