Did Mossberg Make A Great Shotgun Affordable? - Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical Review

- Mossberg sent me the 940 Pro Tactical a while ago. Honestly, I wasn’t in a rush to review it. A sub-$1000 semi-auto shotgun didn’t seem like it would stand out. But the moment I held it, something changed.
The first thing that struck me was the design: a classic feel with modern elements. But it wasn’t just the looks. Shooting it was a revelation.
It was smooth, fast, and balanced. It felt lightweight and was effortless to handle. The oversized controls and innovative optics mounting made a huge difference, too.
Loading it was almost comically easy, and the tang-mounted safety was intuitive. It left me wondering how Mossberg achieved this blend of performance and affordability?
Could it be that Mossberg has made a high-quality shotgun at an unbeatable price? Dive into my full experience and find out what makes the Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical so intriguing.

**stares at Maverick 88** you're alright in my book, baby
Fantastic gun. Cheap and reliable as hell.
Seriously the most underrated shotgun out there. Seems like it's just been in the last few years it's starting to get the love it deserves
The best beater shotgun on the market. I’ve ran everything from slugs to firework loads through mine and it still does great
500 combo kit with me. Hunting or home defense Over 27 years of flawless action.
It'll do the job!
Mossberg sure knows how to make good looking shotguns
Mossberg ha been making high quality shotguns for decades.
I agree with one exception, that new over and under turkey gun with the vintage paint job looks like it was done at home lol
@@missourimongoose8858 I haven’t seen that one lol
@@The_Enclave8 it's a cool concept but man it's a ugly duckling lol
I'm glad you've embraced the other half of us. These "budget" reviews are every bit as entertaining and informative as the higher end reviews. It adds to the value of your brand. Have a great day, dude.
I agree 100% about the placement of the safety. This is the main reason I have been a Mossberg fan my entire life. My first shotgun was a Mosberg 500 20ga and now I want all my guns to have a top tang safety.
Being left handed, I agree.
I hate the cross safety it's stupid. Top tang is king
My wife's shottie. She loves this weapon. So soft shooting and easily manipulated!
Mossberg always makes a good shotgun that’s affordable. There are at least 9 Mossberg shotguns in my family for 3 actual shooters. Dating back to the 60’s to the late 90’s productions. One bolt action and the rest pumps. All hunting guns. Never let any of us down.
I am not a bird or rabbit hunter, so the only shotgun I own is the one that belonged to my late grandfather, but if I were to buy another shotgun it would be a Mossberg because I know about their reputation as a reliable cost effective weapon.
@@harpintn my brother and I each use to deer hunt with Mossberg 500s. 1 12 gauge and 1 20 gauge. I use to have 2” groups at 85 years with a smooth bore bead sight with that 20 gauge. Then I started duck hunting. Steel shot expanded the barrel. Went from a tack driver to a completely dangerous weapon to run slugs through. Still kills birds, though.
@@stevemartin8326 love your movies. DA BUHGA
@@NoNo_IStay*sigh* lol. Ha ha. Never hear that ever.
@@stevemartin8326 people in my area sometimes use a 12 gauge with slugs as well. I know at one time the 30-30 was the most popular in my area, but now more and more are using .300 BLK or 5.56 simply because that has become something that most people have now.
He's there talking about the Ram and here I am looking at the sweet truck 23 secs in. I just love old beat up trucks.
The one I noticed looked like a surplus military 3/4 ton. They were so tuff Vietnam mud and DA Artillerymen couldn't stop it.
Brother, I own several Mossbergs, several for many years. they have never failed me!
I bought this gun two years ago. After less than 20 shots the magazine tube had a defect. Took Mossberg months to fix it inder warranty. That inconvenience aside, I love this shotgun.
I've seen other ytubers talking about warranty service troubles with M'berg. Now it's hard to not notice when the topic appears.
So far, I think that's what's keeping me off the brand.
Same with Smith and Wesson they csn be bitches about warranty@@OneWildTurkey
I have a Mossberg. A 20 ga. bolt action made before 1956 (No serial #). With a polychoke. I have other shotguns. But when I head out to hunt birds or small game 99 % of the time, I take that old Mossberg. Eat your hearts out, folks.
Thanks, imma bit jealous right now.
Took my 930 to the 940 level with OR3Gun parts. 1000 rounds + , no failures. My 2 500's have more rounds than I can recall, and they just work.
Anybody else here took a glance at the title's headline, tapped it and thought Colion was going to talk about the Mossberg Maverick 88? I sure did. 😅
If TFBTV would discuss it by means of testing it through a mechanical torture test to determine reliability & durability, I don't see any issue with it being on this channel.
Now, I have a Benelli M4, 1301 Tactical, an Ultima Patrol, and several other shotguns in that realm. But I don't have one of these. Between your review and TFBtv, I feel like I need to add this to the list.
Mossberg has always made excellent shotguns! Even there bargain basement 500A combo was a good deal, but when you added a rifle slug barrel for an additional 50 bucks, it was an outstanding deal. Numerous forms of the Mossberg shotguns have been used by law-enforcement around the world and the military under different brand names. Maybe you should learn to ghost load that!!!! go on dude look it up you know you want to
My wife bought me one last year and I have to say, it is as fun as it gets. HB industries makes an amazing m-lok light mount with a qd sling mount built in as well as an insert that replaces the length of pull inserts that also has a qd sling mount. It makes it super slick and comfy. Mossberg added a shim kit that goes between the stock and receiver that changes the cant that makes it shoulder so much easier to the red dot. Definitely worth every penny spent.
I have one and it’s absolutely awesome. No complaints.
I’m must be broke. Because I can’t afford the TRX or the 940 Tactical.
Most of us are brother. Bidenomics....
I have a Saiga but I’m going to purchase a Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical with the light and optics. I thank you so much for your content. Your videos have taught me so much.
This is the first and probably only time this guy is gonna make a review on a gun I already own
I needed a shotgun for 3 gun, I picked up a Mossberg 940 tactical, it was reasonable, brought it to the club and tried it out, it wouldn’t cycle, I tried 3 different brands of ammo, I tried 4 shot, 6 and 7-1/2, would not cycle, brought it back to the gun shop and got a Remington 1100 tactical, couple bucks more, hasn’t failed me yet.
Mossberg has definitely raised the bar for affordable semi-auto shotguns!
Have a 930. Love it. It didnt like some low brass loads, so I took a 1/4" drill bit and drilled some holes in the spacer tube similar to the Or3gun upgrade. Eats everything I throw in it now. Walmart birdshot to Brenneke slugs. I plan to get her milled for a dot soon
I had a 940 and it was epic. Put 500 rds through it. 1 failure, and it was just me shooting too fast. All i had to do was rack it again. I ran high powered slugs and light birdshot. Incredible gun. Easy cleaning and you can put 1200 rds in between cleaning.
Excited for this!
Thank you for all your content I learn alot from it and look forward to the next one
Not a fan of shotguns myself. But I did finally get the money up to buy my first AR.
Congrats. Welcome to the club!
Fan or not you should add it to your collection. Shotguns are top of the food chain when it comes to home defense.
Can't put dragons breath in an AR. J/S.
I'd still pick the Beretta A300 Ultima Patrol over the Mossberg 940 Pro
Why is that? I don’t own either of them but would like to. Curious what you think..
Yes darth, please elaborate.
@Spidey_Ethan I was very undecided myself on whether to get the 9:40 or the patrol Le. The Beretta tends to run 100 or so more than a comparable 940. I know this isn't very helpful but I think they are very similar in their operation. Both are reliable and have a similar feel. It's similar, but not the same. Although it might be a product of my abusive circumstance but it seems like the Berettas finish seems to be a little tougher. Admittedly the offset anodized finished on the 940 looks cooler. The only difference I might notice is the 9:40 doesn't seem to cycle as effortlessly with really light loads where the Beretta seems to do just fine. For me that's not an issue because I don't buy any light load birdshot shells anyway.
@@Spidey_EthanBeretta A300 Patrol and Beretta 1301 include front and rear ghost ring sights plus a picatinny rail if you want an optic to co-witness. The Beretta semi-auto shotguns are known to be very reliable.
@@jacobdelgado7343 Preferred by many in Shotguns subreddit. Many had 930s that had issues. The 940 is better than the 930. Many consider the A300 the best budget alternative to the one of the best, the Beretta 1301. There are few reports of issues with the A300 family. A300 Patrol also is more popular on Gundeals subreddit.
I’ve been looking at getting a shotgun lately and this honestly just sold me
It is not a bad choice for many would recommend the Beretta A300 Patrol for close to the same price. See postings on Gundeals subreddit for pricing and feedback. It is also recommend on Shotguns subreddit.
Check out the berreta 1301. Or the patrol is more in this price range.
@@matthewbeaver5026 will do, definitely open to more suggestions
Just bought the Mossberg 940 jm pro couple weeks ago. Love it!
Had mine for about a year... LOVE LOVE LOVE it... Getting the 940 Pro Field for pheasant hunting this fall...
I have both and you will love the field gun too! I have both 930 and 940 in tactical and field set ups. the 940 tac is my fun gun, it eats everything but doesn,t like cheap ammo, no low brass.
@@frankmccanna2628 I tried low brass when I first got it... DEF not a good thing!! LOL
Thank you for validating my purchase of the Red Dot version of the 940 Tactical I picked up two weeks ago. I haven’t had a chance to take it out and shoot it but it feels so good just handling it. Most of my shotgun shooting over the last 40 years has been done with my old Remington 870 Wingmaster. When it came time for a more tactical semi auto I came back to Mossberg since I learned to shoot on my Mossberg 183T bolt action full choke 410 45 years ago and always had a soft spot for the brand. I don’t know if it will matter or not on an 18 1/2 inch barrel but I like the ability to change the choke also.
Love my Mossy! 12g pump.. 7+1 also!
Pumps FTW
This is a nice tool to have, thanks Colion for this review 💪🏾💪🏾
I just realized Colion is the marques brownlee of guns
I’m interested in one but it’s gonna be hard to replace my a300
Many prefer the A300 Patrol over the 940 Tactical for a 18.5" home defense shotgun.
JM pro is my favorite, glad you made this video to share a great shotgun!
thanks for the video! great review!
Got mine about a year ago and still love it.
Love the video. Also hats off to your videographer. He uses several techniques that the average viewer will not pick up on.
I had a dealer search for this shotgun back when it was first released a couple years ago. After about three months I was a a local gun store and came across a Benelli M4 in the titanium cerakote. I bought it without hesitation. Two days later I got a call from the other gun store that they located the 940. Unfortunately I had to decline it, but it has been on my list of arms to buy next. Only bad part is that the list keeps growing
I have one and it runs great, I'm happy with it. 👍👍
I have a 940 and I love it! I agree with all of your points, especially loading it. I also have a Mossberg 590A1 and initially it was a bear to load.
Thanks for making this video colion noir I’ve looking to add another shotgun to my collection. I’m gonna give this one a look
Thanks a lot now I have to convince my wife we need one of these...lol. As usual, it's a great video.
Great review! Love Mossberg shotguns.
Mossberg has been making excellent budget shotguns for a long time. The first firearm i owned was a Maverick 88. I put a ton of shells though that thing, and the only malfunction i had that i didnt cause, was the action got stuck closed once after i fired it. I spent a few mins smacking the buttstock on the ground and it came loose. Don't know why it happened and it never happened again. Only got rid of that gun because i wanted a proper 500, which itself isn't an expensive gun. Also runs like a top. Im not usually a brand loyal person, but idk man, mossberg makes shit that works, even the cheap stuff. Might be time to add a semi auto to the cabinet.
Great video and very informative.
Have a Mossberg 930 Blackwater edition and am very pleased with it.
Mossberg makes great guns. Great value, reliable and you can pass them on to the next generation.
My first shotgun was/is a 185ka. 20 ga/bolt action/ 2 round detachable box mag/ adjustable choke made sometime in the late ‘40’s. Whew, that’s a lot. Anyway, It still resides in my safe and is still a viable shooter, my wife actually loves it. Dad gave it to me for my 12 th birthday in 1960. It still has all of its original blueing. I also have a 930 Blackwater edition in 12ga 3”.
Very good video review!!!
Great review!!
Love my 930 spx with a pistol grip but definitely digging this one.
Thank you for the review. I may be in the market for a new shotgun!!!!
I'm pretty happy with the used 930 JM Pro I picked up. Holds 9+1 2 3/4 shells. Added a streamlight mount to the magazine tube. Runs like a champ.
can't believe I haven't seen much on the thunder ranch version
Only those associated with Thunder Ranch are likely to promote it as Thunder Ranch likely gets a cut rather than Guntubers getting paid directly or indirectly by Mosberg to promote the the 940 Tactical.
I love my 500, & I'll straight Gonzales you over it, but that 940 tac has had my eye for a minute.
Beretta 1301!!! BOOM. THAT MOSSBERG LOOKS LIKE A 2x4
Or the A300 patrol, for the same price of the 940, I bought the patrol
@@Timcanniff311 Me too.
I recently grabbed a 1301 just because I got it for a good price. I can’t consider Mossberg anymore. The first and only one I bought(590A1) wouldn’t even cycle out of the box and immediately had to be sent in.
Just bought an A300 Ultima Patrol. Same price as the Mossberg and SO much better!!!!
@@Timcanniff311 same here
Just shot mine yesterday…I love the 940 Tactical. Also have the Maverick 88 pump, love that too! Every time I shoot the 940 I say Damm!… in good way lol.
Thanks for the great videos.
Had a 930 I want this one too
Mossberg has always made great shotguns. I have been using my Model 500A slug gun for over 25 years.
I'm sold! LOL I have always wanted that shot gun.
Picked one up a few months ago. Great home defense shotie!
Good information 👍
I have my uncles older 590 with barrel shroud. It’s a great looking shotgun.
They have one of these at my Walmart for 928. May have to go get it now.
I have a JM Pro...its sublime..
I have a ltt 1301, pistol grip 1301, a300 ultima patrol, mossberg 590 retrograde and my 940 pro w red dot is my favorite one of em all. It's weight and length of pull feels so gooood. The 1301s especially the pistol grip just feel too short. I was even thinking of buying the 930 tactical. Mossberg for the money makes some badass guns 💯
Love your channel. Been following since the beginning. Salute 🫡 to you for all you do for the gun community. 💪🏽 also can you do a video on the canik tti combat please 🙏🏽 ?
I got the 930 SPX love that damn thing
From my double barrel 10 gauge Churchill to my Mossburg 410 bolt. My Mossburg 500 is hands down my favorite shotgun. I favor pump shotguns, that's just who I am. I am so used to that pump that I've missed Grouse with my follow up shot because I couldn't get the forend of my Browning Auto 5 to move. It's that engrained into me!
Maybe now's the time to look at another auto loader, a Mossberg 940 Tactical...
The 930 SPX is nice as well!
Love this shotgun.
This shotgun is amazing. My girlfriend has adopted my 940 pro tactical as her own. She loves it and tells me how fun it is to shoot. Now she keeps it by her bed for self defense when we’re not at the range.
Absolutely love it. Just wish I could find a pistol grip stock for it.
I love that shotguns are getting more appreciation these days.
Hey Colion , I loved this video, since I just purchased a 940 Pro Tactical 12 ga. I don’t think you could of said it any better 💥🔫 thanks from Commy Ct 🇺🇸
Very reliable gun. I'm waiting for more heat shield options for mine.
Love this video
I purchased a JM 940 Pro to shoot dove and clay with last year. This shot gun is a freaking hotrod. It's easy to use and very accurate. I don't need the tactical version, but I really kind of just want it.
Loved my 590A1 but you've sold me on this
Mossberg Mack’s a hell of a shot gun
I have the 940 pro Turkey and love it
Mossberg makes a quality shotgun. I've liked Mossberg shotguns for years now. When I first started deer hunting at 16 I used a Mossberg 500 12ga. I don't currently have a Mossberg 500 in my collection but intend to add one someday.
When you talk Mossberg your talking to me. I have a Mossberg 500, 590pro, 930SPX and the 940pro. I just got my 940pro about 2 months ago and love it.
Was just in the market for something like this
Lil bit of work it becomes 8+1+1(ghost loaded) with just a little bit of removal of excess plastic inside the magazine tube
IWI Tavor TS12 comes 15+1, 16+1 with a ghost load 💥
I’ve watched what seems like 1000 videos on this gun, and all except 2 are positive . Thanks for cementing my decision to get one. Almost got an M4 but I think I’ll save $1,000
I love the top mounted safety! I'm right handed but shoot left handed (I know, I'm weird). That's why my Browning BPS is the ultimate bird gun. Top mounted safety, bottom load and eject, life is good!
Don't forget about ghost loading also. I bought my 9400 jungle gun in the early 90s for that reason. The 940 waits in the safe for its turn.
SPX 930 my fav
A beauty!!
I pick up my 940 pro tactical on Friday.
@Colion - You forgot about the quick unload feature.
Ahh geez i wasn't in the market but now i know i want one them bad boiz
Looking up where to order one right now.
I never got the urge to look at something other than the shottie that I have, until now.
Looks like fun.
When I qualified on the combat shotgun course in the Marine Corps, a long time ago, if you weren’t loading you were shooting.
When you can double-tap with a 12 gauge, you know you've got a serious tool in your hands ! Love my 930 HS, but want a 940 Pro... 👍🏻👍🏻
Still love my 930 JM pro and I got a 11rd tube
