this game and gtr 2 are beautiful examples of what racing games should be, plus its on one of the best racing sim engines ever made
This game/sim has held up so damn well. I bought this when I bought my first gaming PC back in 2008 (that I'm still on, but not for much longer) along with GTR 2, GTR Evo, RFactor and Richard Burns Rally (main reason I bought a PC was to play racing sims).
Due to having so many new sims to play, discovering Steam and back buying pretty much every game that appealed to me that I'd missed out on due to not owning a gaming PC (my brother owned one back in the late 90s, but I didn't play it very much), GT Legends didn't get very much play time. I really need to go back and play it again. I loved it but I just got distracted.
Having a large game collection can be both a blessing and a curse. It's a blessing because I'll never run out of stuff to play. It's a curse because I have such a huge backlog of games, I don't know if I'll ever get around to playing them all (which makes me feel guilty).

I know those tracks really well because I started the GT Legends career many times, but was unable to finish it.
These days I play it with the Altbierbude tracks/cars updates on their servers, and I also enjoy HistorX and Power&Glory mods, and I would enjoy seeing those, too.
Great to see this classic title getting some exposure. While the cheat was out by the time GTL was released in the US - with the earlier release in Europe the cheat didn't come out for a couple of months and many of us completed the challenges. It really is a great way to explore the huge variety of cars on offer.
But the old myth of the cars running on modern tyres got repeated. The Dunlop Vintage tyres used in TC65/GTC65 appeared way back in 1970. They use the same molds as the originals and are designed to give the same levels of grip as the originals or the cars would be more prone to rolling over and suspension and hubs would be more highly stressed.
1 whole year after being promised a GTR2 series we get... not that. ;)

Well, I never played this game. But I did play a few conversions from GTL on rfactor. Now it's time to see what the original looks like :p

Probably my most favorite racing game.
MY first exposure to Simbin was when they put out a free download that altered EA's F1 2001 to GTR. Then their CD's came out and I got every one, despite Starforce (as I feel the cold hand of Death clutch my heart at the memories of that horror). Back then, their love for such great classics was obvious.
And I played the crap out of GTL (and GTR2), definitely one of my all time favorites. Great memories, even the insane understeer of the Vette. I just had to try all the cars, hence the unknown but massive number of hours in this sim. Strangely enough, my favorite car was the little Lotus Cortina.
Thanks for the memories Matt, I had stepped away from online racing for that period in time, and GTL kept my love of sim racing alive during those dark days in my life.

From where I sit my original boxed copy is plainly visible and has been patiently calling me for almost 7 years now to be reinstalled/played again. What's amazing to me while watching you run the first two races is that I immediately 'knew' every upcoming turn, which blew my mind because back when I was playing it I always had to have some kind of reference (even a hand drawn track layout) handy.
It was the diversity of the cars available that hooked me - then I lost myself in all the mods for years afterwards (which I still have 'somewhere' in the stacks of unmarked burned CD's).
I love this! By coincidence I did the same a few weeks ago, I reinstalled GTL and started over from scratch - and I was impressed by how well it still holds up and how much fun it is. Currently in the middle of stage C, got my Vette and am struggling a bit with it. But up to that point (and I suspect beyond) everything is doable with Professional difficulty.
Regarding the wheel: I set my DFGT to 900 degrees, then in-game lock to 34.5 (maximum) in all cars. Rotation of the two wheels matches, and everything feels good.

Great, someone pubblicizing the carreer mode of GTL. Trust us guys, GTL is a badassly good game, and when you mod it try to don't broke it. Yes, is possible to create your own custom category for your custom cars, I don't know why so few modders used that: I don't want to install a car that is twice faster than original cars!
I've heard of GT Legends. But, sadly I've never checked them out, and I dunno why either. But, I'm going to now. Thanks Matt for this video, ya got my interest up now.
The memories of me and my dad racing around Dijon in the Capri RS3100 seeing who can get the fastest time same as in Grand Prix Legends and silverstone in the eagle westlake
Man I played the crap out of that game !
At the time I was something like 15 years old and I felt a little bit weird because while most of my schoolmates were into tuning cars, modern supercars and stuff, I was the one playing Rally Trophy (a quite nice 1960s rally game that allowed extensive modding), GT Legends and loving vintage sixties stuff. I guess I was a hipster before it was "in", haha !
Regarding my experience on GT Legends, I was not that much into the GTC-TC 76 cars, I prefered driving the small TC65 cars, especially the Cortina, the Falcon or the Jaguar MkII. The "drift kings" server online at the time was quite fun, it was Cortinas vs Alfas (and sometimes plus Falcons, Alpines and Mustangs).
When I drove GTC-TC 76 races, the Ford Capri was funny to drive, as well as the BMW CSL that had a nice sound !
HistoriX on Rfactor is quite the successor of GT Legends, as it uses a lot of the GT Legends content (and needs the DVD...), while adding A LOT of new cars I could only dream of in the game 10 years ago...

I use to love this game back in the day, I played the hell out of it well this and Live For Speed lol. My 2 cars was the mustang and the escort. Those was the funnest cars to me for the way I drove.
after 10 seconds i did put like to the video! :D - i have the game right from the first one week from its release - still have the very same box and dvd - just in case i bought a secondary copy (in case first disc were not to work anymore) - FUCKING LOVE THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!
Fabulous game, my second favourite racing game of all time (after Grand Prix Legends). I still play it quite a bit -- the Elan is probably my favourite car, though the Alfa comes close. As for tracks, Donington from the official ones, I think. Ironic that after years being unable to play it because of the disgustingly awful Starforce DRM, it was Steam of all platforms that made it available DRM-free!

GPL, Sports car GT and GTL was os far ahead and IMO the bedst racing games of all time.
Dksdevil (Danish ?) some games has raised the bar alot the past 2years but you´re right ...it kinda looks like iracing and thats sad cuz iracing are Top Dog but sdtill running on dx9...

The first one I played with a steering wheel. And I love the soundtrack.
I have alot of good memories from GT Legends, yeah I cheated to get the cars unlocked too, had friends to race online! I tried installing it a couple of years ago and top-end pc was having issues installing or running, can't remember lol, probably due to starforce. Saw it on steam may have to pick it up on a sale, that Porsche 911 and CSL were a hoot too (and Pantera which was fun). I remember if you picked the Pantera you would spank so many, but it was hard to get a clean race in, was very twitchy at the limit. Good times.

For those who might hesitate on trying this out because of it's age - don't. It's still awesome today, and a copy grants you access to the Historix mod for rFactor.
my fav career mode was in old Gran Turismo where you needed to pass license to even start racing

First go around I had everything modded to work out well, was all set to go. Tons of test races, everything worked as best as could be hoped. Go to record and suddenly as soon as some rain comes down the AI goes nutzo fast like it doesn't even matter one bit (they actually got faster...) and then the crew doesn't add fuel for no freakin' reason at all. Ragequit.
Come back to it tonight because I want to do it - 3/4ths through the race my brake pedal kicks the can and gets stuck, I get run over by about 4 different AI. Ragequit.
One day I will save those goats.

Warning for PC owners. If you find a CD copy lying around do NOT install it. It contains SecuROM and can leave your system unbootable. Get it from Steam.
No love in the comments for GT Legends ? that's weird, I loved that sim back in the day...I actually got to 'drive' versions of cars I actually owned myself...
This is one of the greatest sims of all time, logged way too many laps in it, but StarForce... not worth it.

great video, whats your opinion on the force feedback/physics and how they compare to modern sims?
Was one of the best for physics in it's day, and I would still give it a 9/10 on physics, it's just that the game is older now so it won't have some of the eye candy we come to expect 8 years later. The menu's etc are a bit dated now, but physics wise the game is worth it. $7 on Steam.
And speaking of HistorX, while it is a good mod, I rather play GT Legends in some aspects, mostly because...RFactor most of the time makes me feel like wandering in the void, as there is very few track animation, no career mode (and no "unifing concept" like the FIA Historic Championship acted for GT Legends), sometimes poor graphic/behaviour/sound/scenario cohesion of the mods (because of tracks and cars designed by different people), mighty bad AI,...GT Legend felt (a little) more like there's life in it, less like you're wandering into races with no connexion.
I also loved the fact that as there was few mods on GT Legends, you just could hop on any online server without wondering about compatibility issues and stuff, and have fun in short races that were much move "lively" !
But on the other hand, HistorX on rFactor has far more cars, a big variety of tracks, more setups options, more realistic tire model and driving,...

GTL and GTR2 can both be activated on steam by going to the activate a product on steam menu and inputting the online key from the games.

Mondello! Wonderful - wish someone would spruce it up for rFactor2. Might have to reinstall this in the meantime though.
This game was converted to rFactor perfectly. If modders bring it to rF2 I will fail in my study and have no social life for a year or 5.

I used to love this on my old xp pc. Is there any way to play this without my buying an old pc running xp? I'm sorry if its a dumb question. I'm not techy at all but would really love to play this game again!
AFAIK the only way to play it anymore is by buying it on steam as the copy protection isn't compatible with new OSes, but the steam version has a different system it uses.
Word of warning for anyone who finds an old copy of GT Legends lying around. Be careful....it has Starforce root/security included with it. It has hosed many people's Windows 10 machines.

why oh why isn't there career modes and the feeling of progression like in this awesome game in modern games? If a formula works, why change it? Is it that they think we as gamers only want instant gratification? (I'm not looking at you though Dirt Rally, you are our lone hope)
Why is arm animation so hard for racing game devs anyway? there was a game from the era of GT ledends called Project Torque which had arm animation and a full 900 degree wheel rotation shown in the animation, the arms animation even did hand over hand and that was a FREE to play game...
If youre good with animations the hands arent really a problem. The difficulties come from the compatibility with the hardware in front of the screen. If there was a standard format for the communication between wheel and game it could be easier..

Why would you want arms in-game anyway? You already see your own arms and your own steering wheel. Isn't it a bit immersive-breaking to see a total of 4 arms and 2 steering wheels?
+Peps “Raggar'n” Persson Because not everyone has that ideal simracing setup. For example, to this day I mount my DFGT on a plain office desk which is fairly tall and sit in a normal wheel office chair, and when I race I don't really see my own hands and the wheel.
